Powering On:

Press the Jog Dial and the Phone Button simultaneously for about 1 second. The blue LED will turn on, and you will hear ascending beeps.

Powering Off:

Short press the Jog Dial and the Phone Button simultaneously. The red LED will turn on briefly until the headset powers off completely, accompanied by descending beeps.

Charging:

The LED indicator is red while charging and turns blue when the headset is fully charged. Full charging takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Low Battery Warning:

When the battery is low, the blue LED in stand-by mode will blink red, and you will hear mid-tone triple beeps.

Pairing with Bluetooth Devices

Before first-time use with any Bluetooth device, the SMH5-FM(SMH5) headset requires a pairing operation. It can be paired with Bluetooth mobile phones, Bluetooth audio devices (MP3, GPS), and other SMH5-FM(SMH5) Bluetooth headsets. This pairing is a one-time process per device; the headset will automatically connect to paired devices when they are within range.

Mobile Phone Pairing:

  1. Turn on the headset and press the Phone Button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red and blue alternately, and you hear multiple beeps.
  2. On your mobile phone, search for Bluetooth devices. The headset will appear as 'SMH5-FM(SMH5)'. (Some phones may not prompt for a PIN.)
  3. Enter '0000' for the PIN.
  4. The headset can be paired as 'Handsfree' or 'Headset'. The 'Handsfree' profile is generally recommended for most mobile phones. Pairing as 'Headset' might limit the functionality of the SMH5-FM(SMH5) buttons.

Bluetooth MP3 Player Pairing:

The procedure is identical to 'Mobile Phone Pairing', with the SMH5-FM(SMH5) being paired as a 'Stereo Headset'.

If you are connecting both a Bluetooth mobile phone and a Bluetooth audio device simultaneously, ensure you pair the mobile phone as 'Handsfree' or 'Headset' and the audio device as 'Stereo Headset'.

Bluetooth GPS Navigation Pairing:

  1. You can receive Bluetooth voice instructions from a Bluetooth GPS navigation device.
  2. The pairing procedure is the same as 'Mobile Phone Pairing'. The SMH5-FM(SMH5) can be paired as either 'Headset' or 'Stereo Headset', depending on the Bluetooth GPS navigation device.
  3. Refer to your Bluetooth GPS navigation device's manual for specific details.

Pairing with Selective Profile: A2DP Stereo or Handsfree

For users with MP3 stereo music phones (like smartphones), you may need to selectively pair the SMH5-FM(SMH5) for A2DP stereo music only or for mobile phone hands-free only. This guide is for advanced users who wish to pair their smartphones with a single selective profile: A2DP Stereo for music or HFP for phone calls.

If this is not your first pairing with the mobile phone, you must clear the previous pairing lists on both the mobile phone and the SMH5-FM(SMH5). To clear the SMH5-FM(SMH5) pairing list, perform a factory reset as described on page 21. Consult your mobile phone's manual to clear its pairing list.

A2DP Stereo Music Only:

  1. Turn on the headset and press the Phone Button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red and blue alternately and you hear multiple beeps.
  2. Within 2 seconds, tap the Jog Dial. The LED will flash red, and you will hear double mid-tone beeps.
  3. On your smartphone, search for Bluetooth devices. The headset will be listed as 'SMH5-FM(SMH5)'.
  4. Enter '0000' for the PIN. Some smartphones may not require a PIN.

HFP for Phone Call Only:

  1. Turn on the headset and press the Phone Button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red and blue alternately and you hear multiple beeps.
  2. Within 2 seconds, tap the Phone Button again. The LED will flash blue, and you will hear multiple mid-tone beeps.
  3. On your smartphone, search for Bluetooth devices. The headset will be listed as 'SMH5-FM(SMH5)'.
  4. Enter '0000' for the PIN. Some smartphones may not require a PIN.

Pairing with Other SMH5-FM(SMH5) Headsets for Intercom Conversation

The SMH5-FM(SMH5) can be paired with up to three other headsets for Bluetooth Intercom conversations.

  1. Turn on the two headsets (A and B) you wish to pair.
  2. Press and hold the Jog Dial on headset A for 5 seconds until the red LED flashes rapidly.
  3. Press and hold the Jog Dial on headset B for 5 seconds until the red LED flashes rapidly.
  4. Tap the Jog Dial on either headset A or B. Wait until the LEDs on both headsets turn blue; the intercom connection is then automatically established. (Headset A is now paired with Headset B).

Diagrams illustrating pairing:

  • Pairing A & B: Shows headset A connected to headset B.
  • Pairing A & C: Shows headset A connected to headset B and headset C.
  • Pairing A & D: Shows headset A connected to headsets B, C, and D.

If a headset is paired with multiple other headsets for intercom conversations, the most recently paired headset becomes the 'First Intercom Friend'. The previously paired headset becomes the 'Second Intercom Friend', and the one before that becomes the 'Third Intercom Friend'. For example, if headset D is paired first, then C, then B, with headset A, then D is the First Intercom Friend of A, C is the Second, and B is the Third.

Using the SMH5-FM(SMH5)

Volume Adjustment:

Adjust the volume by rotating the Jog Dial. You will hear a beep at the maximum or minimum volume level. Volume levels are maintained separately for each function, even after powering the headset off and on. For instance, the mobile phone conversation volume remains unchanged even if you adjust the volume while listening to Bluetooth MP3 music, ensuring your preferred optimum volume for each function.

