About this instruction manual: The term "battery", "battery cartridge", or "battery pack" in this manual refers to "portable power pack".

SAFETY WARNINGS

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

Work Area Safety

  • Keep work area clean and well lit.
  • Do not operate in explosive atmospheres (flammable liquids, gases, dust). Sparks can ignite dust/fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away to avoid distractions.

Electrical Safety

  • Match power tool plugs to outlets; do not modify plugs.
  • Avoid contact with earthed/grounded surfaces (pipes, radiators).
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
  • Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
  • Use extension cords suitable for outdoor use when operating outdoors.
  • Use residual current device (RCD) protected supply in damp locations.

Personal Safety

  • Prevent unintentional starting: Ensure the switch is OFF before connecting power/battery, picking up, or carrying the tool.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the tool on.

  • Dress properly: Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair that can get caught in moving parts.
  • If dust extraction/collection facilities are provided, ensure they are connected and used properly.
  • Do not let familiarity lead to complacency; a careless action can cause severe injury.
  • Always wear protective goggles complying with ANSI Z87.1 (USA), EN 166 (Europe), or AS/NZS 1336 (Australia/New Zealand). A face shield is legally required in Australia/New Zealand.

Employers must enforce the use of appropriate safety protective equipment for operators and others in the immediate working area.

Power Tool Use and Care

  • Do not force the power tool; use the correct tool for the application.
  • Do not use the tool if the switch does not operate correctly; it is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect from power source/remove battery before adjustments, accessory changes, or storage to prevent accidental starting.
  • Store idle tools out of reach of children and untrained users.
  • Maintain tools and accessories: Check for misalignment, binding, or breakage. Have damaged tools repaired before use.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean for easier control.
  • Use tools and accessories according to instructions, considering working conditions.
  • Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil/grease.
  • Do not wear cloth work gloves that can be entangled in moving parts.

Battery Tool Use and Care

  • Recharge only with the specified charger. Using a charger for one battery type with another may create a fire risk.
  • Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs.
  • Keep battery packs away from metal objects (paper clips, coins, keys) when not in use to prevent shorting, which can cause burns or fire.
  • Avoid contact with ejected battery liquid; flush with water if contact occurs. Seek medical help if it contacts eyes.
  • Do not use damaged or modified battery packs or tools.
  • Do not expose battery packs or tools to fire or excessive temperatures (above 130°C) as this may cause explosion.
  • Follow all charging instructions and charge within the specified temperature range to avoid battery damage and fire risk.

Service

  • Have power tools serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts.
  • Never service damaged battery packs; only manufacturers or authorized providers should service them.
  • Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

Battery Powered Backpack Blower Safety Instructions

Training

  • Read instructions carefully and familiarize yourself with controls and correct use.
  • Never allow children, persons with reduced capabilities, or those unfamiliar with instructions to use the blower. Local regulations may restrict operator age.
  • Never operate the blower when people, children, or pets are nearby.
  • The operator is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to others or their property.

Preparation

  • Always wear substantial footwear and long trousers.
  • Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry; keep hair away from air inlets.
  • Always wear protective goggles (complying with ANSI Z87.1, EN 166, or AS/NZS 1336). A face shield is legally required in Australia/New Zealand.

Employers must enforce the use of appropriate safety protective equipment.

  • Wearing a face mask is recommended to prevent dust irritation.
  • Always wear non-slip, protective footwear (closed-toed safety boots/shoes).

Operation

  • Switch off the blower and remove the battery cartridge before any work, clearing blockages, or if abnormal vibration occurs. Ensure all moving parts have stopped.
  • Operate only in daylight or good artificial light.
  • Do not overreach; maintain proper balance and footing.
  • Always ensure secure footing on slopes.
  • Walk, do not run.
  • Keep cooling air inlets clear of debris.
  • Never blow debris towards bystanders.
  • Operate on a firm surface in a recommended position.
  • Do not operate at high places.
  • Never point the nozzle at anyone nearby.
  • Never block suction inlet and/or blower outlet. Be careful in dusty areas.
  • Do not use nozzles other than Makita-provided ones.
  • Do not use the blower to inflate balls or rubber boats.
  • Do not operate near open windows.
  • Operate at reasonable hours to avoid disturbing others.
  • Using rakes and brooms to loosen debris before blowing is recommended.
  • It is recommended to use the long nozzle for closer ground work.
  • If the blower strikes foreign objects or makes unusual noise/vibration, switch it off immediately, remove the battery, and inspect for damage. Contact a Makita Authorized Service Center if damaged.
  • Do not insert fingers or other objects into suction inlet or blower outlet.
  • Prevent unintentional starting: Ensure the switch is OFF before inserting battery, picking up, or carrying.
  • Never blow dangerous materials (nails, glass fragments, blades).
  • Do not operate near flammable materials.
  • Avoid operating for extended periods in low temperatures.
  • Do not use during lightning risk.
  • Pay attention to footing on muddy ground, wet slopes, or slippery places.
  • Do not use in bad weather with limited visibility.
  • Do not submerge the machine in a puddle.
  • Do not leave unattended outdoors in the rain.
  • Do not use in snow.
  • Keep cord away from obstacles during operation.

