Installation
Install the PCI Express Card
WARNING! PCI Express Cards can be severely damaged by static electricity. Ensure you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching the PCI Express Card. Use an Anti-Static Strap or discharge static electricity by touching a large grounded metal surface for several seconds. Handle the PCI Express Card by its edges and do not touch the gold connectors.
- Turn off your computer and any peripheral devices connected to it (e.g., Printers, External Hard Drives).
- Unplug the power cable from the back of your computer.
- Disconnect any peripheral devices that are connected to your computer.
- Remove the cover from your computer case. Consult your computer's documentation for safe removal instructions.
- Locate an open PCI Express slot and remove the corresponding slot cover plate from the back of your computer case. This card works in PCI Express x1, x4, x8, or x16 slots.
- Gently insert the PCI Express Card into the open PCI Express slot and fasten the bracket to the back of the computer case.
- Note: If installing the PCI Express Card into a Small Form Factor or Low-Profile Desktop System, it may be necessary to replace the pre-installed standard Full-Height Bracket with the included Low-Profile Bracket.
- Return the cover back onto your computer case.
- Reconnect the power cable to the back of your computer.
- Reconnect all of the peripheral devices that were disconnected in step 3.
- Turn on your computer and peripheral devices.
Driver Installation
For Windows
- On your computer, open an Internet Browser and navigate to www.startech.com/ST1000SPEX2 or www.startech.com/ST1000SPEX2L.
- Click the "Drivers & Downloads" tab.
- Under "Driver(s)", download the driver for your operating system.
- Extract the contents of the driver package.
- Execute the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the driver.
For Linux Systems
- Extract the contents of the driver package.
- Follow the installation instructions on the accompanying README.txt file.
Verify Driver Installation
Windows
- On your computer, navigate to the Device Manager.
- Under "Network Adapters", right-click "Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller" and click "Properties".
- Confirm that the driver is installed and working as expected.
Linux
- Open a command line terminal.
- Run the command:
lsmod | grep r8168
- Verify that the driver is present in the command line output.
