Effects Explained

Whammy Effects

This group of effects bends your incoming signal up or down based on the selected setting. As the expression pedal moves, the signal changes from the original input pitch (toe up) to the pitch specified by the effect setting (toe down). These effects can be used in conjunction with the Drop Tune effect.

  • 2 OCT UP: Shifts your input note up two octaves.
  • 1 OCT UP: Shifts your input note up one octave.
  • 5TH UP: Shifts your input note up 7 semitones (a perfect fifth interval).
  • 4TH UP: Shifts your input note up 5 semitones (a perfect fourth interval).
  • 2ND DN: Shifts your input note down 2 semitones (a major second interval).
  • 4TH DN: Shifts your input note down 5 semitones (a perfect fourth interval).
  • 5TH DN: Shifts your input note down 7 semitones (a perfect fifth interval).
  • 1 OCT DN: Shifts your input note down one octave.
  • 2 OCT DN: Shifts your input note down two octaves.
  • DIVE BOMB: Shifts your input note down three octaves.

Harmony Effects

This group of effects adds harmony to your signal. The harmony note and the input signal are mixed as if two guitars were playing simultaneously. As you move the expression pedal, the harmony note changes between two intervals determined by the effect setting, while the input signal remains unchanged. These effects can also be used with the Drop Tune effect.

  • OCT DN/OCT UP: Bends harmony between one octave below (toe up) and one octave above (toe down) the input note.
  • 5TH DN/4TH DN: Bends harmony between a fifth (toe up) and a fourth (toe down) below the input note.
  • 4TH DN/3RD DN: Bends harmony between a fourth (toe up) and a minor third (toe down) below the input note.
  • 5TH UP/7TH UP: Bends harmony between a fifth (toe up) and a dominant seventh (toe down) above the input note.
  • 5TH UP/6TH UP: Bends harmony between a fifth (toe up) and a sixth (toe down) above the input note.
  • 4TH UP/5TH UP: Bends harmony between a fourth (toe up) and a fifth (toe down) above the input note.
  • 3RD UP/4TH UP: Bends harmony between a third (toe up) and a fourth (toe down) above the input note.
  • MIN 3RD UP/3RD UP: Bends harmony between a minor third (toe up) and a major third (toe down) above the input note.
  • 2ND UP/3RD UP: Bends harmony between a second (toe up) and a third (toe down) above the input note.

Detune Effects

This group of effects creates a copy of your input signal, shifts its pitch, and mixes it back with the original signal. As the expression pedal moves, the amount of detuned signal changes. With the pedal in the toe-up position, only the original dry signal is heard. As the pedal moves forward, the detuned signal mixes in. These effects can be used with the Drop Tune effect.

  • SHALLOW: The copied signal is slightly detuned relative to the original pitch.
  • DEEP: The copied signal is significantly detuned relative to the original pitch.

Drop Tune Effects

This group of effects transposes (shifts) your instrument up or down by a range of one octave in each direction for instant tuning with low or simulated tuning. Octave + Dry effects create a simulated 12-string guitar. These effects can be used in conjunction with Whammy, Harmony, or Detune effects.

Pitch Shift Up

  • OCT + DRY: Transposes guitar signal up one octave and adds a dry signal.
  • OCT: Transposes guitar signal up one octave.
  • 7: Transposes guitar signal up 7 semitones.
  • 6: Transposes guitar signal up 6 semitones.
  • 5: Transposes guitar signal up 5 semitones.
  • 4: Transposes guitar signal up 4 semitones.
  • 3: Transposes guitar signal up 3 semitones.
  • 2: Transposes guitar signal up 2 semitones.
  • 1: Transposes guitar signal up 1 semitone.

Pitch Shift Down

  • 1: Transposes guitar signal down 1 semitone.
  • 2: Transposes guitar signal down 2 semitones.
  • 3: Transposes guitar signal down 3 semitones.
  • 4: Transposes guitar signal down 4 semitones.
  • 5: Transposes guitar signal down 5 semitones.
  • 6: Transposes guitar signal down 6 semitones.
  • 7: Transposes guitar signal down 7 semitones.
  • OCT: Transposes guitar signal down one octave.
  • OCT + DRY: Transposes guitar signal down one octave and adds a dry signal.

Drop Tune Footswitch Operation

Two footswitches are located below the Drop Tune effect section. The DROP TUNE footswitch is used to engage and bypass the Drop Tune effect, as indicated by the LED above it. The MOMENTARY footswitch is used to temporarily engage or bypass the effect when pressed. This is designed to create hammer-on and pull-off style effects with chords that move from a transposed tuning to a normal tuning.

