This manual provides installation and operation instructions for the Dual DC404iM receiver.
Installation
Preparation
Please read the entire manual before installation.
Before You Start
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Consult a qualified technician for instructions.
- Avoid installing the unit where it would be subject to high temperatures (e.g., direct sunlight) or where it would be subject to dust, dirt, or excessive vibration.
Getting Started
- Remove the trim ring from the unit.
- Remove 2 transit screws located on top of the unit.
- Insert the supplied keys into the slots and slide the unit out of the mounting sleeve.
- Install the mounting sleeve into the opening, bending tabs to secure.
- Connect the wiring harness and antenna. Consult a qualified technician if unsure.
- Certain vehicles may require an installation kit and/or wiring harness adapter (sold separately).
- Test for correct operation and slide the unit into the mounting sleeve to secure.
- Snap the trim ring into place.
Typical Front-Load DIN Mounting Method
This describes the standard method for installing a DIN-sized car stereo. It involves using a mounting sleeve that fits into the dashboard opening, with the head unit sliding into this sleeve. Removal keys are used to release the head unit from the sleeve.
Wiring Diagram
The rear of the unit features various connectors for wiring:
- Antenna Connector: For connecting the vehicle's antenna.
- BLUE (Remote Turn-On): Connect to amplifier or power antenna. Insulate wire if not used.
- BLACK (Ground): Connect to vehicle chassis ground.
- RED (Accessory): Connect to existing ignition circuit or switched 12-volt source.
- YELLOW (Memory): Connect to battery circuit or constant 12-volt source.
- Speaker Outputs: Connections for front and rear left/right speakers (Gray/Black for Left Front -, Gray for Left Front +, Violet/Black for Right Rear -, Violet for Right Rear +, White/Black for Left Rear -, White for Left Rear +).
Fuse Information
The DC404iM uses one 10-amp ATM fuse, located beside the wiring connector. When replacing the fuse, ensure the new fuse is the correct type and amperage to prevent damage to the radio.
Control Locations - Receiver
The front panel of the DC404iM features numerous controls:
- 1 Release: Releases the detachable faceplate.
- 2 Power: Turns the unit on/off.
- 3 Volume / Select: Adjusts volume or selects options.
- 4 Audio / Menu: Accesses audio settings or menus.
- 5 USB Port: For connecting USB devices.
- 6 Eject: Ejects CDs.
- 7 Auxiliary Input: 3.5mm front panel input for audio devices.
- 8 Preset 6 / Folder Up / Thumbs Up: Functions as a preset station, folder navigation up, or thumbs up for Pandora.
- 9 Preset 5 / Folder Down / Thumbs Down: Functions as a preset station, folder navigation down, or thumbs down for Pandora.
- 10 Preset 4 / Play / Pause: Functions as a preset station or play/pause control.
- 11 Preset 3 / Intro: Functions as a preset station or for intro playback.
- 12 Preset 2 / Random: Functions as a preset station or for random playback.
- 13 Preset 1 / Repeat: Functions as a preset station or for repeat playback.
- 14 Display: Cycles through display information (clock, track info, etc.).
- 15 Tune / Track Up: Tunes radio frequencies or advances tracks.
- 16 Tune / Track Down: Tunes radio frequencies or goes back tracks.
- 17 Band / Go Back: Selects radio bands (AM/FM) or goes back in menus.
- 18 Mode: Selects audio sources (AM, FM, CD, USB, iPod, Pandora).
- 19 Mute: Mutes audio output.
General Operation
- Power On/Off: Press the Power button (2) or any other button (except EJECT) to turn the unit on. Press the Power button again to turn it off.
- Mode: Press the MODE button (18) to select between AM/FM, CD player, auxiliary input, USB, and iPod/iPhone modes. Modes are shown on the display. Note: CD, USB, and iPod modes will only appear if a CD is inserted or a USB/iPod device is connected.
- Auxiliary Input: The DC404iM has a 3.5mm port on the front panel for connecting external audio devices like MP3 players.
- Volume: Adjust volume using the volume knob (3) from 00 to 30.
- Display: Press the DISP button (14) to cycle through display information such as clock, radio frequency, CD track/elapsed time, or MP3/WMA song information.
- Reset: Press the RESET button (located behind the front panel) upon initial installation or if abnormal operation occurs.
