For proper heat dispersal, do not install this unit in a confined space, such as a bookcase or similar enclosure.

Main Features

  1. High quality amplifier: Equipped with 30 W + 30 W (6 Ω/ohms) high quality amplifier circuits.
  2. Tone control and SDB control: Separate bass and treble controls, plus Super Dynamic Bass (SDB) circuit for powerful bass. Source Direct position bypasses SDB and tone control for a flat response.
  3. CD player for digital sound: Integrates a CD section for playback of CD-R/RW discs.
  4. Playback of MP3 and WMA files: Supports MP3 and WMA files from discs and USB memory devices. Displays track name and artist name.
  5. Low standby power consumption: Approximately 0.3 W in standby mode.

About the Remote Control Unit

Inserting the Batteries

  1. Slide the rear lid in the direction of the arrow and remove it.
  2. Load the two batteries properly as indicated by the marks in the battery compartment. ?
  3. Put the rear cover back on.

Operating Range of the Remote Control Unit

Point the remote control unit at the remote sensor when operating it. (Approx. 7 m range, 30° angle left/right).

NOTE: The set may function improperly or the remote control unit may not operate if the remote control sensor is exposed to direct sunlight, strong artificial light from an inverter type fluorescent lamp, or infrared light.

Select cables appropriate for the equipment being connected.

Using the AM Loop Antenna

Speaker Connections

Connect the left (L) and right (R) channels and the + (red) and (black) terminals on the set and speakers, ensuring correct polarity.

Steps:

  1. Peel off about 10 mm of the sheathing at the tip of the cable, twist the core wire, and terminate it.
  2. Turn the speaker terminal counterclockwise to loosen it.
  3. Insert the speaker cable's core wire into the base of the speaker terminal.
  4. Turn the speaker terminal counterclockwise to tighten it.

NOTE: Use speakers with an impedance of 6 to 16 Ω/ohms. Ensure speaker cables do not stick out of terminals. Never touch speaker terminals while the power is on to avoid electric shock.

Protector circuit

The protection circuit may activate due to core wire touching, high temperature, or internal temperature rise. If activated, unplug the power cord, check connections and ventilation, then reconnect. If the problem persists, contact a Denon service center.

Connecting the Playback Components

Control Dock for iPod

Use a Denon Control Dock for iPod (sold separately) to connect an iPod. Refer to the dock's operating instructions for setup. See "iPod® Playback" (vpage 22) for details.

Connecting the Recording Components

CD Recorder / MD Recorder / Tape deck

Connect audio output from the recorder/deck to the RCD-M37's AUX1/AUX2 inputs using appropriate audio cables.

Connections to Other Devices

Antenna Terminals

Connecting the AM loop antenna

  1. Push the lever.
  2. Insert the conductor.
  3. Return the lever.

NOTE: Ensure AM loop antenna lead terminals do not touch metal parts. Do not connect two FM antennas simultaneously.

Installing the DAB indoor antenna (UK Model Only)

Connect the supplied DAB indoor antenna to the DAB ANTENNA terminal.

USB Port

Connect a USB memory device to the USB port. The RCD-M37 cannot connect to a computer via USB.

Connecting the Power Cord

Connect the supplied power cord to the AC IN socket on the unit and to a household power outlet (AC 230 V, 50 Hz). Only use the supplied power cord. Ensure the unit is unplugged before connecting or disconnecting the power cord.

Once Connections are Completed

Turn the power on using the ON/STANDBY button (vpage 13).

Setup

Setting the Current Time (24-Hour Display)

To set the current time:

  1. Press ON/STANDBY to turn the power on.
  2. Press [CLOCK]. The current time is displayed.
  3. Press and hold MENU/SET for over 1 second to enter manual time setting mode. The "hours" display flashes.
  4. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set the "hours".
  5. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO]. The "minutes" display flashes.
  6. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set the "minutes".
  7. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO]. The current time is set.

To check the current time when the power is on: Press [CLOCK].

To check the current time when the power is set to standby: Press MENU/SET or [CLOCK]. Press again to turn off display.

Playback

Preparations

Turning the Power On

Press ON/STANDBY. The power turns on; press again to set to standby. The power indicator shows the status.

NOTE: Power is supplied to some circuitry in standby mode. For long periods away, unplug the power cord or turn off via ON/STANDBY. Stop playback before turning off power.

