Search Modes

The VANQUISH 440 and 540 offer four Search Modes, each with unique target separation and depth capabilities. Choosing the right mode helps maximize your finds.

Coin

Ideal for finding common modern coins in trashy locations like parks and beaches. Offers excellent target separation, rejecting ferrous targets and small non-ferrous trash like foil. Recommended for noisy environments.

Jewellery

Designed to recover precious jewellery of all types. Balances target separation and depth, making it a versatile all-rounder. Tones are adjusted to prevent fine gold jewellery from being classified as trash. Rejects only ferrous (iron) targets by default.

Relic

Optimized for detecting relics deep in fields and forests. Provides the best detection depth but with slightly reduced target separation. Ideal for finding long-lost treasures. Rejects all ferrous targets and small non-ferrous trash like foil by default.

Custom

A user-customizable mode for saving your preferred Search Mode and discrimination pattern. Changes made here are retained after powering off the detector. Default discrimination pattern rejects ferrous targets and a broad range of non-ferrous trash.

Detector Settings

Volume

Adjusts the loudness of target signals using the Volume Plus and Minus buttons. The Volume Level indicator on the display shows the current level.

Backlight (540 only)

The VANQUISH 540 features a red backlight for low-light detection. Press the Backlight button to turn it on or off. The Backlight Indicator confirms when it is active.

Sensitivity

Adjusts the detector's sensitivity to maximize detection depth. Always use the highest stable setting. The Sensitivity Level indicator shows the current level. To set, increase sensitivity until false signals occur, then reduce it just enough for them to disappear. Further reduction may be needed if ground noise is encountered.

Excessive Noise

Excessive noise can be caused by environmental electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources like power lines or mobile towers. If noise is a problem, try moving away from EMI sources, restarting the detector (allowing Automatic Noise Cancel to complete), or reducing the Sensitivity Level.

Iron Bias (540 only)

The Iron Bias feature helps classify large or complex ferrous targets. It is set to High by default. The VANQUISH 540 allows setting Iron Bias to Low, which can improve coin detection amongst dense ferrous trash. To set Iron Bias to Low, long-press the AllMetal button for approximately 2 seconds. The Iron Bias Indicator will appear. Long-press again to return to High (indicator off).

Pinpoint

Pinpointing helps quickly narrow down the exact location of a buried target before recovery. The difference in tone and volume aids in locating the target.

Pinpoint Visualization

When Pinpoint is enabled, the target signal strength is displayed on the Discrimination Segments. As the coil approaches the target, segments fill from the outside towards the center. When all segments are filled, the target is directly beneath the coil's center.

Locate a Target With Pinpoint

  1. Holding the coil away from the target, press and hold the Pinpoint button. The Pinpoint Indicator cross-hairs appear.
  2. Sweep the coil slowly over the target location, keeping it parallel to the ground, to calibrate the function.
  3. Listen for the loudest signal and watch the Pinpoint Visualization to locate the target's center. The function progressively masks the target response by reducing sensitivity with each sweep.
  4. When all segments on the Discrimination Scale are on, the target is directly below the coil's center.

Locate a Target Manually

This method requires practice and may be necessary when a target is surrounded by trash.

  1. Sweep the coil slowly across the target location, keeping it parallel to the ground.
  2. Listen for the loudest target signal response and mark the position.
  3. Move to one side and sweep the coil over the target at a right angle to your initial direction.
  4. Repeat step 2. The target is located where the two imaginary lines cross.

Depth Gauge

The Depth Gauge indicates the approximate depth of a detected target using a series of arrows. Fewer arrows indicate a shallower target, while more arrows indicate a deeper target. Accuracy can vary based on target type and ground conditions. The gauge remains on the LCD for up to 5 seconds after detection or until the next target is detected. For example, a US quarter might be indicated by a specific number of arrows representing its depth.

Wireless Audio (540 only)

The VANQUISH 540 supports standard Bluetooth headphones or earbuds. For optimal performance, Qualcomm® aptX™ Low Latency headphones, such as the Minelab ML 80, are recommended.

Turn Bluetooth On/Off

Press the Bluetooth button to toggle Bluetooth on or off. Long-press the button (2.5 seconds) to initiate pairing. If no connection is made within 5 minutes, Bluetooth will automatically turn off. The Bluetooth icon appears on the display when Bluetooth is On, showing connection status: Rapid flashing (pairing), Solid on (connected), Slow flashing (reconnecting).

