Garmin Edge 830 Owner's Manual

Device Overview

The Garmin Edge 830 is a cycling computer designed to assist with training, navigation, and performance tracking. It features a screen, various buttons, and electrical contacts for charging and data transfer.

Key Device Components:

  • Power/Wake Button: Press to enter sleep mode and wake the device. Hold to turn the device on/off and lock the touchscreen.
  • Lap Button: Press to mark a new lap.
  • Start/Stop Button: Press to start and stop the activity timer.
  • Electrical Contacts: Used for charging via a USB cable or an Edge external battery pack accessory.

Home Screen Overview

The home screen provides quick access to the device's features:

  • Ride: Select to start a ride. Use the arrows to change activity profiles.
  • Navigation: Select to mark locations, search for locations, and create or navigate courses.
  • Training: Access segments, workouts, and other training options.
  • History/Settings: Access history, personal records, contacts, and settings.
  • Connect IQ™: Access Connect IQ apps, widgets, and data fields.

Viewing Edge Widgets

Swipe down from the top of the home screen to view widgets. Swipe left or right to navigate between them. The last viewed widget appears on subsequent swipes.

The settings widget displays device status icons. A flashing icon indicates the device is searching for a signal or connection.

Using the Touchscreen

  • Tap the screen to view the timer overlay when the timer is running. This overlay allows returning to the home screen during a ride.
  • Select [Home Icon] to return to the home screen.
  • Swipe or select arrows to scroll through options.
  • Select [Back Arrow] to return to the previous page.
  • Select [Checkmark] to save changes and close a page.
  • Select [X Icon] to close a page and return to the previous page.
  • Select [Search Icon] to search near a location.
  • Select [Trash Icon] to delete an item.
  • Select [Info Icon] for more information.

Locking the Touchscreen

To prevent accidental touches, you can lock the screen by holding the power button and selecting 'Lock Screen'. During an activity, a dedicated lock icon is available.

Pairing Your Smartphone

To use connected features, pair your device directly through the Garmin Connect™ app, not through your phone's Bluetooth settings.

  1. Install and open the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone.
  2. Turn on the Edge device by holding the power button. Follow on-screen prompts for language selection and pairing.
  3. Add your device to your Garmin Connect account by following the app's instructions. If you have previously paired a device, navigate to the menu, select 'Garmin Devices', and 'Add Device'.

Successful pairing is confirmed by a message, and the device syncs automatically.

Charging the Device

NOTICE: Ensure the USB port and surrounding area are dry before charging to prevent corrosion.

The device charges via a standard wall outlet or a computer USB port using the built-in lithium-ion battery.

NOTE: Charging may not occur outside the approved temperature range.

  1. Pull up the weather cap from the USB port.
  2. Connect the small end of the USB cable to the device's USB port and the large end to a power source (AC adapter or computer).
  3. The device turns on when connected to power. Charge fully.
  4. Close the weather cap after charging.

About the Battery

WARNING: Contains a lithium-ion battery. Refer to the Important Safety and Product Information guide for details.

Installing the Standard Mount

For optimal GPS reception, orient the device's front towards the sky. The mount can be installed on the stem or handlebars.

  1. Choose a secure mounting location that does not interfere with safe bike operation.
  2. Place the rubber disk on the back of the bike mount; its tabs help secure it.
  3. Handlebar Mounting: Place the appropriate rubber pad (thicker for 25.4mm, thinner for 31.8mm handlebars) around the handlebar. Place the handlebar connector around the pad and tighten the screw. Garmin recommends a torque of 7 lbf-in (0.8 N-m). Periodically check screw tightness.
  4. Stem Mounting: Place the mount on the bike stem and attach it securely with the two bands.
  5. Align the device's tabs with the mount's notches.
  6. Press down slightly and turn the device clockwise until it locks into place.

Releasing the Edge: Turn the device clockwise to unlock and lift it off the mount.

Installing the Out-Front Mount

NOTE: Skip this if the mount is not included.

  1. Select a secure mounting location that does not interfere with safe bike operation.
  2. Use the 3mm hex key to remove the screw from the handlebar connector.
  3. Handlebar Diameter Options: Use the thicker pad for 25.4mm, the thinner pad for 31.8mm handlebars. Do not use a rubber pad for 35mm handlebars.
  4. Position the handlebar connector around the handlebar with the mount arm above the bike stem.
  5. Use the 3mm hex key to loosen the screw on the mount arm, adjust the arm's position, and tighten the screw. Garmin recommends a torque of 20 lbf-in (2.26 N-m). Periodically check screw tightness.
  6. If needed, use the 2mm hex key to remove and rotate the connector for orientation, then replace the screws.
  7. Replace and tighten the screw on the handlebar connector (torque: 7 lbf-in or 0.8 N-m). Periodically check screw tightness.
  8. Align the device's tabs with the mount's notches.
  9. Press down slightly and turn the device clockwise until it locks into place.