Completely turning off the power

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Note that time and function settings may be cleared if the power cord is left unplugged for an extended period.

Loading Discs

In stop mode, press <5> to open the disc tray. Press <5> again to close it. The tray also closes when <1/3>, [CD 1/3], or SOURCE is pressed.

NOTE: Do not place foreign objects in the disc tray.

Operations Possible During Playback

Adjusting the Master Volume

Turn or press [VOLUME df]. The volume level is displayed (00-45).

Input Source Switching

Press SOURCE to select the input source (CD, TUNER, AUX1/Dock, USB, PORTABLE IN, AUX2).

Adjusting the Tone

  1. Select item with SDB/TONE (SDB, BASS, TREBLE, S.DIRECT).
  2. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to adjust.

Display indicators: "SDB" shows SDB is on. "TONE" shows Bass/Treble are adjusted from 0 dB.

Turning the Sound Off Temporarily (Muting)

Press [MUTE]. "MUTE ON" is displayed. Press [MUTE] again to cancel. Mute also cancels if VOLUME is adjusted.

Switching the Display's Brightness

Press [DIMMER] to cycle through brightness levels (100%, 70%, 40%, OFF).

Listening With Headphones

Plug headphones into the jack. Speaker sound is automatically cut off. Be careful not to set the volume too high.

CD Playback

Playing CDs

Press <1/3> or [CD 1/3]. The "1" indicator lights, and playback begins. If the function is not CD, press [CD 1/3] or use SOURCE to switch to CD mode.

Stopping Playback

Press or [2] to stop playback.

Stopping Playback Temporarily

Press <1/3> or [CD 1/3]. The "3" indicator lights. Press again to resume playback.

Fast-Forwarding and Fast-Reversing (searching)

During playback, press and hold [6, 7].

Moving to the Beginning of Tracks (skipping)

During playback, press 8, 9. Pressing 8/9 skips tracks. Pressing 8 once returns to the beginning of the current track.

To Play the Desired Track (Remote Control Unit Only)

Press [NUMBER] (0-9, +10) to select the track. Example: Track 12: [+10], [2].

Playing Repeatedly <Repeat Playback>

Press [REPEAT]. Selectable modes: Single-track repeat (1), All-track repeat (ALL). Repeat off cancels repeat mode.

Playing Random Order <Random Playback>

In stop mode, press [RANDOM]. Tracks play in random order. Random play cannot be set or canceled during playback.

Canceling Random Playback

In stop mode, press [RANDOM]. The "RANDOM" indicator turns off.

Playback of MP3 and WMA Files

Downloadable MP3/WMA files can be stored on CD-R/RW discs and played. "Windows Media" and "Windows" are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.

About the MP3 and WMA Formats That Can be Played

CD-R/CD-RW discs created with ISO9660 level 1 format are playable. Maximum playable files/folders: 512 total, 255 per folder. File formats: MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3, WMA. Tag data: ID3-Tag (Ver.1x), META-Tag supported. Ensure files have .MP3 or .WMA extensions. Copyright-protected files cannot be played.

Playing MP3 and WMA Files

  1. Load a CD-R/RW disc with MP3/WMA files.
  2. Press [FOLDER MODE] to select "Folder Mode" (displays "FLD") or "Disc Mode" (no "FLD" display).
  3. Use [ui] to select the folder.
  4. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to select the file.
  5. Press <1/3> or [CD 1/3] to play.

Switching the Display

During playback, press [TIME/DISPLAY] to cycle through File name, Title/artist, and Title/album displays.

To Play Repeatedly

Press [REPEAT]. Selectable modes differ for Folder Mode (1FLD, FLD) and Disc Mode (1, ALL).

Setting random playback

Refer to "Playing Random Order <Random playback>" (vpage 14).

Programmed playback is not possible with MP3/WMA discs.

TUNER Playback

Tuning in Broadcast Stations

Connect antenna. Press [TUNER] or to select band (FM AUTO, FM MONO, AM). Use <8/, +/9> or [TU , TU +] to select station. "TUNED" indication lights when a station is received.

About the FM Broadcast Reception Status Display

The "ST" indicator lights for stereo reception. Select "FM MONO" for monaural reception if the signal is weak.