- Set the Clock: With the unit on, press and hold DISP (14) until the clock flashes. Use TUNE/TRACK UP (15) and TUNE/TRACK DOWN (16) to adjust hours and minutes. Press DISP (14) momentarily to save.
- 12/24-hour Clock: The clock displays in 12-hour AM/PM format for USA frequency spacing and 24-hour format for European frequency spacing.
- Setup Menu: Press and hold AUDIO/MENU (4) for over 3 seconds to access the setup menu. Press AUDIO/MENU (4) momentarily to select menu functions and use the volume knob (3) to adjust or activate.

Audio Settings
Press AUDIO/MENU (4) to select between Bass, Treble, Balance, Fader, EQ, Loudness, and Source Volume Level.
- Bass: Adjust Bass level from -6 to +6.
- Treble: Adjust Treble level from -6 to +6.
- Balance: Adjust balance from BAL LEFT 12 to BAL RIGHT 12. BAL EVEN is equal balance.
- Fader: Adjust fader from FADER FRONT 12 to FADER REAR 12. FADER EVEN is equal fader.
- EQ: Cycle through equalization curves: FLAT (default), POP, JAZZ, CLASSIC, BEAT, ROCK, and USER. Bass/Treble adjustments are saved as USER.
- Loudness: Toggle LOUD ON/OFF.
- Source Volume Level: Adjust gain for each audio source (AM, FM, CD, AUX, iPod, Pandora, USB) to match relative volumes. Press AUDIO/MENU (4) until SRC LEVEL appears, then use the volume knob (3) to adjust (-3 to +3).
AM/FM Tuner Operation
- Seek Tuning: Press TUNE/TRACK UP (15) or TUNE/TRACK DOWN (16) for over one second to seek the next strong station.
- Manual Tuning: Press TUNE/TRACK UP (15) or TUNE/TRACK DOWN (16) momentarily to change frequency one step at a time. Press and hold to advance quickly.
- Band: Press BAND (17) to select between FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2 bands.
- Storing and Recalling Station Presets: Up to 18 FM and 12 AM stations can be stored. Select the desired band and station, then press and hold a preset button (1-6) for over 2 seconds. The preset number will appear on the display. Recall by pressing the corresponding preset button.
Motion Control
Motion control allows using hand gestures to control basic functions like play/pause, volume, and track skipping.
- In Tuner Mode: Swipe hand up across the sensor to increase volume, down to decrease volume, right to seek up, left to seek down. Place hand over sensor to mute audio.
- In CD, USB, and iPod Mode: Swipe hand up to increase volume, down to decrease volume, right to skip to the next track, left to return to the previous track. Place hand over sensor to pause/play the track.
Note: Motion control may not work properly with large USB flash drives or USB cables. A low-profile USB flash drive is recommended.
CD Player Operation
- Insert CD: Insert CD with label facing up. Playback begins automatically.
- Eject CD: Press EJECT (6). The unit returns to the previous mode. If the disc is not removed within 10 seconds, it reloads. Ejection is possible even when the unit is off.
- Track Select: Press TRACK UP (15) to skip to the next track. Press TRACK DOWN (16) to return to the beginning of the current track. Pressing TRACK DOWN (16) again skips to the beginning of the previous track.
- Fast Forward and Reverse: Press and hold TRACK UP (15) or TRACK DOWN (16) to fast forward or reverse a track.
- Pause: Press PAUSE/PLAY (10) to temporarily stop playback. Press again to resume.
- Intro: Press INT (11) to enter the Intro menu. Use the volume knob (3) to select OFF (cancel) or ALL (play first 10 seconds of each track).
- Repeat: Press RPT (13) to enter the Repeat menu. Use the volume knob (3) to select ALL (play all tracks) or TRACK (repeat selected track).
- Random: Press RDM (12) to enter the Random menu. Use the volume knob (3) to select OFF (cancel), ALL (play all tracks in random order), or FOLDER (play all tracks in a selected folder in random order).
CD-R/CD-RW Compatibility
Some CD-Rs and CD-RWs may be incompatible depending on media type and recording method. CDs exposed to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, those with failed recording sessions, re-recordings, or copy-protected CDs not conforming to audio CD-DA red book standards may also be incompatible.
CD Player Operation - MP3/WMA Files
- Playing an MP3/WMA Disc: When inserted, "DISC READ" appears. Playback may take seconds depending on files/folders.