Maintenance and Storage

  • Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight.
  • Replace worn or damaged parts with Makita parts.
  • Store the blower in a dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Before inspection, servicing, storage, or accessory change, switch off the blower, ensure all moving parts stop, and remove the battery cartridge. Cool down the blower before any work. Maintain with care and keep clean.
  • Always cool down the blower before storing.
  • Do not expose the blower to rain; store indoors.
  • When lifting, bend knees and be careful not to hurt your back.
  • When washing, prevent water from entering electrical mechanisms (battery, motor, terminals).
  • When storing, avoid direct sunlight and rain; store in a place that is not hot or humid.
  • When carrying, hold the machine firmly by the handle.
  • When carrying, be careful not to get the cord caught by obstacles.

Battery Tool Use and Care

  • After removing the battery, store it in a dry place.

Additional Safety Instructions

  • Do not use the machine in bad weather, especially during lightning risk.
  • Before use, check supply and extension cords for damage. Do not touch cords before disconnecting. Do not use if cord is damaged or worn.
  • Wear eye protection and ear protection.
  • Always wear non-slip, protective footwear. Do not operate barefoot or in open sandals.
  • Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair that could get drawn into air inlets. Tie back or cover long hair.
  • Keep bystanders away; thrown debris can increase injury risk.
  • Never point the blower nozzle at people, pets, or windows. Use caution near solid objects to prevent ricochet.
  • Do not blow burning or smoking materials (cigarettes, matches, hot ashes).
  • Do not touch the fan while in motion. Switch off, wait for it to stop, and unplug before accessing the fan.
  • When clearing jammed material or servicing, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is disconnected.
  • Incoming foreign substances may block air channels. Remove obstacles affecting blowing performance.
  • Always wear gloves during operation; avoid bare hands.
  • Wear no more than one set of harness at a time.
  • Ensure no other wearable interferes with harness release/removal.
  • Do not apply heavy load to the shoulder harness; it can be damaged.
  • Adjust air volume adequately to prevent losing balance. High blowing power requires careful control.

Important safety instructions for battery cartridge

  • Read all instructions and cautionary markings on the charger, battery, and product.
  • Do not disassemble or tamper with the battery cartridge; this may result in fire, excessive heat, or explosion.
  • If operating time becomes excessively shorter, stop immediately due to risk of overheating, burns, or explosion.
  • If electrolyte gets into eyes, rinse with clear water and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Do not short the battery cartridge: Do not touch terminals with conductive material; avoid storing with other metal objects; do not expose to water or rain. A battery short can cause overheating, burns, or breakdown.
  • Do not store or use the tool/battery cartridge where temperatures may reach or exceed 50°C (122°F).
  • Do not incinerate battery cartridges, even if severely damaged; they can explode.
  • Do not nail, cut, crush, throw, drop, or hit the battery cartridge against hard objects.
  • Do not use a damaged battery.
  • Lithium-ion batteries are subject to Dangerous Goods Legislation for transport. Observe special requirements for packaging and labeling. Consult an expert for hazardous material preparation.
  • Tape or mask off open contacts and pack the battery so it cannot move.
  • When disposing of the battery cartridge, remove it from the tool and dispose of it safely according to local regulations.
  • Use batteries only with specified Makita products. Non-compliant use may result in fire, excessive heat, explosion, or electrolyte leak.
  • If the tool is not used for a long period, remove the battery.
  • Battery cartridges may become hot during/after use; handle with care.
  • Do not touch the tool terminal immediately after use as it may be hot.
  • Do not allow chips, dust, or soil to enter battery terminals, holes, or grooves.
  • Unless the tool supports use near high-voltage lines, do not use the battery cartridge near them.
  • Keep batteries away from children.

