Before You Use Your Dishwasher
It is your personal responsibility and obligation to ensure your dishwasher:
- Is installed by a qualified installer.
- Is installed where it is protected from the elements.
- Is installed on a floor strong enough to support its weight.
- Is properly connected to electricity, water, and drain.
- Is properly electrically grounded.
- Is not used by children or anyone unable to operate it properly.
- Is properly maintained.
Refer to installation instructions for complete information.
Important Safety Instructions
WARNING: When using your dishwasher, follow basic precautions, including the following:
- Read all instructions before using the dishwasher.
- DO NOT let children play with or operate your dishwasher.
- DO NOT reach into the area below the bottom rack until the Heating Element has cooled for at least 20 minutes.
- DO NOT wash plastic items unless marked "Dishwasher Safe" or the equivalent. If not marked, check manufacturer's recommendations.
- Store dishwasher detergent in a cool, dry place WHERE CHILDREN CAN'T REACH IT.
- Use ONLY detergents and rinse aids recommended for use in a dishwasher.
- REMEMBER, use your dishwasher only for the job it was designed to do.
- Locate sharp items and knives so that they are not likely to damage the door seal or cut the user.
- Properly connect to electricity and water.
- DISHWASHER MUST BE ELECTRICALLY GROUNDED. Read the Installation Instructions for details.
- DO NOT use your dishwasher unless all enclosure panels are properly in place.
- Be sure your dishwasher is installed on a level floor that will hold the weight, and in an area suitable for its size and use.
- DO NOT sit or stand on or abuse the dishwasher door or dish racks.
- DO NOT tamper with controls.
- When discarding an old dishwasher, always remove the door to prevent accidental entrapment.
- CAUTION: If hot water has not been used recently (usually two weeks or longer), explosive hydrogen gases may build up in the water heater and the hot water pipes. To prevent injury or damage, before using your dishwasher, turn on all hot water faucets and allow water to run for several minutes. This will allow gases to escape. Do not smoke or use any open flame near the faucet while it is open.
- Always disconnect electrical power to the dishwasher before attempting to service.

POWER CLEAN® Module: This module is designed to keep wash and rinse water clean. It also grinds up and removes food particles. Some sounds like chopping, grinding, crunching, or buzzing may be heard during operation when hard items enter the module.
Model and Serial Number: Keep your Model and Serial Numbers handy for service calls. Record them in the spaces provided.
POWER CLEAN® Washing System
Your dishwasher cleans by spraying hot, clean water and detergent against soiled dish surfaces. Water fills to the heating element level, is pumped through rotating spray arms and the POWER CLEAN Module, which removes food particles. Soiled water is pumped out and replaced with clean water during the cycle.
Loading for Cleaning: Load dishes so soiled surfaces face the powerful spray from rotating arms. This ensures all surfaces are reached.
POWER CLEAN® Module Function: The module removes food particles from the water, stores them, and then washes them down the drain.
Step-Saving Preparation for Washing
Pre-rinsing is not necessary. Simply remove large pieces, bones, and other hard items. The POWER CLEAN Module will handle food particles. Be aware that hard items like fruit seeds, nuts, or egg shells may cause audible sounds (chopping, grinding, crunching, buzzing) from the module. DO NOT LET METALLIC ITEMS GET INTO THE POWER CLEAN MODULE.
Hot Water is a Must
Hot water dissolves and activates detergent, dissolves grease, and helps dry glasses spot-free. Ensure loads are washed in hot water (at least 140°F / 60°C).
To ensure a reliable hot water supply:
- Maintain a 140°F (60°C) water supply at your central water heater. Check temperature by running the nearest hot water faucet until it's as hot as possible, then measuring with a thermometer. Adjust the water heater thermostat if necessary.
- Use the HI-TEMP WASH Option. This option delays the cycle if needed until the water reaches 145°F (63°C), allowing you to lower your water heater setting without compromising wash performance.
Proper Loading
Always load dishes so soiled surfaces face the spray from rotating spray arms. Water must drain off completely for best drying. Separate items to allow spray to reach all surfaces.
