Important Safety Instructions

This section outlines critical safety information for the installation and use of the EnergyTrak system.

Safety Alert Symbols and Signal Words

Safety alert symbols identify hazards that could result in personal injury or system damage. Signal words (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION) indicate the likelihood and severity of injury. Hazard symbols represent the type of hazard.

DANGER: Indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING: Indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION: Indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE: Indicates information considered important but not hazard-related.

Warranty Statement

This manual provides abbreviated warranty guidelines. For complete details, refer to the Warranty and Installation Manual for EnergyTrak and connected Energy Solutions products (e.g., SimpliPHI™ Energy Storage System) available at www.briggsandstratton.com. Failure to adhere to manual requirements violates warranty terms.

Energy Solutions Product Compatibility

EnergyTrak is required for all SimpliPHI ESS installations. Supported configurations include:

Installations with only one (1) SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery or one (1) AmpliPHI 3.8 Battery are not supported.

Wiring diagrams and instructions for these configurations are in the "EnergyTrak Gateway Installation" and "Alternative Gateway Installations" sections.

Site Network and Internet Requirements

An internet connection is REQUIRED for using EnergyTrak with the SimpliPHI ESS.

General Network & Internet Requirements

The system owner is responsible for providing an internet connection to the EnergyTrak Gateway. Options include:

All network equipment (router, modem, switches) should be powered from the critical loads panel for continuous operation.

Hardwired Network Requirements (recommended)

WiFi Network Requirements

NOTICE: An unreliable WiFi network connection can disrupt timely firmware updates, potentially leading to critical system failures. Owners must maintain a reliable WiFi network for EnergyTrak connectivity.

Getting Started with EnergyTrak for Pros

Creating Your Company's First Pro User Account

To use the EnergyTrak app as a Pro, create your company's first Pro user account (Pro Admin). Account creation is controlled by Briggs & Stratton for security.

Request an account by completing the form at: www.briggsandstratton.com/na/en_us/products/energy/integrated-systems/energytrak-pro-account-setup.html.

You will receive a welcome email from notify@energytrak.io upon creation. Contact Briggs & Stratton Technical Support for assistance or status checks.

The Pro Admin account is used to create additional Pro Admin and Pro Technician users. Instructions for logging into the EnergyTrak app will be provided via email.

EnergyTrak Gateway Installation

WARNING: Connecting the EnergyTrak Gateway to the SimpliPHI ESS requires physical contact with the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter and SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery, which could result in shock or serious injury. Follow safety precautions in the respective installation manuals.

NOTE: Refer to "Alternative Gateways Installations" for instructions on other SimpliPHI Energy Storage System configurations.

The overall length of all Ethernet cables used across the entire battery bank CAN bus cannot exceed 100 meters, including cables between the Gateway and Battery, and battery to battery.

Gateway Enclosure Conduit Entry Points

Cabling entry points should be drilled into the flat surface plane on the top and/or upper sides of the gateway enclosure. Use visual diagrams for specific guidance. Drill the fewest possible entry points. Use appropriate conduit fittings to maintain the outdoor rating per local AHJ.

Wiring Install Instructions (Systems with One SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter + Two SimpliPHI 4.9 Batteries)

