Introduction
This manual provides instructions for setting up and using the RCA RCRN03BE Universal Remote Control. It covers battery installation, programming methods, advanced functions, troubleshooting, and care.
Step 1: Install Your Batteries
Your universal remote requires two AAA alkaline batteries (not included).
- Remove the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the batteries, matching the batteries to the (+) and (–) marks inside the battery compartment.
- Push the battery cover back into place.
Battery Precautions:
- Do not mix old and new batteries.
- Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries.
- Always remove old, weak, or worn-out batteries promptly and recycle or dispose of them in accordance with Local and National Regulations.
Battery Saver: Your universal remote control saves battery power by automatically turning off if any key is pressed for more than 60 seconds.
Step 2: Program Your Remote
To use this universal remote with your home entertainment system, first program it to control your devices. There are four ways to program the remote:
- Direct Code Entry: Enter a code from the accompanying code list for your brand of device.
- Brand Code Search: Searches through codes for select brands of devices.
- Auto Code Search: Automatically goes through all codes for the device you're trying to control.
- Manual Code Search: Manually goes through all codes for the device you're trying to control.
Direct Code Entry
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find the Code List that came with the remote. Locate the section for the type of device and your brand. Keep the codes handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program (the POWER key illuminates). While holding the device key, enter the first five-digit code for your brand from the code list.
- Check the POWER key. If it stays illuminated, you're done. If it blinks four times and turns off, try again or use a different code.
Note: Test the remote with the device to ensure maximum functionality. If some features don't work, try a different code.
Brand Code Search
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Find your device's brand in the Brand Code list section of the code list. Keep the list handy.
- Press and hold the device key you want to program. While holding the device key, press and hold the remote's POWER key simultaneously. The POWER key turns off.
- Wait until the POWER key comes on and stays on. Release both keys.
- Press the number keys corresponding to your device's brand code number.
- Point the remote at the device. Press POWER and wait 2 seconds. If the device turns off, press STOP to store the code. If not, press POWER again every 2 seconds until the device turns off, then press STOP.
Note: If some features don't work, repeat the Brand Code Search and when the device turns off, continue pressing POWER until it turns back on, then press STOP.
Auto Code Search
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Press and hold the device key. While holding the device key, press and hold the remote's POWER key simultaneously. The POWER key turns off.
- Wait until the POWER key comes on and stays on. Release both keys.
- Point the remote at the device. Press PLAY and wait 5 seconds. If the device turns off, proceed to step 5. If not, press PLAY again every 5 seconds until the device turns off.
- When the device turns off, press REVERSE and wait at least 2 seconds. If the device turns on, press STOP to store the code. If not, press REVERSE again every 2 seconds until the device turns back on, then press STOP.
Note: If some features don't work, repeat the Auto Code Search and when the device turns off, continue pressing PLAY until it turns back on, then press REVERSE until it turns off again, and finally press STOP.
Manual Code Search
- Manually turn on the device you want to control.
- Press and hold the device key. While holding the device key, press and hold the remote's POWER key simultaneously. The POWER key turns off.
- Wait until the POWER key comes on and stays on. Release both keys.
- Point the remote at the device. Press POWER and wait 2 seconds. If the device turns off, press STOP to store the code. If not, press POWER again every 2 seconds until the device turns off, then press STOP.
Note: If some features don't work, repeat the Manual Code Search and when the device turns off, continue pressing POWER until it turns back on, then press STOP.
Tour of the Remote
The keys on this remote perform functions similar to your original remotes once programmed. The illuminated POWER key indicates feedback. Device keys (TV, SAT/CBL/STRM, DVD/VCR) set the remote to the correct mode. GUIDE and MENU access menus and guides. EXIT exits programming. Arrow keys navigate menus. The INPUT/DIGITAL key toggles video sources and separates channel numbers. The Backlight key ( ) illuminates keys in the dark.
Important: You must press the device key (e.g., TV) before operating a device.
Advanced Functions
Reassigning the DVD/VCR Key to Control a VCR
- Press and hold the DVD/VCR key.
- While holding, press and release the number 2 key. The POWER key turns off.
- Release the DVD/VCR key. The POWER key blinks twice. The key is now set to control a VCR.
- Program the DVD/VCR key for your VCR using one of the code search methods.
Volume Punch-Through
Allows VOL and MUTE keys to control TV volume when in SAT/CBL/STRM or DVD/VCR modes without exiting the current mode. This does not apply if the component has its own volume controls.
Channel Lock
Automatically sends channel commands to your satellite receiver, cable box, or digital TV converter when in TV mode.
- To turn on: Press and hold the device key used for changing channels, then press and hold the CH up key simultaneously. Wait for the POWER key to illuminate and stay on, then release both keys. Press ENTER to lock channels.
- To turn off: Press and hold the TV key, then press and hold the CH down key simultaneously. Wait for the POWER key to illuminate and stay on, then release both keys. Press ENTER to change channels with your TV.
Code Retrieval
Record programmed codes for future reference.
- Press and hold the device key whose code you want to retrieve. The POWER key illuminates.
- While holding the device key, press and hold the INFO key. The POWER key turns off. After three seconds, the POWER key turns back on.
- Release both keys.
- Press number keys 1-9, then 0. The number that causes the POWER key to blink is the first digit of the code. Record it.
- Repeat step 4 to find all five digits of the code.
Note: TV codes start with 1, VCR/DVR with 2, DVD with 3, and Satellite/Cable/Streaming with 5.
Troubleshooting
- Remote not operating device: Ensure correct mode, clear obstructions, check batteries.
- Cannot program remote: Check distance/angle, try different programming methods, ensure batteries are fresh. For combo units, program each part separately.
- Remote not performing commands properly: Ensure correct mode, check device readiness, avoid invalid keys, test different codes for maximum functionality.
- POWER key not lighting: Ensure correct mode, check for invalid keys, check batteries.
- Remote not changing channels: Ensure correct mode, press ENTER after channel number, clear obstructions.
- Device menu not appearing: Ensure proper connection and input selection, check remote mode. Menu access may not be supported for all brands; use original remote if needed.