CAUTION: Only use genuine Makita batteries. Non-genuine or altered batteries may burst, causing fires, injury, and damage, and will void the Makita warranty.

Tips for maintaining maximum battery life

  • Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged. Stop operation and charge when you notice less tool power.
  • Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge; overcharging shortens its service life.
  • Charge the battery cartridge at room temperature (10°C - 40°C / 50°F - 104°F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging.
  • When not using the battery cartridge, remove it from the tool or charger.
  • Charge the battery cartridge if not used for more than six months.

ASSEMBLY

CAUTION: Always ensure the machine is switched OFF and the battery cartridge is removed before performing any work.

Assembling blower pipes

NOTICE: Be careful not to twist the control handle cable when assembling blower pipes.

  1. Loosen a hose clamp screw. Place the clamp over one end of the flexible pipe. Attach the flexible pipe to the front pipe. Tighten the clamp screw. (See Fig.1: 1. Flexible pipe, 2. Hose clamp, 3. Front pipe, 4. Screw)
  2. Loosen another hose clamp screw. Place the clamp over the other end of the flexible pipe. Attach the blower pipes to the flexible pipe. Tighten the clamp screw. (See Fig.2: 1. Blower pipes, 2. Hose clamp, 3. Flexible pipe, 4. Screw)
  3. Clamp the control cable to the cable holder. (See Fig.3: 1. Cable holder, 2. Control cable)

Note: Adjust control cable tension comfortably with the cable holder according to your control handle position. Disengage the cable from the holder if necessary to release tension.

Installing blower nozzles

Attach one of the supplied blower nozzles to the middle pipe.

Align the arrow mark on a nozzle with those on the middle pipe. Slide the nozzle onto the front end of the middle pipe until the projection on the middle pipe engages with the cutout groove on the nozzle. (See Fig.4 & Fig.5: 1. Nozzles, 2. Middle pipe, 3. To remove the nozzle, turn it left or right to disengage the lock, then slide it off the middle pipe. (See Fig.6: 1. Nozzle, 2. Middle pipe)

Adjusting blower pipes lengths

Blower pipes can be extended to desired lengths. Loosen the lock ring by turning it as shown in the figure. Slide the middle pipe out to the desired length, then turn the lock ring counter-clockwise to lock it. (See Fig.7: 1. Lock ring, 2. Middle pipe, 3. Blower pipe)

Note: Fasten the lock ring firmly for a secure fit.

Adjusting belts and shoulder harness

CAUTION: When adjusting belts and harness, disconnect the machine from the portable power pack.

  1. Put on the machine. Adjust shoulder harness length so the waist belt is positioned at your waist. (See Fig.8: 1. Shoulder harness, 2. Waist belt)
  2. Lock the waist belt buckle.
  3. Adjust waist belt length to fit snugly around your waist. (See Fig.9 & Fig.10)
  4. Adjust shoulder harness length to fit the portable power pack unit tightly against your back.
  5. Lock the chest belt buckle and adjust its length. (See Fig.11 & Fig.12: 1. Portable power pack unit, 2. Chest belt, 3. Buckle, 4. Hook and loop fastener)
  6. Fold and fix the chest belt with the hook and loop fastener.
  7. Fold and fix the waist belt with the hook and loop fastener.
  8. Make folds in the loose end of the shoulder harness strap, lay it flat over the tensioned strap, and tie them together with the hook and loop fastener. (See Fig.13 & Fig.14: 1. Hook and loop fastener)

Adjusting control handle position

The control handle can be positioned for convenience and comfort. Release the clamp lever, move and turn the control handle along the blower pipe to your preferred position, then tighten the clamp lever. If the clamp becomes loose during use, retighten the clamp screw. (See Fig.15: 1. Control handle, 2. Blower pipe, 3. Clamp lever, 4. Clamp screw)

Installing pipe support belt

The pipe support belt reduces load on your hand during operation. Snap the hook on the shoulder harness to hang the blower pipes with the adjustable belts.

