Installation Walkthrough
Step 1: Prepare Frame Bolt Locations
Clean frame bolt locations as needed with lubricant and brush. Thread self-tapping bolts (Item 1) into locations as shown (4 places). Thread the bolt half-way or more while keeping the bolt perpendicular to the frame rail, then remove the bolts to be installed later. Note: Using a M12-1.75 tap may ease installation.
Visual Description: Images show cleaning frame bolt locations with a brush and lubricant, and threading self-tapping bolts into the vehicle frame.
Step 2: Fishwire Bolts and Spacers
Use the fishwire tool (Item 5) to insert one 1/2" bolt (Item 2) and one spacer (Item 3) into each frame rail. The fishwire technique involves inserting the coiled end through the hitch mounting hole and out an access hole, passing it through the spacer, threading the bolt into the coil, and pulling the fishwire to draw the bolt and spacer through the frame rail.
Visual Description: A diagram illustrates the fishwire technique, showing how to thread a bolt and spacer through a frame rail. Images show the process of using the fishwire tool.
Step 3: Mount the Hitch
Raise the hitch into location. Be careful not to push the bolts back into the frame. Secure the hitch with the provided M12 bolts (Item 1) and the 1/2" hex nuts (Item 4).
Visual Description: Images show a person lifting the hitch into position and attaching bolts and nuts.
Step 4: Torque Fasteners
Torque the M12 bolts to 90 ft-lbs. Torque the 1/2" hex nuts to 110 ft-lbs.
Visual Description: An image shows the completed installation of the hitch on the rear of a white Ford Transit van, with "CURT MFG" visible on the hitch receiver.
Installation Complete.
Towing Safety Information
Gross Trailer Weight/GTW: The weight of the trailer and cargo. Measure by putting the fully loaded trailer on a vehicle scale.
Tongue Weight/TW: The downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the coupler. It should be about 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. Measure using a scale.
Weight Carrying / WC: The total weight of the trailer and cargo. Never exceed the weight capacity of your trailer hitch.
Weight Distribution / WD: Used to balance cargo weight between vehicle wheels for better steering, braking, and level riding.
Sway Control: A device to reduce lateral trailer movements caused by wind, used in conjunction with a weight distribution hitch. Do not use on Class 1 or 2 hitches, or with surge brakes.
The document includes a chart titled 'How Much Can You Safely Tow?' which relates trailer types (e.g., Camper, Vacation, 5th Wheel) and hitch classes (Class 1-5) to maximum trailer weights. It also notes that Tongue Weight should be 10-15% of the Gross Trailer Weight. Users are advised to refer to their owner's manual for specific towing capabilities and limitations.
Ball Mount: The ball mount fits into the receiver hitch. Ensure a hitch pin and clip properly secures it before towing.
Visual Description: Diagram showing a ball mount with labels A (Rise), B (Drop), C (Hole Size), D (Length).
Trailer Ball: Connects the hitch to the trailer. Factors include the ball's gross trailer weight rating, mounting platform thickness (at least 3/8"), and hole diameter relative to the shank. Always check the nut and lock washer for security before towing.
Visual Description: Diagram of a trailer ball with labels A (Ball Dia.), B (Shank Length), C (Shank Dia.), D (Shank Rise).
Coupler: The component that fits over the trailer ball. Ensure the coupler size matches the hitch ball size and that the coupler handle is securely fastened. Safety devices like coupler safety pins and locks are recommended.
Safety Chains: Required and should be crossed under the trailer tongue to prevent the tongue from dropping to the road if separation occurs. Ensure enough slack for turning, and never let chains drag on the ground or attach them to the bumper. Safety chain strength ratings must meet or exceed the trailer's GVWR.
Electrical: Check that trailer lights, electric brakes, and break-away systems are working properly before towing. Wiring colors are provided for reference, typically working in conjunction with CURT manufacturing products.
Visual Description: A color-coded chart shows wiring identification for 4-way, 5-way, 6-way, and 7-way connectors, including colors like Green (Right Turn/Brake), Yellow (Left Turn/Brake), Brown (Taillights), White (Ground), Red (Electric Brakes), Blue (Auxiliary Power), Purple (Back-up Lights).
