Safety Precautions
ATTENTION: Do not disconnect the equipment while power is on or the area is known to be non-hazardous.
IMPORTANT:
- Use a correctly rated and listed power source (limited power source or LPS). Follow all applicable wiring codes and standards.
- Peripheral equipment must be suitable for the location in which it is used.
- There are no non-incendive circuits or non-incendive field wiring within or associated with the equipment.
- Only qualified personnel are authorized to install or service the equipment.
- Do not disassemble the system - no user-serviceable parts inside.
- Do not use the equipment if it has been damaged.
Enclosure Requirements and Mounting Locations
1. Provide an Adequate Enclosure
To protect its electronic components, the TOUCH 1500-EX must be mounted in a non-hazardous area with a minimum IP32 enclosure (Type 1). An IP52 (Type 12) or higher enclosure is recommended. An IP54 (Type 4) or better enclosure is required for hazardous locations. The TOUCH 1500-EX assembly comes with a gasket and enclosure mounting hardware. The TOUCH 1500-EX is designed to operate in an ambient temperature between -40°C to 60°C (-40°F to 60°F). If the ambient temperature is outside this range, a radiator with a window kit and/or a cooling fan may be necessary at the panel level.
2. Determine Mounting Locations on the Electrical Panel
The TOUCH 1500-EX should be placed on the front of the panel at eye level for easy viewing. The TOUCH 1500-EX assembly is an electronic unit and should not be placed near strong magnetic fields or excessive vibrations.
Safe Use Conditions in Hazardous (Explosive) Atmospheres
This equipment must be installed in an environment with a low risk of mechanical damage. The equipment must be used only in an area with a pollution degree of at least 2, as defined by IEC/EN 60664-1. The equipment must be installed in a rear panel with a door or removable cover that provides a degree of protection of at least IP54, in accordance with IEC/EN 60079-0, and that is designed for:
- Internal and external ambient conditions: -40°C to +60°C
- Minimum protection rating IP54
- ATEX / UKEX / IECEx: Zone 2 or higher
- US / CAN: Class I Div 2 or higher
- Can only be opened using a tool
Provisions must be made external to the equipment to ensure surge protection at a level not exceeding 140% at the power supply terminals.
Cutout Dimensions for Mounting the TOUCH 1500-EX on the Front Panel
1. Locate the TOUCH 1500-EX on the Front Panel
Place the Touch 1500-EX assembly on the front of the panel, at a level that allows it to be viewed. Ensure that the cover on the rear of the assembly does not interfere with existing panel hardware.
Note: Cutting the opening for the screen is a delicate manual operation; if not done correctly, the panel door may be damaged. The procedure for tracing and cutting the opening for the screen must be performed with care by qualified personnel experienced in panel construction.
2. Prepare and Mark the Opening Position and Mounting Holes
Use the cutout indications to prepare the opening for the Touch 1500-EX screen. Apply two layers of adhesive tape around the perimeter of the intended opening to prevent scratching the panel surface with the jigsaw.
3. Cut the Opening for the Screen
Cut the opening for the TOUCH 1500-EX using a jigsaw with a 24 TPI blade. Be careful not to damage the panel door. Remove all rough edges and burrs with a metal file before proceeding.
4. Drill the Mounting Holes
Drill the 16 holes using a 5 mm (3/16") drill bit to mount the Touch 1500-EX assembly in the panel. Note: The following steps are easier if the panel door is placed on a horizontal surface.
5. Mount the User Interface onto the Panel Door
Position the Touch 1500-EX assembly; the sixteen studs pass through the sixteen mounting holes of the Touch 1500-EX assembly's mounting plate (see figure below). Place the supplied 6/32 in Kep nuts onto each of the sixteen mounting studs. Hand-tighten only. Look at the front of the panel and align the TOUCH 1500-EX assembly to be level (if necessary, loosen the clips to adjust the assembly's position). Once the screen is correctly positioned, tighten the nuts to a torque of 0.62 Nm (5.5 in/lb) using an 8 mm (5/16 in) in-line torque wrench. Do not overtighten to avoid damaging the hardware. Tighten the Kep nuts in the indicated order to ensure a proper seal.
Power Connection
Connect 24 Vdc to the male power connection located on the left side of the Touch 1500-EX. Ensure the ground connection is made. Route cables through the cable gland as shown.
Note: The Touch 1500-EX is designed for a voltage of 12 to 27 Vdc. As the NGC-40 modules are designed for 24 Vdc, this voltage has been used to power the Touch 1500-EX as well. Therefore, the recommended alarm relays and lamps in the "Additional Material" are designed for 24 Vdc.
Provisions must be made external to the equipment to ensure surge protection at a level not exceeding 140% at the power supply terminals.
Install an Alarm Indicator and Alarm Relays
Mount the alarm relay on a DIN rail in the panel enclosure. Mount the alarm indicator on the panel door below the touchscreen. Following the diagram below, connect 24 Vdc to the relay driver output at the bottom of the touchscreen, to the alarm relay, and to the alarm indicator. Following the diagram below, wire between the relay driver output, the alarm relay, and the alarm indicator.
Communication
The TOUCH 1500-EX has two isolated RS-485 ports located at the bottom.
Port External (DATA 1 +/-)
The RS-485 port labeled "RS-485-1" is the external port used to communicate with Modbus devices (i.e., NGC-40-BRIDGE Module, Elexant 4010i, Elexant 4020i, and RMM2).
Remote Port (DATA 2 +/-) – Option
The RS-485 port labeled "RS-485-2" is the remote port used to communicate with a host computer or DCS.
Host Port (RS-232) – Option
The RS-232 port labeled "RS-232-1" is the RS-232 port that can be used as a local host port to communicate with a host computer. If the RS-232 port is used, a 9-pin female-to-female null modem adapter must be used.
RS-485 CONFIGURATION SWITCHES
The configuration switches are located on the underside of the Touch 1500-EX. Refer to the table below for configurations.
Switch | Position | Notes | |
---|---|---|---|
Pull-down (PD) | On (default upon delivery) The "-" signal of the RS-485 network is forced to a determined state when inactive. | Off The "-" signal of the RS-485 network is not forced to a determined state when inactive. | A device (typically this Touch 1500-EX) on the RS-485 network must force the "-" signal of the network to a determined state. |
Pull-up (PU) | On (default upon delivery) The "+" signal of the RS-485 network is forced to a determined state when inactive. | Off The "+" signal of the RS-485 network is not forced to a determined state when inactive. | A device (typically this Touch 1500-EX) on the RS-485 network must force the "+" signal of the network to a determined state. |
Termination (TERM) | On (default upon delivery) The RS-485 network is terminated by a 120 ohm resistor. | Off The RS-485 network is not terminated. | Terminate the device (Touch 1500-EX or other) at each end of the RS-485 network, for a total of two terminated devices. No other device on the network should be terminated. |
RESET SWITCH
The reset switch is located on the bottom of the TOUCH 1500-EX. A pointed object is required to press the reset switch and restart the Touch 1500-EX software.
