1 Introduction

This manual is valid for the KeContact P40. The components illustrated are example graphics; actual device versions may differ.

1.1 Safety Information Presentation

The manual contains warnings and hazard information. Symbols used have the following meanings:

  • GEFAHR! (DANGER!): Indicates that death or severe personal injury will occur if precautions are not taken.
  • WARNUNG! (WARNING!): Indicates that death or severe personal injury may occur if precautions are not taken.
  • VORSICHT! (CAUTION!): Indicates that minor personal injury may occur if precautions are not taken.
  • Achtung (Note): Indicates that property damage may occur if precautions are not taken.
  • ESD: Warns of potential consequences when touching electrostatically sensitive components.
  • Information: Marks application tips and useful information, not warnings.

1.2 Purpose of the Document

This document provides information for individuals operating a KeContact P40 charging station.

1.3 Intended Use

The charging station is designed for charging electric vehicles. Connecting other devices is not permitted. Vehicles requiring ventilation during charging are not supported. The KeContact P40 is developed according to relevant safety standards.

1.4 Warranty

Only manufacturer-approved maintenance may be performed. Tampering with the device voids the warranty. Devices with broken seals must not be operated and should be returned for repair or replacement.

2 Safety Instructions

WARNING! Hazard of electric shock and fire!

  • All work requiring opening the protective cover must be performed by qualified electricians responsible for compliance with standards.
  • Use a separate disconnecting device to interrupt the power supply.
  • Operate the charging station only in perfect condition. Damaged stations must be taken out of service immediately and repaired or replaced by qualified personnel.
  • Repairs must only be carried out by trained electricians using manufacturer-approved spare parts.
  • Unauthorized modifications are prohibited.
  • Store and transport the charging station only with the protective cover closed and in its original packaging.
  • Do not remove or obscure any labels.
  • Regularly inspect the charging station and charging cable for proper condition. Never use defective, worn, or dirty plugs or cables.
  • Using cable extension sets or adapters of any kind is prohibited.
  • Charging a defective vehicle is forbidden, especially if the vehicle's battery charging system or parking brake is faulty.
  • Do not start fires or heat materials with an open flame within 5 meters of the charging station. Do not store flammable materials or pour flammable liquids nearby.

CAUTION! Risk of injury! Always wind the charging cable onto the cable holder. Children must be supervised during use due to potential hazards like strangulation or electrical dangers.

Note! Potential property damage!

  • When not in use, always plug the charging cable into the holder or use a protective cap.
  • Pull the charging cable by the plug, not the cable itself.
  • Do not place objects on the charging station or plug holder, nor use them as a step.
  • Clean the station with a soft, damp cloth, using mild detergent if necessary.

Failure to observe safety instructions can lead to life-threatening situations, injuries, and device damage!

3 Description of the Charging Station

3.1 Front View (Cable Variant)

The front of the charging station features several components:

  • 1. Housing Cover
  • 2. LED Bar (Status Indicator): Displays the operating status.
  • 3. Touch Button: For interaction with the charging station.
  • 4. Smart Charging Symbol (Optional): Indicates intelligent charging power control.
  • 5. RFID Reader: For contactless authorization.
  • 6. Charging Plug with Cable
  • 7. Plug Holder: For securing the charging cable.

Colors and functions may vary depending on the specific model.

Plug Holder

The plug holder can be mounted directly below or separately from the charging station. Mounting it below can also secure the housing cover.

3.2 Nameplates

Two nameplates are located on the right side of the charging station. These display technical specifications, certifications, manufacturer details, and product codes. The displayed information is a maximum representation and may vary by device variant.

3.3 Product Key (Charging Station Variants)

The product key is a code that defines the specific configuration of the charging station. It includes details such as the device series (e.g., KC-P40), nominal current (e.g., 16A, 32A), region (e.g., EU), cable type, and other options.

4 Status Indicators

The charging station uses an LED bar and an optional Smart Charging Symbol to indicate operating states. An integrated buzzer provides audible signals.

4.1 LED Bar (Status Display)

The LED bar (1) indicates the current operating status and can display different colors, blinking patterns, or pulsing effects. The LED bar is visible only when the station is powered.

Status Display Information

  • Solid Light: Indicates the LED bar is constantly illuminated.
  • Blinking Light: Indicates the LED bar is blinking in various patterns or speeds.
  • Pulsing Light: Indicates the LED bar is pulsing at a steady speed.

Common Operating States

  • Orange Blinking: Station is starting up or performing a software update.
  • Green Blinking (Slow): Station is ready, no vehicle connected, no authorization required.
  • Green Solid: Station is ready, vehicle connected, but no charging requested. No authorization needed.
  • Green Pulsing: Vehicle is charging. If the Smart Charging Symbol is also active, intelligent charging is limiting the power.
  • Green Blinking (Optional, in cycle): Station is ready, vehicle connected, but charging not requested in the last 5 minutes.
  • Blue Blinking (Slow): Station is ready, no vehicle connected, authorization required.
  • Blue Solid: Station is ready, vehicle connected, but authorization (RFID/switch) not yet performed.
  • Blue Blinking: Station is ready, authorization not performed within 5 minutes.
  • Blue Blinking (in cycle): RFID card read and being verified (with tone).
  • Blue/Green Blinking (in cycle): RFID card accepted, charging can start (with tone).

