Introduction to Thermostat and Communicating System

This thermostat offers flexible programming for residential applications, controlling components of a 24 VAC residential ClimateTalk™ communicating system (gas/electric heat, heat pump, central air conditioning). It features a high-resolution color display, intuitive programming with touch buttons, on-screen prompting, pop-up message alerts (e.g., change filter, service check-ups), and an exchangeable faceplate. A USB port is available for contractor setup.

Key features include a 40°F to 99°F setpoint range, 1°F resolution, 3.5-inch diagonal 1/4 VGA LCD, auto configure, autochangeover, selectable continuous fan speeds, humidity/dehumidification control, dual fuel control, advanced diagnostics, fault code display, and an advanced installer menu. It also supports simultaneous heat and cool program storage, a four-step daily schedule sequence, energy management recovery, and indicators for filter/UV lamp/humidifier pad changes.

Note: If system power is lost for more than eight hours, the clock must be reset. Programming and configuration settings will be saved.

WARNING: Thermostat installation and all control system components must conform to Class II circuits per the NEC code.

WARNING: To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage, disconnect electric power to the system at the main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation is complete.

1. Thermostat Overview

1.1 Display and Controls

The thermostat features a color display and various control buttons. The display shows: 1. Indoor temperature, 2. Relative indoor humidity, 3. Day of the week and time, 4. Outside temperature (if outdoor sensor connected), 5. Desired temperature or setpoint. Control buttons include: 6. System setting indicator (e.g., Cool, Heat, EM, Auto, Off), 7. System setting selector (also displays Home screen in menus), 8. Up ▲ and Down ▼ arrows for temperature adjustment and menu navigation, 9. Menu button (M) to enter menu functions, 10. Left ◀ and Right ▶ arrows for menu settings navigation (Left ◀ also exits temperature hold), 11. Fan operation selector (On or AUTO, also Enter button to save entries and display previous menu), 12. Fan mode indicator.

1.2 Navigating through the menus

The thermostat has a simplified menu structure. Press the Menu button (M) to enter the Main Menu, which lists options for thermostat operation and programming (e.g., Clock and Display Settings, Heating Program, Cooling Program, Fan Settings, Thermostat Settings). Use the Up ▲ or Down ▼ arrows to highlight a menu item, then press the Menu button (M) to enter. Use the Left ◀ or Right ▶ arrows and Up ▲ or Down ▼ arrows to change settings. Press the Home button to return to the Home Screen. Press the Enter button to save changes and return to the previous menu. If no button is pressed for two minutes, the thermostat will return to the home screen without saving changes.

2. Installation

This booklet provides installation instructions and information for the thermostat only. Separate instructions are provided for the furnace, air handler, AC condensing unit, or heat pump. This thermostat is designed exclusively for the ClimateTalk™ communicating system.

2.1 Wiring Requirements

Each communicating device uses a four-wire connection (R, C, 1, 2). These terminals must be wired consistently. The maximum length from the thermostat to the indoor unit is 100 feet. The wiring diagram shows connections between the Thermostat (R, C, Data 1, Data 2) and the Furnace/Fournaise (R, C, Data 1, Data 2), with R being 24VAC (Hot) and C being 24VAC (Common).

2.2 Quick Installation Steps

  1. Determine thermostat installation location.
  2. Mount thermostat base to wall.
  3. Connect wires to thermostat base.
  4. Attach thermostat to base.
  5. Turn on power to system (allow ~2 minutes for configuration).
  6. Set the time.
  7. Select advanced installer menu settings or use USB upload for configuration.
  8. Perform thermostat/system operation checkout.
  9. Program thermostat or accept factory programming.
  10. Touch the Right ▶ arrow to run the schedule.

2.3 Installing Thermostat

  • Separate the thermostat body from the base.
  • Place the base at the desired location and mark mounting holes.
  • Drill mounting holes.
  • Attach the base snugly to the wall with two screws (leveling is for appearance only).
  • Connect wires to the terminal block on the base.
  • Push excess wire into the wall and plug the hole with fire-resistant material (e.g., fiberglass insulation) to prevent drafts.
  • Line up the thermostat with the base and snap into place.
Removable Faceplate

The silver or white faceplate can be removed. To remove: gently pull on the tabs behind the lower edge, then lift off. To re-position: place on the top edge, then press on the bottom to snap into place.

2.4 Initial Power Up

Turn on AC power. The thermostat will automatically identify and configure for the communicating equipment installed.

Messages at Thermostat

As equipment is found on the network, the display will show "device Found" and a "Searching" icon until all equipment is found and configured. If no equipment is found after approximately five minutes, the home screen will appear, indicating a "Fault". If the indoor unit is not detected, "Check System Fault" will be displayed, prompting a check of system wiring.