Installing the Mountain Bike Mount

NOTE: Skip this if the mount is not included.

  1. Select a secure mounting location that does not interfere with safe bike operation.
  2. Use the 3mm hex key to remove the screw from the handlebar connector.

Acquiring Satellite Signals

The device needs a clear sky view for satellite acquisition. Time and date are set automatically based on GPS position.

  1. Go outdoors to an open area, orienting the device's front towards the sky.
  2. Wait for the device to locate satellites (30-60 seconds). Satellite bars turn green when ready.

Using the Backlight

Tap the touchscreen to turn on the backlight. Adjust timeout in Display Settings.

  1. From the home or data screen, swipe down from the top.
  2. Select [Brightness Icon] for manual adjustment or 'Auto' for automatic brightness based on ambient light.

Training

Going for a Ride

Pair wireless sensors during initial setup if applicable. If your device came with sensors, they are pre-paired.

  1. Hold the power button to turn on the device.
  2. Go outside and wait for satellite acquisition.
  3. From the home screen, select an activity profile (e.g., using [Left Arrow] or [Right Arrow]).
  4. Select [Activity Icon].
  5. Select [Start Icon] to start the activity timer.

History is recorded only while the timer is running.

Swipe left/right for data screens. Swipe down to view widgets. Tap to see the timer overlay. Select [Stop Icon] to stop the timer.

TIP: Select the ride type accurately before saving for better course creation.

  1. Select 'Save Ride'.
  2. Select [Checkmark].

Using Virtual Partner®

Virtual Partner is a training tool to help meet goals. Go for a ride and scroll to the Virtual Partner page to see the leader. Use [Plus Icon] and [Minus Icon] to adjust Virtual Partner speed.

Segments

Segments are virtual race courses. You can race segments and compare performance against personal records, other riders, or Garmin Connect community members. Uploaded activities show segment positions.

Strava™ Segments: Download Strava segments to compare performance with past rides and other users. Sign up for Strava via the segments widget in Garmin Connect. More info at www.strava.com.

Following a Segment From Garmin Connect:

  1. Connect the device to your computer via USB.
  2. Go to connect.garmin.com.
  3. Create or select a segment.
  4. Select 'Send to Device'.
  5. Disconnect the device and turn it on.
  6. Select Training > Segments.
  7. Select the segment.
  8. Select Map > Ride.

Enabling Segments: Select Training > Segments, select a segment, then 'Enable' to receive prompts for approaching segments.

Racing a Segment: Select [Start Icon] to begin a ride. When you enter an enabled segment, race it. The segment data screen appears. Use arrows to adjust your goal (segment leader, past performance, etc.). A message indicates segment completion.

Viewing Segment Details: Select Training > Segments, select a segment, then choose Map, Elevation, or Leaderboard.

Segment Options: Access via Training > Segments > [Options Icon]. Options include Turn Guidance, Auto Select Effort, Search, Enable/Disable, and Delete.

Deleting a Segment: Select Training > Segments, select a segment, then [Options Icon] > Delete Segment.

Workouts

Create custom workouts with goals for steps (distance, time, calories). Workouts can be created in Garmin Connect and transferred, or directly on the device. Schedule workouts via Garmin Connect.

Creating a Workout:

  1. Select Training > Workouts > Create New.
  2. Enter a name and select [Checkmark].
  3. Select 'Step Type' (e.g., 'Rest').
  4. Select 'Duration' (e.g., Distance).
  5. Enter custom duration if needed.
  6. Select 'Target' (e.g., Heart Rate Zone) and set the zone or custom range. The device alerts if you exceed/drop below the target.
  7. Select [Checkmark] to save the step.
  8. Select 'Add New Step' for more steps.
  9. Select [Checkmark] to save the workout.

Repeating Workout Steps: Add steps and select 'Repeat' or 'Repeat Until' for specific durations or conditions.

Following a Workout From the Web: Download workouts from Garmin Connect (requires an account). Connect device, go to www.garminconnect.com, create/save workout, select 'Send to Device', disconnect.

Starting a Workout: Select Training > Workouts, select a workout, then 'Ride'. The device shows each step, target, and data. Audible alarms notify of step completion.

Stopping a Workout: Select [Next Step Icon] to advance, [Restart Icon] to restart a step, or [Stop Icon] to stop the activity timer. Alternatively, swipe down and select 'Press to Stop'.