ML 80 Wireless Headphones

The VANQUISH 540 Pro-Pack includes Minelab ML 80 Bluetooth® headphones. These are also available separately. Refer to the headphone instructions for detailed pairing and control information.

Target Identification

Target Identification Number

Target ID numbers range from -9 to 40. Ferrous (iron) targets typically range from -9 to 0. When a target is detected, its ID number appears on the display, indicating its ferrous or non-ferrous properties for quick identification. For instance, a US quarter consistently displays a Target ID of 29.

Discrimination Segments

Located along the top of the LCD, Discrimination Segments group Target IDs into zones. Each segment flashes when a target within its ID range is detected. Segments can be turned on (accepted) or off (rejected) to create Discrimination Patterns.

Accept/Reject

When an accepted target is detected, a target response and ID number are displayed. While the number is visible, press the Accept/Reject button to reject that specific target ID range. Targets within the rejected segment will no longer produce an audible response. Discrimination Patterns reset to default on power-up, except for the Custom Search Mode. Use the 'Store' function to save changes.

Discrimination Patterns

Discrimination Patterns are combinations of accepted (on) and rejected (off) segments, allowing the user to ignore specific target types. Preset patterns for Coin, Relic, and Jewellery modes reset on power-up; changes are saved to the Custom Search Mode.

Discrimination Pattern Edit

To edit a pattern: While not detecting a target, press the Accept/Reject button. `Ed` will appear on the Target ID field. Use the Discrimination Pattern Edit arrow buttons to navigate and select segments. Press Accept/Reject to toggle a segment on or off. The edit screen times out after 3 seconds of inactivity.

Store a Custom Search Mode

Any Search Mode can be saved to the Custom Search Mode slot, retaining current detector settings and discrimination pattern. Select and edit the desired Search Mode. Long-press the Search Mode button (5 seconds). `St` will appear on the Target ID Number display, accompanied by a confirmation tone. The Custom Search Mode icon and source Mode icon will flash twice. The newly stored Custom Search Mode becomes active.

AllMetal

The AllMetal function enables all Discrimination Segments, detecting all metal targets, including iron. This ensures no targets are missed but may result in detecting more trash. The Accept/Reject and Discrimination Pattern Edit buttons are inactive in AllMetal mode. Press the AllMetal button again to disable it and return to the last-used Discrimination Pattern.

Using AllMetal to Check a Target

AllMetal can verify if a non-ferrous detection also contains ferrous material. If a target yields both non-ferrous and ferrous responses when AllMetal is enabled, it might be a large iron object or a bottle cap. A repeatable non-ferrous response suggests it is likely a good (non-ferrous) target.

Creating Your Own Discrimination Pattern

Obtain desirable targets (e.g., local coins) and wave them over the coil at various heights to determine their Target IDs. Note that AllMetal may need to be enabled to ensure targets are not discriminated during this process.

Target Tone

Groups of Target IDs are assigned different tones (pitch) for broad classification without looking at the display. The VANQUISH 440 has three tones (Low, Mid, High). The VANQUISH 540 has five tones (T1 to T5). Tone break positions vary slightly per Search Mode.

Batteries and Charging

The VANQUISH Series is compatible with both rechargeable and non-rechargeable AA batteries. Warning: Never use a combination of battery types, as this may damage the detector or batteries.

Battery Run/Charge Times

Minelab rechargeable NiMH batteries offer approximately 8 hours charge time and 11 hours run time. Non-rechargeable alkaline batteries provide approximately 10 hours run time.

Battery Level

The Battery Level indicator shows the current battery charge. Note that battery discharge rates vary, making the indicator approximate.

Low Battery

With non-rechargeable batteries, the indicator flashes for about 20 minutes before automatic shut-down. With rechargeable batteries, a single battery segment remains for about 20 minutes before shut-down.

Automatic Shut-Down

When battery level is critically low, the detector automatically shuts down. `[Display: bF]` appears on the Target ID Number field 5 seconds before shut-down, accompanied by a shutdown tune. Some rechargeable battery types may not display `bF`.

Rechargeable Batteries

The VANQUISH 540 and 540 Pro-Pack include four rechargeable AA NiMH batteries and a charger. Use only the Minelab NiMH Battery Charger for NiMH batteries. Refer to the charger's instructions for detailed information.