The display will change to a Start-up/Hold screen showing actual temperature, SYSTEM position (HEAT), FAN setting (AUTO), HOLD AT with the setpoint temperature (62°F for heat or 85°F for cool), and real-time clock.

Communications Systems

The ClimateTalk™ protocol identifies individual nodes connected to the thermostat. The Network Device display appears during initial power-up and when a new device is found.

2.5 Check Système Operation

Heating System (Heat pump only/Furnace only/Dual fuel)
  1. Press the SYSTEM button until "Heat" is displayed.
  2. Press Up ▲ to adjust the thermostat setting 1°F above room temperature. The heating system should operate, and the display will show "Heat On".
  3. If additional stages exist, adjust the setting to 3°F (2°C) or more above actual temperature; the next heat stage will energize. Note: For heat pump systems, set Aux Lockout Temperature (section 6) to avoid disabling indoor heat.
  4. Press Down ▼ to adjust the setting below room temperature. The heating system should stop operating.
Cooling System
  1. Press the SYSTEM button until "Cool" is displayed.
  2. Press Down ▼ to adjust the thermostat setting 1°F below room temperature. The cooling system should operate, and the display will show "Cool On".
  3. Press Up ▲ to adjust the setting above room temperature. The cooling system should stop operating.
Fan Operation
  1. Press the FAN button until "Fan On" is displayed. The fan should operate.
  2. Press the FAN button to change the display to "Fan Auto". The fan should stop operating unless there is a call for heat or cool.

3. Thermostat Setup and Usage

3.1 Set Time and Date

To set the time and date: Press Menu button (M) to enter Main Menu. Highlight and enter "Clock and Display Settings". Highlight and enter "Time & Date". Use Up ▲ or Down ▼ arrows to set time and date. Press Right ▶ arrow to highlight Minute, AM/PM, Month, Day, or Year. The thermostat automatically assigns the correct day of the week after the date is set. Press Enter when finished.

Note: If system power is lost for more than eight hours, the clock will need to be reset. Programming and configuration settings will be saved.

3.2 System Setting

From the Home screen, press the system button to choose the system setting:

  • Cool: Thermostat controls only the cooling system.
  • Heat: Thermostat controls only the heating system.
  • Off: Heating and Cooling systems are off.
  • Em (Emergency): Available only when a heat pump is detected. Uses only backup heat.
  • Auto Changeover: Used when both heating and cooling may be required on the same day. The thermostat automatically selects heating or cooling based on indoor temperature and selected setpoints. It prevents programming conflicts between heating and cooling setpoints. For example, it can switch from heating in the morning to cooling during the day. The desired temperature can be changed by pressing Up ▲ or Down ▼.

3.3 Auxiliary Heating (Heat pumps only)

If a heat pump is installed, auxiliary heating automatically activates when the outside temperature is too cold for efficient heat pump operation. When active, the display shows "Aux" with the Heat icon (♨).

3.4 Temporary Temperature Hold

To temporarily adjust the temperature while a program is running, press Up ▲ or Down ▼. The thermostat will maintain this desired temperature for four hours by default. The display will show "Hold at" with the desired temperature and "Hold Until" with the temporary hold end time. Briefly, "Press ◀ or ▶ to set the Hold Time" will appear, allowing adjustment of the hold duration. Press the Left ◀ arrow to cancel a temporary hold, and the display will revert to the current program setting.

3.5 Permanent Temperature Hold

This feature allows setting a constant temperature, bypassing any programmed schedules. This mode is recommended at all times. To use: change the temperature with Up ▲ or Down ▼ and press the Hold button. When active, "Hold at" will be displayed. Press the Left ◀ button to exit permanent hold and display the current program setting.

3.6 Choosing the Fan Setting (On or Auto)

  • Fan Auto: The most commonly used setting. The fan turns on only when the heating or cooling system is running.
  • Fan On: The fan runs continuously at the speed (High, Medium, or Low) selected in the Fan Settings menu (section 3.10).

3.7 Maintenance Reminders

The thermostat provides automatic reminders for air filter, humidifier pad, or UV lamp replacement. These reminders can be turned on/off and their time period set (1 to 12 months) in the Thermostat Settings Menu (section 3.11). Examples of reminders include "Change Filter", "Change UV Lamp", and "Change Humid. Pad". To clear a reminder, enter the Alert Information Detail menu from the Main Menu and select "Yes" to "Clear Alert and Reset Timer".