Editing a Workout: Select Training > Workouts, select workout, [Options Icon], select step, 'Edit Step', change attributes, save.

Deleting a Workout: Select Training > Workouts, select workout, [Options Icon] > Delete Workout.

About the Training Calendar

The training calendar syncs with Garmin Connect. Scheduled workouts appear by date. You can view or perform them. Sending new scheduled workouts from Garmin Connect overwrites the existing calendar.

Using Garmin Connect Training Plans

Download training plans from Garmin Connect (requires an account). Browse, schedule, and download plans to your device.

  1. Connect device to computer.
  2. Go to www.garminconnect.com.
  3. Select and schedule a training plan.
  4. Review in your calendar.
  5. Select [Download Icon] and follow instructions.

Interval Workouts

Create interval workouts based on distance or time. The device saves the last custom interval workout.

Creating an Interval Workout: Select Training > Intervals > Edit > Intervals > Type. Choose Distance, Time, or Open. Enter values and select [Checkmark]. Select 'Rest'. You can set repetitions or open-ended warm-up/cool-down.

Starting an Interval Workout: Select Training > Intervals > Do Workout. Select [Start Icon]. Follow on-screen instructions.

Training Indoors

The device has an indoor activity profile with GPS turned off. This saves battery. GPS is automatically off when using an indoor trainer.

  1. Select [Activity Profiles Icon] > Activity Profiles.
  2. Select a profile.
  3. Select GPS Mode > Off.

Speed and distance are unavailable without compatible sensors or an indoor trainer that transmits this data.

Pairing Your ANT+® Indoor Trainer

  1. Bring the device within 3m (10 ft.) of the trainer.
  2. Select Training > Indoor Trainer > Pair ANT+ Bike Trainer.
  3. Select the trainer and 'Add'.

The trainer appears as a connected sensor. Customize data fields to display sensor data.

Using an ANT+ Indoor Trainer

Mount your bike on the trainer and pair it (see above). Use the device to simulate resistance while following a course, activity, or workout.

  1. Select Training > Indoor Trainer.
  2. Choose 'Follow a Course', 'Follow an Activity', or 'Follow a Workout'.
  3. Select the course, activity, or workout.
  4. Select 'Ride'.
  5. Select an activity profile.
  6. Select [Start Icon].

The trainer adjusts resistance based on course elevation data.

Setting Resistance

  1. Select Training > Indoor Trainer > Set Resistance.
  2. Set the resistance force.
  3. Select an activity profile.
  4. Start pedaling. Adjust resistance as needed.

Setting Target Power

  1. Select Training > Indoor Trainer > Set Target Power.
  2. Set the target power value.
  3. Select an activity profile.
  4. Start pedaling.

The trainer adjusts resistance to maintain constant power output based on speed.

Setting a Training Target

Train towards distance, distance/time, or distance/speed goals. The device provides real-time feedback.

  1. Select Training > Set a Target.
  2. Choose an option: 'Distance Only', 'Distance and Time', or 'Distance and Speed'.
  3. The training target screen shows estimated finish time.
  4. Select [Checkmark].
  5. Select [Start Icon].
  6. Scroll to view the Virtual Partner screen if needed.
  7. After the activity, select > Save Ride.

Personal Records

The device displays new personal records achieved during rides (fastest time, longest ride, most ascent). With a power meter, it shows maximum 20-minute power.

Viewing Your Personal Records: Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Personal Records.

Reverting a Personal Record: Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Personal Records, select a record, then 'Previous Record'.

Deleting a Personal Record: Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Personal Records, select a record, then [Options Icon] > Delete.

Training Zones

Configure heart rate zones (Setting Your Heart Rate Zones, page 12) and power zones (Setting Your Power Zones, page 13).

Navigation

Navigation features apply to courses and segments. Access includes Locations, Courses, Route Settings, and Map Settings.

Locations

Record and store locations.

Marking Your Location: Go for a ride, select Navigation > [Mark Location Icon] > [Checkmark].

Saving Locations from the Map: Select Navigation > [Map Icon] > Select Search Area > A Map Point. Browse map, select location, select location info, then [Options Icon] > Save.

Navigating to a Location: Select Navigation. Choose from Search Tools (POI, City, Address, Intersection, Coordinates), Saved Locations, or Recent Finds. Select a location, then 'Ride', and follow instructions.

Navigating to Known Coordinates: Select Navigation > Search Tools > Coordinates. Enter coordinates, select [Checkmark], and follow instructions.

Navigating Back to Start: During a ride, select anywhere on screen, then [Navigation Icon] > Back to Start. Choose 'Along Same Route' or 'Most Direct Route', then 'Ride'.

