Olympus C-5060 Wide Zoom QuickStart Guide
This guide provides step-by-step instructions to set up and begin using your new Olympus Digital camera.
For more detailed instructions, refer to the printed Basic Manual or the Reference Manual on the CD-ROM.
1. Unpacking the Box Contents
Gather your Digital camera and the parts shown in the illustration to complete the setup procedures.
Included items: Digital camera, Strap, BLM-1 Lithium ion battery, BCM-2 Lithium ion battery charger, CAMEDIA Master CD-ROM, USB cable (gray color), xD-Picture Card.
Also included: Basic Manual, AV cable, RM-2 remote control, lens cap & string, warranty card, registration card (not provided in some areas), and safety precautions booklet.
2. Preparing the Camera for Use
a. Charging the battery
The battery is not fully charged when purchased. Use the provided charger (BCM-2) to charge the battery. Align the battery terminals with the charger and slide it in.
b. Loading the battery
Open the battery compartment cover by sliding the lock. Insert the BLM-1 lithium ion battery with terminals facing the correct direction. Close the cover and secure the lock. To remove, ensure the camera is off, then slide the lock to release the battery.
c. Inserting the xD-Picture Card
The xD-Picture Card stores your pictures. Open the card cover, insert the card correctly into the rear slot until it locks, and close the cover securely. To remove, push the card in to unlock it.
Verification: Set the mode dial to and turn the power ON. The "No Picture" message should appear on the monitor. Turn the camera OFF.
d. Attaching the strap and lens cap string (OPTIONAL)
Attach the strap and lens cap string to the strap eyelets on the camera for easier handling.
3. Turning On the Camera
a. Turning the camera ON (SHOOTING MODE)
Remove the lens cap. Pull out and rotate the monitor. Align the red line with the mode dial. Turn the power switch to ON. The lens extends and the monitor turns on. Turn the camera OFF by turning the power switch to OFF.
b. Setting the Date and Time (OPTIONAL)
Set the date and time before first use for accurate file naming and image information. Set the mode dial to , turn the power ON, press , select MODE MENU, navigate to the SETUP tab, select the date format, and adjust date/time fields using the arrow pad. Press twice to set and exit.
c. Camera Diagram and Controls
Familiarize yourself with the camera controls:
- Front: AF sensor, AF illuminator, Flash, Lens, Remote control receiver, Microphone, Strap eyelet, Lens cap string attachment.
- Top: Hot shoe, Shutter button, Zoom lever, Custom button, Print button, Power switch, Mode dial, Control panel, Self-timer/Remote control button, Self-timer/Remote control lamp, Rotation button, Viewfinder, Diopter adjustment dial.
- Back: Monitor, Monitor button, QUICK VIEW button, Card access lamp, Card cover, OK/Menu button, Card button, Arrow Pad, Protect button, Erase button, Exposure compensation button, Metering button, AEL button, Battery compartment lock, Battery compartment cover.
- Bottom: Tripod socket.
- Side: USB connector, A/V OUT jack, DC-IN jack, Speaker.
TIP: The camera has a power-saving mode that activates after approximately three minutes of non-use.
4. Taking Pictures
a. Taking a Picture with the Monitor
Compose your subject on the monitor. Press the shutter button halfway to focus (green lamp lights steadily). Press completely to take the picture.
b. Taking a Picture with the Viewfinder
Compose your subject in the viewfinder. Press the shutter button halfway to focus. Press completely to take the picture. Turn off the monitor to save battery.
c. Zooming
Use the zoom lever to zoom in (toward T) or zoom out (toward W) for telephoto or wide-angle shots.
d. Flash Modes
Multiple flash modes are available:
- Auto-flash: Camera automatically decides if flash is needed.
- Red-eye Reduction Flash: Emits pre-flashes to shrink pupils before the main flash.
- Fill-in Flash: Flash always fires with every picture.
- Slow Synchronization (SLOW1, SLOW2): Adjusts flash for slow shutter speeds.
The green lamp or orange lamp indicates flash readiness (steady) or charging (blinking).
e. Number of Storable Pictures
The number of storable pictures depends on the xD-Picture Card capacity and selected image quality. Check the lower right corner of the monitor for remaining frames.
5. Viewing and Erasing Pictures
a. Viewing Pictures
Access Playback mode by setting the mode dial to or pressing the QUICK VIEW button. Use the arrow pad to scroll through images. Press the QUICK VIEW button again to return to shooting mode.
b. Erasing Pictures
Single-Frame Erase: Display the picture, press , select YES, and press . Pictures cannot be restored after erasing.
All-Frame Erase: Set the mode dial to , press , select MODE MENU, navigate to the CARD tab, highlight ALL ERASE, press , select YES, and press . This permanently deletes all unprotected pictures.
6. Connecting the Camera to a Computer
Ensure the camera is turned OFF before connecting. For Windows 98 users, install the "USB Driver for Windows 98" software first. Connect the supplied USB cable to the camera and computer. Set the mode dial to and turn the power ON to initiate communication.
TIP: Use the optional AC adapter for a consistent power supply during downloads.
7. Installing the Camera Software
Your Olympus Digital Camera comes with the CAMEDIA Master CD-ROM, which includes:
- CAMEDIA Master: For downloading, viewing, organizing, retouching, and printing photos and movies.
- USB Driver for Windows 98: Required for Windows 98 compatibility.
- Olympus Digital Camera Reference Manual: A comprehensive digital manual in PDF format.
