UPDATED BULLETIN
Bulletin No: 01-024/12
Subject: MAZDA SERVICE PROGRAM (MSP38) - ROUGH IDLE AND ENGINE STALL DURING LONG IDLING
Last Issued: November 07, 2012
This bulletin supersedes the previous bulletin 01-024/12 issued on 11/01/12. The WARRANTY INFORMATION has been revised.
Applicable Models/VINs
Models: 2012 Mazda3 (with SKYACTIV 2.0L)
Production Dates: September 25, 2011 through March 27, 2012
VIN Range: JM1BL1***C1 538770 - 636669
Description
On certain 2012 Mazda3 vehicles, when using high evaporative winter fuel, if the vehicle is stopped and idling for longer than 20 minutes, the fuel temperature inside the high-pressure fuel pump may increase. If the fuel temperature exceeds the fuel vapor temperature, the fuel supply to the injector might become insufficient, potentially causing:
- Rough idle and/or the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating with DTC P0191:00 (fuel pressure sensor circuit range/performance problem) stored in the PCM memory.
- Engine stall after prolonged idling, with potential difficulty restarting for a period.
Note: Under Mazda Service Program (MSP38), all dealer inventory and retailed vehicles within the specified VIN and production date ranges must be repaired per this bulletin. Before repair, validate applicability by performing an "eMDCS Warranty Vehicle Inquiry" and confirming "MSP38" campaign status is "OPEN".
Dealer Inventory
Repair all applicable vehicles currently in dealer inventory according to the procedures in this service bulletin.
Retail Vehicles
When an applicable retail vehicle is brought in for any repair or scheduled maintenance, perform an eMDCS Warranty Vehicle Inspection and check the status of MSP38. If the status is "OPEN", repair the vehicle per this service bulletin.
Consumer Notice
This bulletin's information and instructions are intended for skilled technicians. Mazda technicians use proper tools, equipment, and training for safe and correct vehicle maintenance. These instructions should not be performed by "do-it-yourselfers." Customers should not assume this bulletin applies to their vehicle or that their vehicle will develop the described concern. To determine applicability, customers should contact their nearest authorized Mazda dealership. Reproduction of this bulletin in any form without written permission is prohibited.
Repair Procedure
- Reboot the IDS to clear memory before reprogramming.
- Using IDS 81.03 or later software, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration following the "Module Reprogramming" procedure. Refer to the "Calibration Information" table.
- After PCM reprogramming, verify the repair by starting the engine and ensuring no MIL or abnormal warning lights are present.
Notes for Reprogramming:
- Always update the IDS tool first, then follow on-screen instructions to download the calibration file.
- It is not necessary to remove fuses or relays during PCM reprogramming when prompted by IDS. Doing so may cause PCM blanking or error messages.
- IDS displays calibration part numbers after programming.
- PCM calibration part numbers and file names may change with future IDS software releases or revisions.
- IDS will always display the "latest" available calibration P/N. Revised calibrations include all previously released calibrations.
- It is recommended to use the "Power Supply" mode in the Battery Management System during reprogramming to maintain battery capacity. If using a different charger, ensure it does not exceed 20 AMPS to prevent VCM damage.
- If any DTCs remain after clearing, diagnose them using MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 01-02.
- After PCM reprogramming, a road test to "relearn" KAM (Keep Alive Memory) is no longer necessary.
