Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of the new Whammy™ pedal. The 5th generation Whammy offers DigiTech's latest pitch shifting technology, classic Whammy pitch bending effects, and true bypass operation for both guitar and bass guitar. The added Classic/Chords switch toggles between the Whammy single note and chord modes, providing rock-solid pitch shifting effects. The Whammy interface includes the same classic Whammy pitch bending settings you've come to expect, plus some additional pitch bending settings from the Whammy DT.

Detailed Description

The Whammy pedal is extremely simple to set up and use. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Expression Pedal: Use this pedal to control the pitch bending amount of the selected Harmony, Whammy, or Detune effect. Tilting it forward (toe down) increases the amount of pitch bend, while tilting it backward (toe up) decreases the bend amount.
  2. Harmony LEDs: One of these LEDs will light up when a Harmony effect is selected. They add a dry signal to the effect signal for Harmony effects.
  3. Classic/Chords Switch: This switch toggles between the classic Whammy algorithm (Classic) and the modern algorithm of the Whammy DT (Chords). The Classic setting is ideal for single-note playing, while the Chords setting is for bending full chords.
  4. Selector Knob: Use this knob to select one of the Whammy, Harmony, or Detune effects.
  5. Whammy LEDs: One of these LEDs will light up when a Whammy effect is selected. No dry signal is added to the effect signal for Whammy effects.
  6. Detune LEDs: One of these LEDs will light up when a Detune effect is selected. The Expression Pedal controls the amount of the Detune signal mixed with the dry signal.
  7. Status LED: This LED lights up to indicate that the effect is engaged. It turns off when the effect is bypassed.
  8. Effect On/Off Footswitch: Use this switch to turn the Whammy, Harmony, or Detune effect on or off.
  9. Power Input: Connect the power supply to this jack. Do not use any power supply other than the one supplied.
  10. Output Jack: Connect this jack to another pedal's input or an amplifier's input.
  11. Instrument Input: Connect your instrument to this jack.
  12. MIDI Input: Connect an external MIDI device to this jack to remotely control the Whammy.

Setup and Connections

The Whammy pedal is extremely simple to set up and use. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Connect your instrument to the Whammy's input jack.
  2. Connect the Whammy's output jack to your favorite distortion pedal or amplifier.
  3. If using an external MIDI device for control, connect the MIDI device's MIDI OUT to the Whammy's MIDI IN.
  4. Connect the included power supply to an AC outlet, and the other end to the Whammy's power input.
  5. Turn on your amplifier and set the volume to your desired level.
  6. Use the Effect On/Off footswitch to activate the effect, push the Expression Pedal all the way forward (toe down), and then rotate the Selector Knob to choose your desired effect.

Connection Diagram Description: The diagram shows a typical setup: Guitar -> Whammy Pedal (Input, Output) -> Distortion Pedal -> Amplifier. It also shows the MIDI connection: MIDI Device (Out) -> Whammy Pedal (MIDI In), and the Power connection.

Effects

Whammy Effects

This group of effects bends the incoming signal up or down depending on the selected effect setting. As you rock the Expression Pedal forward and backward, the signal bends from its original pitch (toe up) to the pitch determined by the selected effect setting (toe down).

Harmony Effects

This group of effects adds harmony to the incoming signal. The harmony note and the input signal are mixed as if two guitars were playing simultaneously. As the pedal is rocked forward and backward, the harmony note bends between two intervals determined by the selected effect setting, while the input signal remains unchanged. OCT DN/OCT UP bends the harmony one octave below (toe up) and one octave above (toe down) the input note.

Detune Effects

This group of effects creates a copy of the input signal, shifts the pitch of the copied signal, and then mixes it with the original signal. As the Expression Pedal is rocked back and forth, the level of this detuned signal changes. When the pedal is up, you hear only the original dry signal. As the pedal is rocked forward, a greater portion of the detuned signal is mixed with the dry signal.

MIDI Functions

The Whammy features a MIDI input for receiving incoming MIDI data. MIDI messages can select a Whammy effect and set the effect to be active or bypassed. MIDI CC messages can then be used to control the Whammy Expression Pedal position.

MIDI Channel

The Whammy can receive MIDI messages on any or all MIDI channels. The following steps outline the procedure for accessing or changing the MIDI channel:

  1. Unplug the power from the Whammy pedal.
  2. Press and hold the Effect On/Off footswitch while plugging the power back in. One of the Effect LEDs will begin to blink, indicating the currently selected MIDI channel.
  3. Use the Selector Knob, referring to the reference chart below, to select the desired MIDI channel.
  4. Press the Effect On/Off footswitch again to exit the MIDI settings menu.

MIDI Program Change Mapping

The Whammy uses MIDI Program Change commands to select effects. Effects can be selected in either active or bypassed states. The following illustrations show the MIDI Program Change mappings for Classic mode and Chord mode.

Classic Mode Mapping: In Classic mode, the following chart shows the Program Change commands recognized by the Whammy, along with the corresponding effect setting and its state.

Chord Mode Mapping: When set to Chord mode, the following chart shows the Program Change commands recognized by the Whammy, along with the corresponding effect setting and its state.

MIDI Continuous Control

With MIDI Continuous Control commands, the Whammy's Expression Pedal position can be controlled remotely. MIDI CC11 sets the Expression Pedal position. A value of 0 for MIDI CC11 corresponds to the toe-up position, and a value of 127 corresponds to the toe-down position.

Expression Pedal Calibration

In the unlikely event that the Expression Pedal is not responding properly, or the pitch is not bending or returning to the correct pitch, it needs to be recalibrated. The following steps outline the procedure for recalibrating the Expression Pedal:

  1. Unplug the power from the Whammy pedal.
  2. Press and hold the WHAMMY Effect footswitch while plugging the power back in. This allows access to the MIDI and calibration settings. Wait until one of the WHAMMY Effect LEDs begins to blink (indicating the currently selected MIDI channel), then release the footswitch.
  3. Rock the Expression Pedal fully forward (toe down) and fully backward (toe up) at least twice. The 4 HARMONY LEDs will blink back and forth (from 5TH UP/7TH UP to OCT DN/OCT UP) as the pedal is rocked, indicating the pedal is calibrating.
  4. When finished, press the WHAMMY Effect footswitch again to exit the MIDI and calibration settings and return to normal operation.