3.8 Display settings

The Display Settings menu allows adjustment of screen brightness, background color, keypad backlight, and auto dimmer. It also controls what is displayed on the Home screen (Time & Day, Outdoor Temp Display, Humidity Display, Alert Message Area). To access: From Main Menu, highlight and enter "Clock and Display Settings", then highlight and enter "Display Settings".

  • Keypad Backlight: "On" keeps the backlight on for better visibility. "Off" turns it on briefly when a button is pressed.
  • Auto Dimmer: "On" changes the display to a darker background from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM when no buttons are pressed. "Off" maintains constant brightness.
  • Brightness Setting: Adjusts screen brightness from Dark to Bright.
  • Theme: Selects background color (e.g., Blue, Blue Rheem, Blue Ruud, Green Rheem, Green Ruud).

3.9 Heating Program/Cooling Program

From the Main Menu, highlight and enter "Heating Program" or "Cooling Program". Refer to section 4 for details.

3.10 Fan Settings Menu

This menu selects the fan speed when "Fan On" is selected. The default is "Medium". Options include "High", "Medium", or "Low".

3.11 Thermostat Settings Menu

Additional operating settings are found here. From the Main Menu, highlight and enter "Thermostat Settings".

  • Air Filter Maintenance/UV Lamp Maintenance/Humidifier Maintenance: Default is "Off". When "On", a reminder appears on the home screen after a set time (1-12 months). Use Up ▲ or Down ▼ to select On/Off, and Left ◀ or Right ▶ to set the maintenance period.
  • °F or °C: Default is °F. Select temperature display in Fahrenheit or Celsius.
  • Beeper: Default is "On". Provides an audible prompt when a button is pressed.
  • Heat Pump Backup: Default is "On". When on Auxiliary heat or Emergency heat, if gas heat loss is detected, enables heat pump heat.
  • Auto Humidity Reduction: Default is "Off". "High" or "Low" minimizes window condensation by reducing the humidity setpoint when outside temperature is cold.
  • Optimum - Comfort or Dehum: Default is "Off". "Comf" alters temperature by humidity for true comfort. "Dehum" maximizes humidity reduction by cooling below the setpoint.
  • Cycle Humidifier: Default is "Off". When "On", cycles humidifier on for 10 minutes and off for 10 minutes to reduce water usage.
  • EMR (Energy Management Recovery): Default is "On". System starts early to reach desired temperature at program start. "Off" means system starts at program start time.
  • Maximum Heat Setpoint Temp: Default 99°F. Highest temperature limit in Heat mode.
  • Minimum Cool Setpoint Temp: Default 45°F. Lowest temperature limit in Cool mode.
  • Temperature Display Adjust: Default 0°. Allows offset adjustment to match other thermostats.
  • Humidity Setpoint: Percent humidity heating system and humidifier attempt to maintain (20% to 50%, default 45%).
  • Dehumidification Setpoint: Percent humidity cooling system tries to reach (40% to 95%, default 60%). Achieved by compressor control and circulator blower speed.

4. Programming the thermostat

Note: It is recommended to disable programming (section 3.5) or program the same temperature for every hour of every day to optimize comfort and efficiency.

4.1 Energy Saving Factory Pre-Program

The thermostat comes pre-programmed with energy-saving settings for every day of the week. If these settings meet user needs, simply select Cool, Heat, or Auto using the System button and press Left ◀ to begin program operation.

4.2 Planning your Program

The thermostat can be programmed with different profiles:

  • Entire Week: Every day has the same program.
  • Monday-Friday: Monday-Friday has the same program.
  • Saturday-Sunday: Saturday-Sunday has the same program.
  • Individual Days: Each day has a separate program.

Each day or group of days has four time periods: Morning, Day, Evening, and Night. Both Heating and Cooling Programs are programmed identically.

Guidelines for planning your program:

  • In Heating, lower temperatures save energy.
  • In Cooling, higher temperatures save energy.
  • If using auto-changeover, do not program heating temperatures higher than cooling temperatures.

4.3 Entering the Heating & Cooling Programs

Entering Heating Program: From Main Menu, highlight and enter "Heating Program". Highlight and enter "Entire Week". Use Up ▲ and Down ▼ to change highlighted Time or Temperature. Use Left ◀ or Right ▶ to highlight the next time or temperature. Set all times and temperatures for all periods. After setting, press Enter to save; a checkmark indicates programmed schedule portions.

Entering Cooling Program: After entering Heating Program, press Right ▶ to highlight "Switch to Cool Program" and press Menu button (M), or enter "Cooling Program" from the Main Menu. Enter Cool program using the same procedure.

For Monday – Friday and Saturday – Sunday programming, follow the same procedure.

Using Individual Days: Allows changing program settings for single or multiple days. Highlight a day and press ☑ to mark it. Mark additional days for the same program. Press Set to begin entering the program for selected days.