  1. Bind the strap belt around the blower pipe. Tie up the control cable for clamping on the blower pipe. (See Fig.16 & Fig.17: 1. Blower pipe, 2. Strap belt, 3. Control cable)
  2. Adjust the belt tension on the blower pipe. (See Fig.18: 1. Blower pipe, 2. Strap belt)
  3. Hang the snap hook on a hanger ring in the right shoulder harness. (See Fig.19: 1. Snap hook, 2. Hanger rings)

Do not hang the snap hook on the left shoulder harness; it may make it difficult to remove the machine in an emergency.

Adjust the lengths of the support belt as preferred. (See Fig.20)

Installing folding strap

Safely strap the blower pipes to the shoulder harness when the machine is not in use. Hang a suspender on the hook in the left shoulder harness. Wrap a strap belt around the blower pipe. Buckle the folding strap. Unbuckle the folding strap before operating the machine. (See Fig.21 & Fig.22: 1. Support belt, 2. Strap belt, 3. Hook in left shoulder harness, 4. Blower pipe)

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

CAUTION: Always ensure the machine is switched OFF and the battery cartridge is removed before adjusting or checking function.

Installing or removing portable power pack

CAUTION: Always switch off the machine before installing or removing the portable power pack.

CAUTION: Hold the machine and portable power pack firmly when installing/removing. Failure to do so may cause them to slip, resulting in damage or personal injury.

CAUTION: Ensure the portable power pack is securely installed. If not, it may fall out, causing injury.

CAUTION: Before operation, ensure the cord is safely attached to cord holders and the socket is securely connected.

  1. Pull the cord from the bottom of the portable power pack as shown. Secure the cord in the cord holders when pulling it out. (See Fig.23: 1. Cord, 2. Cord holders)
  2. Install the portable power pack to the machine as shown. (See Fig.24: 1. Portable power pack)
  3. CAUTION: Ensure the portable power pack is securely fixed. If the red indicator is visible, the lock is not complete. Be careful not to pinch fingers or thumbs between the pack and the machine.
  4. Attach the cord to the cord holders as shown. (See Fig.25 & Fig.26: 1. Red indicator, 2. Cord holders)
  5. Tie up the cord with the hook and loop band on the harness over the right shoulder. (See Fig.27: 1. Cord, 2. Hook and loop band)
  6. Bundle the loose cord and secure it with cord clips on the side poles of the base carrier. (See Fig.28: 1. Cord, 2. Cord clip, 3. Side pole)
  7. Align the arrow mark on the machine's plug with the socket's arrow mark on the portable power pack, and insert the plug fully. (See Fig.29: 1. Socket, 2. Plug, 3. Arrow marks)

NOTICE: Do not insert the plug forcibly. If it doesn't insert easily, it's not aligned correctly.

NOTICE: When disconnecting, hold the plug and socket, not the cords, to prevent damage.

To remove the portable power pack, reverse the installation procedure. CAUTION: Press the lock button while holding the handle firmly when removing.

Indicating the remaining battery capacity

Press the check button to indicate the remaining battery capacity. (See Fig.30 & Fig.31: 1. Handle, 2. Lock button, 1. Battery indicator, 2. Check button)

Battery indicator status:

Charge the battery.

Note: The indicator lamp is for reference; actual capacity may differ based on usage and temperature. The lamp does not light up during operation. It automatically turns off after a few seconds.

Machine/battery protection system

The machine has a system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend machine and battery life. The machine stops automatically under the following conditions:

  • Overload protection: If the battery draws abnormally high current, the machine stops, and the low speed indicator lamp blinks green. Turn off the machine, stop the overloading application, then restart. The lamp also blinks green if the machine is operated continuously for a long time; release the switch trigger, return the control lever, then pull the trigger again to restart.
  • Overheat protection: If the machine or battery overheats, it stops. The low speed indicator lamp lights up red (machine overheat) or blinks red (battery overheat). Let the machine/battery cool down before restarting.
  • Overdischarge protection: If battery capacity is low, the machine stops, and the low speed indicator lamp blinks red. Remove the battery and charge it or replace it.
  • Protections against other causes: The system protects against other damage. If the machine stops, try turning it off and on again, charging/replacing the battery, or letting it cool down. If the problem persists, contact a Makita Service Center.

Note: If blowing power decreases in boost mode as battery drains, recharge the battery. Boost mode becomes unavailable until recharged.

Note: When setting down the machine, unlock waist and chest belt buckles and set it down slowly.

Main power switch

WARNING: Always turn off the main power switch when not in use.

Press the main power switch to turn on; the speed indicator lights green. Press and hold to turn off. Speed can be changed in three levels by pressing the main power switch.

