Propane Conversion Instructions
These instructions detail the process for converting GE gas ranges (models GGF400, GGF500, GGF600, GGS500, GGS600) from natural gas to propane (LP) gas. This conversion involves adjusting the pressure regulator and burner orifices.
Safety Warnings
AWARNING: Explosion Hazard. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious injury. Service should only be performed by a qualified technician. Always disconnect power and shut off the gas supply before servicing. Ensure all grounding devices are reconnected and panels are replaced before operation.
Do not operate the cooktop or oven burners with propane gas before conversion. Doing so could cause high flames and toxic fumes, leading to serious injury.
No utilice la superficie de cocción ni los quemadores del horno con gas propano antes de la conversión. Hacerlo podría causar llamas altas y humos tóxicos, lo que podría provocar lesiones graves.
Tools Required
- Adjustable wrench
- Socket wrench with 1/2" socket and extension
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Torx driver: T20 (Some models only)
- Flat bladed screwdriver (blade approximately 3/32" across)
- Nut drivers: 1/4" and 9/32" or 7mm
- Masking tape
Converting the Pressure Regulator
The pressure regulator is located in the lower, left-hand corner at the back of the unit.
Regulator Type A
- Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the hex-nut cap from the pressure regulator.
- Completely remove the protective plastic cap off the threaded metal cap.
- Turn the plastic cap over and hook it into the slots. Rotate the cap 1/4 turn to reassemble. The type of gas to be used (NAT or PROP) should now be visible on the top of the cap.
- Screw the hex-nut cap back onto the pressure regulator.
Regulator Type B
- Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the hex-nut cap from the pressure regulator.
- Turn the plastic cap 1/4 turn to disassemble.
- Turn the metal cap over and reinstall on the regulator so the hollow end faces outward. Ensure the plastic washer from the cap is between the regulator and the cap, and the LP label is pointing toward the regulator.
- Screw the hex-nut cap back into the regulator. Do not overtighten.
Converting the Cooktop Burners
The propane (LP) orifices for the cooktop and oven burners are shipped in the literature package.
- Remove the top grates, burner caps, and burner heads.
- Use a 7mm or 9/32" nut driver to remove the top burner orifices by rotating counterclockwise. Applying masking tape to the end of the nut driver can help hold the orifice. These orifices are accessed through the burner opening in the cooktop.
- Remove the propane orifices from the kit provided (they have an "L" on top).
- Using a 7mm or 9/32" nut driver, install the propane (LP) orifices in their precise locations. Refer to the burner output ratings chart for orifice sizes and markings.
- Reassemble the cooktop burners, ensuring they sit level and the caps are flat. Ensure burner cap pins are not in the stability chamber.
NOTICE: Save the original orifices for future conversion back to natural gas. Store them with the propane orifices and these instructions.
Converting the Oven Burners
NOTICE: Oven orifices must be replaced for propane conversion; they cannot be adjusted.
Bake Burner Orifice
- Remove oven racks, door, and oven bottom. Some models may have a T20 screw securing the oven bottom.
- Locate the bake burner orifice behind the burner, accessed via the gas valve. Remove the glowbar shield, flame spreader, and bake burner by removing three 1/4" hex screws.
- Lift the burner off the orifice. Use a 1½" socket on an extension to loosen and remove the orifice by turning counter-clockwise.
- Select the propane bake orifice from the kit and install it on the gas valve. Tighten until snug. Replace the bake burner and secure with screws.
Broil Burner Orifice
- Remove the 1/4" hex screw securing the broil burner and allow it to hang free of the broil orifice.
- Use a 1/2" wrench to loosen and remove the orifice by turning counter-clockwise.
- Select the propane broil orifice from the kit and install it on the broil elbow. Tighten until snug.
- Replace the broil burner over the orifice and secure with the screw.
NOTICE: Save these orifices for future conversion back to natural gas.
Check Oven Burners
The air shutter settings are provided for reference. Adjustments are typically only needed if unusual flame observations occur.
BURNER | AIR SHUTTER SETTING FOR PROPANE | AIR SHUTTER SETTING FOR NG |
---|---|---|
Bake | 0.350" | 0.350" |
Broil | 0.250" | 0.250" |
Observe oven burner flames with the oven bottom and flame spreader removed, and the door closed.
- Check flames through the oven door window:
- If flames are yellow for Natural Gas, open the air shutter more.
- If flames blow away or flutter, close the air shutter slightly.
- Turn off the bake burner. Repeat checks with the broil burner.
- Check flame size: It should be approximately 1/2" to 3/4" long for bake and broil burners. The inner cone of the flame should be soft blue for natural gas and may have yellow tipping for propane gas.
AWARNING: Use caution if attempting to measure the inner cone of the flame, as burns could result.
AADVERTENCIA: Si intenta medir el cono interno de la llama, por favor tenga cuidado: se podrán producir quemaduras.
After all adjustments are satisfactory:
- Retighten air shutter screws.
- Ensure the burner is screwed down and the glow bar position has not moved.
- Replace the glowbar shield and flame spreader.
- Replace the oven bottom.
NOTICE: After conversion, fill out and apply the provided propane sticker near the regulator to alert others. If converting back to natural gas, remove the sticker.
Adjusting Low Flame Setting on Cooktop Burners
Low flame settings are set for Natural Gas and must be adjusted for Propane (LP) gas. Perform these adjustments with other burners operating on a medium setting to prevent the low flame from extinguishing.
- Turn on all surface burners to a medium setting.
- Turn the knob on the burner being adjusted to "LO".
- Remove the knob. Insert a small, flat blade screwdriver into the valve shaft. Turn clockwise as far as possible while maintaining a stable flame. Repeat for all valves.
- If the flame appears too low or unstable, slowly turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise until a stable flame exists for each burner.
- For each burner, quickly open and close the oven door while observing the flame. If the flame extinguishes, turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise for a larger flame. Repeat door openings until the flame is stable.

Flame Quality Check
Quality of Flames: Normal burner flames should appear as soft blue flames (A) for natural gas or with yellow tips on outer cones (B) for propane gas. Long, bright yellow flames are abnormal.
Check Oven Burners: Observe flames through the oven door window. Adjust air shutters if flames are yellow (open shutter more) or blow away/flutter (close shutter slightly). Flame size should be 1/2" to 3/4" long.
NOTICE: Foreign particles in the gas line may cause an orange flame initially, but this should disappear.