MIDI Functions

The Whammy DT features a MIDI input for receiving MIDI data. MIDI messages can select the Whammy or Drop Tune effect and set their active or bypassed state. MIDI CC messages can control the Whammy Expression pedal's position.

MIDI Channel

The Whammy DT can receive MIDI messages on any or all MIDI channels. To access or change the MIDI channel:

  1. Turn off the Whammy pedal's power.
  2. Press and hold the WHAMMY Effect footswitch while reconnecting power. One of the WHAMMY Effect LEDs will blink, indicating the currently selected MIDI channel.
  3. Using the reference table below, turn the WHAMMY Effect knob to select the desired MIDI channel.
  4. Press the WHAMMY Effect footswitch again to exit the MIDI settings menu.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the Whammy DT's controls with labels for MIDI channels 1-16, including an 'Omni' setting.

MIDI Program Changes

The Whammy DT uses MIDI Program Change commands to select effects, which can be set to active or bypassed.

Whammy Effects MIDI Program Change Mapping

Table Description: A table mapping MIDI Program Change numbers (e.g., 42, 41, 40...) to Whammy effect presets (e.g., HARMONY, OCT UP, 5TH UP...) and their Bypass/Active states.

Drop Tune Effects MIDI Program Change Mapping

Table Description: A table mapping MIDI Program Change numbers (e.g., 61, 62, 43, 44...) to Drop Tune effect presets (e.g., SHIFT UP, OCT + DRY, OCT...) and their Bypass/Active states.

MIDI Continuous Control

The position of the Whammy's expression pedal can be remotely controlled using MIDI continuous control messages. MIDI CC11 adjusts the expression pedal position. A value of 0 on MIDI CC11 corresponds to the toe-up position, and a value of 127 corresponds to the toe-down position.

Bypass Modes

The Whammy DT offers two bypass modes:

  • True Bypass
  • DSP Bypass

True Bypass Mode

The Whammy DT is factory-set to True Bypass Mode. In this mode, the circuit is completely bypassed when both the Whammy and Drop Tune effects are off. To return to True Bypass mode from DSP Bypass:

  1. Start with the Whammy DT powered off.
  2. Press and hold the MOMENTARY footswitch while powering the unit on.
  3. When the DROP TUNE effect LED blinks red twice, release the MOMENTARY footswitch. True Bypass will now be re-enabled.

DSP Bypass Mode

DSP Bypass allows the Drop Tune Momentary footswitch to transition smoothly between momentary on and off states, as the mechanical relay is removed from the circuit. To enable DSP Bypass mode:

  1. Start with the Whammy DT powered off.
  2. Press and hold the MOMENTARY footswitch while powering the unit on.
  3. When the DROP TUNE effect LED blinks green twice, release the MOMENTARY footswitch. DSP Bypass is now enabled. The DROP TUNE effect LED will light green when active. DSP Bypass remains active until True Bypass is re-enabled.

Expression Pedal Calibration

In the unlikely event that the expression pedal does not respond correctly or the pitch bend is inaccurate, it may need recalibration. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the Whammy pedal's power.
  2. Press and hold the WHAMMY Effect footswitch while reconnecting power. This enables MIDI and calibration settings. One of the WHAMMY Effect LEDs will blink, indicating the selected MIDI channel.
  3. Rock the Expression pedal fully forward (toe down) and then press the DROP TUNE footswitch. The DROP TUNE effect status LED will first flash red, then turn green, indicating calibration is enabled. If the LED remains red, ensure the pedal is fully forward and press the DROP TUNE footswitch until the LED turns green.
  4. Rock the Expression pedal fully back (toe up) and then fully forward (toe down) at least twice. The SHIFT UP LEDs will flash back and forth (from 1 to OCT + DRY) as the pedal calibrates.
  5. When finished, press the WHAMMY Effect footswitch again to exit MIDI and calibration settings and return to normal operation.

FS3X Footswitch Functions

The optional FS3X footswitch provides hands-free control over selecting Whammy and Drop Tune effects.

Diagram Description: An image of the FS3X footswitch with three buttons labeled 'MODE', 'DOWN', and 'UP'.

  1. Mode Switch: Selects which side (Whammy or Drop Tune) the FS3X Down/Up switches control. Pressing it once will cause the currently selected effect on either the Whammy or Drop Tune side to blink 3 times, indicating the Down/Up switches will now change effects for that side.
  2. Down Switch: Pressing this switch selects the next effect in a counter-clockwise direction on the Whammy or Drop Tune effect list.
  3. Up Switch: Pressing this switch selects the next effect in a clockwise direction on the Whammy or Drop Tune effect list.

Note: The FS3X will select effects on both sides regardless of whether the effect is engaged or bypassed. Use a 1/4" TRS cable for proper operation.
