5. Parameter Setting

5.1. Emissivity Setting

5.1.1. Definition

The radiant power or emissivity "ε" is a value between 0 and 1 that indicates an object's ability to emit energy in the infrared frequency range. This parameter depends on both the material composing the object and its finish (e.g., object's paintwork). The parameter "ε" is set by default to 0.95 because it has been found in practice that about 90% of objects have a radiant power equal to this value. Determining this parameter is critical for shiny or polished surfaces. To estimate emissivity under these conditions, cover the measurement area with black tape or paint, wait for the area to reach stable temperature, and then take the measurement. Compare the reading with the measurement taken using a traditional contact thermometer.

5.1.2. Emissivity Adjustment (HT3301)

  1. Using the MODE button, select the EMS parameter (see paragraph 4.4.1).
  2. Press and hold the trigger until "SCAN" flashes in the upper left of the display.
  3. Under the conditions of step 2, while still holding the trigger, press and hold the Laser/Backlight button until EMS flashes on the display.
  4. Connect the K-type probe, place it in contact with the surface to be measured, and take an infrared measurement at the same point.
  5. Press the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the emissivity until stable and similar values are obtained on both displays. The calculated emissivity value will appear in the upper part of the display.
  6. Press MODE or the trigger to return to standard measurement.

Notes:

5.1.3. Emissivity Adjustment (HT3310)

  1. Using the MODE button, select the EMS parameter (see paragraph 4.4.1).
  2. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to set the desired value.
  3. Press the MODE button or the trigger to perform the measurement.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Temperature Measurement

6.1.1. Infrared Measurement

  1. Using the MODE button, select the additional parameter value (see par 4.4.1).
  2. Hold the instrument and point it towards the object whose temperature you want to measure.
  3. Press the trigger to turn on the instrument and start the measurement. If the display does not light up, check the battery status and replace it if necessary. During the measurement, the LCD display will show the SCAN symbol, the Temperature value, and the value of the selected additional parameter.
  4. Release the trigger to stop the measurement and lock the display to the last read value.
  5. The instrument will automatically turn off approximately 7 seconds after the measurement stops.
  6. Figure 5 indicates the ratio between the distance from the instrument to the object and the measurement spot area. As can be observed, the spot size (S) increases with distance (D). The instrument's focal point is 914mm (36"). The displayed spot area dimensions indicate the zones that enclose 90% of the detected energy.

HT3301 - Measurement Area

HT3310 - Measurement Area

Figure 5: Diameter of the surface S as a function of the distance from the object D (in mm)

Figure 6: Measurement spot area

Yes No

Ensure that the object whose temperature you want to measure has a dimension at least equal to the measurement spot area (see Fig. 6). The smaller the object, the shorter the distance to the object should be. If precision is important, ensure the object's dimension is at least twice the spot area. To measure "Hot Spots", point the thermometer towards the object and then move the instrument along the object until the hot spot is found.

6.1.2. Temperature Measurement with K-type Probe (HT3301 only)

  1. Press the MODE button until the TK parameter is selected (see paragraph 4.4.1).
  2. Disable the laser pointer using the dedicated button.
  3. Connect the K-type probe to the dedicated inputs, respecting the polarity indicated on the instrument and the probe itself.
  4. Press the trigger to turn on the instrument and start the measurement. If the display does not light up, check the battery status and replace it if necessary. During the measurement, the LCD display will show the SCAN symbol and the temperature value in the lower right corner of the display.
  5. Release the trigger to stop the measurement and lock the display to the last read value.
  6. The instrument will automatically turn off approximately 7 seconds after the measurement stops.

7. Memory Operations (HT3301 only)

7.1. Storing Results

  1. With the trigger pressed, use the MODE button until the LOG symbol appears in the lower left part of the display.
  2. The memory location value will be displayed next to LOG.
  3. Take the measurement. To store the value, press the Laser/Backlight button (SET).
  4. The stored value will be displayed in the lower right corner of the display. The corresponding unit of measurement (°C / °F) will also be stored.

7.2. Recalling Data to Display

  1. Press the MODE button until the LOG symbol appears on the display.
  2. The memory location and the corresponding stored value are shown on the display. If the memory location is unused, the symbol "- - -" will be displayed.

  1. The instrument you purchased is a precision instrument. During use and storage, follow the recommendations listed in this manual to avoid possible damage or hazards during use.
  2. Do not use the instrument in environments characterized by high humidity or high temperatures. Do not expose directly to sunlight.
  3. Always turn off the instrument after use. If you plan not to use the instrument for a long period, remove the battery to prevent leakage of liquids that could damage the internal circuits of the instrument.

8.2. Battery Replacement

When the symbol ? appears on the display, replace the battery.

ATTENTION

Only qualified technicians can perform this operation. Before performing this operation, ensure all cables have been disconnected from the input terminals.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover (see Fig. 4).
  2. Remove the discharged battery, insert the new battery, and close the battery compartment cover.
  3. Do not dispose of used batteries in the environment. Use the appropriate containers for disposal.

8.3. Instrument Cleaning

To clean the instrument, use a soft, dry cloth. Never use damp cloths, solvents, water, etc.

8.4. End of Life

ATTENTION: The symbol shown indicates that the equipment, battery, and its accessories must be collected separately and treated correctly.
