Digital Console for Live and Studio with 40 Input Channels, 16 Midas PRO Microphone Preamplifiers and 25 Mix Buses and Live Multitrack Recording

Introduction

This guide provides essential information to get started with your Midas M32R LIVE digital console. It covers the main control surface features, rear panel connections, and basic operations.

Control Surface Overview

The Midas M32R LIVE features a comprehensive control surface designed for intuitive operation. Key sections include:

  • CONFIG/PREAMP: Adjusts preamp gain, applies phantom power (+48V), reverses channel phase (Ø), and provides access to detailed parameters via the Main Display. Includes a LOW CUT filter.
  • GATE/DYNAMICS: Engages and adjusts the noise gate and compressor thresholds.
  • EQUALISER: Allows adjustment of four frequency bands (LOW, LO MID, HI MID, HIGH) with controls for GAIN, FREQUENCY, and WIDTH. EQ types can be cycled using the MODE button.
  • TALKBACK: Connects a talkback microphone via XLR, adjusts talkback level, and allows selection of talkback destinations (TALK A/TALK B).
  • MONITOR: Controls monitor and headphone output levels, with options for MONO monitoring and DIM to reduce volume.
  • RECORDER: Connects external memory for firmware updates, saving/loading show data, and recording performances.
  • BUS SENDS: Accesses detailed parameters for bus sends and allows quick adjustment via rotary controls.
  • MAIN BUS: Assigns channels to the main mono or stereo bus and controls the overall send level to the mono bus.
  • MAIN DISPLAY: The central hub for editing and monitoring most console parameters, including access to over 60 virtual effects.
  • ASSIGN: Allows assignment of rotary controls and buttons to various parameters for quick access to frequently used functions.
  • LAYER SELECT: Switches between different input channel banks (INPUTS 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, 25-36), FX RET, AUX IN/USB, and BUS 1-16 masters.
  • INPUT CHANNELS: Features eight input channel strips with SEL, SOLO, MUTE buttons, LED level meters, and LCD scribble strips.
  • GROUP/BUS CHANNELS: Provides eight channel strips for DCA groups, Mix Bus masters, and Matrix outputs.
  • MAIN CHANNEL: Controls the Master Output stereo mix bus, with SEL, SOLO, MUTE buttons, and a CLR SOLO button to clear all solo functions.

Rear Panel Connections

The rear panel provides a variety of input and output connections:

  • MONITOR/CONTROL ROOM OUTPUTS: XLR or 1/4" connections for studio monitors, with a 12V/5W lamp connection.
  • AUX IN/OUT: 1/4" or RCA connections for external equipment.
  • INPUTS 1-16: XLR inputs for audio sources like microphones and line-level sources.
  • POWER: IEC mains socket and ON/OFF switch.
  • OUTPUTS 1-8: XLR outputs for sending analog audio to external equipment. Outputs 15 & 16 carry the main stereo bus signals.
  • DN32-LIVE INTERFACE CARD: Supports up to 32 channels of audio via USB 2.0 and recording to SD/SDHC cards.
  • REMOTE CONTROL INPUTS: Ethernet connection for PC remote control.
  • MIDI IN/OUT: 5-pin DIN connectors for MIDI commands.
  • ULTRANET: Ethernet connection for personal monitoring systems (e.g., Behringer P16).
  • AES50 A/B: Ethernet connections for up to 96 channels of audio input/output.

Main Display Functions

The Main Display is central to operating the M32R LIVE, providing visual feedback and access to numerous parameters:

  • DISPLAY SCREEN: Features a color screen with dedicated rotary controls and cursor buttons for navigation and parameter adjustment.
  • MAIN/SOLO METERS: A triple 24-segment meter displaying main bus, center, and solo bus levels.
  • SCREEN SELECTION BUTTONS: Eight illuminated buttons to access master screens like HOME, METERS, ROUTING, LIBRARY, EFFECTS, SETUP, MONITOR, SCENES, and MUTE GRP. Each screen offers specific functions and adjustable parameters.
  • ROTARY CONTROLS: Six rotary controls for adjusting on-screen elements, with push-button functionality for dual status controls.
  • NAVIGATION CONTROLS: UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT buttons for navigating between pages and confirming/canceling actions.
