MTP/MPO Cabling Introduction
The FS MTP/MPO assemblies include a wide range of MTP/MPO trunk cables, MTP/MPO harness cables, MTP loopbacks, and MTP adapters for high-density cabling in data centers. Our MTP/MPO trunk cables are available with 12, 24, 48 and 72 fibers, used to interconnect cassettes, panels, or ruggedized MTP fanouts to reduce network installation or reconfiguration time and cost. MTP/MPO harness cables are available in 8 or 12 fibers ribbon configuration with a single MTP/MPO connector on one end, used in parallel optics and cross-connect systems to increase cable density between switch and server cabinets. MTP/MPO loopback connectors adopt 8, 12, 24 fibers with different types of polarity to facilitate and speed up IL testing of optical network segments. It's used for testing the transmission capability and receiver sensitivity of fiber optic network equipment. MTP/MPO adapters have two types, including key-up to key-down and key-up to key-up, and are widely used in trunk cabling and cassettes.
Base-12 MTP Polarity Solution
For base-12 and base-24 structured cabling, FS offers the following polarity solutions:
FS Method A
Uses a single module type (Type A cassette) wired in a "straight-through" configuration and two different patch cords in an optical circuit. With FS Type A and Type AF cassette, the A-to-A patch cable is not needed. The recommended A-to-B patch cable can be used at both ends.
Diagram description: Connectivity Method A for 12-Fiber MTP/MPO Cassette showing Type-A Array Cable connecting to Type-A and Type-AF cassettes with A-to-B patch cords.
FS Method B
Inverts the numbered LC adapters on the cassettes. Type B1 cassette is standard, and Type B2 is re-designed with adapters numbered in a different sequence. A-to-B patch cables are still used at the beginning and end of the link.
Diagram description: Connectivity Method B for 12-Fiber MTP/MPO Cassette showing Type-B Array Cable connecting to Type-B1 and Type-B2 cassettes with A-to-B patch cords. Note: The Type-B cable is illustrated with a twist.
FS Method C
Employs key-up to key-down adapters to link a special key-up to key-down trunk cable to Method A cassettes. Polarity maintenance is achieved by using Type C MTP/MPO trunks with pair-wise flip built into individual fiber pairs, and the fiber channel is completed by utilizing A-to-B patch cables at both ends.
Diagram description: Connectivity Method C for 12-Fiber MTP/MPO Cassette showing Type C Array Cable connecting to Type-A cassettes with A-to-B patch cords.
Base-24 MTP Polarity Solution
To meet the demand for higher bandwidth and migration to 100G networks, 24-fiber MTP/MPO cable is introduced. It doubles the density of 12-fiber cabling, reducing fiber count, allowing for fewer cable pathways, and improving airflow. FS recommends the Type A (key-up to key-down) MTP/MPO trunk cable for base-24 MTP/MPO cabling. With Type A and Type AF cassette, the A-to-A patch cable is no longer needed.
