*Note: A LUT-MLC may be required for proper function with CFL, LED, ELV, and fluorescent lighting. See page 2 of this guide or visit www.casetawireless.com/lutmic for installation instructions.

Installing Your Switch: Single-Pole Lights

This guide covers installation for lights with a single wall switch (single-pole). For lights with multiple switches (3-way), visit www.casetawireless.com/3way for complete instructions and videos.

Step 1: Turn Power Off at Circuit Breaker!

⚠️ WARNING: SHOCK HAZARD

May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at circuit breaker or fuse before installing.

Step 2: Remove Existing Switch from Wall

Remove the wallplate from the switch. Then, remove the switch and pull it away from the wall.

Visual Description: Diagrams showing wallplate removal and the switch being pulled out from the wallbox.

Step 3: Remove Side Sections (If Necessary)

For switches at the end of a gang (multiple switches in one box), do not remove the outside side sections. For switches in the middle, you may need to remove side sections to fit. Each switch has inside side sections that can be removed. A switch in the middle of a gang may have all side sections removed.

Visual Description: Diagrams illustrating which side sections to remove based on the switch's position in a multi-gang box.

Step 4: Disconnect Wires

Disconnect all three wires* from the existing switch.

*If your switch has more than 3 wires attached, refer to the "Installing Caséta Wireless in a 3-way switch application" video at www.casetawireless.com/3way.

Step 5: Connect the Switch

Wiring Instructions:

  1. Connect the bare copper (or green) "ground" wire from the wallbox to the green wire on the Caséta switch using a wire connector.
  2. Connect either of the remaining wires from the wallbox to one of the black wires on the Caséta switch using a second wire connector.
  3. Connect the remaining wire from the wallbox to the other black wire on the Caséta switch using a third wire connector.
  4. Cap off the blue wire on the Caséta switch using the small wire connector. (Note: The blue wire is only used in 3-way installations. See www.casetawireless.com/3way for more information.)

Step 6: Mount the Switch

Use the provided screws to mount the Caséta switch into the wallbox.

Step 7: Attach the Wallplate

Attach the adapter to the switch using the provided screws and snap on the wallplate. If installing next to other devices, ensure your wallplate has the correct number and size of openings.

Step 8: Turn Power On at Circuit Breaker

Restore power at the circuit breaker.

Important Notes & Load Information

Load Derating

Removing side sections reduces the switch's maximum wattage rating. See the charts below for maximum load information.

¹ The in-wall switch is UL Listed for use with all magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts.

² The maximum lamp wattage is determined by the efficiency of the transformer (typically 70%-85%). For actual transformer efficiency, contact the fixture or transformer manufacturer. The total VA rating of the transformer(s) shall not exceed the VA rating of the in-wall switch.

LUT-MLC Load Adapter

A LUT-MLC load adapter may be required for proper function with certain types of lighting (CFL, LED, ELV, fluorescent). Refer to the installation instructions for the LUT-MLC, available on page 2 of this guide or at www.casetawireless.com/lutmic.

Using Your Controls

With a Smartphone or Tablet (Smart Bridge Required)

The Caséta Wireless switch can be controlled from a smartphone when used with the Lutron Smart Bridge. If you are using the switch and remote control with the Lutron Smart Bridge, follow the instructions in the Lutron app. For other manufacturers' bridges, refer to their instructions.

Setup Steps:

  1. Download the Lutron® app from Google Play or the App Store. Search for "Lutron Caseta".
  2. Launch the Lutron app. The app will guide you through setting up your devices.
  3. Use the app to add devices, control them in multiple ways, schedule lights, and connect while away.

Pairing the Switch and Pico Remote Control

To pair the switch: Press and hold the "off" button on the switch for 6 seconds until the LED starts blinking.

To pair the Pico remote: Press and hold the "off" button on the Pico remote for 6 seconds until the lights flash 3 times (x3).

Repeat these steps to pair additional Pico remotes.

Replacing Light Bulbs Using FASS

Pull the FASS (Front Accessible Service Switch) out on the in-wall switch to remove power at the light socket.

Troubleshooting

SymptomProbable Cause and Action
Light does not turn on or in-wall switch LED does not light up.
  • Light bulb(s) burned out.
  • Breaker is OFF or tripped.
  • Light not properly installed.
  • Wiring error.
  • FASS on the switch is in the Off position.
Light does not respond to Pico remote control.
  • The switch failed to pair with Pico remote control; see "Pairing the switch and Pico remote control".
  • The switch is already at the light level the Pico remote control is sending.
  • The Pico remote control is outside the 30 ft (9 m) operating range.
  • The Pico remote control battery is low.
  • The Pico remote control battery is installed incorrectly.
Light stays on when the switch is turned off.
  • LED on in-wall switch is flashing or solid red color.
Proper bulb operation requires a LUT-MLC.

Technical and Regulatory Information

Cautions

Use only with permanently installed lighting loads or with general purpose fan loads.

Codes

Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.

Grounding

When no "grounding means" exist in the wallbox, the National Electrical Code (NEC) allows a control to be installed as a replacement if: 1) a nonmetallic, noncombustible faceplate is used with nonmetallic attachment screws, or 2) the circuit is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). When installing a control using these methods, cap or remove the green wire before screwing the control into the wallbox.