Note: The machine has an auto power-off function. The main power switch shuts off if the switch trigger is not pulled for a certain period after turning it on.

Note: If the main power switch is pressed when the control lever is not fully returned to OFF, or while pulling the switch trigger, the low speed indicator blinks green. Return the control lever fully or release the switch trigger, then press the main power switch.

Switch action

WARNING: Before installing the portable power pack, check that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to OFF.

To start, pull the switch trigger. Speed increases with trigger pressure. Release the trigger to stop.

Boost mode

Boost mode provides higher air volume than normal (cruise control) mode. Pull the switch trigger to the halfway position, then pull fully to engage boost mode. Release the trigger to exit.

Note: Boost mode duration is approximately 10 seconds. After this, it switches to cruise control. Boost mode is unavailable for 20 seconds afterward. It is also unavailable if the speed indicator blinks. Let the machine cool down to re-enter boost mode.

Note: Boost mode cannot be activated with PDC1200.

Note: In boost mode, the speed indicator lights up sequentially.

Cruise control function

Cruise control allows maintaining a constant speed without holding the trigger. Turn the control lever forward to increase speed, backward to decrease speed.

Electronic function

The machine features electronic functions for easy operation:

  • Constant speed control: Provides constant rotation speed regardless of load conditions.

Accidental re-start preventive function

If you turn on the machine while pulling the switch trigger, it will not start, and the low speed indicator blinks green. To start, release the switch trigger, return the control lever fully, then turn on the machine.

OPERATION

CAUTION: When putting on the machine, ensure shoulder harness is on both shoulders to prevent it from falling. Ensure it is placed on your back to prevent it from falling during operation.

CAUTION: Do not place the machine on the ground while running, as sand or dust may enter the suction inlet and cause malfunction or injury.

  1. Press the power button on the portable power pack; the main power lamp will light up. (See Fig.39: 1. Power button, 2. Main power lamp)
  2. Put on the shoulder harness and lock the waist belt and chest belt buckles.
  3. Press the main power switch to turn on the machine. The machine is ready. Press the main power switch to change speed mode. The machine runs when you pull the switch trigger. (See Fig.40: 1. Main power switch, 2. Speed indicator)

Hold the control handle firmly and move it slowly. When blowing around buildings, stones, or vehicles, direct the nozzle away from them. For corner operations, start from the corner and move outwards.

Note: Blowing power in boost mode decreases as battery drains. Boost mode becomes unavailable until the battery is recharged.

When setting down the machine, unlock waist and chest belt buckles and set it down slowly.

MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: Always ensure the machine is switched OFF and the battery cartridge is removed before performing inspection or maintenance.

For product safety and reliability, repairs and maintenance should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers using only Makita replacement parts.

Cleaning the machine

NOTICE: Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, etc., as this may cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.

Clean the machine by wiping off dust with a dry cloth or a cloth dipped in soapy water and wrung out.

Remove dust or dirt from the suction inlet. (See Fig.42 & Fig.43: 1. Buckles, 1. Suction inlet)

Storage

Before storing, pull the plug out of the socket and perform full maintenance. Store the machine out of reach of children, and protected from moisture, rain, or direct sunlight. You can buckle the folding strap to stand up the blower pipes. (See Fig.44: 1. Socket, 2. Plug, 3. Folding strap)

TROUBLESHOOTING

Before seeking repairs, conduct your own inspection. If a problem is not explained in this manual, do not dismantle the machine. Instead, contact Makita Authorized Service Centers and use Makita replacement parts.

State of abnormality Probable cause (malfunction) Remedy
Motor does not run. Battery is not installed.
Battery problem (under voltage)
Install the battery.
Recharge the battery. If recharging is not effective, replace battery.
Motor stops running after a little use. The drive system does not work correctly.
Battery's charge level is low.
Ask your local authorized service center for repair.
Recharge the battery. If recharging is not effective, replace battery.
The machine does not reach the maximum speed. Overheating.
Battery is installed improperly.
Battery power is dropping.
Stop using the machine to allow it to cool down.
Install the battery as described in this manual.
Recharge the battery. If recharging is not effective, replace battery.
Abnormal vibration: stop the machine immediately! The drive system does not work correctly. Ask your local authorized service center for repair.
Motor cannot stop: Remove the battery immediately! Electric or electronic malfunction. Remove the battery and ask your local authorized service center for repair.
