Materials/Manufacturing
Your pedal boat is made of Ram-X™, a material known for its exceptional shock resistance and flexibility. Ram-X™ regains its shape after impacts, even after prolonged exposure to heat or sun, without affecting performance.
About Your Pedal Boat
- Respect capacity stickers on every pedal boat for safety.
- Sturdy polystyrene foam blocks are located between the hulls for extra flotation; do not remove them.
- Water-resistant bushings are self-lubricating and maintenance-free.
- Exclusive five-bladed, high-tech polymer paddle wheels provide excellent traction and propulsion.
- Clip-on, rib-reinforced paddles are impact-resistant and easily replaceable.
- Unique 90° crankshaft design ensures smooth and efficient pedaling.
- The steering linkage system is protected under the hull by two pontoons.
- An exclusive sealed trough hull aluminum steering mechanism allows for easy maintenance and prevents water infiltration.
- Pelican pedal boats are not recommended for saltwater use.
Transportation
- Use carrying handles for manual transport only. Do not use them to secure the pedal boat to a vehicle.
- Remove accessories like seat backs and cooler lids before transporting to prevent loss or damage.
Pre-launch Checklist
- Remove the tape holding the rudder in an upright position.
- Ensure the drain plug at the bow is securely in place before launching.
- Check that the cranks turn freely and are not obstructed.
- Verify all accessories are properly installed.
- All passengers must wear an approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
- Carry a buoyant heaving line (at least 15m/49ft) and a bailer or manual bilge pump.
- Ensure navigation lights are functional if operating after sunset or before sunrise.
Launching Your Pedal Boat
- Remove all transportation securing materials.
- If launching alone, lift the stern.
- Avoid dragging over rocks or sharp objects to prevent damage to the hull or rudder.
- Verify shore conditions to avoid damaging the hull.
- Step into the footwell area in the front of the boat when boarding.
- Always wear a certified PFD.
Mooring/Docking
- Moor away from rocks or sharp objects.
- Raise the motor before mooring if applicable.
- Moor in water deep enough to avoid damaging the hull.
- Use bumpers when mooring against a dock to protect the hull sides.
Safety Precautions
Read the following information carefully before using the pedal boat. Failure to follow these warnings may lead to serious injury or death.
- Weather Conditions and Water Levels: Use only in sheltered waters, lakes, and slow-moving streams. Avoid severe winds, rain, thunderstorms, choppy waters, strong currents, flood waters, or strong tides.
- Personal Flotation Device (PFD): Always wear an approved PFD and familiarize yourself with its use.
- Alcohol and Drugs: Never use alcohol, drugs, or other substances that may impair your coordination, judgment, or ability to operate the boat safely.
- Sound-Signalling Device: Keep a sound device in the boat at all times. Attaching it to your PFD is recommended.
- Standing Up: Standing up in the pedal boat may cause it to capsize. If the boat capsizes, it is generally safer to stay with the boat than to attempt to swim ashore.
- Ability: Assess your physical condition realistically. Start with shorter trips and paddle against the current on your return.
- Hypothermia: Dress appropriately for weather conditions and wear a wetsuit if necessary. Immersion in cold water can be fatal.
- Be Accompanied: Always go boating with someone. Inform someone of your plans, destination, and expected return time.
- Body of Water: Familiarize yourself with the body of water, including permitted hours, known hazards, and emergency assistance locations.
- Regulations and Laws: Always follow Coast Guard regulations and all applicable boating and safety laws.
- Slippery When Wet: The hull material is extremely slick when wet. Always wear slip-resistant shoes.
- Drain Plugs: Ensure the drain plug is securely in place before launching. Drain any accumulated water from condensation or seepage.
- Weight Capacity: Review and adhere to passenger and weight capacity limitations. Ensure proper weight distribution for balance and performance.
- Emergency Paddle(s): Always carry an emergency paddle or oar on board.
- Adult Supervision: Never allow minors to use the pedal boat without adult supervision.
- Weight Distribution: Ensure the load is evenly distributed for optimal performance and to prevent capsizing.
Care and Maintenance
Clean your pedal boat with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid harsh abrasives. Never paint the pedal boat, as paint will not adhere to the hull.
- Use caution if using a pressure washer. Do not use it inside the boat, as it could damage accessories and stickers. Only use on the hull below the waterline with the widest jet spray setting.
Storage
Short Term
- Pelican offers a mooring cover for protection against weather conditions.
- Periodically remove the drain plugs at the bow to allow any accumulated water from condensation to escape. To drain, remove the plug and stand the boat on its bow.
Long Term
- To store for extended periods, remove drain plugs and stand the boat on its bow to drain any water.
- Store the pedal boat right side up on level ground, preferably with a mooring cover.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on the pedal boat. If the plastic is bent, placing it in the sun will help it return to its original shape.
- Never store a pedal boat on sawhorses.
- Avoid prolonged or unnecessary exposure to the sun, as this may damage the finish.