Stopping Navigation: Scroll to map, select [Navigation Icon] > [Stop Icon].

Projecting a Location: Select Navigation > Saved Locations, select a location, select info, [Options Icon] > Project Location. Enter bearing and distance, select [Checkmark].

Editing Locations: Select Navigation > Saved Locations, select location, select info bar, [Options Icon]. Select attribute (e.g., Change Elevation) and enter new info.

Deleting a Location: Select Navigation > Saved Locations, select location, select info bar, [Options Icon] > Delete Location.

Courses

Follow previously recorded activities or courses downloaded from Garmin Connect. Race against them to improve performance.

Planning and Riding a Course: Create custom courses by adding waypoints. Select Navigation > Courses > Course Creator > Add First Location. Add locations via current location, saved locations, map, POI, cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. Select 'Use' and 'Add Next Location' repeatedly. Select 'View Map', then 'Ride'.

Creating and Riding a Round-Trip Course: Select Navigation > Courses > Round-Trip Course. Enter distance, start location, and start direction. Select 'Ride'.

Following a Course From Garmin Connect: Download courses from Garmin Connect (requires account). Open app or go to connect.garmin.com, create/select course, 'Send to Device'. On Edge, select Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses, select course, then 'Ride'.

Tips for Riding a Course: Use turn guidance. Warm up before starting. Stay on course path. Scroll to map to view course. A message appears if you stray.

Viewing Course Details: Select Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses, select course. View Summary, Map, Elevation, or Laps.

Displaying a Course on the Map: Select Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses, select course, Settings. Enable 'Always Display' and choose a color. Course points can also be displayed.

Course Options: Access via Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses > [Options Icon]. Options include Turn Guidance, Off Crs. Warnings, Search, Filter, and Delete.

Stopping a Course: Scroll to map, select [Navigation Icon] > [Stop Icon].

Deleting a Course: Select Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses, select course, [Options Icon] > Delete.

Route Settings

Access via [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles > Navigation > Routing. Options include Popularity Routing, Routing Mode, Calculation Method, Lock on Road, Avoidance Setup, and Recalculation.

Selecting an Activity for Route Calculation: Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Navigation > Routing > Routing Mode. Choose mode (e.g., Road Cycling, Mountain Biking).

Map Settings

Access via [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles > Navigation > Map. Options include Orientation (North Up, Track Up, 3D Mode), Auto Zoom, Guide Text, Map Visibility, and Map Information.

Changing the Map Orientation: Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Navigation > Map > Orientation. Choose an option.

Bluetooth Connected Features

The Edge device offers Bluetooth features via the Garmin Connect and Connect IQ apps.

  • Activity Uploads to Garmin Connect: Automatically sends activities upon completion.
  • Assistance: Sends automated text/email with name and GPS location to emergency contacts via Garmin Connect app.
  • Audio Prompts: Garmin Connect app plays status announcements on your smartphone.
  • Bike Alarm: Alerts if motion is detected.
  • Connect IQ Downloadable Features: Download apps, data fields, and widgets.
  • Course, Segment, Workout Downloads: Send activities from Garmin Connect via smartphone.
  • Device to Device Transfers: Wirelessly transfer files between compatible Edge devices.
  • Find my Edge: Locates a lost paired device.
  • GroupTrack: Track other riders in your group using LiveTrack. Preset messages can be sent.
  • Incident Detection: Sends automated messages to emergency contacts if an incident is detected.
  • LiveTrack: Allows friends/family to follow your activities in real time.
  • Messages: Reply to calls/texts with preset messages (Android™ only).
  • Notifications: Displays phone notifications on the device.
  • Social Media Interactions: Post updates to social media when uploading activities.
  • Weather Updates: Sends real-time weather conditions and alerts.

Starting a GroupTrack Session

Requires a paired smartphone with Garmin Connect Mobile app.

  1. On Edge: Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > GroupTrack.
  2. In Garmin Connect Mobile app: Settings > Connections > LiveTrack > GroupTrack.
  3. Set 'Visible to' to 'All Connections'.
  4. Select 'Start LiveTrack'.
  5. On Edge: Select [Start Icon] and go for a ride. Scroll to map to view connections.

Tips for GroupTrack Sessions: Ride with GPS. Pair smartphone via Bluetooth. Ensure connections have LiveTrack active. Keep connections within range (40 km / 25 mi.).

Transferring Files to Another Edge Device

Wirelessly transfer courses, segments, and workouts via Bluetooth. Turn on both devices, bring them within 3m (10 ft.). On source device: [Settings Icon] > Settings > Device Transfers > Share Files. Select file type and files. On receiving device: [Settings Icon] > Device Transfers. Select nearby connection and files to receive.