Error Indicators

  • Orange Blinking: Station detected an error (e.g., high temperature) and is attempting to resolve it. No user action required.
  • Red Blinking: An error requires user action. Possible actions: Re-plug the charging cable, restart the station by cycling the power supply. If an RCD trips, check cable/plug and retry charging. If the error persists, have the vehicle checked.
  • Red Blinking (with tone): A serious error requires professional intervention. Turn off power, disconnect the vehicle, and have the station checked by an electrician.
  • No Display: No power supply or a defect.

5 Integrated Energy Meter

Some charging stations are equipped with an integrated energy meter, visible on the right side via a two-line LCD display. This meter measures energy transferred to the vehicle; energy for the station's own consumption is not recorded.

  • Functional Energy Meter: Provides informative evaluation of transferred energy.
  • Metered Energy Meter: Certified for measuring active energy according to MID or MessEV standards, indicated on the nameplate.

Information Metered energy meters have additional installation and operation requirements. Details are available at www.keba.com/emobility-downloads.

5.1 Display Readings for Metered Energy Meter (MID)

The display activates based on certain triggers like station restart, plugging/unplugging the cable, or start/end of a charging session. It shows total energy consumed and firmware version.

5.2 Display Readings for Metered Charging System (MessEV)

Similar to MID, this display shows total energy, current session energy (indicated by a plug symbol), firmware version, and error messages. It also displays identification data for traceability and the current system time.

6 Optional Control Elements

6.1 RFID Reader

The RFID reader (1) allows contactless authorization of charging sessions using cards, tags, or smartphones compliant with ISO 14443 and ISO 15693.

6.2 Touch Button

If the charging current is limited by intelligent charging, the Smart Charging Symbol illuminates. The Touch Button (1) can temporarily override this limitation for the current session, if permitted by the network operator, allowing faster charging.

6.3 Smart Charging Symbol

The Smart Charging Symbol (1) indicates when intelligent charging is reducing the maximum charging power, potentially extending charging time.

  • No Display: Station operates at full configured power.
  • Green/Blue: Intelligent charging is active, limiting current (e.g., PV optimization, OCPP profile). Charging takes longer.
  • Orange: Current charging is limited due to a lack of connection to the higher-level control system (e.g., network issue).
  • Red: Station is in a critical error state.

7 Authorization

Authorization functions depend on the device variant. Options include switch input and RFID module.

7.1 Indicators and Signals

The LED bar displays various patterns during authorization, supported by audible signals:

  • Blue Solid: Station ready, no vehicle connected, authorization required.
  • Blue Blinking (Slow): Station ready, vehicle connected, but no authorization performed yet.
  • Blue Blinking: Station ready, no authorization performed within 5 minutes.
  • Blue Blinking (in cycle): RFID card read and being verified (with tone).
  • Blue/Green Blinking (in cycle): RFID card accepted, charging can start (with tone).
  • Blue/Orange Blinking (in cycle): RFID card rejected (with tone).

7.2 Managing RFID Cards (Learning/Deleting)

Charging can start without authorization by default. To use RFID authorization, cards must first be learned. Management is done via the KEBA eMobility App or the KEBA eMobility Portal.

7.3 RFID Authorization in Charging Network

If a KeContact P40 is a client in a charging network, all RFID cards must be learned on the master device (e.g., KeContact M20). The KeContact P40 cannot act as a master in a network.

8 Charging Process

8.1 Starting a Charging Process

Starting a charging process depends on whether authorization is required, indicated by the LED bar:

  • Blue Solid LED: Waiting for authorization (RFID card or switch input).
  • Green Solid LED: No authorization required to start charging.

Steps to Start Charging:

  1. Connect the charging cable to the vehicle.
  2. If authorization is required: Hold an RFID card to the station. If authorized without a vehicle connected, a vehicle can be connected within 5 minutes.

The vehicle can now initiate charging. If charging is interrupted, the station will attempt to restart it up to 5 times. If unsuccessful after 5 attempts, the station enters an error state. This can be resolved by properly ending the charging process. Contact your service partner for recurring errors.

8.2 Ending a Charging Process

  1. End the charging process on the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the charging cable from the vehicle.
  3. Store the charging cable and connect the plug to the plug holder on the station.

The charging process is now complete.

9 Troubleshooting

10 eMobility App Overview

The KEBA eMobility App serves as an extended user interface for the charging station, enabling:

  • Viewing current status.
  • Starting and stopping charging sessions.
  • Viewing past charging sessions.
  • Adjusting charging power.
  • Accessing extensive configuration options.
  • Managing RFID cards.
  • Performing software updates.