  1. Connect component A (Battery CAN Bus Ethernet Cable) between Battery 1 and Battery 2 RJ45 ports labeled BATTERY. (Note: This may be pre-completed during battery installation.)
  2. Connect component B (3-position connector) to the CAN port on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  3. Connect component K (Battery CAN Bus Ethernet Cable) from component B's RJ45 port to one of the two open RJ45 ports labeled BATTERY on the battery bank. Install an RJ45 terminator in the other BATTERY port.
  4. Connect component C to component F using the DB9 connectors.
  5. Connect component F to any of the four open USB ports on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  6. Connect component J (Inverter RS-232 Ethernet Cable) from component C to the RJ45 port labeled RS-232 on the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter.
  7. If disconnected, connect component D (Gateway Power Cable) 2-position connector to the POWER port on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  8. If disconnected, connect component D black wire to the -Vin port on the DC-DC power supply unit.
  9. If disconnected, connect component D red wire to the +Vin port on the DC-DC power supply unit.
  10. Connect component L (LAN Ethernet Cable) to the EnergyTrak Gateway Ethernet port and to an open port on the site's network switch or router for LAN and Internet connection. (Note: Verify the port provides Internet access. This step is optional if using WiFi.)
  11. Ensure component E (Fuse DC Jumper Cable) is securely installed between the fuse terminal block and the DC-DC power supply unit. (This wire was pre-installed.)
  12. Connect component G ring terminals onto the electrical wires (component I). Use one red and one black wire for DC circuit identification.
  13. Connect the red electrical wire assembly (using component G ring terminal) to the positive power terminal on the SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery and to the top terminal port on the 3A Fuse Terminal Block.
  14. Connect the black electrical wire assembly (using component G ring terminal) to the negative power terminal on the SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery and to the bottom terminal port on the 3A Fuse Terminal Block.
  15. Attach the provided ferrite core (component H) around both component I wires inside the gateway enclosure.

After installation, proceed with setup in the EnergyTrak app.

EnergyTrak for Pros

Installing the EnergyTrak App

Download the EnergyTrak app from the Android or Apple app store. Scan the QR code or navigate to www.energytrak.app/mobile. Alternatively, search "EnergyTrak" in your app store.

User Creation and Management

Users are managed via the Users screen in the EnergyTrak app. Account types include:

Pro Admins

Have the most permissions: create/manage users (Pro Admins, Technicians, System Owners), create/manage customer sites, add/remove sites for Technicians, setup new products, reconfigure products, view all customer sites, and receive notifications.

Pro Technicians

Streamlined features: create new sites, create new System Owner users (during commissioning), setup new products, view assigned customer sites, reconfigure installed products at assigned sites, and receive notifications from assigned customer sites.

System Owners

For end-users: view site/product details, control installed products, change WiFi network settings, and receive notifications from registered sites.

Site Fleet Tracking

Pro users can monitor customer site status via the Sites screen in the EnergyTrak app. Site statuses include:

The Sites screen is also used to create new Sites for new installations.

Site Dashboard and Configuration

Site Dashboard

The Site Dashboard provides a summarized view of connected products, system configurations, and the EnergyTrak Gateway. Pro users can view details and remotely edit configurations. System Owner users have limited editing capabilities, primarily for network settings and time-of-use (TOU) adjustments.

Health Status Screen

Clicking the health status badge provides more information. For WARNING or CRITICAL statuses, the app displays specific warnings or faults detected from connected devices.

Change Configuration

This feature allows adjustment of settings for an EnergyTrak Site, Gateway, or SimpliPHI ESS. Access is via the "Change Configuration" button on the Site Dashboard.

SimpliPHI ESS Commissioning with EnergyTrak

Before You Start

Gather necessary preparations and information before commissioning the SimpliPHI ESS via the EnergyTrak app.

SimpliPHI ESS Install

Ensure the SimpliPHI ESS is installed according to the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter Installation Manual and SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery Installation Manual.

Gateway Install

Ensure the EnergyTrak Gateway is installed as per the "EnergyTrak Gateway Installation" section.

WiFi Info (optional)

If using WiFi for the gateway's internet connection, confirm network credentials (SSID and password).

WARNING: An unreliable wireless network connection can disrupt timely firmware updates, potentially leading to critical system failures. Briggs & Stratton does not recommend using a wireless connection.

Gateway Proximity

Ensure you are within Bluetooth range (10 feet) of the EnergyTrak Gateway.

Grid Profile

Confirm the appropriate "Grid Profile" for the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter based on installation (e.g., IEEE 1547 Default, Off-Grid).

Operating Profile

Confirm the appropriate "Operating Profile" for the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter. See the "Choose Operating Profile" section for details.

Site Info

The SimpliPHI ESS is registered to a Site within EnergyTrak. To create a new site, you need: Site name, Street address, City, State, and Zip code. A new site can be created anytime before commissioning.

System Owner Info

Optionally create a System Owner user account to simplify the owner's use of EnergyTrak and the SimpliPHI ESS. Provide the owner's full name, email address, and phone number.

Mobile Device Battery Level

Ensure the mobile device used for commissioning has at least 50% battery level.

SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery Charge Level

Ensure the connected battery (or batteries) have at least a 30% charge level (SoC) before beginning.

Commissioning Steps

Create a New Site

Navigate to the Sites list and press the CREATE NEW SITE button. A Site represents the physical installation location.

Start Commissioning

Once the site is created, open it in the EnergyTrak app and click the START COMMISSIONING button.

Establish Power to the Inverter

Establish power to the inverter and turn on batteries (if applicable). Refer to the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter Installation Manual and SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery Installation Manual for detailed walkthroughs. This step can be skipped by selecting SKIP THE INSTRUCTION.

Connect to Gateway over Bluetooth

Select the appropriate Bluetooth network for the EnergyTrak Gateway from the list and press CONTINUE. Allow Bluetooth and location services if prompted. EnergyTrak uses Bluetooth for communication between the Gateway and the mobile device. The list shows available Gateways in range, identified by their ID#.

Resolving Bluetooth Issues

If you encounter issues connecting via Bluetooth:

  1. Force close the EnergyTrak app on your mobile device.
  2. Use the mobile device's Bluetooth menu to "forget" all previously paired EnergyTrak Gateways.
  3. Reboot the EnergyTrak Gateway by power cycling it (open fuse holder door or disconnect power cable, wait 15 seconds, then reconnect power). Note: It may take up to two minutes for the gateway to transmit its Bluetooth network after power cycling.
  4. Reopen the EnergyTrak app and restart the commissioning process.

If problems persist, uninstall and reinstall the EnergyTrak app.

Equipment Details

Ensure the correct inverter and battery quantities are detected. The EnergyTrak Gateway automatically searches for and detects compatible equipment that is powered ON and properly connected. The Equipment Details screen shows detected SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter(s) and SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery (or Batteries).

Update Firmware

If connected equipment (inverter, battery, gateway) software is up-to-date, press CONTINUE. If updates are needed, the EnergyTrak app will guide you through the process. Follow on-screen instructions to apply updates and continue commissioning.

Connect Gateway to the Internet

This step can be skipped if the Gateway is already connected via a hardwired Ethernet cable. A WiFi connection can be set up as a redundant connection.

WARNING: An unreliable wireless network connection can disrupt timely firmware updates, potentially leading to critical system failures. Briggs & Stratton does not recommend using a wireless connection.

If using WiFi as the primary internet connection (NOT RECOMMENDED), this step must not be skipped. To set up WiFi: select the network, press CONNECT, enter the password, and press JOIN.

EnergyTrak requires an Internet connection to operate. This relies on the site's local network and Internet connection, which the system owner must provide and maintain. Refer to "Site Network and Internet Requirements" for specifics.

Choose Grid Profile

Select the appropriate Grid Profile for the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter to ensure compliance and interoperability with the site's electric utility. Press CONTINUE after selection.

Choose Operating Profile

Select the appropriate Operating Profile, which acts as an "easy button" for system setup. Each profile has pre-defined settings for the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter, which can be customized. Press CHOOSE PROFILE.

If the Grid-Tied Backup profile is selected, you may optionally define time-of-use settings.

If the Off-Grid Grid Profile was selected, the system defaults to the Off-Grid Operating Profile, and this step is skipped.

Summary and Edit Configuration

Review the settings on the Summary screen to verify they are correct for the inverter. Press DONE to continue with the EnergyTrak setup. The summary shows a high-level view of applied settings. Use the EDIT button for configuration options.

Only a subset of SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter configuration parameters are available in EnergyTrak. Use the inverter's front panel for settings not available in EnergyTrak. Refer to the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter Installation Manual for more information.

Confirm and Set Maximum Charge Current

The default maximum charge current is 37.5A. When installing multiple batteries, verify the quantity and update the maximum charge current value based on the table below.

Add System Owner

Enter the required information for the System Owner and press ADD. This creates a new EnergyTrak System Owner user account. If the email address is not associated with an existing account, an invitation email will be sent. Confirm the customer received the email. If the email is already associated, skip this step and add the owner from the Site Dashboard after commissioning. Adding a system owner is optional but recommended for the owner to associate the SimpliPHI ESS with their EnergyTrak account.

Setup Confirmation

Setup is complete. The EnergyTrak Gateway should be connected to the Internet, and the SimpliPHI ESS should be working as configured. The site should be viewable in the EnergyTrak app with a HEALTHY status. The Site Dashboard and Change Configuration features allow validation of system operation.

Troubleshooting

If the SimpliPHI ESS produces faults or is not operating as intended, troubleshoot using self-help resources or contact Briggs & Stratton Technical Support. The Help screen in the EnergyTrak app provides links to resources and contact information.

Alternative Gateway Installations

This section illustrates the installation of the EnergyTrak Gateway for systems with two or more SimpliPHI 6kW Inverters OR three or more SimpliPHI 4.9 Batteries. It is not limited to systems with exactly two inverters and three batteries. Refer to following pages for details on variations up to maximum supported quantities.

Wiring Install Instructions (Systems with Two or More SimpliPHI 6kW Inverters + Three or More SimpliPHI 4.9 Batteries)

  1. Connect component A (Battery CAN Bus Ethernet Cable) between Battery 1 and Battery 2 RJ45 ports labeled BATTERY. For additional batteries, repeat this "daisy chain" process. (Note: This may be pre-completed during battery installation.)
  2. Connect component B (3-position connector) to the CAN port on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  3. Connect component K (Battery CAN Bus Ethernet Cable) from component B's RJ45 port to one of the two open RJ45 ports labeled BATTERY on the battery bank. Install an RJ45 terminator in the other BATTERY port.
  4. Connect component C to component F using the DB9 connectors.
  5. Connect component F to any of the four open USB ports on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  6. Connect component J (Inverter RS-232 Ethernet Cable) from component C to the RJ45 port labeled RS-232 on the SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each inverter. A set of components C and F are shipped with each SimpliPHI 6kW Inverter. Installers need to provide an additional component J cable for each inverter.
  8. If disconnected, connect component D (Gateway Power Cable) 2-position connector to the POWER port on the EnergyTrak Gateway.
  9. If disconnected, connect component D black wire to the -Vin port on the DC-DC power supply unit.
  10. If disconnected, connect component D red wire to the +Vin port on the DC-DC power supply unit.
  11. Connect component L (LAN Ethernet Cable) to the EnergyTrak Gateway Ethernet port and to an open port on the site's network switch or router for LAN and Internet connection. (Note: Verify the port provides Internet access. This step is optional if using WiFi.)
  12. Ensure component E (Fuse DC Jumper Cable) is securely installed between the fuse terminal block and the DC-DC power supply unit. (This wire was pre-installed.)
  13. Connect component G ring terminals onto the electrical wires (component I). Use one red and one black wire for DC circuit identification.
  14. Connect the red electrical wire assembly (using component G ring terminal) to the positive power terminal on the SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery and to the top terminal port on the 3A Fuse Terminal Block.
  15. Connect the black electrical wire assembly (using component G ring terminal) to the negative power terminal on the SimpliPHI 4.9 Battery and to the bottom terminal port on the 3A Fuse Terminal Block.
  16. Attach the provided ferrite core (component H) around both component I wires inside the gateway enclosure.

After installation, proceed with setup in the EnergyTrak app. The same setup process applies regardless of inverter and battery quantities.

EnergyTrak Gateway Installation without Batteries

For systems without batteries (e.g., Grid-Tied Solar), an alternate power source is needed for the gateway, as the inverter does not supply power from the battery port. An AC-DC power supply plugged into a grid-fed outlet (18-75 VDC input) is an example. Adapt installation based on the situation.

For all other connections and steps, follow instructions matching the specific application.