5. Diagnostics

5.1 Alert Info Detail

If the thermostat detects a system component issue (heat pump, air handler, furnace, AC) or a maintenance reminder, an alert appears on the Home screen. Details are in the Alert Info Detail menu. Installer contact information may also be displayed.

Two levels of alerts:

  • Maintenance Reminder: Can be cleared and timer reset by selecting "Clear Alert Message and reset timer" and pressing Right ▶.
  • Critical System Warnings: If a Red system alert appears, contact a qualified service technician for service.

5.2 Reset Operation

If a voltage spike or static discharge causes display blanking or erratic operation, the thermostat can be reset. To reset, press Up ▲, Down ▼, and System buttons simultaneously.

Note: Resetting the thermostat reverts Thermostat Settings, time, date, and programming schedule to factory defaults. Refer to the customized settings recorded at the end of this manual to restore desired settings.

5.3 Modulating Chinook System Fault Codes

This section lists various diagnostic fault codes and their descriptions for the Chinook system. Examples include "Long Run Time", "System Pressure Trip", "Short Cycling", "Failed Ignition", "Low pressure switch trip", "Blower fault no run", "No blower communication", and "Memory card invalid". For additional fault information, refer to equipment instructions.

6. Advanced Installer Menu

This menu allows installers to check system information or set advanced settings. It is accessible from the Home screen by pressing Left ◀ and Right ▶ buttons simultaneously for three seconds. Use Up ▲ or Down ▼ arrows to select items, and Menu button (M) to enter. Press Enter to save changes or Home to return to the Home Screen. Changes are not saved if no button is pressed for two minutes.

  • Cool Cycle Rate

*Items marked with * may or may not appear depending on system configuration.

Communicating Devices

Lists connected system equipment. Select an item to view identifying information, operating information, and setup status.

Fault Status

Lists current equipment fault conditions. If no faults, the screen is blank.

Heat Pump Disable

Available for heat pump systems with indoor electric heat. Disables the heat pump and activates electric heat below a selected outdoor temperature (range 5°F to 50°F).

Aux Lockout Temperature

Available for heat pump systems. Disables indoor (electric or gas) heat above a selected outdoor temperature (range from Heat Pump Disable setting to 95°F).

Dual Fuel Setpoint

Similar to Heat Pump Disable, but with gas heat. Compressor operates above this setpoint (range 5°F to 50°F, default 5°F). Below it, gas heat starts, and compressor shuts off. Eliminates need for a fossil fuel kit.

Heat/Cool Cycle Rate

Adjusts anticipation for heat/cool cycles. Default is "Medium". "Slow" for longer cycles, "Fast" for shorter cycles.

Humidity Display Adjust

Default is 0%. Allows adjustment to match other thermostats.

6.1 Equipment User Menu

Equipment operating information and options are found in the Advanced Installer Menu under "Communicating Devices". Fault status is in "Fault Status". In "Communicating Devices", select equipment to view parameters. Each Equipment User Menu has submenus with different parameters based on the equipment type.

Chinook Gas Furnace User Menus

Provides detailed status, fault history, 2-week history, life history, unit info, and setup options for Chinook Gas Furnaces. Parameters include Main Limit status, MRLC Input, IDM Output, pressure switch status, gas valve status, flame sensor status, and blower CFM. Status 2 provides operating mode, blower motor manufacturer, RPM, CFM, temperature differences, and relay statuses. Fault History lists fault codes and occurrence days. 2 Week History provides operational hours and cycles for various heating and cooling stages.

Supreme Electric Furnace User Menus

Provides status (current airflow, active electric elements, firmware version) and AC/HP settings (heat pump size, mode, airflow per ton, 1st stage cooling CFM%).

Alizé Heat Pump User Menus

Provides status (compressor frequency, outdoor fan speed, coil/tube/compressor temperatures, firmware version), CFM/TON settings (for heating, cooling, dehumidification), Defrost settings (fan percentage during defrost, auxiliary heating use), and Reset options.

7. Record of Thermostat Options

This section is for quick reference, allowing the installing dealer to record selected options for equipment settings and home comfort preferences. It includes settings for Air Filter Maintenance, UV Lamp Maintenance, Humidifier Pad Maintenance, Temperature display (°F/°C), Beeper (On/Off), EMR (On/Off), Max Heat Setpoint Temp, Min Cool Setpoint Temp, Humidity Display Adjust, Temperature Offset, Continuous Fan Speed (High/Medium/Low), and Keypad Backlight (On/Off). Default values are provided.

For Servicing: Installing Dealer, Phone, Date Installed fields are provided for manual entry.