About Switching the Tuning Mode and Preset Mode

Use <8/, +/9> for tuning and preset operations. Switch modes before operating.

Automatically Presetting FM Stations (Auto Preset)

Up to 40 stations can be preset (FM only). Press [TUNER] to select FM AUTO/MONO. Press and hold MENU/SET. Press MENU/SET again to start auto presetting. Stations with weak signals may not be preset automatically.

Presetting FM/AM Stations Manually

Up to 40 stations (total AM/FM) can be preset. Tune to a station, press [ENTER/MEMO]. Select a preset number using <8/, +/9>, [CH , CH +], or [o p], then press [ENTER/MEMO].

Listening to Preset Stations

Use <8/, +/9>, [CH , CH +], or [NUMBER] (0-9, +10) to select the preset number.

Naming the Currently Tuned In Broadcast Station

Press [NUMBER] for the preset number. Press MENU/SET three times. Use [o p] to enter name mode. Use [ui] to select characters and [p] to set. Press ENTER/MEMO to finish.

RDS (Radio Data System)

RDS provides additional information from FM stations. Types include Program Type (PTY), Traffic Program (TP), Radio Text (RT), and Clock Time (CT).

Listening to DAB (For UK Model Only)

About DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting)

DAB offers crystal-clear digital audio and stable reception. It provides data services and multi-media content. Services are grouped into Ensembles and Service Components.

Setting DAB Band

Press ON/STANDBY. Press and hold MENU/SET. Select auto preset range (ALL BAND III or UK ONLY). Press MENU/SET.

Tuning in DAB Stations

Press or [TUNER] to select "DAB". The unit automatically searches. Use 8, 9 or [TU +, TU ] to select a station.

Auto Scanning Broadcast Stations

Set band to "DAB", press and hold MENU/SET, then select "AUTO SCAN" using 8, 9 or [o p].

Switching the Reception Information for the Currently Tuned in DAB Station

Tune to a DAB station. Press [TIME/DISPLAY] to cycle through Data Label Segment, Station Name, Program Type, Ensemble Name, Frequency, Signal Quality, Audio Information, and Data and Time.

Making the DAB Settings

Press [DAB/RDS]. Select menu item using 8, 9 or [o p], then press [ENTER/MEMO]. Options include Tuning Aid, Station Order (Multiplex/Alphanumeric), DRC, and DAB Version.

DAB Initialize

This resets all preset memory settings for stations and DABs. Set band to "DAB", press and hold MENU/SET, select "DAB INITIALIZE" using 8, 9 or [o p], then press MENU/SET.

iPod® Playback

Preparations

Set the iPod on the Denon Control Dock for iPod. Press SOURCE to select "AUX1/Dock". Press [REMOTE/BROWSE] to select display mode.

Listening to Audio

  1. Use [ui] to select the item, then press [ENTER/MEMO] or [p] to select the music file.
  2. Press [iPod 1/3]. Playback starts.

If the function is not AUX1/Dock, press [iPod 1/3] or use SOURCE to switch.

Remote control and iPod button relations

The remote control unit buttons correspond to iPod operations for playback, navigation, repeat, shuffle, and menu access.

Disconnecting the iPod

Press ON/STANDBY to set standby mode. Remove the iPod from the Control Dock.

Playing a Portable Audio

Connecting a Portable Player

Connect the RCD-M37's portable jack to a portable audio player using a mini-stereo audio cable.

Playing the Portable Player

Press SOURCE to select "PORTABLE IN". Play the portable audio player. Also read the player's operating instructions. Set the portable player's volume appropriately.

USB Playback

Playable USB Memory Formats

Files stored on USB memory devices in FAT16 or FAT32 format are playable. Maximum files/folders: 255 per folder, 255 total. File formats: MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3, WMA. Tag data: ID3-Tag (Ver.1x), META-Tag. Ensure .mp3 or .wma extensions. Copyright-protected files cannot be played.

Basic Operation

Connect a USB memory device. Playback starts automatically. Switch function to "USB" using SOURCE or press [USB 1/3].

To Switch the "Folder Mode" or "Memory Mode"

Press [FOLDER MODE]. "FLD" indicates Folder Mode; no "FLD" indicates Memory Mode.