Playing Audio Prompts on Your Smartphone

Set the Garmin Connect Mobile app to play motivational status announcements (lap number, time, navigation, power, pace, heart rate). The app mutes primary audio to play prompts. Volume can be adjusted in the app.

  1. In Garmin Connect Mobile app: Settings > Garmin Devices.
  2. Select your device.
  3. Select Device Settings > Audio Prompts.

Incident Detection and Assistance Features

Incident Detection

CAUTION: Incident detection is a supplemental feature for road use and should not be relied upon for emergency assistance. The Garmin Connect Mobile app does not contact emergency services.

When an incident is detected (with GPS enabled), the app sends an automated text/email with name and GPS location to emergency contacts. A countdown appears; you can cancel the message. Emergency contacts must be able to receive texts. Your smartphone needs a data plan and network coverage.

Assistance

CAUTION: Assistance is a supplemental feature and should not be relied upon for emergency assistance. The Garmin Connect Mobile app does not contact emergency services.

When connected to the app (with GPS enabled), you can send an automated text message with name and GPS location to emergency contacts. Setup requires emergency contact information in the Garmin Connect Mobile app. Your smartphone needs a data plan and network coverage.

Setting Up the Incident Detection and Assistance Features

  1. Install and open the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
  2. Pair your smartphone with your device (see Pairing Your Smartphone).
  3. In the app: Settings > Emergency Contacts. Enter rider info and emergency contacts.

Incident detection is automatically enabled when emergency contacts are entered. Ensure GPS is enabled on your Edge device.

Viewing Your Emergency Contacts: Select [Profile Icon] > Contacts. Names and numbers appear.

Requesting Assistance: Hold the power button for four seconds. The device beeps and sends a message after a countdown. You can select 'Send' to send immediately.

Turning Incident Detection On and Off: Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > System > Incident Detection.

Cancelling an Automated Message: Select 'Cancel' before the 30-second countdown ends.

Sending a Status Update After an Incident: If an incident is detected, you can send an 'I'm Okay' message from the status page.

Wireless Sensors

The device supports ANT+ or Bluetooth sensors. Purchase optional sensors at buy.garmin.com.

Putting On the Heart Rate Monitor

NOTE: Skip if no heart rate monitor is used.

Wear the monitor directly on skin, below the sternum. It should be snug.

  1. Snap the heart rate monitor module onto the strap. Ensure Garmin logos are right-side up.
  2. Wet the electrodes and contact patches for a good connection.
  3. Wrap the strap around your chest and connect the hook to the loop.
  4. Bring the device within 3m (10 ft.) of the monitor. The monitor is active and sending data.

TIP: If heart rate data is erratic, check troubleshooting tips.

Recovery Advisor

Displays time until full recovery for the next hard workout. Recovery time counts down from activity completion.

Viewing Your Recovery Time: Requires a paired heart rate monitor and user profile setup. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Recovery Advisor > Enable. Go for a ride, save it. Recovery time appears (6 hours to 4 days).

About VO2 Max. Estimates

VO2 max. indicates athletic performance. Estimates are provided by Firstbeat. Use with a compatible heart rate monitor and power meter for cycling VO2 max. estimates.

Getting Your VO2 Max. Estimate: Requires paired heart rate monitor and power meter, and user profile setup. Ride at steady, high intensity for at least 20 minutes outdoors. Save the ride. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Training Status > VO2 Max. The estimate appears on a color gauge.

NOTE: Estimates may seem inaccurate initially; the device learns over several rides.

Tips for Cycling VO2 Max. Estimates: Ensure devices are paired and have good battery. Ride with sustained, moderately hard effort. Maintain heart rate >70% of max and constant power output. Avoid rolling terrain and drafting.

Viewing Your Stress Score

Requires a paired chest heart rate monitor. Stress score is a 3-minute test measuring heart rate variability to determine overall stress (1-100). Training, sleep, and nutrition affect performance. Measure stress consistently.

  1. Select My Stats > Stress Score > Measure.
  2. Stand still and rest for 3 minutes.

Setting Your Heart Rate Zones

Device uses user profile info for zones. Adjust manually for fitness goals. For accurate calorie data, set max heart rate, resting heart rate, and zones.

  1. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Training Zones > Heart Rate Zones.
  2. Enter max, lactate threshold, and resting heart rate values.

Auto detect feature updates zones automatically. You can also edit values manually. Select 'Based On:' (BPM, % Max, % HRR, %LTHR).

