Propane Conversion Instructions

These instructions detail the process for converting GE gas ranges from natural gas to propane (LP) gas. This conversion involves adjusting the pressure regulator and burner orifices. Failure to follow these instructions can lead to explosion hazards, death, or serious injury.

Safety Precautions

WARNING: Explosion Hazard

ADVERTENCIA: Riesgo de Explosión

The pressure regulator and burner orifices are factory set for natural gas. Conversion to propane gas requires changing both the regulator and the burner orifices. If converting back to natural gas, follow these instructions and use the provided NG orifice table.

WARNING: Do not operate the cooktop or oven burners with propane gas before completing the conversion. Doing so could cause high flames and toxic fumes, resulting in serious injury.

NOTICE: Save the propane (LP) kit with orifices and instructions for future conversions.

Tools Required

Converting the Pressure Regulator

The pressure regulator is located on the back of the unit in the lower, left-hand corner.

Regulator Type A

  1. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the hex-nut cap from the pressure regulator.
  2. Completely remove the protective plastic cap off the threaded metal cap.
  3. Turn the metal cap over and reinstall on the regulator so the hollow end faces outward. Ensure the plastic washer from the cap is between the regulator and cap, and the LP label is pointing toward the regulator.
  4. Screw the hex-nut cap back onto the regulator. Do not overtighten.

Regulator Type B

  1. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the hex-nut cap from the pressure regulator.
  2. Turn the plastic cap 1/4 turn to disassemble.
  3. Turn the plastic cap over and hook it into the slots. Rotate the cap 1/4 turn to reassemble. The type of gas (LP) should now be visible on the top of the cap.
  4. Screw the hex-nut cap back onto the pressure regulator.

Converting the Cooktop Burners

  1. Remove the top grates, burner caps, and burner heads.
  2. Use a 7mm or 9/32" nut driver to remove the top burner orifices by rotating counterclockwise. Masking tape on the end of the nut driver can help hold the orifice. These orifices are accessed through the burner opening.
  3. Remove the propane orifices from the kit. Propane orifices have an "L" on top.
  4. Using a 7mm or 9/32" nut driver, install the propane (LP) orifices in their precise locations.
  5. Reassemble the cooktop burners, ensuring burner caps sit level and flat. Ensure burner cap pins are not in the stability chamber.
  6. Place the old orifices into the kit bag with these instructions for future conversion back to natural gas.

NOTICE: Save these orifices for future conversion back to natural gas.

To prevent leakage, ensure orifice spuds are securely screwed into the gas supply tubes.

Converting the Oven Burners

NOTICE: Oven orifices must be replaced for propane conversion; adjustment is not sufficient.

NOTICE: Take special care not to damage the glow bar when removing the burner.

Bake Burner Orifice

  1. Remove oven racks, door, and oven bottom. Some models may have a T20 screw securing the oven bottom.
  2. The bake burner orifice is on the gas valve at the back of the cavity. Remove the glowbar shield, flame spreader, and bake burner by removing three 1/4" hex screws.
  3. Lift the burner off the orifice. Use a 1/2" socket on an extension to loosen and remove the orifice from the gas valve.
  4. Select the propane bake orifice from the kit and install it on the gas valve. Tighten until snug. Replace the bake burner and secure with screws.

Broil Burner Orifice (On models equipped with a gas broil burner)

  1. Remove the 1/4" hex screw securing the broil burner and allow it to hang free of the broil orifice.
  2. Use a 1/2" wrench to loosen and remove the orifice from the broil elbow.
  3. Select the propane broil orifice from the kit and install it on the broil elbow. Tighten until snug.
  4. Replace the broil burner over the orifice and replace the securing screw.

Check Oven Burners

Air shutter adjustments may be necessary for optimal flame characteristics. Refer to the table below.

BURNERAIR SHUTTER SETTING FOR PROPANEAIR SHUTTER SETTING FOR NG
Bake0.350"0.350"
Broil0.250"0.250"

Observe oven burner flames with the oven bottom and flame spreader removed, and the door closed.

  1. Check the following through the oven door window:
    • If flames are yellow, open the air shutter more.
    • If flames blow away or flutter from the burner, close the air shutter slightly.
  2. Turn bake burner off. Repeat with broil burner (on some models).
  3. Check flame size: It should be approximately 1/2" to 3/4" long for bake and broil burners.
  4. When adjustments are satisfactory:
    • Retighten air shutter screws.
    • Ensure burner is screwed down and glow bar position is unchanged.
    • Replace glowbar shield and flame spreader.
    • Replace oven bottom.

WARNING: Use caution when measuring the inner cone of the flame, as burns could result.

ADVERTENCIA: Si intenta medir el cono interno de la llama, por favor tenga cuidado: se podrán producir quemaduras.

NOTICE: Once conversion is complete, fill out the propane sticker and apply it near the regulator to indicate the appliance has been converted to propane. If converting back to natural gas, remove the sticker.

Check Surface Burners

Push and turn a knob to the LITE position. Sparks should appear at all burners, but gas flows only from the selected one. The burner should light within 4 seconds after air is purged from the supply line. Rotate the knob out of the LITE position after the burner lights. Check each burner.

Quality of Flames

Normal burner flames should appear as:

Long, bright yellow flames are not normal. Orange tint or flickering orange may occur initially due to gas particles or air.

Adjusting Low Flame Setting on Cooktop Burners

Low flame settings are factory set for Natural Gas and must be adjusted for Propane (LP) per the following instructions:

  1. Turn on all surface burners to a medium setting.
  2. Turn the knob for the burner being adjusted to "LO".
  3. Remove the knob. Insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver into the valve shaft. Turn clockwise as far as possible while maintaining a stable flame. Repeat for all valves.
  4. If the flame appears too low or unstable, slowly turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise until a stable flame exists.
  5. Additionally, for each burner, quickly open and close the oven door while observing the flame. If the flame is extinguished, turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise for a larger flame. Repeat door openings until the flame is stable.

NOTICE: Low setting adjustments must be made with other burners operating on a medium setting to prevent the low flame from being extinguished when other burners are turned on.

NOTE: If burner flames look like (A), further air shutter adjustment to the bake burner is required. Normal burner flames should look like (B) or (C), depending on the gas type. With propane gas, some yellow tipping on the outer cones is normal.

  • (A) Yellow flames: Further Adjustment Required
  • (B) Yellow tips on outer cones: Normal for Propane Gas
  • (C) Soft blue flames: Normal for Natural Gas

Foreign particles in the gas line may cause an orange flame initially, but this should disappear.