Mobile Phone Call Making and Answering:

  1. To answer an incoming call, simply tap the Phone Button.
  2. You can also answer calls by speaking loudly if the 'Voice Activated Phone Answering' function is enabled (refer to the next section for details).
  3. To reject a call, tap the Jog Dial while the phone is ringing.
  4. To transfer a call between the mobile phone and the headset, tap the Jog Dial during the phone conversation. A short or long beep will indicate the transfer to the phone or headset, respectively.
  5. To make a phone call:
    • Enter the number on your mobile phone keypad and tap the Phone Button. The call will transfer to the headset.
    • In stand-by mode, tap the Phone Button to activate your mobile phone's voice dialing feature (requires voice dialing capability on the phone; consult your phone's manual).
    • To redial the last number, double-tap the Phone Button in stand-by mode.

Enabling/Disabling Voice Activated Phone Answering (Factory Default: Disabled):

When enabled, this feature allows you to answer incoming calls by speaking a word loudly (e.g., 'Hello'). If disabled, calls can only be answered by tapping the Phone Button.

  1. To enable or disable this mode, press and hold the Phone Button for 8 seconds until the red LED flashes rapidly. After the first 5 seconds, the headset enters the Mobile Phone Pairing sequence; continue holding for another 3 seconds until the red LED flashes rapidly.
  2. To enable: Tap the Phone Button. The LED will show solid blue for 2 seconds, and you will hear double beeps.
  3. To disable: Tap the Jog Dial. The LED will show solid red for 2 seconds, and you will hear a single beep.

Intercom Conversation:

  1. Initiate an intercom conversation with an Intercom Friend by tapping the Jog Dial: single tap for the First Intercom Friend, double tap for the Second Intercom Friend, and triple tap for the Third Intercom Friend.
  2. To terminate an intercom conversation, single tap the Jog Dial. This will disconnect from any active Intercom Friend.
  3. If an incoming phone call occurs during an intercom conversation, you can choose to answer it after hearing the ring tone.
  4. If an intercom call is received during a mobile phone conversation, you will hear four high-tone beeps. You must end the mobile phone call to establish the intercom connection.

Enabling/Disabling Voice Activated Intercom (Factory Default: Disabled):

When enabled, you can initiate an intercom conversation with the last connected Intercom Friend by speaking loudly. A simple way to trigger intercom VOX is to blow into the microphone. If initiated via VOX, the intercom automatically terminates after 20 seconds of silence between participants. Manual initiation via Jog Dial requires manual termination by tapping the Jog Dial again. If this feature is disabled, the Jog Dial is the only method for initiating and terminating intercom conversations.

Voice Activated Intercom Settings

  1. To enable or disable Voice Activated Intercom, press and hold the Jog Dial for 8 seconds until the red LED turns on solidly. After the initial 5 seconds, the headset enters the Intercom Pairing sequence; continue holding the Jog Dial for another 3 seconds until the LED turns solid red.
  2. To enable: Tap the Jog Dial. The blue LED will flash for 2 seconds, and you will hear double beeps.
  3. To disable: Tap the Phone Button. The red LED will flash for 2 seconds, and you will hear a single beep.

Tips and Intercom Management

Tip: The Jog Dial is primarily for intercom functions, while the Phone Button is for mobile phone functions. For intercoms, the Jog Dial is used for positive actions (like enabling), and the Phone Button for negative actions (like disabling), and vice versa for mobile phone functions.

Intercom Failure:

If you attempt to start an intercom conversation with a friend who is already in a 3-way conference or on a mobile call, you will hear a low-tone double beep indicating a busy signal. Try again later.

Intercom Reconnection:

If your Intercom Friend goes out of range during a conversation, you may hear static, and the intercom may disconnect. The SMH5 automatically attempts to reconnect every 8 seconds, indicated by high-tone double beeps, until re-established. To stop reconnection attempts, tap the Jog Dial.

Stereo Music

By Bluetooth Wireless Stereo:

The Bluetooth audio device must be paired with the SMH5-FM(SMH5) following the 'Bluetooth Audio Device Pairing' instructions. The SMH5-FM(SMH5) supports the Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), allowing remote control of music playback if your Bluetooth audio device also supports AVRCP. You can adjust volume, play, pause, and skip tracks.

  • To adjust the volume: Rotate the Jog Dial.
  • To play or pause music: Press and hold the Jog Dial for 1 second until you hear a double beep.
  • To track forward or track back: Rotate the Jog Dial while pressing it clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Function Priority and Reset

Function Priority:

The SMH5-FM(SMH5) prioritizes functions in the following order (highest to lowest):

  • Mobile phone
  • Intercom
  • Stereo music by audio cable
  • Bluetooth stereo music

Lower priority functions are interrupted by higher priority functions. For example, stereo music is interrupted by an intercom call, and an intercom conversation is interrupted by an incoming mobile phone call.

Tip: For Bluetooth or 3.5mm audio cable stereo music, ensure the MP3 jack port is open. Unplug any audio cable to play music via Bluetooth.

Reset to Factory Default Settings:

  1. To restore the SMH5-FM(SMH5) to factory default settings, press and hold the Phone Button for 12 seconds until the LED shows solid red and you hear double beeps.
  2. Within 5 seconds of this action, press the Jog Dial to confirm the reset. The headset will restore factory settings and power off automatically.
  3. If you do not press the Jog Dial within 5 seconds, the reset attempt is canceled, and the headset returns to stand-by mode.

Fault Reset

If the SMH5-FM(SMH5) is not functioning correctly or is in a faulty state, you can perform a reset by using the pin-hole reset button located on the back of the headset main unit. Insert a paper clip into the reset pin-hole and press the reset button lightly for one second. The SMH5-FM(SMH5) will switch off and you will need to turn it on again to try using it. Note that this procedure does not restore the headset to factory default settings.
