Installation and Wiring
Installation of mobile audio and video components requires mechanical and electrical expertise. This manual provides general instructions but does not detail specific vehicle installation methods. Consult an authorized dealer for professional installation if you lack the necessary knowledge.
Important Instructions and Precautions:
- Mount the EQ unit accessible from the driver's seat, using the provided mounting brackets.
- This unit requires additional mobile audio components for operation.
- Exercise caution when attaching components to a vehicle. Check clearances before drilling or installing screws.
- Wiring Precautions: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal of the vehicle's battery before making any connections to prevent short circuits.
- This unit is designed for vehicles with a negative ground, 12V battery system.
- Ensure a good chassis ground connection for minimal resistance and to avoid noise problems. Use the shortest possible wire and connect it securely to the car chassis and the source unit ground.
- Route RCA cables away from power cables and output speaker wires.
- If the source unit lacks a remote turn-on lead, the EQ can be powered by a switched accessory lead, typically found in the factory harness behind the radio, which turns on/off with the ignition key.
- Do not open the unit's case, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside. Contact your dealer or authorized service center for assistance.
Wiring Diagram:
A diagram illustrates the connection of the Source Unit and Auxiliary Source to the Nakamichi EQ-Z1825, including connections to the Battery, Front Amp/Rear Amp, and SUB Amp. It shows connections for Remote Turn-on, Battery+, GND, Front Out, Main In, Sub Out, Rear Out, and Aux In. It also indicates Hi level SPK Input (Optional) and Hi input Auto power.
Troubleshooting
The Unit Does Not Work; No Lights:
- Check power and ground wiring connections.
Sound is Distorted:
- Reduce the source unit volume if it is set too high.
- Turn the equalizer controls to the center position. If distortion persists, consult your authorized dealer.
- Speakers may be damaged; consult your authorized dealer.
No Sound Coming From the Unit:
- Ensure the correct input is selected. Press the AUX switch to turn on the main inputs if necessary.
- Verify the remote-on signal. Use a voltmeter to check for +12V from the remote-on source.
Operations
Setting System Volume:
- Set master volume and subwoofer level controls to minimum.
- Turn on the source unit and increase volume until distortion is heard.
- Reduce volume to just below the distortion point (approx. 80% of full volume). This is the maximum usable signal.
- Once set, do not change the source unit volume. Use the EQ's volume control as the master volume. The EQ offers superior electronics and a better signal-to-noise ratio.
Adjusting the Controls:
- The EQ provides graphic adjustment bands for seven frequency ranges: sub, bass, mid bass, mid, mid high, high, and super high. Adjust center frequencies to fine-tune the acoustic response.
- Start with all frequency controls set to the center position (12 o'clock).
- Play music and adjust individual controls to your preference, avoiding extreme settings that can cause distortion.
- Adjust equalizer gain controls to taste.
- For systems with a subwoofer, slowly increase the subwoofer level until solid bass is achieved.
- For systems with rear speakers, adjust the fader control to balance front and rear sound.
Setting the Low-Pass Frequency:
Set the low-pass frequency switch to 60Hz or 90Hz based on subwoofer and amplifier requirements.
Connecting an MP3 Player or Video Unit:
- Connect the MP3 player or video unit to the auxiliary RCA input on the back of the EQ.
- Ensure the auxiliary button on the front is out for input from the main RCA input.
- Set the EQ master volume to a normal listening level.
- Press play on the auxiliary source.
- Push in the AUX button to switch to the auxiliary source.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to adjust the AUX gain controls on top of the unit so the auxiliary source volume matches the main source volume.
Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning the cabinet: Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use benzene, thinner, car cleaner, or other harsh cleaners, as they can damage the unit or cause paint to peel.
- Servicing the equalizer/crossover: Never open the case or disassemble the unit. Internal parts are not user-serviceable. Opening any components will void the warranty.