To Switch the Folder or File During Playback

Use [ui] to select folder, or 8, 9 / [NUMBER] to select file.

Stopping Playback

Press or [2].

Stopping Playback Temporarily

Press <1/3> or [USB 1/3]. The "3" indicator lights. Press again to resume.

Fast-Forwarding and Fast-Reversing (searching)

During playback, press and hold [6, 7].

Playing Repeatedly (Memory mode only)

Press [REPEAT].

In stop mode, press [RANDOM].

NOTE: Denon is not responsible for data loss on USB devices. USB memory devices will not work via a USB hub. Denon does not guarantee all USB devices will operate or receive power.

Setting the Timer

Timer Playback

Everyday timer, once timer, and sleep timer can be set. Timer priority (highest to lowest): Sleep timer, Once timer, Everyday timer.

Setting the Timer

Everyday timer: Power on/off at set times daily.

Once timer: Power on/off once at set times.

  1. Press MENU/SET. "TIMER" is displayed.
  2. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to select timer play mode (ONCE or EVERYDAY).
  3. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set mode.
  4. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to select the function to be played (CD, TUNER, AUX1, USB, AUX2).
  5. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set function.
  6. (If TUNER selected) Use 8, 9 or [o p] to select preset number. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set broadcast station.
  7. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set "hours" for timer start time.
  8. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set hours.
  9. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set "minutes" for timer start time.
  10. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set minutes.
  11. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set "hours" for timer stop time.
  12. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set hours.
  13. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to set "minutes" for timer stop time.
  14. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set minutes.
  15. Use 8, 9 or [o p] to turn timer playback on/off.
  16. Press MENU/SET or [ENTER/MEMO] to set timer.
  17. Adjust volume using VOLUME.
  18. Set power to standby. Timer standby mode is set.

Canceling the timer

Press MENU/SET twice. At step 15, use 8, 9 or [o p] to turn off the timer indicator.

To check the timer settings

Press MENU/SET, then 8, 9 or [o p] to view settings. Press MENU/SET to exit.

To change the timer settings

Repeat the "Setting the Timer" procedure.

To clear the timer settings

Press MENU/SET, then 8, 9 or [o p] to select EVERYDAY or ONCE. Press and hold or [2] for at least 2 seconds.

If there is a power failure

Time and timer settings are cleared. Reset the current time, then reset the timer.

NOTE: When using Denon Control Dock for iPod ASD-3N/3W, leave its power on. Timer cannot be set for iPod function; switch to another function first.

Sleep Timer Playback

Automatically switches power to standby after a set time (up to 90 minutes in 10-minute steps).

  1. Select and play the desired function.
  2. Press [SLEEP] and select the setting time (90, 80, ..., 10, OFF).
  3. Press [SLEEP] while the "SLEEP" indicator flashes. The set time is displayed. The "SLEEP" indicator lights after about 5 seconds.

Canceling the sleep timer

Press [SLEEP] until "OFF" is displayed, or press ON/STANDBY.

To change the setting while the sleep timer is set

Press [SLEEP].

Checking the time remaining until the sleep timer starts

Press [SLEEP].

Other Functions

Convenient Functions

Auto Power On

When in standby, power turns on and operation starts if any button (except ON/STANDBY) is pressed. This includes opening the disc tray, starting playback of the selected source, or starting tuner playback.

NOTE: Auto Power On cannot be used with iPods.

Auto Function Selector Function

Pressing a button (e.g., [CD 1/3], [USB 1/3], [iPod 1/3], [TUNER]) switches to that function and starts playback.

Last Function Memory

Stores settings from before standby mode. Settings are restored upon power-on.

Resetting the Microprocessor

If the display is abnormal or operations fail, reset the unit. All settings will revert to default values.

  1. Unplug the power cord.
  2. Plug the power cord back in while pressing and holding <8/> and simultaneously.
  3. Press [CLOCK]. The "00:00" display flashes.

If "00:00" does not flash, repeat from step 1.

Using an Optimizing Filter

An optimizing filter suited for the SC-M37 speakers can be used.

  1. Press MENU/SET to select "SP OPTIMISE".
  2. Use <8/, +/9> or [o p] to select "ON" (optimized response) or "OFF" (flat response).
  3. Press MENU/SET to set.

NOTE: When the function is set to iPod, this cannot be switched.