About Heart Rate Zones: Zones help measure and improve cardiovascular strength. Generally calculated as percentages of maximum heart rate.

Fitness Goals: Heart rate is a measure of exercise intensity. Training in specific zones improves cardiovascular capacity. Use tables or online calculators to determine zones. Default max heart rate is 220 minus age.

Tips for Erratic Heart Rate Data: Reapply water to electrodes, tighten strap, warm up, follow care instructions, wear cotton shirt, avoid synthetic fabrics, move away from interference sources (EM fields, 2.4 GHz sensors, etc.).

Installing the Speed Sensor

NOTE: Skip if no speed sensor is used.

Secure bike on a stand. Place sensor on wheel hub. Pull strap around hub and attach to hook. Rotate wheel to check clearance. Sensor should not contact bike parts. LED flashes green for activity.

Installing the Cadence Sensor

NOTE: Skip if no cadence sensor is used.

Secure bike on a stand. Select band size for crank arm. Place sensor on inside of crank arm. Pull bands around crank arm and attach to hooks. Rotate crank arm to check clearance. LED flashes green for activity.

About the Speed and Cadence Sensors: Cadence data is recorded. GPS data is used for speed/distance if sensors are not paired. Cadence is pedal revolutions per minute (rpm).

Data Averaging for Cadence or Power: Non-zero data-averaging setting excludes zero values when not pedaling. Change in Data Recording Settings.

Pairing Your Wireless Sensors

Pair ANT+ or Bluetooth sensors (e.g., heart rate monitor). Bring device within 3m (10 ft.) of sensor. Stay 10m (33 ft.) from other riders' sensors.

  1. Select [Profile Icon] > Sensors > Add Sensor.
  2. Select sensor type or 'Search All'.
  3. Select one or more sensors to pair.

Training with Power Meters

Visit www.garmin.com/intosports for compatible ANT+ sensors. Adjust power zones, use range alerts, and customize data fields.

Setting Your Power Zones: Default values may not match abilities. Manually adjust zones or use Garmin Connect. Enter FTP value to auto-calculate zones. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > Training Zones > Power Zones. Enter FTP, select 'Based On:' (watts or % FTP).

Calibrating Your Power Meter: Install, pair, and record data. See manufacturer's instructions. Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > Sensors, select power meter, 'Calibrate'. Pedal until message appears.

Pedal-Based Power

Vector measures pedal force, direction, and rotation to determine power (watts). It reports left-right leg power balance (Vector S does not).

Cycling Dynamics

Measure how power is applied throughout the pedal stroke to understand riding style and evaluate bike fit. Requires a dual sensing Edge system. More info at www.garmin.com/cyclingdynamics.

Using Cycling Dynamics: Pair Vector power meter. Recording uses extra memory. Go for a ride, view cycling dynamics screen for power phase, total power, and platform center offset. Hold data fields to customize.

Updating the Vector Software Using the Edge Device

Pair Edge device with Vector system. Send ride data to Garmin Connect; it checks for updates. Bring Edge device within 3m (10 ft.) of sensor. Rotate crank arm; device prompts for updates.

Getting Your FTP Estimate

Device estimates FTP based on user profile. For accuracy, conduct an FTP test with a paired power meter and heart rate monitor.

Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > FTP. Estimate appears as watts/kg and watts.

Conducting an FTP Test: Requires paired power meter and heart rate monitor. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > FTP > FTP Test > Ride. Select [Start Icon]. Follow test steps. Select [Stop Icon]. Select Save Ride.

Automatically Calculating FTP: Requires paired power meter and heart rate monitor. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > FTP > Enable Auto Calculation. Ride steadily at high intensity for 20+ minutes outdoors. Save ride. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > FTP.

Using Electronic Shifters

Pair compatible electronic shifters (e.g., Shimano Di2™) with the device. Customize data fields. Device displays current adjustment values.

Situational Awareness

Use with Varia Vision™, smart bike lights, and rearview radar for improved awareness. Update Edge software if needed for Varia devices.

History

Records time, distance, calories, speed, lap data, elevation, and sensor info. History is not recorded when the timer is stopped or paused. Upload history to Garmin Connect periodically.

Viewing Your Ride: Select [Profile Icon] > History > Rides. Select a ride and an option.

Viewing Your Time in Each Training Zone: Requires paired heart rate monitor/power meter. Select [Profile Icon] > History > Rides. Select a ride and an option (Time in HR Zone, Time in Power Zone, or Time in Zone).

Viewing Data Totals: Select [Profile Icon] > History > Totals.

Deleting a Ride: Select [Profile Icon] > History > Rides, select a ride, [Options Icon] > Delete.