Connection Options:

  • Local connection via Bluetooth®.
  • Connection via LAN/WLAN in your own network.
  • Remote access via the internet from anywhere (requires station internet connection).
  • KEBA eMobility Portal.

App Download:

Download the app from the manufacturer's website: http://www.keba.com/emobility-app. Available on Google Play and the App Store.

App Modes and Configuration:

Initial network settings require a local Bluetooth® connection. Extended configuration is available via LAN, WLAN, or WLAN Hotspot.

  • Setup Guide (Bluetooth®): Select station, establish connection. Requires Bluetooth® PIN and User PWD. QR code scan is an alternative.
  • Network-Configuration-Wizard (Bluetooth®): Configure network connection (LAN, WLAN, Hotspot).
  • Installer Mode (Bluetooth®): Basic electrical settings, access protection via Service Button and Installer PWD. Allows configuration of charging current, voltage, phase rotation, load balancing, and switch inputs/outputs.
  • User Mode (LAN, WLAN, Hotspot): Full functionality. Requires User PWD. Allows starting/stopping charging, extensive configuration, RFID card management, and more.

10.1 Establishing Bluetooth® Connection

  1. Install the KEBA eMobility App.
  2. Enable Bluetooth® on your mobile device.
  3. Ensure the charging station is powered on (Bluetooth® is enabled by default).
  4. Be within 10 meters of the station.
  5. Open the KEBA eMobility App.
  6. Select the station or add a new one.
  7. Enter the station's PIN (found on the device or quick start guide).
  8. Select role (User/Installer) and enter the corresponding password.

Connection to the station is now established.

10.2 Establishing LAN/WLAN Connection

  1. Be within 10 meters of the station.
  2. Open the KEBA eMobility App and establish a Bluetooth® connection.
  3. Use the 'Network-Configuration-Wizard' in the app to set up LAN/WLAN.

The station can then be accessed via LAN/WLAN. Previously used network credentials are saved.

11 eMobility Portal Overview

The KEBA eMobility Portal (https://emobility-portal.keba.com/) is a digital interface for managing your charging stations and networks. It offers features like:

  • Station management across multiple locations.
  • Viewing charging session details.
  • One-click software updates.
  • Planning charging schedules.
  • RFID card management.
  • Filtering and reporting of charging sessions.
  • Advanced configuration options.
  • Inviting other users with different roles.

Initial Portal Setup:

  1. Create a portal account at https://emobility-portal.keba.com/. The account creator gets the 'Owner' role.
  2. Optionally, invite other users with specific roles and permissions.

Registering the Charging Station:

Prerequisites: Station must be operational, connected to the internet (LAN/WLAN), and on the same network as the mobile device with the app. Portal account must be set up.

  1. Log in to the station via the KEBA eMobility App using LAN or WLAN.
  2. Register the station in the portal via the app ('Add Wallbox to Account' menu). Follow on-screen instructions.

Information: The KEBA eMobility Portal and an OCPP backend cannot be used simultaneously.

12 Maintenance

Optical Inspection

The charging station hardware is largely maintenance-free. However, users or operators should regularly inspect the charging plug (including cable) and housing for defects.

Handling Tips:

  • To prolong cable life, avoid kinking, pinching, dragging, or driving over it.
  • Keep the charging plug's contact area clean and away from heat, dirt, and water.
  • When not in use, always plug the charging plug into its holder or use a protective cap.

12.1 Cleaning

Caution! Risk of housing damage! Use a soft, damp cloth. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a mild, solvent-free, non-abrasive cleaning agent. Avoid anionic surfactants.

  • Regularly clean the exterior housing.
  • Failure to follow cleaning instructions can lead to discoloration or damage from heavy soiling (e.g., bird droppings).

12.2 Software Update

The charging station software is subject to EU directives for digital content and must be kept up-to-date for security updates, new features, and bug fixes.

  • OCPP Backend

Information:

  • Updates only occur when no vehicle is connected.
  • Updates can take time; indicated by slow orange blinking of the LED bar.
  • Do not interrupt power during an update; this can corrupt the process.
  • The station restarts automatically after an update.

Software Update via KEBA eMobility App:

  1. Open the KEBA eMobility App and connect to the station.
  2. An available update will be displayed; start it directly from the app.

Alternative Method:

  1. Download the update package from the manufacturer's website.
  2. Copy it to your mobile device.
  3. Open the KEBA eMobility App, connect to the station, and manually select the update package.

Network connection can be LAN or WLAN, depending on the device variant.

Software Update via KEBA eMobility Portal:

If the station is registered and connected to the portal, updates can be initiated conveniently through the portal.

Software Update via OCPP Backend:

Network-wide updates can be managed via the OCPP backend using an HTTP link provided with the software download.

13 Disposal

Caution! Please observe regulations for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment!

  • The crossed-out waste bin symbol indicates that electrical and electronic equipment, including accessories, must be disposed of separately from household waste.

Materials are recyclable according to their labeling. Recycling contributes to environmental protection.

Sustainability: The device contains valuable raw materials that should be reintroduced into the material cycle.
