Omron Digital Thermometer MC-246 User Manual
Model: MC-246
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Omron Digital Thermometer MC-246. This thermometer provides safe, accurate, and quick temperature readings via oral, rectal, or underarm methods, eliminating concerns about broken glass or mercury hazards. Note that factors like smoking, eating, or drinking can affect temperature readings. Read this manual thoroughly before use and practice taking temperatures to gain confidence. Consult a doctor for any questions regarding specific temperature readings.
Important Safety Notes
⚠️ WARNING:
- High or prolonged fever requires medical attention, especially for young children. Contact your doctor.
- Read and follow instructions carefully for accurate readings. Temperature is affected by physical exertion, hot/cold beverages, and measuring technique.
- Remain still during measurement.
- Self-diagnosis based on temperature readings is dangerous. Consult your doctor for interpretation.
- This thermometer is for oral, rectal, or underarm use only. Do not use at other sites like the ear, as it may cause false readings or injury.
- Keep out of reach of children. Do not allow children to take temperatures unattended, as they may injure themselves.
- Keep batteries, battery covers, and probe covers away from children, as they may swallow them. Contact a doctor immediately if swallowed.
- Do not attempt measurements when the thermometer is wet; this may result in inaccurate readings.
⚠️ CAUTION:
- Do not bite the thermometer; this may lead to breakage or injury.
- Do not share the thermometer among individuals.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the thermometer; this may result in inaccurate readings.
- Do not incinerate batteries; they may burst.
- Pay attention to polarity (+/-) when replacing batteries to prevent leakage, heat generation, or bursting.
- Remove batteries if the thermometer will not be used for 3 months or more to prevent leakage or damage.
- Do not use mobile phones near the thermometer.
- Avoid using the thermometer in areas with strong static electricity or electromagnetic fields, as this may cause inaccurate readings or instrument failure.
- Do not force the thermometer into the rectum. Stop insertion if pain occurs to prevent injury.
- Do not attempt rectal measurements on individuals with rectal disorders, as it may worsen the condition.
- Do not step on the unit or its case.
- Do not disinfect the sensing section by immersing in alcohol or hot water (over 50°C).
- Failure to use a probe cover may lead to bacterial and viral infection.
GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
- Use only for measuring human body temperatures.
- Do not drop or expose the thermometer and case to shock or vibration.
- Do not store a damp thermometer in its case; wipe it dry first.
- Avoid taking temperature within 30 minutes after exercise, bathing, or eating/drinking.
Switching Between Fahrenheit/Centigrade (°C/°F)
Press and hold the [Power/Mode] button for 7 seconds until a beep is heard. The display will switch to the other measurement scale.
Visual Description: The display shows all symbols, then after 2 seconds, the scale changes (°C to °F or °F to °C) with a beep. After 5 seconds, the thermometer automatically switches off.
Taking the Temperature
Use a probe cover for each measurement. Place it carefully over the tip.
- Press the [Power/Mode] button. The display shows a default temperature (e.g., 37.0°C / 98.6°F). If a different temperature is shown, refer to the Troubleshooting section.
- Apply the thermometer to the measurement site: oral, rectal, or underarm. Note: If the "L" indicator does not display (only temperature is shown), it is not an error; proceed with measurement.
- When the reading is ready, the thermometer emits three [beep-beep-beep] sounds. Remove the thermometer and read the result.
Buzzer Notification Timing:
- Oral: approx. 80 seconds
- Rectal: approx. 60 seconds
- Underarm: approx. 2 minutes
Notes: Buzzer timing is based on 23°C ambient temperature without a probe cover. Individual measurement results may vary.
Visual Description of Measurement Progress: The [°C (°F)] indicator symbol blinks when ready. It blinks during measurement. It stops blinking and stays lit when the reading is ready. The most recently measured temperature is displayed with an 'M' indicator.
- Turn off the thermometer and store it in the protective case. The reading is automatically stored. While the thermometer auto-shuts off after 30 minutes (or 3 minutes if unused), manual shut-off conserves battery.
Displaying the Last Temperature
Press the [Power/Mode] button to display the most recently measured temperature.
Correct Measurement Techniques
Accurate readings depend on correct measurement methods.
Oral Use (Ages 4 and older):
Keep mouth closed for 5 minutes before measurement. Place the thermometer under the tongue, resting near the root of the tongue. Use tongue pressure to hold it in place. Ensure the display faces upwards.
Rectal Use:
Always use a probe cover. Lubricate with a water-soluble gel (not petroleum jelly). Gently insert the probe tip no more than 1.3 cm into the rectum. Do not force insertion if resistance is met. Disinfect after use.
Underarm (Axillary) Use:
Place the probe tip in the center of the armpit. Turn the display inwards. Lock the probe tip under the arm, applying slight inward pressure with the arm. The thermometer should be angled 35-45 degrees relative to the arm. For infants, gently hold the arm to prevent movement.
Incorrect Measurements
Avoid taking temperatures immediately after exercise, bathing, eating, or drinking; wait at least 30 minutes. Take readings after waking up or waiting at least 30 minutes after moving around. For underarm measurements, ensure the armpit is dry; wipe off perspiration before measuring. Avoid taking temperatures after being under blankets for a long time.
Battery Replacement
Use one LR41 Alkaline-Manganese Button Battery.
Replace the battery when the battery replacement indicator [ ] appears upon switching on.
- Use a coin to unscrew the battery cover.
- Remove the old battery.
- Insert the new battery with the '+' pole facing upwards.
- Use a coin to replace the battery cover. Ensure the O-ring is in place for water resistance.
Notes: The included battery is for testing. Consult local authorities for battery disposal. Do not lose the O-ring.

Care and Maintenance
Keep the thermometer clean. Do not use strong water jets or immerse for long periods. Wipe with a soft, clean cloth. When using alcohol, avoid contact with the indicator section. For stubborn stains, use a damp cloth with water or neutral detergent, wring thoroughly, and finish with a dry cloth.
To prevent damage:
- Do not use benzene, thinner, gasoline, or strong solvents.
- Do not soak the sensing section in alcohol for extended periods or sterilize with hot water (over 50°C).
- Do not use ultrasonic washing.
Store the thermometer in its protective case. Avoid storing in wet locations, high heat/humidity, direct sunlight, near heating equipment, dusty areas, high salt air, or places subject to leaning, shock, vibration, or corrosive gases.