- Displaying Information: Press DISP (14) to cycle through song title, artist, file name, folder name, track number, and clock/elapsed time. "NO ARTIST" or "NO TITLE" displays if ID3 tag info is missing. "ROOT" displays for unlabeled root folders.
- Icons: SONG icon illuminates for song title, ARTIST for artist name, FOLDER for folder name, FILE for file name.
- Character Support: Track name, directory name, song title, and artist name support up to 32 characters. Song title and artist name display only if included in the MP3/WMA file.
- Synonymous Terms: File name = Track name; Folder name = Directory name.
- Folder/File Search Mode: Navigate through folders to find specific MP3/WMA files. Press SELECT (10) to enter search mode. A list of folders appears. Use the volume knob (3) to cycle through folders and SELECT to choose. File lists appear within folders. Press GO BACK (17) to return to the folder list or exit. Press SELECT (10) on the desired song for playback.
- Folder Access: Use `◀◀` (16) to select the previous folder and `▶▶` (15) for the next folder. Only available on discs with multiple folders.
- Repeat/Random/Intro for Folders: Options for repeating/randomizing/intro-playing files within folders are available for MP3/WMA discs with multiple folders.
- Media Compatibility: Compatible with CD-ROM (ISO), CD-R, CD-RW, CD-DA, MP3 data, WMA data. Not compatible with DRM-protected WMA, WMA lossless, Track At Once/packet writing, MP3 PRO, MP3 playlists, WAV.
- Playback Order: Based on file order on disc, starting from the root folder. Empty folders or those without MP3/WMA files are skipped.
- Compatible Recording Formats: ISO9660 levels 1 & 2, Yellow Book MODE 1 & 2 FORM 1, Multi session. Max files: 999, Max folders: 255, Max folder levels: 8. MPEG-1/2/2.5 Audio Layer-3.
- ISO9660 Standards: Max nested folder depth is 8. Valid characters: A-Z, 0-9, underscore. Supports Joliet, Romeo, and other ISO9660 conforming standards.
- Additional MP3/WMA Information: Features ESP (Electronic Skip Protection). Plays MP3/WMA files only when mixed with audio files. Only .mp3 and .wma extensions are supported. Do not play non-MP3/WMA files with these extensions.
- Sampling Frequency Rates: MP3: 8kHz - 48kHz; WMA: 32kHz - 48kHz.
- Transfer Bit Rates: MP3: 32kbps - 320kbps (constant/variable). WMA: 32kbps - 192kbps (constant/variable).
- MP3 Tag Display: Supports ID3 tags Version 1.0 to 2.4. Does not display Version 2.4 or greater tags. Invalid ID3 tags may show "NO SUPPORT".
- Recommended Settings: For MP3: 128kbps+ constant bit rate, 44.1kHz+ sampling frequency. For WMA: 64kbps+ constant bit rate, 32kHz+ sampling frequency.
USB Operation
- Connecting a USB Device: Connect a USB mass storage device to the USB port (5) using a USB sync cable. Playback begins automatically.
- Playing Music: "USB READ" appears upon connection. Playback starts after a few seconds. "NO FILE" displays if no valid MP3/WMA files are found.
- Track Select: Use `◀◀` (16) for previous track, `▶▶` (15) for next track.
- Fast Forward and Reverse: Press and hold `◀◀` (16) or `▶▶` (15) to fast forward or reverse.
- Pause: Press `▶/||` (10) to pause, press again to resume.
- File Search: Press SELECT (10) to enter search mode. A list of folders appears. Use the volume knob (3) to cycle through folders and SELECT to choose. File lists appear within folders. Press GO BACK (17) to return to the folder list or exit. Press SELECT (10) on the desired song for playback.
- Displaying Information: Press DISP (14) to cycle through file/folder name, song title/artist, track number, clock/elapsed time. "NO TITLE" or "NO ARTIST" displays if information is missing. Icons (SONG, ARTIST, FOLDER, FILE) illuminate when corresponding information is displayed.
- Folder Access: Use `◀◀` (16) to select the previous folder and `▶▶` (15) for the next folder. Only available on devices with multiple folders.
- Repeat/Random/Intro: Options for repeating (ALL, TRACK, FOLDER), randomizing (OFF, ALL, FOLDER), and intro playback (OFF, ALL, FOLDER) are available. Random mode is retained across power cycles.
- Character Support: Max 32 characters for track name, directory name, song title, and artist name.