Sending Your Ride to Garmin Connect

Sync via Garmin Connect Mobile app or USB cable to your computer.

Garmin Connect: Connect with friends, track, analyze, and share activities. Create an account via the app or connect.garmin.com. Store and analyze activity data. Plan training and share activities.

Wi-Fi® Connected Features: Upload activities automatically. Receive courses, workouts, and training plans wirelessly. Download software updates.

Setting Up Wi-Fi Connectivity: Download Garmin Connect Mobile app and pair smartphone, or download Garmin Express. Follow on-screen instructions.

Wi-Fi Settings

Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > Wi-Fi. Enable Wi-Fi. Auto Upload and Add Network options are available.

Data Recording

Uses 'Smart recording' (key points) or '1 Sec' recording (detailed track, uses more memory). Data averaging for cadence/power can be adjusted.

Data Management

NOTE: Not compatible with Windows 95/98/Me, NT®, Mac OS 10.3 and earlier.

Connecting the Device to Your Computer: Dry USB port. Connect via USB cable to computer. Device appears as a removable drive/volume.

Transferring Files to Your Device: Connect device. Open file browser, copy file, paste to device folder.

Deleting Files: Open Garmin drive/volume, select file, press Delete key. NOTICE: Do not delete unknown files.

Disconnecting the USB Cable: Safely remove hardware (Windows) or eject (Mac) before disconnecting to prevent data loss.

Customizing Your Device

Connect IQ™ Downloadable Features

Add data fields, widgets, and apps from Garmin and other providers via the Connect IQ Mobile app.

Downloading Connect IQ Features Using Your Computer: Connect device via USB. Go to apps.garmin.com, sign in, select feature, download.

Profiles

Profiles are collections of settings that optimize the device for different activities (e.g., training, mountain biking). Changes to settings like data fields or units are saved to the active profile.

Activity Profiles: Create up to ten profiles for different biking types. Customize data pages, totals, alerts, training zones, and navigation settings.

User Profile: Update gender, age, weight, height for accurate ride data. Select [Profile Icon] > My Stats > User Profile.

About Training Settings: Customize device for training needs. Settings are saved to activity profiles (e.g., time alerts, Auto Lap triggers).

Updating Your Activity Profile: Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles. Select a profile or 'Create New'. Edit name/color. Customize Data Screens, Default Ride Type, Segments, Alerts, Auto Features (Auto Lap, Auto Pause, Auto Sleep, Auto Scroll), Timer Start Mode, Nutrition/Hydration, Navigation (Map, Routing, Prompts, Sharp Bend Warnings), and GPS Mode.

Customizing the Data Screens: Select [Profile Icon] > Settings > Activity Profiles, select profile, Data Screens. Select data screen, enable, choose number of data fields, select field to change.

Changing the Satellite Setting: For better performance, enable GPS+GLONASS or GPS+GALILEO. This may reduce battery life. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, GPS Mode. Choose an option.

Alerts

Set alerts for time, distance, calorie, heart rate, cadence, and power goals. Alerts are saved with activity profiles.

Setting Range Alerts: For optional sensors, set alerts for values above/below a specified range or training zone. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Alerts. Choose alert type (Heart Rate, Cadence, Power), set min/max values or zones. Device beeps/messages when range is exceeded/dropped.

Setting a Recurring Alert: Notifies each time a specified value/interval is recorded (e.g., every 30 minutes). Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Alerts. Choose alert type, turn on, enter value.

Auto Lap

Mark laps automatically by position or distance. Useful for performance comparison.

Marking Laps by Position: Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Auto Features > Auto Lap > Auto Lap Trigger > By Position > Lap At. Select an option (Lap Press Only, Start and Lap, Mark and Lap). Customize lap data fields.

Marking Laps by Distance: Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Auto Features > Auto Lap > Auto Lap Trigger > By Distance > Lap At. Enter value. Customize lap data fields.

Using Auto Pause

Automatically pauses the timer when stopped or speed drops below a set value. Useful for stop lights. History is not recorded during pause.

  1. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Auto Features > Auto Pause.
  2. Select 'When Stopped' or 'Custom Speed'.

Customize optional time data fields.

Using Auto Sleep

Automatically enters sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. Screen turns off, sensors disconnect. Wi-Fi remains active. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Auto Features > Auto Sleep.

Using Auto Scroll

Automatically cycles through training data screens while the timer is running. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Auto Features > Auto Scroll. Select display speed.

Starting the Timer Automatically

Detects satellite acquisition and movement to start the timer or prompt you. Select [Profile Icon] > Activity Profiles, select profile, Timer Start Mode. Choose Manual, Prompted, or Auto.

