Omron MC-343F Digital Thermometer: User Manual and Instructions

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of the Omron MC-343F Digital Thermometer.

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Omron Digital Thermometer MC-343F. This thermometer offers safe, accurate, and quick temperature readings via oral, rectal, or underarm methods, eliminating concerns about broken glass or mercury hazards. Note that temperature readings can be affected by smoking, eating, or drinking. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and practice taking temperatures to gain confidence.

Important Safety Notes

Warnings

  • High or prolonged fever requires medical attention, especially for young children. Consult a doctor.
  • Read and follow instructions carefully for accurate readings. Factors like physical exertion, hot/cold beverages, and measuring technique can affect results.
  • Remain still during measurement.
  • Self-diagnosis based on temperature readings is dangerous and may worsen existing conditions. Consult a doctor for interpretation.
  • This thermometer is for oral, rectal, or underarm use only. Do not use at other sites like the ear, as it may lead to false readings or injury.
  • Store out of reach of children. Do not allow children to take temperatures unattended.
  • Keep batteries, battery covers, and probe covers away from children, as they may be swallowed. Contact a doctor immediately if swallowed.
  • Do not attempt measurements when the thermometer is wet, as this may result in inaccurate readings.

Cautions

  • Do not bite the thermometer; it may break or cause injury.
  • Do not share the thermometer among individuals.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the thermometer; this may lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Do not incinerate batteries; they may burst.
  • Observe polarity ([+]/[-]) when replacing batteries. Incorrect polarity can cause leakage, heat, or bursting.
  • Remove the battery if the thermometer will not be used for 3 months or more to prevent leakage or damage.
  • Do not use mobile phones near the thermometer.
  • Avoid using the thermometer in areas with strong static electricity or electromagnetic fields, as this can cause inaccurate readings or instrument failure.
  • Do not force the thermometer into the rectum. Stop insertion if pain occurs.
  • Do not attempt rectal measurements on individuals with rectal disorders.
  • Do not step on the unit or its case.
  • Do not bend the probe tip more than 45 degrees.
  • Do not disinfect the sensing section by immersing in alcohol or hot water (over 50°C / 122°F).
  • Failure to use a probe cover can lead to bacterial and viral infections.

General Safety Precautions

  • Use only for measuring human body temperatures.
  • Do not drop the thermometer or expose it to shock or vibration.
  • Do not store the thermometer in its case if damp; wipe it dry first.
  • Avoid taking temperature for at least 30 minutes after exercise, bathing, or eating/drinking.

Switching Between Fahrenheit/Centigrade (Celsius)

Press and hold the [button] for 7 seconds until a beep is emitted. The display will change to the other measurement scale.

Taking the Temperature

Use a probe cover for each measurement. Place it carefully over the tip.

  1. Press the [button]. The default temperature 37.0°C (98.6°F) is displayed.
  2. Apply the thermometer to the measurement site: oral, rectal, or underarm.
  3. For oral and rectal measurement: When the reading is ready, the thermometer will emit a [beep-beep-beep] sound three times. Remove and read the result.
  4. For underarm measurement: Continue holding for 2-5 minutes to complete the measurement.
  5. Turn off the thermometer and store it in its protective case. The reading is automatically stored. The thermometer auto-switches off after 30 minutes of use or 3 minutes of inactivity, but manual shut-off conserves battery.

Buzzer Notification Timing: Oral: approx. 20 seconds, Rectal: approx. 10 seconds, Underarm: approx. 25 seconds. (Note: Underarm measurement may require 2-5 minutes for completion).

Display Indicators:

  • All symbols appear: When the button is pressed.
  • M indicator + last temperature: The most recently measured temperature is displayed.
  • [°C (°F)] blinking: Thermometer is ready for use.
  • [°C (°F)] blinking: Temperature measurement is in progress.
  • [°C (°F)] indicator stays lit: Reading is ready.

Correct Measurement Techniques

Oral Use (for ages 4 and older)

Keep mouth closed for 5 minutes before measurement. Place the thermometer under the tongue, to the left or right of the tongue root. Use tongue pressure to hold it in place and prevent sliding.

Underarm (Axillary) Use

Place the probe tip in the center of the armpit. Lock the tip under the arm with slight inward pressure. For infants, gently hold the arm. The thermometer should be at a 35-45 degree angle to the arm.

Rectal Use

Always use a probe cover. Lubricate with water-soluble gel. Gently insert the probe tip no more than 1.3 cm into the rectum. Do not force insertion if resistance is met. Disinfect after use.

Incorrect Measurements

  • Cause: Measuring immediately after exercise, bathing, eating, or drinking. Correction: Wait at least 30 minutes.
  • Cause: Measuring after moving around. Correction: Measure immediately after waking or wait 30 minutes after activity.
  • Cause (Underarm): Heavy underarm perspiration or being under blankets. Correction: Wipe underarm perspiration before measurement.

Battery Replacement

Battery: Alkaline-Manganese Button Battery LR41 (commercially available).

Replace the battery when the battery replacement indicator [ ] appears.

  1. Use a coin to remove the battery cover.
  2. Remove the old battery.
  3. Insert the new battery with the [+] pole facing up.
  4. Use a coin to replace the battery cover. Ensure the O-ring is in place for water resistance.

Displaying the Last Temperature

Press the [button] to display the most recently measured temperature.

Error Displays

IndicatorCauseRemedy
[ ] (Temperature sensing section below 32°C / 89.6°F)Temperature of sensing section is less than 32°C (89.6°F).This is not an error; ignore and take temperature.
