Simplicity Model 725 & Model 700 Riding Tractors
Owner's Manual and Parts List
This manual provides essential information for the operation, maintenance, and repair of Simplicity Model 725 and Model 700 Riding Tractors. It includes detailed instructions, diagrams, and parts lists to assist owners.
Introduction and Initial Setup
The tractor is shipped mostly assembled, with the rear lift group's lift lever assembly requiring installation. The front axle is locked for shipment with a 3/8" bolt, which must be removed before operation.
Rear Lift Group Installation
Detailed steps are provided for installing the rear lift group, involving attaching the hitch member, lift assembly, and connecting the rear lift rod. Figures illustrate the process, showing components like hex cap screws, clevis, spacer, and cotter pin.
Lubrication
The tractor requires lubrication at five grease fittings: two on the front spindles, two for the steering mechanism, and one on the rear axle tube. It is recommended to wipe fittings before greasing to prevent dirt contamination. Bearings are factory greased and should be cleaned and repacked annually.
Lubrication Points Illustrated:
- Figure 4: Shows a grease fitting on the front wheel (spindle).
- Figure 5: Depicts a roller bearing, likely within the wheel hub.
- Figure 6: Illustrates a grease fitting on the steering mechanism.
- Figure 7: Shows a grease fitting on the rear axle tube.
Lifting the Hood
Instructions are provided for swinging the tractor hood forward to access the engine. This involves unlatching the front, lifting the rear slightly, and pulling it forward. Adjustments may be needed by loosening specific nuts or cap screws if binding occurs.
Engine and Drivetrain Maintenance
Engine: Service the air cleaner and crankcase as per the engine service manual. Ensure the air cleaner is clean. Change crankcase oil every 25 hours of operation. A funnel and extension are included for oil changes.
Transmission: The transmission has a capacity of 1/2 quart of SAE 90 oil. Check drain plug tightness and axle tube oil seals periodically. Maintain oil level at the lower edge of the filler plug hole.
Bevel Gear Housing: Holds 1 pint of SAE 90 oil. Check drain plug tightness and oil seals. Keep oil level at the filler plug.
Tires: For comfort, release some shipping pressure. Recommended operating pressures are 12 psi for front tires and 14 psi for rear tires.
Battery: Keep the battery clean and dry, ensure it is securely fastened, and check cable connections. Keep vent holes open. Full maintenance instructions are provided separately. Remove and store the battery in a charged condition during winter storage.
Maintenance Diagrams:

Starting the Engine
Electric Starter: Place gear shift in neutral, apply parking brake. Set choke to "CHOKE". Set throttle to mid-position, turn ignition key to "ON", and press starter button. Return choke to "RUN" as engine warms.
Manual Starter: Place gear shift in neutral, ensure tractor is on level ground. Pull lift lever handle back and raise seat. Set choke to "CHOKE". Set throttle to mid-position, turn ignition key to "ON". Engage starter rope knot in pulley groove, wind rope clockwise, and pull rapidly to start. Return choke to "RUN" as engine warms.
Starting Diagrams:
- Figure 12: Shows controls: Throttle Control Lever, Starter Switch, Gear Shift Lever, Ignition Switch, Choke Lever.
- Figure 13: Details the choke lever and ignition switch area.
- Figure 14: Illustrates the manual starter pulley and rope engagement.
Stopping the Engine and Tractor Operation
To stop the engine, disengage the clutch, place the gear shift in any gear, and turn the ignition key to "OFF". Engage the clutch to hold the tractor, apply the parking brake, and remove the ignition key.
Tractor Operation: To shift gears, depress the brake and clutch pedal, move the shift lever to the desired position, and gradually release the pedal. Pause briefly in neutral when shifting between ranges. Adjust throttle for desired speed.
Adjustments
Parking Brake Adjustment: Depress the foot pedal until the brake holds securely. Use a screw to wedge the lever in the depressed position.
Clutch and Brake Adjustment: Adjust hex nuts (A) for 3/4" clearance. Tighten the brake band around the drum and adjust screw (C) for 1" clearance. Adjust nuts (D) and (F) to ensure free pivoting of the clutch link and adequate clutch travel (at least 1-1/2" before touching transmission case).
Adjustment Diagrams:
- Figure 15: Shows the clutch and brake pedal.
- Figure 16: Illustrates parking brake adjustment.
- Figure 17: Details clutch/brake adjustment clearance (3/4").
- Figure 18: Shows brake band adjustment clearance (1").
- Figure 19: Depicts clutch link adjustment points (D, F) and idler pulley (G).
Power Take-Off (PTO)
A power take-off attachment is required for operating rotary mowers and sickle bars. The attachment includes a V-pulley, drive belt, belt guard, and belt stop.
Attachment Procedure: Mount the V-pulley to the bevel gear shaft. Attach the drive belt and belt guard. Position the drive bracket assembly onto the bevel gear housing and secure with a pivot pin. Mount the bracket to the tractor frame. Ensure proper alignment of pulleys and belts. Adjust belt tension via the idler pulley.
PTO Lubrication: Lubricate the drive bracket assembly's grease fitting with automotive grease. Apply SAE 20 oil to pivot points and idler pulley bearings periodically.
PTO Operation: Controlled by the clutch lever. Forward position disengages power; back position engages power by applying tension to the idler pulley.
PTO Adjustment: Ensure clutch lever assembly and rod pivot freely. Adjust idler pulley tension for proper belt engagement, avoiding excessive tension to prevent premature wear.
PTO Diagrams:
