Keep this manual for the safety warnings and precautions, assembly, operating, inspection, maintenance and cleaning procedures. Write the product's serial number in the back of the manual near the assembly diagram (or month and year of purchase if product has no number). Keep this manual and the receipt in a safe and dry place for future reference.

NOTICE

Clean the Spray Gun Body and Cup IMMEDIATELY after EVERY use and when it will be idle for more than 30 minutes. Delayed or inadequate cleaning will permanently clog the Spray Gun. Water-based paint hardens quickly and permanently inside Spray Gun.

Important Safety Instructions

Personal Safety

  1. Stay alert. Watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating the tool. Do not use the tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating the tool increases the risk of injury to persons.
  2. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair increases the risk of injury to persons as a result of being caught in moving parts.
  3. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations.
  4. Use safety equipment. Wear protective paint spraying gloves and a NIOSH-approved respirator during use. Non-skid safety shoes and a hard hat must be used for the applicable conditions.
  5. Always wear eye protection. Wear ANSI-approved safety goggles.

Tool Use and Care

  1. Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for the application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which the tool is designed.
  2. Unplug the tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool unintentionally. Turn off and detach the air supply, safely discharge any residual air pressure, and release the throttle and/or turn the switch to its off position before leaving the work area.
  3. Store the tool when it is idle out of reach of children and other untrained persons. A tool is dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  4. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that affects the tool's operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. There is a risk of bursting if the tool is damaged.
  5. Use only accessories that are identified by the manufacturer for the specific tool model. Use of an accessory not intended for use with the specific tool model, increases the risk of injury to persons.

Service

  1. Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel.
  2. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Use only authorized parts.
  3. Use only lubricants supplied with the tool or specified by the manufacturer.

Specific Safety Instructions

  1. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not expose to rain. Store indoors.
  2. Risk of Explosion - Do not spray flammable liquids.
  3. Do not direct spray at people or animals.
  4. Read all of the information concerning coating products and cleaning solvents. Do not use chlorinated solvents (e.g. 1-1-1 trichloroethylene and dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride) to clean spray guns. Many spray guns contain aluminum, which reacts strongly to chlorinated solvents. Contact the solvent or coating manufacturer as needed regarding potential chemical reactions.
  5. Risk of injection - Do not point spray gun at any person or any part of the body. In case of skin injection, seek medical attention immediately.
  6. Spraying hazardous materials may result in serious injury or death. Do not spray pesticide, acid, corrosive material, fertilizer, or toxic chemicals.
  7. Paints and solvents may be harmful or fatal if swallowed or inhaled. Avoid prolonged skin contact with solvents or paints as they will irritate skin. After any contact, immediately wash off exposed area with hot, soapy water.
  8. Attach all accessories properly to the tool before plugging in the tool. A loose accessory may detach or break during operation.
  9. Maintain labels and nameplates on the tool. These carry important safety information. If unreadable or missing, contact Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement.
  10. Avoid unintentional starting. Prepare to begin work before turning on the tool.
  11. Do not leave the tool unattended when it is plugged into an electrical outlet. Turn off the tool, and unplug it from its electrical outlet before leaving.
  12. This product is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of children.
  13. People with pacemakers should consult their physician(s) before use. Electromagnetic fields in close proximity to heart pacemaker could cause pacemaker interference or pacemaker failure. In addition, people with pacemakers should: Avoid operating alone. Do not use with power switch locked on. Properly maintain and inspect to avoid electrical shock. Properly ground power cord. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) should also be implemented – it prevents sustained electrical shock.
  14. The warnings, precautions, and instructions discussed in this instruction manual cannot cover all possible conditions and situations that may occur. It must be understood by the operator that common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, but must be supplied by the operator.

Grounding

AWARNING TO PREVENT ELECTRIC SHOCK AND DEATH FROM INCORRECT GROUNDING WIRE CONNECTION: Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do not modify the power cord plug provided with the tool. Never remove the grounding prong from the plug. Do not use the tool if the power cord or plug is damaged. If damaged, have it repaired by a service facility before use. If the plug will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

1. Tools marked "Double Insulated" do not require grounding. They have a special double insulation system which satisfies OSHA requirements and complies with the applicable standards of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., the Canadian Standard Association, and the National Electrical Code.

2. Double insulated tools may be used in either of the 120 volt outlets shown in the preceding illustration. (See Figure A.)

3. This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

Extension Cords

1. Grounded tools require a three wire extension cord. Double Insulated tools can use either a two or three wire extension cord.

2. As the distance from the supply outlet increases, you must use a heavier gauge extension cord. Using extension cords with inadequately sized wire causes a serious drop in voltage, resulting in loss of power and possible tool damage. (See Table A.)

3. The smaller the gauge number of the wire, the greater the capacity of the cord. For example, a 14 gauge cord can carry a higher current than a 16 gauge cord. (See Table A.)

4. When using more than one extension cord to make up the total length, make sure each cord contains at least the minimum wire size required. (See Table A.)

5. If you are using one extension cord for more than one tool, add the nameplate amperes and use the sum to determine the required minimum cord size. (See Table A.)

HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY.

Set-Up: Before Use

Read the ENTIRE IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION section at the beginning of this manual including all text under subheadings therein before set up or use of this product.

Assemble Spray Gun

ONLY USE 32oz CUP WITH 1.0 FINISH SPRAY GUN. ONLY USE 48oz CUP WITH 3.0 PAINT SPRAY GUN.

  1. Line up marking on Spray Gun Body to marking on Spray Gun Handle.
  2. Turn Spray Gun Handle clockwise until it locks with Spray Gun Body.
  3. Push Clip forward until it clicks to attach Spray Gun Handle and Spray Gun Body together.

Note: If using 1.0mm Finish Sprayer, remove Handle Extender so that Sprayer sits level.

Attach Casters

  1. Attach two Locking Swivel Casters (29) to the front (air outlet side).
  2. Attach two Swivel Casters (15) to the back (power cord side).

Attach Storage Hook

  1. Slide Storage Hook over narrow part of handle.
  2. Rotate Storage Hook 90°.
  3. Slide Storage Hook down over thick part of handle.

Attach Air Hose

  1. Add a small amount of petroleum jelly to the two tabs on hose connector.
  2. Attach one end of Air Hose to Air Outlet by lining up the tabs to the grooves inside the Inlet. Turn the Air Hose clockwise until it is securely in place.
  3. Add a small amount of petroleum jelly to the two tabs on other hose connector.
  4. Attach other end of Air Hose to Spray Gun air inlet by lining up the tabs to the grooves inside the Inlet. Turn the Air Hose clockwise until it is securely in place.

Adjust Handle

  1. Press Button and raise or lower Handle.

Operating Instructions

Read the ENTIRE IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION section at the beginning of this manual including all text under subheadings therein before set up or use of this product.

Inspect tool before use, looking for damaged, loose, and missing parts. If any problems are found, do not use tool until repaired. Damaged or missing parts can increase risk of electric shock.

Workpiece and Work Area Set Up

  1. Designate a work area that is clean and well lit. The work area must not allow access by children or pets to prevent distraction and injury.
  2. Before spraying, mask nearby objects not being sprayed and lay cloths (not included) on the floors.

Spray Gun Setup and Adjustment

RISK OF EXPLOSION - DO NOT SPRAY FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS.

Note: This Spray Gun can only be used for spraying water-based or oil-based low viscosity paints, stains and varnishes.

3.0mm Sprayer - For thick materials, such as latex paint, where thinning is normally required.

1.0mm Sprayer - For thin materials, such as stain.

IMPORTANT! Before THINNING, check the viscosity of FLUID.

  1. Carefully strain the material through a paint strainer or a piece of cheesecloth.
  2. Fully submerge the included Viscosity Cup into the material.
  3. Lift the Cup out of the material and time how many seconds it takes for it to completely run out of the cup.
  4. Refer to Viscosity Chart for recommended time for different materials.

Note: Proper material mixture is essential. Follow the manufacturer's directions for thinning instructions. Most materials will spray easily if they are thinned properly.

  1. If necessary, thin the material according to manufacturer's directions and mix thoroughly.
  2. Check viscosity. Thin and check until proper viscosity is achieved.
  3. Remove Cup's Lid.
  4. Fill the Cup no higher than: a. 3.0mm Sprayer - 48 oz. mark b. 1.0mm Sprayer - 32 oz. mark
  5. Replace Cup's Lid. Securely tighten Cup and Lid.

Fan Pattern

3.0mm Sprayer

  1. Loosen Lock Knob
  2. Turn Air Cap until desired pattern is selected.
  3. Tighten Lock Knob.

1.0mm Sprayer

  1. Turn Fan Pattern Adjustment Ring until desired pattern is selected.

Test Spray

  1. Plug the unit into an electrical outlet.
  2. Press Power Switch.
  3. Spray on piece of scrap material in short bursts, then check consistency.
  4. Adjustments:
    1. Airflow - Turn Airflow Control Knob clockwise until it stops for maximum air flow. To reduce overspray, turn counterclockwise to decrease airflow.
    2. Fluid Control - Turn Fluid Control Knob clockwise to increase fluid and counterclockwise to decrease fluid.
    3. Spray Width - Turn Spray Width Knob to the right to increase width and to the left to decrease width.

Spraying Technique

When first filled, the sprayer may take up a short time after the trigger is depressed to prime and start spraying.

IMPORTANT: Proper spraying technique is ESSENTIAL to achieve good results.

  1. First, prepare the Spray Gun according to the instructions under Spray Gun Setup and Adjustment on page 12.
  2. Keep the Spray Gun upright and at a right angle to the workpiece - See Figure B.

Correct Gun Angle

Move your arm, not just your wrist. Point gun directly towards the surface and maintain an even, steady distance and speed.

Incorrect Gun Angle

Do not pivot your wrist or wave the gun like a fan towards the wall.

NOTICE: Do not stop when spraying. Spraying materials will start to set and dry as soon as they come in contact with the air. To avoid clogs, check Nozzle regularly for dried paint and remove with a cloth as needed.

  1. Depress Trigger fully and move Spray Gun in parallel strokes to the workpiece.
  2. Keep the distance from the workpiece between 2" and 12".
  3. To avoid paint build up:
    1. Apply two thin coats rather than one thick coat. Overlap 1/3 to 1/2 on second coat.
    2. Start moving the Spray Gun before fully depressing Trigger.
    3. Fully depress Trigger before contacting the workpiece.
    4. When finished with the stroke, release the Trigger while still moving the Spray Gun and after passing the workpiece - see Figure C.

Note: Doing this will produce a smoother finish. Do not stop moving the Spray Gun while spraying. If the Spray Gun stops even briefly while spraying the paint will build up and run down the workpiece.

Note: The stroke speed and Fluid Control Knob adjustment will determine how much paint is being applied.

  1. Keep Cup filled half-way full to prevent spattering. When refilling, loosen Lid first to release pressure.
  2. To prevent accidents, after use, release Trigger, unplug the tool, safely discharge any residual air pressure, and release Trigger again.
  3. Clean Spray Gun and Cup IMMEDIATELY after EVERY use and when it will be idle for more than 30 minutes. Delayed or inadequate cleaning will permanently clog the Spray Gun.

Cleaning

RISK OF EXPLOSION - DO NOT SPRAY FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS.

  1. Follow solvent manufacturer's clean up instructions and safety precautions.
  2. If collecting flushed solvents in metal container, transfer to nonmetal container, and flush metal container.
  3. Work far away from any ignition sources in a vapor free area.
  4. Keep class ABC fire extinguisher nearby.

After Every Use

NOTICE: Only use water for water-based materials or mineral spirits for oil-based materials. Do not immerse Spray Gun Handle in solvent.

  1. Unplug the unit from its electrical outlet.
  2. Designate a container for waste.
  3. Loosen Lid to relieve pressure, then remove Cup.
  4. Carefully scrape paint back into paint container.
  5. Fill Cup 1/4 full with solvent (sold separately). Replace Cup, then shake Spray Gun for several seconds.
  6. Remove Cup, pour solvent into waste container and wipe away any paint residue from Cup with clean cloth.
  7. Fill Cup 1/4 to 1/2 full with solvent. Replace Cup. Securely tighten Cup and Lid.
  8. Shake Spray Gun up and down vigorously for five seconds.
  9. Repeat steps 5. to 8. until Cup is clean.
  10. Fill Cup 1/4 full with solvent (sold separately). Replace Cup, then shake Spray Gun for several seconds.
  11. Plug the unit into an electrical outlet.
  12. Point Spray Gun at interior side of waste container. Depress Trigger and slightly shake Spray Gun while spraying solvent into container. Once the Cup is empty, repeat the process until solvent comes out clean.
  13. Unplug the unit from its electrical outlet.
  14. Point the Spray Gun into the waste container and depress the Trigger again to make sure no air remains.
  15. Separate Spray Gun Handle from Spray Gun Body. Store Spray Gun Handle away from cleaning area.
  16. Remove Cup and Suction Tube.
  17. Remove Cup's Lid, then remove check valve under Lid.
  18. Remove Lock Ring, Air Cap, and Nozzle.

  1. Inspect parts and soak in solvent as necessary. Use brushes and toothpicks (sold separately) to remove any paint.

Note: To prevent damage, do not use metal objects to clean parts.

  1. Wipe down Spray Gun Body with a clean cloth and solvent.
  2. Make sure all parts are dry and free from residual paint, then reassemble Spray Gun.

NOTICE: Do not use any kind of lubricant. The lubricant will mix with paint, causing poor results.

Waste Disposal

After cleaning, dispose of waste according to the solvent manufacturer's directions and local hazardous waste standards.

User-Maintenance Instructions

Procedures not specifically explained in this manual must be performed only by a qualified technician.

AWARNING TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY: Detach the air supply and safely discharge any residual air pressure in the tool before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures.

TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY FROM TOOL FAILURE: Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise, vibration, or leaking air occurs, have the problem corrected before further use.

Inspection

Note: These procedures are in addition to the regular checks and maintenance explained as part of the regular operation of the air-operated tool.

BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition of the tool. Check for:

Storage

Store in a dry, secure area out of reach of children.

Air Filter Maintenance

  1. Remove Air Hose.
  2. Remove Air Inlet Covers and Filters.
  3. Inspect Air Filters.
  4. If necessary, Wash Air Filters in warm water and mild detergent several times. Rinse. Squeeze out excess water and allow them to dry completely.
  5. Install cleaned Air Filters and replace Air Inlet Covers.

Troubleshooting - Spray Pattern Diagnosis

Note: The drawings on the left below resemble symptoms of spray pattern problems. Refer to the accompanying possible causes and likely solutions to the right.

Follow all safety precautions whenever diagnosing or servicing the tool. Disconnect air supply before service.
