Important Safety Information
Retain for later use. To make optimum use of all the merits of the clinical thermometer, carefully read the operating instructions before use, retain them for future reference, and make them accessible to other users.
- The thermometer is intended solely for measuring human body temperature.
- The FT 15/1 thermometer is designed only for the measuring area on the human body stated in these instructions.
- Children should not use the device without supervision.
- Before each use, check the thermometer for signs of damage or wear. Do not use damaged or worn thermometers.
- Always wait for the acoustic signal indicating the minimum measurement time. Discuss the temperature readings with your family physician.
- The thermometer contains sensitive electronic parts. Protect it from impacts, bending, high temperatures, and direct sunlight.
- This thermometer features a flexible measuring tip for increased comfort and safety, especially for infants, sleeping individuals, or those with reduced consciousness. Do not bend the tip more than 90°!
- Operation in strong electromagnetic fields (e.g., near a mobile phone) may cause malfunctions.
- The thermometer performs a self-test upon activation. Regular accuracy checks are not required.
- Contact your family doctor promptly if temperature readings are abnormal.
- The device complies with EU Directive 93/42/EEC, the German Medical Devices Act, European Standard EN 12470-3, and European Standard EN 60601-1-2 regarding electromagnetic compatibility. Portable and mobile HF communication systems may interfere with this unit.
Notes on Electromagnetic Compatibility
- The device is suitable for use in all environments listed in these instructions, including domestic environments.
- Use may be limited in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances, potentially causing error messages or device failure.
- Avoid using the device directly next to or stacked on other devices to prevent faulty operation. If necessary, monitor both devices to ensure proper function.
- Using accessories not specified or provided by the manufacturer can lead to increased electromagnetic emissions or reduced immunity, resulting in faulty operation.
- Failure to comply with these guidelines may impair device performance.
Measuring Methods
Rectal Measurement (in the anus): This is the most reliable and accurate method. Carefully insert the thermometer tip 2-3 cm into the anus. Measurement time is approximately 10 seconds, indicated by an acoustic signal.
Oral Measurement (in the mouth cavity): Guide the thermometer tip into one of the heat pouches beneath the tongue, to the left or right of the tongue's root.
Axillary Measurement (in the armpit): This method is relatively inaccurate and not medically recommended.
Mode of Measurement | Recommended Time | Mean Divergence to Rectal Method |
---|---|---|
In the anus | Until acoustic signal | – |
In the oral cavity | Until acoustic signal | -0.4°C to -1.5°C (-0.7°F to -2.7°F) |
In the armpit | Until acoustic signal | -0.7°C to -2.0°C (-1.26°F to -3.6°F) |
Using the Thermometer
Press the On/Off switch briefly to turn on the device. A short acoustic signal confirms activation. The thermometer performs a self-test for approximately 2 seconds, during which all display segments are visible. Then, "Lo°C (Lo°F)" or the last measured value appears briefly, followed by the reference value of 37°C (98.6°F). The "°C" ("°F") symbol flashes, and "Lo°C (Lo°F)" is displayed, indicating readiness for measurement. During measurement, the current temperature is continuously displayed, and the "°C" ("°F") symbol flashes. Measurement concludes when a stable temperature is reached, signaled by 10 long beeps. The "°C" ("°F") symbol stops flashing, and the measured temperature is displayed. If the temperature is below 32°C (89.6°F), the "°C" ("°F") symbol continues to flash with "Lo°C (Lo°F)" displayed. Higher values are shown directly (e.g., 32.1°C / 89.9°F). A fever alarm (30 short beeps in 10 seconds) sounds for temperatures over 37.8°C (100°F). "Hi °C (Hi °F)" appears for temperatures over 43.0°C (109.4°F). Measurement time is significantly reduced compared to conventional thermometers, approximately 10 seconds for rectal measurements. Extending the measurement time beyond the signal may yield more accurate results. For armpit measurements, maintain the recommended time despite the signal. To prolong battery life, switch off the thermometer by briefly pressing the On/Off key after use. Otherwise, it will automatically switch off after approximately 10 minutes.
Memory Function
The last measured value is automatically stored. This value is displayed upon pressing the On/Off button, accompanied by a memory symbol (e.g., 37.5°CM / 99.5°FM).
Changing the Measuring Unit
The temperature can be displayed in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F). To change the unit, press and hold the On/Off button for more than 2 seconds during activation until the unit changes. The stored value will be displayed in the new unit.
Battery Replacement
The thermometer contains a long-life LR 41 (1.5V) battery, lasting approximately 2 years. Replace the battery when "T" appears in the bottom right corner of the display. Press the battery cover at the end of the device and pull it back firmly. Remove the old battery and insert a new one of the same type, ensuring the '+' sign points upwards. Replace the cover.
Dispose of used batteries through designated collection points, special waste disposal sites, or electronics retailers. Proper battery disposal is a legal requirement.
Battery Symbols for Hazardous Substances:
- Pb = Contains lead
- Cd = Contains cadmium
- Hg = Contains mercury
Notes on Handling Batteries:
- If battery fluid contacts skin or eyes, flush with water and seek medical attention.
- Choking hazard! Keep batteries out of reach of small children.
- Observe polarity (+/-).
- If a battery leaks, wear protective gloves and clean the compartment with a dry cloth.
- Protect batteries from excessive heat.
- Risk of explosion! Do not throw batteries into fire.
- Do not charge or short-circuit batteries.
- Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.
- Use only identical or equivalent battery types.
- Replace all batteries simultaneously.
- Do not use rechargeable batteries.
- Do not disassemble, split, or crush batteries.
Cleaning and Disinfection
Clean and disinfect the device before and after each use. The thermometer is 100% waterproof and can be immersed in water or disinfectant solution. Do not boil the thermometer. Use recommended disinfectants (e.g., 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, Gigasept FF, Lysoformin, Aseptisol) according to manufacturer instructions. Other cleaning agents or methods may cause malfunction or damage.
Storage and Disposal
Store the thermometer in its original protective cover when not in use. The accuracy of this thermometer has been carefully checked and it is designed for a long service life. For professional medical use, regular accuracy checks with appropriate means are required. For environmental protection, do not dispose of the device with household waste at the end of its life. Dispose of it at suitable local collection or recycling points in accordance with the WEEE directive.
