Battery Drain Protection & Setting Cut Off Voltage
The Hardwire Kit protects your dashcam from draining your vehicle's battery. If the battery voltage drops too low, the kit stops powering the camera to save enough power for starting your car. Once the battery charges and voltage rises above the set cut-off, the kit resumes normal function.
Setting The Cut Off Voltage:
Test and identify the minimum battery voltage required to start your car before setting the lowest cut-off. The kit has 4 protecting bands (switches) for voltage selection.
It is recommended to start with the highest setting and test, then move down to find a balance between battery power and recording time.
- For 12V Batteries: Protecting voltages are 11.8V / 12.0V / 12.2V / 12.4V. 12.2V is recommended for most users in general driving conditions.
- For 24V Batteries: Protecting voltages are 23.6V / 24.0V / 24.4V / 24.8V. 24.4V is recommended for most users in general driving conditions.
The ROVE R2-4K Ultimate 3-lead hardwire kit - Mini-USB automatically identifies the lead-acid battery type (12V or 24V) and protects your battery from draining.
Installation Guide
There are 2 main stages in the hardwire kit installation: Connecting input cables to your fuse box and grounding, and connecting the output cable to your dashcam.
What You'll Need For Installation:
- Hardwire Kit and Accessories
- Pliers
- Socket Wrench
- Electrical Tape
- Car Manual
Step 1: Locate Your Fuse Box
Locate your fuse box using your vehicle's Owner's User Manual or manufacturer's website. The fuse box is typically located behind a panel near the driver's footwell (example shown: Honda Civic). You may need to remove trim or open panels to access it.
Step 2: Find The Correct Fuse Slot For Your Hardwire Kit
Identify two fuse slots: one for constant power (RED wire) and one for ACC power (YELLOW wire, which provides power when the key is turned to ACC position). Note these slots for later steps.
IMPORTANT: Choose fuse slots rated between 10A - 30A. Avoid 5A or 7.5A fuses.
WARNING: Always refer to the vehicle owner's manual to avoid fuse slots related to safety features like airbags or stability control. Fuses for radio, sunroof, etc., are usually safe.
Step 3: Identify The Correct Type Of Fuse For Your Car
Match your car's fuses with the types shown: ATO (Standard), Mini, Micro2, or Micro. You can remove a fuse to compare or consult your car's manual.
Step 4: Identifying Input & Output Side Of A Fuse Slot
Use the included voltmeter to test each side of the fuse slot connector. The side showing voltage (e.g., +/-12.0V or +/-24.0V) is the INPUT side. The side showing 0.0V is the OUTPUT side.
Ensure the car key is in the correct position (ACC for ACC fuse, OFF for always-hot fuse) before testing.
Step 5: Inserting The Red And Yellow Fuse Taps
Orient the fuse tap correctly so that the INPUT wire connects to the INPUT side of the fuse slot, and the OUTPUT wire connects to the OUTPUT side. If the original fuse slot has a fuse, insert it into the lower slot of the Add-A-Fuse. If the slot is empty, install the Add-A-Fuse directly.
Step 6: Test The Installation For Yellow & Red Add-A-Fuse
Testing the YELLOW Add-A-Fuse:
- With the car keys OFF, touch the voltmeter to the aluminum end of the YELLOW Add-A-Fuse. There should be NO voltage reading.
- Turn the car keys to ACC position. Touch the voltmeter to the YELLOW Add-A-Fuse. It should read the incoming voltage (+/- 12.0V or +/- 24.0V), indicating it's receiving power through the ACC fuse slot.
Testing the RED Add-A-Fuse:
- With the car keys OFF, touch the voltmeter to the aluminum end of the RED Add-A-Fuse. It should read the incoming voltage (+/- 12.0V or +/- 24.0V), indicating it's receiving power through the always-hot fuse slot.
If any test shows incorrect readings, re-check previous steps.
Step 7: Connecting The Red And Yellow Piggyback Fuse Taps To The Hardwire Kit
Connect the RED and YELLOW wires securely to the piggyback fuse taps using a crimp tool or pliers.
Step 8: Locating A Ground Point
Connect the BLACK wire to a metal grounding screw or bolt on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a secure connection to a metal surface for proper grounding. Avoid grounding on plastic components.
Step 9: Test The Dash Cam
Plug the Mini USB cable into the dash cam. Start your vehicle to test the device and the 24-HR Auto Trigger Parking Mode feature.
Final Testing Steps:
- Turn ON the 24-HR Parking Mode Feature in the dash cam's settings.
- Test 1: Start the car. The camera should record continuously while the engine is running.
- Test 2: With the engine turned OFF and the key in the ACC position, the dash cam should continuously record.
- Test 3: Turn off the engine, lock the car, and remove the key. After a few seconds, the dash cam should automatically enter 24-HR parking mode (indicated by a blinking red LED).
- Test 4: Turn keys to ACC or start the engine. The dash cam should automatically go into continuous recording mode.
If all tests pass, the installation is successful.
Step 10: Tucking Up And Routing All The Cables Neatly
Run and tuck all wires neatly into your car. Tape or zip-tie excess wires out of the way to avoid obstruction and prevent them from being kicked or damaged. Ensure wires do not hang loosely, which could cause unsafe driving conditions.
WARNING: If your vehicle has side curtain airbags, be very careful when routing cables along windows. Ensure cables do not run past any airbag deployment zones.
Troubleshooting
Hardwire Kit Not Powering The Dash Camera
- Ensure fuses are correctly plugged into piggyback fuse cables and all cables are connected to the fuse box at the correct spots.
- Verify: RED WIRE to constant power fuse slot, YELLOW WIRE to ACC fuse slot, BLACK WIRE to a metal ground connection.
