What is Verkada LPR?

Verkada's License Plate Recognition (LPR) solution offers intelligent software for continuous monitoring of license plates and efficient vehicle investigations. Leveraging Verkada's cutting-edge edge-based processing and computer vision technology, specialized cameras capture license plate images, providing users with a searchable database of license plate numbers. Each capture is linked to live or recorded video for comprehensive context surrounding vehicle events. Verkada's hybrid cloud approach ensures minimal bandwidth impact (less than 100 kbps), with all data encrypted in transit and at rest.

No additional software licenses or hardware are required to utilize the LPR functionality.

Solution Components

The Verkada LPR solution utilizes a dual-camera system powered by Verkada's Bullet Series cameras:

  • LPR Camera: A dedicated Telephoto Bullet Camera (CB51-TE or CB61-TE) optimized for capturing close-up license plate images.
  • Context Camera: A Wide Angle Bullet Camera (CB51-E or CB61-E) that records the entire vehicle and surrounding context.

Note: The LPR Camera, when in LPR mode, is optimized for license plate capture and disables broader surveillance features like People & Vehicle Analytics. The Context Camera should be used for general surveillance.

Platform Integration

Access and manage your LPR cameras through Verkada's web-based platform, Command. This platform provides real-time and historical footage of vehicles, allowing for easy searching and analysis of license plate data.

Installation and Setup Guidelines

For optimal performance, follow these installation guidelines:

  • Position LPR cameras to monitor a single lane of traffic.
  • Ensure license plates are within 60 feet (18 meters) of the LPR camera.
  • Mount cameras with a horizontal angle of no more than 20° and a vertical angle of no more than 40° relative to the license plates.
  • When enabling LPR mode, the camera may undergo a firmware update lasting up to five minutes.
  • During setup, define a 'License Plate Zone' within the camera's frame, covering less than 25% of the view.
  • Utilize the focus and zoom features to ensure license plates are clear and occupy a significant portion of the frame.
  • Associate a Context Camera with your LPR camera for complete event context.

  • License Plate of Interest Alerts: Receive real-time notifications for specific license plates across multiple locations, with options for integration via the Verkada Webhooks API.

  • Parking Garages & Lots: Quickly investigate vehicles by searching historical license plate data.
  • Drive-Throughs: Track vehicle counts and gather business intelligence data.