Phone Settings

Select [Profile Icon] > Connected Features > Phone. Enable Bluetooth. Set 'Friendly Name'. 'Pair Smartphone' for connected features. 'Call and Text Alerts', 'Missed Calls and Texts', 'Text Reply Signature' options available.

System Settings

Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > System. Options include Display Settings, Data Recording Settings, Unit Settings, Tone Settings, and Language Settings.

Display Settings: Adjust Auto Brightness, Brightness, Backlight Timeout, Color Mode, and Screen Capture.

Data Recording Settings: Choose Recording Interval (Smart or 1 Sec). Adjust Cadence Averaging and Power Averaging. Log HRV option available.

Changing the Units of Measure: Select [Settings Icon] > System > Units. Select measurement type and unit.

Turning the Device Tones On and Off: Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > System > Tones.

Changing the Device Language: Select [Settings Icon] > System > Language.

Time Zones: Device automatically detects time zone and current time upon satellite acquisition or smartphone sync.

Setting Up Extended Display Mode: Use Edge 830 as an extended display for compatible Garmin multisport watches. Select [Settings Icon] > Settings > Extended Display Mode > Connect Watch. On compatible watch: Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Add New > Extended Display. Follow on-screen instructions. Normal Edge functions are disabled in this mode.

Exiting Extended Display Mode: Tap screen, select 'Exit Extended Display Mode'.

Heart Rate Monitor Specifications: User-replaceable CR2032 battery, 3 ATM water resistance, operating temp -5° to 50°C, 2.4 GHz ANT+.

Speed Sensor and Cadence Sensor Specifications: User-replaceable CR2032 battery (approx. 12 mo.), operating temp -20° to 60°C, 2.4 GHz ANT+, IPX7 water rating.

Device Care

NOTICE: Avoid extreme temperatures. Do not use sharp objects on touchscreen. Avoid chemical cleaners. Secure USB port weather cap.

Cleaning the Device: Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then wipe dry.

Caring for the Heart Rate Monitor: Rinse strap after use. Machine wash strap after seven uses. Do not use dryer. Hang or lay flat to dry. Unscrew module when not in use.

Troubleshooting

Resetting the Device

If unresponsive, hold power button for 10 seconds. This does not erase data.

Restoring the Default Settings

Restore default configuration and activity profiles without deleting history. Select [Settings Icon] > System > Device Reset > Reset Default Settings.

Clearing User Data and Settings

Clear all user data, history, settings, and activity profiles to restore initial setup. Select [Settings Icon] > System > Device Reset > Delete Data and Reset Settings.

Maximizing Battery Life

  • Turn on Battery Save Mode.
  • Decrease backlight brightness or timeout.
  • Select Smart recording interval.
  • Turn on Auto Sleep.
  • Turn off Bluetooth.
  • Select GPS setting (e.g., GPS+GLONASS).
  • Remove unused wireless sensors.

Turning On Battery Save Mode

Extends battery life by adjusting settings, turning off screen during activity. Records GPS/sensor data less frequently, reducing accuracy. History is recorded when timer is running.

  1. Select [Profile Icon] > Battery Save Mode > Enable.
  2. Select alerts to wake the screen.

My phone will not connect to the device

Try restarting phone and device, enabling Bluetooth, updating Garmin Connect app, removing/re-pairing device, checking phone's Bluetooth settings (for Apple), ensuring proximity (within 10m/33ft), and using the app to add the device.

Improving GPS Satellite Reception

Sync frequently with Garmin Connect (via USB or Bluetooth). Connect to Wi-Fi for satellite data downloads. Take device outside to an open area, remain stationary.

My device is in the wrong language

Select [Settings Icon], scroll to the last item, then the sixth item, then your language.

Setting Your Elevation

Manually calibrate the altimeter with accurate elevation data. Select Navigation > [Map Icon] > Set Elevation. Enter elevation.

Temperature Readings

Device may show higher temperatures in direct sunlight, when held, or charging. Allow time for temperature adjustment.

Replacement O-rings

Available for mounts. Use Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) bands only. Order from buy.garmin.com or dealer.

Viewing Device Information

View unit ID, software version, regulatory info, license agreement. Select Setup > About.

Updating the Software Using Garmin Express

Requires Garmin Connect account and Garmin Express. Connect device via USB. Garmin Express sends updates. Follow on-screen instructions. Do not disconnect during update. Wi-Fi connectivity can also download updates.

Tables provide VO2 max. classifications by age and gender.

The speed sensor detects wheel size. Manually enter circumference if needed. A table lists common tire sizes and their circumferences.
