Veridian Healthcare Deluxe Pulse Oximeter

Model #11-50D

Thank you for purchasing a Pulse Oximeter. With proper care and use, your Pulse Oximeter will provide you with many years of reliable service.

Introduction

Please read all instructions carefully prior to first use. The Pulse Oximeter measures user blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate information for sports and aviation activities in a small, portable, easy-to-use device. The Pulse Oximeter is intended for use by persons engaging in sporting and aviation activities. Persons who need SpO2 and pulse rate measurements due to a medical condition should not use this Pulse Oximeter and should consult with their physician.

Important Safeguards and Safety Information

Operating Cautions and Warnings

  • Keep unit and lanyard out of reach of children as the included lanyard may present an entanglement or choking hazard. Adult supervision is required; never leave children unattended with the unit or lanyard.
  • To avoid electrical shock, keep the unit away from water; never immerse the unit in liquid as this will damage it.
  • Do not handle the unit with wet hands.
  • Do not use the unit if it has been submerged in water or dropped.
  • If any abnormality in product function occurs, discontinue use until the unit has been examined; discontinue use and return to the manufacturer for review and replacement under the terms of the two-year warranty.
  • Do not shake the unit when in operation.
  • Do not disassemble the unit or attempt to repair it.
  • Never tie or tape the Pulse Oximeter to your finger.
  • Explosion hazard: do not use the product in an explosive atmosphere.

Storage Cautions and Warnings

  • Keep the unit out of reach of small children.

Cleaning Cautions and Warnings

  • Never immerse the device in water to clean as it may be damaged.
  • Follow the included instructions for cleaning the unit after each use; if the unit has not been used for an extended period, it should be cleaned prior to use.

How the Pulse Oximeter Works

The Pulse Oximeter works by shining two light beams into the small vessels or capillaries of the finger to determine the user's blood oxygen saturation percentage and pulse rate, which is then displayed on the Pulse Oximeter’s screen. The unit uses the term "SpO2" to identify the oxygen saturation level, displaying it as a percentage of full capacity (100%). Pulse rate is identified by the term "PR bpm" and is displayed as beats per minute.

Diagram Description: The device uses light beam sensors placed on the finger.

Digital Display Features

When in use, the Pulse Oximeter display reflects a 'live' reading of the wearer's current SpO2, PR bpm, and perfusion index.

Display Elements: The screen shows the SpO2 value (blood oxygen saturation), PR bpm (pulse rate), and PI (perfusion index). It may also display a waveform or pulse bar graph.

Screen Display Orientation

The Pulse Oximeter display can be adjusted to allow for easy viewing from any angle. While the unit is ON, rotating the finger while the oximeter is on and measuring will automatically change the display orientation.

Quick-Release Lanyard

The lanyard features a quick-release clip for easy release while in use. Safety Warning: The included lanyard may present an entanglement or choking hazard to small children. Adult supervision is required.

Battery Installation and Replacement

This unit requires 2 AAA batteries. Replace batteries when the Low Battery symbol appears or when the display does not turn on.

  1. Slide off the battery cover.
  2. Insert or replace 2 AAA batteries, ensuring to match the indicated polarity symbols. Always use new batteries.
  3. Replace the battery cover.
  4. It is recommended to remove the batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period. Please dispose of expired batteries according to local recycling regulations.

Using Your Pulse Oximeter

The Pulse Oximeter may be used while the user is seated, standing, or lying down. The user should not be walking or running during measurements and should take care not to excessively move the arm or hand where the oximeter is attached.

Prior to Use:

  • Keep the sensors clean to help ensure accurate readings. Before and after each use, carefully swab inside the unit with a soft cloth or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol. Do not pour alcohol directly on or into the unit.
  • Dirty hands or nail polish (especially dark shades) can affect reading accuracy. Wash hands and/or remove nail polish prior to use.
  • Suitable for use on any finger (excluding the thumb). The index or middle finger typically work best.

Measurement Steps:

  1. Squeeze the hinged end of the unit to open the measurement side.
  2. Insert finger nail-side up into the unit until resistance is felt. The unit should gently close below the first knuckle, aligning sensors with the fingernail and pad at the fingertip.
  3. Press the power button to turn the unit on. The screen will briefly flash a test display, then begin measurement.
  4. Solid dashes (– – –) will appear for a few seconds, then the display will show SpO2 and PR bpm measurements. The display orientation may rotate for best view.
  5. Avoid excessive movement during monitoring, as readings may fluctuate slightly.
  6. The pulse oximeter is for spot-checking and should not remain on the finger for more than a few minutes at a time.
  7. Remove the unit from the finger. It will automatically turn off after 5 seconds.
  8. Clean the unit as directed before storage.

Care and Maintenance

Before and after each use, carefully swab inside the unit with a soft cloth or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol. Do not pour the alcohol directly on or into the unit. The unit should be stored in a dry environment, within the ideal temperature range of -40°F–140°F (-40°C–60°C).

Troubleshooting

IssuePossible Cause/Solution
SpO2 or PR is not displaying a reading
  • User's oxygen level may be too low to measure; consult physician if reading cannot be obtained.
  • Reinsert finger and remain still.
SpO2 or PR display readout is unstable and fluctuating highly
  • Finger may not be inserted deep enough.
  • Finger may be trembling; try to remain still.
The unit will not turn on
  • Ensure batteries are properly installed.
  • Replace batteries.
  • If the unit still does not turn on, consult Customer Care.
Display screen goes blank
  • The unit automatically shuts off after 5 seconds if no finger is inserted.
  • Check batteries and replace if needed.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Information

The Pulse Oximeter is intended for use in a specified electromagnetic environment. Users should ensure it is used in such an environment.

Electromagnetic Emission

The device uses RF energy only for its internal function, resulting in very low RF emissions unlikely to cause interference. It is suitable for use in all establishments, including domestic ones connected to the public low-voltage power supply.

Electromagnetic Immunity

The device is designed to be immune to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and power frequency (50Hz) magnetic fields. It should be used on floors like wood, concrete, or ceramic tile, or if synthetic flooring is used, relative humidity should be at least 30%. Power frequency magnetic fields should be at levels typical for commercial or hospital environments.

Guidance for RF Communications Equipment

Portable and mobile RF communication equipment should be used at a recommended separation distance from the Pulse Oximeter, calculated based on the transmitter's output power and frequency, to prevent interference. For example, for transmitters up to 100W, separation distances range from 0.12m to 23.33m depending on frequency.

Note: Field strengths from fixed RF transmitters should be assessed via site surveys. If measured field strengths exceed compliance levels, observe the device for normal operation and consider reorientation or relocation if abnormal performance occurs.
