Introduction
This document provides a quick start guide for the Midas M32 LIVE Digital Console. It covers the essential features, controls, and connections to get you started with your new console.
Control Surface Overview
The M32 LIVE features a comprehensive control surface designed for intuitive operation. Key sections include:
- CONFIG/PREAMP: Adjusts preamp gain, applies phantom power (48V), reverses channel phase (Ø), and includes a low-cut filter. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- GATE/DYNAMICS: Engages and adjusts the noise gate and compressor thresholds. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- EQUALISER: Allows adjustment of EQ bands, type, gain, frequency, and bandwidth. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- BUS SENDS: Quickly adjusts bus sends for selected banks. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- RECORDER: Connects external memory for firmware updates, saving show data, and recording performances. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- MAIN BUS: Assigns channels to the main mono or stereo bus. Adjusts overall send level to the mono bus. Access detailed parameters via the VIEW button.
- MAIN DISPLAY: The central color screen for navigating and controlling graphical elements, effects, and detailed parameters.
- MONITOR: Adjusts monitor and headphone output levels, mono monitoring, and dimming. Access further monitor functions via the VIEW button.
- TALKBACK: Connects a talkback microphone, adjusts talkback level, and selects talkback destinations. Access talkback routing via the VIEW button.
- SCENES: Used to save and recall automation scenes for different console configurations. Refer to the User Manual for more details.
- ASSIGN: Assigns rotary controls and buttons to various parameters for instant access to commonly used functions. Refer to the User Manual for more details.
- MUTE GROUPS: Activates mute groups for silencing channels. Refer to MUTE GRP in the Main Display section for more details.
- INPUT CHANNELS: Features 16 input channel strips across four layers (INPUTS 1-16, INPUTS 17-32, AUX IN/USB, BUS MAST). Each channel strip includes SEL, SOLO, MUTE buttons, an LED display for signal level, and an LCD Scribble Strip.
- GROUP/BUS CHANNELS: Offers eight channel strips assigned to layers like GROUP DCA 1-8, BUS 1-8, BUS 9-16, and MTX 1-6/MAIN C.
- MAIN CHANNEL: Controls the Master Output stereo mix bus.
Rear Panel Connections
- MONITOR/CONTROL ROOM OUTPUTS: XLR or 1/4" cables for studio monitors. Includes 12V/5W lamp connection.
- OUTPUTS 1-16: Send analog audio to external equipment via XLR cables. Outputs 15 & 16 carry main stereo bus signals by default.
- INPUTS 1-32: Connect audio sources (microphones, line level) via XLR cables.
- POWER: IEC mains socket and ON/OFF switch.
- DN32-LIVE INTERFACE CARD: Transmits up to 32 channels of audio to/from a computer via USB 2.0 and records up to 32 channels to SD/SDHC cards.
- REMOTE CONTROL INPUTS: Connect to PC for remote control via Shielded Ethernet cable.
- MIDI IN/OUT: Send/receive MIDI commands via 5-pin DIN cables.
- AES/EBU OUT: Send digital audio via 3-pin AES/EBU XLR cable.
- ULTRANET: Connect to personal monitoring systems (e.g., Behringer P16) via Shielded Ethernet cable.
- AES50 A/B: Transmit up to 96 channels in/out via Shielded Ethernet cables.
- AUX IN/OUT: Connect to/from external equipment via 1/4" or RCA cables.
Main Display Functions
The Main Display is the central hub for controlling the console's functions. Key sections accessible via the SCREEN SELECTION BUTTONS include:
- HOME: Overview of selected channel, with tabs for signal path (home), configuration (config), gate, dynamics (dyn), EQ, sends, and main output.
- METERS: Displays various level meters for different signal paths.
- ROUTING: Manages all signal patching, allowing routing of internal signals to/from physical I/O connectors. Tabs include home, out 1-16, aux out, p16 out, card out, aes50-a, aes50-b, and xlr out configuration.
- SETUP: Controls global console functions like display settings, sample rates, synchronization, user settings, and network configuration. Tabs include global, config, remote, network, scribble strip, preamps, and card configuration.
- LIBRARY: Allows loading and saving of channel presets, effects, and routing scenarios. Tabs include channel, effects, and routing.
- EFFECTS: Controls the eight stereo effects processors. Users can select effects, configure I/O paths, monitor levels, and adjust parameters. Tabs include home and fx1-8.
- MUTE GRP: Allows quick assignment and control of the console's six mute groups.
- UTILITY: A supplemental screen for copy, paste, library, and customization functions, always used in conjunction with another screen.
ROTARY CONTROLS: Six rotary controls adjust elements above them and can be pushed for button-press functions.
UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT NAVIGATION CONTROLS: Navigate between screens and pages. Used for confirmation/cancellation.
Firmware Updates & USB Stick Recording
Firmware Updates:
- Download the latest console firmware from the Midas website to a USB memory stick.
- Press and hold the VIEW button in the RECORDER section while powering on the console to enter update mode.
- Insert the USB memory stick into the top panel USB connector.
- The console will automatically update the firmware. If the USB drive is not ready, the update may fail.
- The update process takes 2-3 minutes longer than a normal boot.
USB Stick Recording:
- Insert a USB stick into the RECORDER section and press VIEW.
- Configure recorder settings on the second page.
- Press the fifth rotary control to start recording.
- Press the first rotary control to stop. Wait for the ACCESS light to turn off before removing the stick.
- Notes: USB stick must be FAT formatted. Max record time is approx. 3 hours per file (2 GB file size limit). Recording is 16-bit, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.
