The Front Panel
The front panel of the PNI Escort HP 40 features several controls and indicators:
- 1. USB-C port: For charging mobile devices.
- 2. 6-pin microphone connector: Connects the microphone.
- 3. MODE/VOX/PA:
- MODE: Short press to switch between AM and FM.
- VOX: Long press to enable/disable the VOX function.
- PA: Short press the F key, then short press this key to enable/disable the PA function.
- Call MEM1 channel: Long press F key, then short press this key to recall the channel saved in MEM1.
- Save MEM1 channel: Long press F key, then long press this key to save the current channel in MEM1.
- 4. REPLAY/NRC/CTC/DCS:
- REPLAY: Short press to play RX records. Use Up/Down keys to navigate.
- NRC: Long press to enable/disable the Noise Reduction Circuit.
- CTC/DCS: Short press F key, then short press this key to disable (Off) or select CTCSS/DCS tone/code using Up/Down keys.
- Call MEM2 channel: Long press F key, then short press this key to recall the channel saved in MEM2.
- Save MEM2 channel: Long press F key, then long press this key to save the current channel in MEM2.
- 5. EMG/SCAN/DW:
- EMG: Short press to access emergency channels 9/19.
- ASCAN: Long press to enable/disable channel scan.
- DW: Short press F key, then short press this key to enable/disable Dual Watch (simultaneous monitoring of two channels).
- Call MEM3 channel: Long press F key, then short press this key to recall the channel saved in MEM3.
- Save MEM3 channel: Long press F key, then long press this key to save the current channel in MEM3.
- 6. F/MEM/MENU:
- F: Short press to enable/disable Functions option.
- MEM: Long press to enable/disable channel memory function.
- Call MEM4 channel: Long press F key, then short press this key to recall the channel saved in MEM4.
- Save MEM4 channel: Long press F key, then long press this key to save the current channel in MEM4.

- ASQ: Turn knob counterclockwise to activate ASQ.

Key Combination Functions
Key lock
Press and hold the EMG+F keys simultaneously to activate/deactivate the key lock function.
Country standard selection
Turn off the radio. Hold down the F/MEM key while turning the radio on again. Use the Up and Down keys to select the desired standard. Turn the radio on again.
Refer to the standards and frequencies table at the end of the manual.
Instructions for Use
On/Off and Volume
With the radio off, turn the On/Off button clockwise to turn it on. Continue turning in both directions to adjust the volume. Turn it counterclockwise until you hear a click to turn it off.
Channel selection
Press the Up and Down keys on the radio or microphone to change channels. Hold them down to scroll faster.
Transmission and reception
Press the PTT key on the microphone to transmit. The red LED around the ASQ/SQ button lights up, and the power level is displayed on the screen. Release the PTT key to stop transmitting.
ASQ/SQ/Monitor
- When the ASQ/SQ button is turned fully left (until a click), the radio enters automatic squelch mode (ASQ symbol appears).
- Turn it right for manual squelch mode. Continue turning until background noise disappears.
- Turn the button left, without entering ASQ mode, to activate the Monitor function.
Talkback
During transmission, press the MODE key to activate/deactivate Talkback. Use Up/Down keys to adjust volume (9 levels).
Channel scan
Long press the SCAN key to activate/deactivate channel scan. Use Up/Down keys to change scanning direction. The radio scans until a valid signal is found and stays on that channel for 5 seconds.
Pressing the PTT key during scan: If scanning, it transmits on the selected channel before scanning. If receiving or in pause, it transmits on the received channel. Scanning resumes 5 seconds after PTT release, unless another signal is registered.
CTCSS/DCS
Shortly press the F key, then the CTC/DCS key to enter the CTCSS/DCS interface. Use Up/Down keys to navigate codes/tones. Press EMG key to confirm.

Additional functions menu
To enter the menu: short press F, then long press F. Use Up/Down keys to navigate. Press EMG to enter a submenu. Use Up/Down keys to navigate submenu options. Press EMG to save and exit. Long press F to exit the menu.

- ANL (Automatic Noise Limiter): On/Off.
- HI-CUT: On/Off.
- Noise Blanker (NB): On/Off.
- Roger Bepp (RG BEEP): On/Off.
- Screen Brightness (DIMMER): 3 levels available.
- Backlight Color (COLOR): 7 colors available.
- NRC Level Setting (NRC SET): 5 levels available.
- VOX Level Setting (VOX SET): 5 sensitivity levels available.
- RG GAIN Level Setting (RF GAIN): 7 levels available, plus Off.
- Recording (REPLAY): On/Off. Records received signal only (max 20 RX conversations). To listen, short press REPLAY/NRC and use Up/Down keys.
- SWR: Radio enters transmit mode (4W±1W) without PTT. Measurement time up to 5 minutes. Adjust antenna. Continuous beep at SWR 1.0. Beep interval increases with SWR value. Beep volume adjustable. SWR value displayed (e.g., 2.5). Press PTT to exit SWR measurement.
