The diagram shows a network card with four labeled components:
- 1. Bracket: Includes both Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets.
- 2. Link/Activity LED Indicators: These LEDs indicate network status. Solid Green means a link/cable is detected. Flashing Green indicates data transmission. Off means no link or cable detected. For Gigabit speed, a Solid Yellow light indicates a 1000 Mbps (Gigabit) link. Off indicates a 10/100 Mbps link or no link.
- 3. 2x Ethernet Port: Used to connect a Network Cable to the Network Card.
- 4. PCIe x1 Connector: Inserts into a PCI Express Slot.

Installation
Install the PCI Express Card
WARNING! PCI Express Cards can be severely damaged by static electricity. Ensure you are properly grounded before opening your Computer Case or touching the PCI Express Card. Wear an Anti-Static Strap if available. If not, discharge static electricity by touching a large Grounded Metal Surface for several seconds. Handle the PCI Express Card only by its edges and do not touch the gold connectors.
- Turn off your Computer and all Peripheral Devices (e.g., Printers, External Hard Drives).
- Unplug the Power Cable from the back of your Computer.
- Disconnect any Peripheral Devices connected to your Computer.
- Remove the Cover from your Computer Case. Consult your computer's documentation for safe removal procedures.
- Locate an open PCI Express Slot and remove the corresponding Slot Cover Plate from the back of your Computer Case. Consult your computer's documentation for safe removal procedures. This card is compatible with PCI Express x1, x4, x8, or x16 slots.
- Gently insert the PCI Express Card into the open PCI Express Slot and fasten the Bracket to the back of the Computer Case.
- Note: For Small Form Factor or Low-Profile Desktop Systems, you may need to replace the standard Full-Height Bracket with the included Low-Profile Bracket.
- Return the Cover to your Computer Case.
- Reconnect the Power Cable to your Computer.
- Reconnect all Peripheral Devices disconnected in step 3.
- Turn on your Computer and Peripheral Devices.
Install the Driver
- On your Computer, open an Internet Browser and navigate to www.startech.com/ST1000SPEXD4
- Click the Drivers & Downloads tab.
- Under Driver(s), download the Driver for your operating system.
- Extract the contents of the Driver Package.
- Execute the Installer and follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the Driver.
For Linux Systems
- Extract the contents of the Driver Package.
- Follow the installation instructions on the accompanying README.txt file.
Verify Driver Installation (Windows)
- On your Computer, navigate to the Device Manager.
- Under Network Adapters, right-click "Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller" and click Properties.
- Confirm that the Driver is installed and working as expected.
Verify Driver Installation (Linux)
- Run
lsmod | grep r8168
from the command line. - Verify that the Driver is present in the command line.