Top Rack Loading
The top rack is designed for cups, glasses, and smaller items. Place items with open ends facing down for cleaning and draining. Load glasses only in the top rack; the bottom rack is not designed for them. Place items in the rows between prongs to prevent breakage. Ensure lightweight items are held firmly. China, crystal, and delicate items must not touch each other during operation.
Adjustable Top Rack: The top rack height can be adjusted. Raise or lower sides by turning the knob clockwise (raise) or counterclockwise (lower) to accommodate taller items.
Bottom Rack Loading
Place plates, soup bowls, etc., between prongs and facing the spray. Securely place heavily soiled cookware face down. Do not load glasses, cups, or plastic items in the bottom rack. Load cookie sheets, cake pans, and other items at the sides or back to avoid blocking the detergent dispenser or silverware basket. Ensure pot handles and other items do not obstruct spray arm rotation.
Loading Silverware and Cutlery Baskets
Load forks and spoons so they don't nest together, as spray cannot reach nested items. Mix items in each section of the basket. Small items like baby bottle caps or jar lids can go in any section. Place sharp items (knives, forks, skewers) point down. The silverware basket can be loaded in place or removed. Remove the basket before unloading racks to prevent spilling water.
Basket Removal: Slide the basket toward the top of the door, lift off holding buttons, and replace in reverse order.
Basket Opening: Unhook the latch to open. Ensure the cover is latched before closing the door or pulling out the rack.
The cutlery basket can be used for long items. Remove and tip contents onto a cutting board for safe unloading.
Adding Detergent
Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. Other detergents may be too mild or too sudsy. Detergent brands vary in phosphorus content, which softens water and prevents spots. If you have hard water and low phosphorus detergent, you may need more detergent or a higher phosphorus brand.
Add detergent just before washing. Use fresh, dry detergent stored in a cool, dry place.
The Detergent Dispenser
The dispenser has two sections: one with a cover and one without. Use both sections for cycles with two washes. Use only the covered section for cycles with one wash. Push the cover down until latched. It opens automatically during the main wash. Detergent in the open section falls into the dishwasher when the door is closed.
- Covered section only: NORMAL WASH, LOW ENERGY WASH, CHINA CRYSTAL Cycles.
- Both sections: POTS & PANS, HEAVY WASH Cycles.
How Much Detergent to Use
The amount depends on water hardness. Too little results in unclean dishes; too much in soft water can etch glassware. Consult your local water department or water softener company for your water hardness level.
- HARD (8+ grains): Fill 1 or both sections to the top line.
- MEDIUM (5-7 grains): Fill 1 or both sections to the middle line.
- SOFT (0-4 grains): Fill one or both sections to the bottom line.
Rinse Aid Dispenser
Rinse aid helps water form droplets and dry spots. Keep the dispenser filled with a rinse aid (e.g., Jet-Dry®). A small amount is released during the final rinse. Check periodically. The Fill Indicator Cap shows when refilling is needed; the center appears clear when the level is low. Keep the dispenser cap tightly closed.
Before Starting Your Dishwasher
- Spin the Upper Spray Arm to ensure it turns freely.
- Close and latch the door securely.
- Run hot water at the nearest sink until it is hot, then turn it off.
Starting Your Dishwasher
- Push a Clean Selector Button for the desired cycle.
- With the Cycle Control Knob pushed in, turn it to point at the desired cycle mark.
- Push Option Selector Buttons for desired options (e.g., AIR DRY for RINSE & HOLD).
- Pull out the Cycle Control Knob to start the cycle.
Cycle Control Panel: Features include Clean Selector Buttons, Option Selector Buttons, Water Heating Hold Signal Light, DELAY START Signal Light, and the Cycle Control Knob.
The AIR DRY Option
Air in the dishwasher is heated during the "dry" part of cycles. With AIR DRY selected, the air is not heated, saving energy but potentially increasing drying time and water spotting.
HI-TEMP WASHING Option
This option heats water for the main wash and final rinse to 145°F (63°C), except for the RINSE & HOLD Cycle.
Using DELAY START
Select a cycle, then options. Push the Control Knob in and turn clockwise to set the delay time (1-6 hours) before the cycle begins. Pull out the Control Knob to start the delay timer. The DELAY START Signal Light will illuminate.
Notes: Items can be added while the timer counts down. Close and latch the door. The timer will not advance if the door is unlatched. RINSE & HOLD, LOW ENERGY WASH, and CHINA CRYSTAL Cycles cannot be delayed.
To Add a Dish After Starting
Ensure the Cycle Control Knob has not passed the LOW ENERGY WASH cycle. Unlatch the door to stop the cycle, but do not open it until spray arms stop spinning. Open the door and add the dish.
For best results when adding a dish after starting, close the door, wait 30 seconds for air to warm up (reducing moisture from the vent), then latch the door. The dishwasher will resume.
To turn off, turn the Control Knob clockwise slightly until the light goes off. Do not pull out the knob.
Selecting a Cycle
The dishwasher offers several cycles:
- POTS & PANS Cycle: For cooked-on/baked-on foods. Includes water heating. Cycle time approx. 1.5-2 hours.
- HEAVY WASH Cycle: For heavily soiled loads. Double wash. Cycle time approx. 70 minutes.
- NORMAL WASH Cycle: For normal, everyday loads. Cycle time approx. 60 minutes.
- LOW ENERGY WASH Cycle: For pre-rinsed or lightly soiled loads. Uses less hot water and energy. Cycle time approx. 55 minutes.
- CHINA CRYSTAL Cycle: Shortened wash and gentle dry for china/crystal. Cycle time approx. 35 minutes. Use AIR DRY only.
- RINSE & HOLD Cycle: For rinsing items to be washed later. Cycle time approx. 10 minutes.
Changing a Setting
You can change a setting anytime during a cycle. Push in the Cycle Control Knob to stop the cycle, turn it clockwise to the new cycle, ensure dispensers are filled, and pull out the knob to start. Use the RESET OPTIONS Button to change selected options.
Energy Saving Tips
Save energy by following these tips:
- Wash full loads: A half-filled dishwasher uses the same energy as a full one.
- Use LOW ENERGY WASH Cycle: It uses less hot water and energy.
- Air dry dishes: Allow longer drying times (overnight) when rapid drying isn't needed.
- Load correctly: Prevents poor washing and rewashing.
- Don't pre-rinse: Select the correct cycle and use the recommended detergent.
- Use during off-peak hours: Consult local utilities for recommended times to reduce energy demand.
Special Tips on Dishwasher Use
Use your dishwasher only for its intended purpose. Some items require special care or are not dishwasher safe.
- Aluminum: May lose shine and darken. Avoid placing directly in front of the detergent dispenser to prevent spotting or discoloration.
- Colored Aluminum: May fade. Follow manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
- China: Load carefully, preventing pieces from touching. Test hand-painted, metal-trimmed, or antique china for fading by washing one piece daily for several weeks. Delicate items should be hand washed.
- Crystal and Glasses: Load in the top rack only, between prongs, to prevent bumping. Load larger items in the bottom rack to reduce spray force on glassware. Delicate items should be hand washed.
- Flatware: Rinse salty or acidic foods promptly. Clean tarnished items with silver polish. Antique finishes may be removed by detergent. Sterling silver may form a film due to silver-chlorine reaction, removable with polish. Gold flatware is not dishwasher safe.
- Cast Iron Utensils: Seasoning will be removed, leading to rust. Wash by hand and re-season if necessary.
- Plastics: Place in the upper rack only. Check for "Dishwasher Safe" marking.
- Non-stick Finish Utensils: Most are dishwasher safe; check manufacturer's suggestions.
- Wood: Wooden items may warp or lose finish. Do not wash cutting boards, wooden bowls, or knives with wooden handles.
- Pewter or Pewter-like Materials: May streak, discolor, and pit. Hand wash with mild detergent.