- Media Compatibility: Compatible with MP3 data, WMA data. Not compatible with DRM-protected WMA, WMA lossless, MP3 PRO, MP3 playlists, WAV.
- Playback Order: Based on file order on the USB device, starting from the root folder. Empty folders or those without MP3/WMA files are skipped.
- Playback Capacity: Max files: 999. Max folders: 255 + root. Max files per folder/root: 999. Exceeding limits may cause improper function.
- USB Device Compatibility: Devices must be 'mass storage class' and formatted to FAT or FAT32.
- Additional MP3/WMA Information: Only .mp3 and .wma extensions are supported. Sampling Frequency Rates: MP3: 8kHz - 48kHz; WMA: 32kHz - 48kHz. Transfer Bit Rates: MP3: 32kbps - 320kbps; WMA: 32kbps - 192kbps.
- MP3 Tag Display: Supports ID3 tags Version 1.0 to 2.4.
Operation of iPod/iPhone
- Connecting an iPod/iPhone Device: Use the "dock connector to USB" sync cable to connect the device to the USB port (5). Playback begins automatically.
- Controlling a Device:
- Song Select: Use `◀◀` (16) for previous song, `▶▶` (15) for next song.
- Fast Forward and Reverse: Press and hold `◀◀` (16) or `▶▶` (15) to fast forward or reverse.
- Pause: Press `▶/||` (10) to pause, press again to resume.
- Repeat: Press RPT (13) to select ALL (all tracks) or SONG (selected track).
- Random: Press RDM (12) to select OFF, ALL (all tracks), or ALBUM (all tracks in selected album).
- Intro: Press INT (11) to select OFF or ON (first 10 seconds of each track).
- Music Search Menu: Press SELECT (10) to begin search. Select a category (Artists, Albums, Songs, Playlists, Podcasts, Audiobooks) using the volume knob (3) and SELECT (10). Navigate subcategories and then use the volume knob (3) to find the desired song/podcast/audiobook. Press SELECT (10) to play. Press GO BACK (17) to return to previous menus or exit.
- Displayed Information: Press DISP (14) to cycle through file/folder name, song title/artist, track number, clock/elapsed time. Character support for Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Name is up to 32 characters.
- Device Compatibility: Compatible with various iPod models (touch, nano, classic) and iPhone models (iPhone 5S down to iPhone 3G, and iPhone). Note: Some devices are not compatible with 'basic' control mode.
Pandora Operation
- Requirements: Requires an iPhone/iPod touch with data connection, Pandora App installed, an active Pandora account (sign up at www.pandora.com), and the USB sync cable.
- USB Connection: Connect iPod touch or iPhone to the USB port (5) using the USB sync cable.
- Changing Stations: Press SELECT (10) to display Stations Menu. Use volume knob (3) to sort by date or alphabetically. Press SELECT (10) to confirm, then use volume knob (3) to cycle through stations. Press SELECT (10) on the desired station for playback. Stations must be created on your Pandora account beforehand.
- Shuffle: Select "Shuffle" from the Stations Menu to shuffle songs from all stations.
- Skipping Tracks: Press `▶▶` (15) to skip the current song.
- Play/Pause: Press `▶/||` (10) to pause, press again to resume.
- Thumbs Up: Press `?` to indicate liking the track; Pandora plays more similar tracks.
- Thumbs Down: Press `?` to indicate disliking the track; Pandora will not play it again and avoids similar tracks.
Refer to www.pandora.com/everywhere/mobile for compatible devices. Note: Pandora requires an internet connection, and carrier/data charges may apply.

This warranty grants specific legal rights, which may vary by state. Dual Electronics Corp. warrants the product to the original purchaser against defects in material and workmanship for one year from the original purchase date.
Dual Electronics Corp. will, at its option, repair or replace defective products with new, renewed, or comparable products, subject to verification of the defect and proof of purchase. Replacement products are warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period.
Who is covered: Original retail purchaser of products bought from an authorized Dual dealer in the U.S.A.
What is covered: Defects in material and workmanship. Not covered: software, installation/removal costs, damage from accident, misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, improper installation, incorrect voltage, unauthorized repair, or damage during return shipment. What to do for Service:
- Check the troubleshooting guide first.
- If service is needed during the warranty period, pack the product securely (preferably in original packaging) and ship it via prepaid transportation with a copy of the original receipt to an authorized service center.
