THERMASGARD® ALTM2 - EtherCATP
Surface-Contact Temperature Measuring Transducer / Pipe Surface-Contact Sensor
Product Description
The THERMASGARD® ALTM2-EtherCATP is a networkable surface-contact temperature measuring transducer with a detached sensor. It features Bluetooth capability and an EtherCATP port. The device is housed in an impact-resistant plastic casing with quick-locking screws and is available with or without a display and bar graph. The sensor is designed for measuring temperature on pipes, such as cold and warm water lines or heating circuits, for heating control purposes. The sensor is factory-calibrated.
This EtherCATP-enabled transducer is designed for industrial applications requiring high reliability. It offers easy integration into PLC systems via an ESI configuration file, diagnostic capabilities (e.g., communication error counters), advanced setting options, access to historical data (min/max values), and service interval determination for the sensor. Optional features include a large, illuminated, three-line display that can be individually programmed in both 7-segment and dot-matrix formats, and a seven-digit bar graph with freely configurable LEDs for graphical representation (e.g., as a traffic light indicator).

Installation and Commissioning
Mechanical Mounting Notes
Mounting must comply with all relevant regulations and standards for the measurement location, including welding instructions. Key considerations include:
- Adherence to VDE/VDI directives for technical temperature measurements and measurement set-ups.
- Compliance with EMC directives.
- Avoid parallel laying of current-carrying lines.
- Recommendation to use shielded cables, with the shielding attached to the DDC/PLC at one side.
- Ensure the thermometer's technical parameters match the actual site conditions, considering measuring range, permissible pressure, flow velocity, and avoiding oscillations, vibrations, and shocks (<0.5 g).
- The sensor element must not be kinked or squashed.
Safety Regulations
Devices must be used only for their intended purpose, observing safety regulations from VDE, state authorities, TÜV, and local energy supply companies. The buyer is responsible for ensuring compliance with building and safety regulations and avoiding hazards. S+S Regeltechnik GmbH assumes no warranty for faults or damages resulting from improper use or non-observance of instructions. Installation must be performed by authorized specialists only.
To prevent damage or errors, use shielded cables and avoid parallel laying with current-carrying lines. Adhere to EMC directives.
Commissioning Notes
The device is calibrated, adjusted, and tested under standardized conditions. For operation under deviating conditions, on-site manual adjustment during commissioning and at regular intervals is recommended. Commissioning is mandatory and must be performed by qualified personnel only.
If the sensor element's admissible load limits are exceeded, an adequate support structure must be used.
Important Notes
- Read these instructions before installation and commissioning.
- Use suitable weather and sun protection when installed outdoors.
- Connect devices only to safety extra-low voltage and under dead-voltage condition. Use shielded cables, avoid parallel laying with current-carrying lines, and observe EMC directives to prevent damage (e.g., from voltage induction).
- This device is intended solely for its specified purpose. Comply with all relevant safety regulations. The purchaser must ensure adherence to building and safety regulations and prevent all types of hazards.
- No warranties or liabilities are assumed for defects and damages arising from improper use. Consequential damages caused by device faults are excluded from warranty or liability.
- Installation and commissioning must be performed by authorized specialists.
- Only the technical data and connection conditions provided in the accompanying mounting and operating instructions are valid. Deviations from catalog representations are possible due to technical progress and product improvement.
- Any modifications made by the user will forfeit all warranty claims.
- Do not install near heat sources or their heat flow. Avoid direct sun or heat irradiation.
- Operating near devices that do not comply with EMC directives may affect functionality.
- This device must not be used for safety-critical applications such as personal protection monitoring or as an emergency stop switch.
- Housing dimensions may have slight tolerances.
- Modifications to this documentation are not permitted.
- Complaints are accepted only for complete devices returned in original packaging.
Display and Bar Graph Programming
The LCD display can be programmed via the EtherCAT interface. If only one output value is selected, the display is static. If multiple values are selected, they are displayed cyclically. The first line shows the value, the second line the unit, and the third line remains empty by default or can be customized. The entire display, including 7-segment and dot-matrix areas, can be individually programmed.
Upon applying supply voltage, the device performs a function test for the display and bar graph, taking approximately 30 seconds. If there is no bus connection, the display shows "ERR no link".
EtherCAT P LED Status Indicators
The status LEDs are located next to the cable connection:
- 1. LED (IN):
- Off: No connection to upstream EtherCAT module.
- Illuminated: LINK - Connection to upstream EtherCAT module.
- Blinking: ACT - Communication with upstream EtherCAT module.
- 2. LED (OUT):
- Off: No connection to downstream EtherCAT module.
- Illuminated: LINK - Connection to downstream EtherCAT module.
- Blinking: ACT - Communication with downstream EtherCAT module.
- 3. LED (RUN):
- Off: EtherCAT module in "Init" state.
- Quickly blinking: EtherCAT module in "Pre-Operational" state.
- Slowly blinking: EtherCAT module in "Safe-Operational" state.
- Illuminated: EtherCAT module in "Operational" state.