- Dishwasher Care & Cleaning: Use a soft damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent for regular cleaning. Hard water may cause a white film; clean inside with dishwasher detergent and water if needed.
Common Dishwashing Problems
Problem | Caused By | Solution |
---|---|---|
Spotting and Filming | Hard water | Use detergent to capacity with high phosphorus content. Consider a water softener. |
Water not hot enough | Ensure water temperature is at least 140°F (60°C). Adjust water heater or use HI-TEMP WASH Option. Run hot water at sink before starting. | |
Not enough detergent or improper detergent | Use more detergent, preferably with high phosphorus content, especially with hard water. | |
"Old" detergent | Use only fresh, dry detergent. Store properly and discard old, lumpy detergent. Do not fill dispensers until ready to start. | |
Small particles deposited on items | Improper loading | Load so spray reaches all surfaces and items drain properly. Do not overload or nest items. Ensure large items don't block dispenser spray. |
No rinse aid | Check and fill the rinse aid dispenser. Try a vinegar rinse for spots/film: wash/rinse, remove metal items, add 2 cups white vinegar to a container on the bottom rack, run a complete cycle. Drying without heat may cause spotting. | |
AIR DRY Setting used | Allow more time for drying or use HEAT DRY. Plastic items may need towel drying. | |
Dishes not dry | Spray arm or arms not rotating freely | Check spray arms are not obstructed by utensils and turn freely. |
"Old" detergent | Use fresh, dry detergent. Discard old detergent. | |
Not enough detergent or improper detergent | Use more detergent with high phosphorus content. | |
Water not hot enough | Ensure water temperature is at least 140°F (60°C). Adjust water heater or use HI-TEMP WASH Option. | |
Water pressure may be low, dishwasher not filling properly | Do not use water for other purposes while dishwasher is running. | |
Water not hot enough | Ensure water temperature is at least 140°F (60°C). Adjust water heater or use HI-TEMP WASH Option. | |
Black marks on china or white utensils | Improper loading | Load so spray reaches surfaces and items drain properly. Do not overload or nest items. |
Aluminum utensils rubbing against items during washing | Load aluminum utensils carefully, especially foil containers, so they don't touch dishes. Remove marks with a plastic scouring pad and mild abrasive cleanser. | |
Chipping or breaking glassware | Improper loading | Do not overload. Load glasses in the top rack only, between prongs, not over them. Glasses loaded over prongs may chip or break. |
Etching - permanent filming which cannot be removed | Too much detergent in soft water | Reduce detergent amount. Use detergent with lower phosphorus content. Check for rainbow hue on glasses (sign of etching). |
Inadequate rinsing | Ensure dishes and glassware are loaded properly for adequate rinsing and draining. Do not overload. | |
Dishes & Interior of dishwasher yellow or brown | Iron or manganese in water | Temporary remedy: Run a "one wash" cycle, stop when filled, add ½ to 1½ cup citric acid crystals, close and latch door to complete. Permanent solution: Install an iron or manganese filter. |
Small dark spots on flatware (stainless steel, silver plate, or sterling or rust spots on stainless steel) | Allowing salty or acidic foods (mayonnaise, vinegar, fruit juices, salad dressings, milk) to remain on flatware. | Rinse flatware that will stand for hours before washing (use Rinse & Hold). Clean stained items with silver polish. Do not put stainless steel and silver flatware in the same basket compartment, as contact can damage silver. |
Undissolved detergent coming in contact with flatware | Remove spots with silver polish. Avoid spilling dry detergent on wet flatware. | |
Bronze tarnish on silverplate | Silverplate is worn off. Exposed base metal takes on a bronzed hue. | Remove tarnish with silver polish. Have silver replated. |
Water left in bottom of dishwasher | Dishwasher cycle not completed | Allow dishwasher to complete its cycle. |
Clogged drain air gap | Some plumbing codes require a drain air gap. Ensure it is clean to allow proper draining. The air gap is not part of the dishwasher warranty. |
