Description

Digital communication of analog sensing

TrueAlarm analog sensors provide an analog measurement that is digitally communicated to the host control panel using Simplex addressable communications. The control unit analyzes this data, determines an average value, stores it, and compares the sensor's present value against its average and time to detect an alarm or other abnormal condition.

Intelligent data evaluation

Monitoring each sensor's average value creates a continuously shifting reference point. A software filtering process compensates for environmental factors like dust, dirt, and component aging, ensuring an accurate reference for evaluating new activity. This minimizes false or nuisance alarms caused by sensitivity shifts.

Control unit selection

The control unit stores peak activity for each sensor to evaluate specific locations. The host control unit sets the alarm set point for each TrueAlarm sensor, allowing for adjustable sensitivity based on application needs.

Timed/multi-stage selection

Sensor alarm set points can be programmed for timed automatic sensitivity selection (e.g., more sensitive at night, less sensitive during the day). The control unit can also be programmed for multi-stage operation for each sensor.

Sensor alarm and trouble LED indication

Each sensor base's LED pulses to indicate communication with the unit. If the control unit detects an alarm, dirt, or other trouble condition for a sensor, the details are displayed on the control unit, and the sensor's base LED turns on steadily. During a system alarm, a trouble LED returns to pulsing to help identify the alarmed sensors.

Sensor base features

Sensor bases

4098-9792, standard sensor base

4098-9789, sensor base with wired connections

Supports 2098-9808 remote LED alarm indicator or 4098-9822 relay. The relay is unsupervised and requires a separate 24 VDC supply.

Supervised relay bases (not compatible with 2120 CDT)

Sensor base options

2098-9737, remote or local mount supervised relay

4098-9860, remote or local mount supervised relay

4098-9822, LED annunciation relay

4098-9832, adapter plate

Required for surface or semi-flush mounting to a 4-inch square electrical box and for surface mounting to a 4-inch octagonal box. This adapter plate can be used for cosmetic retrofitting to an existing 6-3/8 inch diameter base product.

2098-9808, remote red LED alarm indicator

Mounts on a single gang box.

Figure 2: Remote red LED alarm indicator. This image shows the 2098-9808 remote red LED alarm indicator, typically mounted on a single gang box.

Users can change TrueAlarm sensor types to meet location requirements, facilitating sensor substitution during building construction. For instance, heat sensors can be installed in dusty conditions without reprogramming the control unit, providing heat detection for building protection even if the control unit indicates an incorrect sensor type.

Description

TrueAlarm sensor bases contain integral addressable electronics that monitor the status of detachable photoelectric or heat sensors. The sensors transmit digitalized output to the system fire alarm control unit every four seconds.

Smoke sensors

4098-9714 photoelectric sensor

TrueAlarm photoelectric sensors utilize a stable, pulsed LED light source and a silicon photodiode receiver for low power smoke sensing. They offer three user-selectable sensitivities for special applications: 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1% per foot. Standard sensitivity is 1.25% to 3.1% per foot. The fire alarm control unit can adjust sensitivity for normal applications between 1.25% and 3.1% per foot.

Note: Fixed sensitivity settings above 1.0% per foot are not UL268 7th Edition compliant.

The sensor head design provides 360° smoke entry for response from any direction. Air velocity is generally not a factor due to its photoelectric operation, except when it impacts area smoke flow.

Figure 4: 4098-9714 photoelectric sensor with base. This diagram shows the 4098-9714 photoelectric sensor mounted in its base, with dimensions indicated: 4-7/8 inches (124 mm) diameter and 2-1/8 inches (54 mm) depth. An LED status indicator is also shown.

4098-9733 and 4098-9734 heat sensors

TrueAlarm heat sensors are self-restoring and provide rate-compensated, fixed temperature sensing, with or without rate-of-rise temperature sensing. The sensor measures local temperature for analysis by the fire alarm control unit. Rate-of-rise temperature detection can be selected at the control unit for 15°F or 20°F (8.3°C or 11.1°C) per minute. Fixed temperature sensing is independent of rate-of-rise sensing and can be programmed to operate at 135°F or 155°F (57.2°C or 68°C). The 4098-9734 sensor offers an additional 190°F (88°C) set point.

In a slowly developing fire, the temperature may not rise rapidly enough for the rate-of-rise feature. However, when the temperature reaches the rated fixed temperature setting, it triggers an alarm.

TrueAlarm heat sensors can be programmed as a utility device to monitor temperature extremes between 32°F and 155°F (0°C to 68°C), useful for freeze warnings or HVAC system problems. Refer to panel specifications for availability.

Figure 5: 4098-9733 heat sensor with base. This diagram shows the 4098-9733 heat sensor mounted in its base, with dimensions indicated: 4-7/8 inches (124 mm) diameter and 2-3/8 inches (60 mm) depth. An LED status indicator is also shown.

Figure 6: 4098-9734 high temperature heat sensor with base. This diagram shows the 4098-9734 heat sensor mounted in its base, with dimensions indicated: 4-7/8 inches (124 mm) diameter and 2-3/8 inches (60 mm) depth. An LED status indicator is also shown.

WARNING: In most fires, hazardous levels of smoke and toxic gas can build up before a heat detection device would initiate an alarm. In cases where Life Safety is a factor, the use of smoke detection is highly recommended.

Application reference

Sensor locations should be chosen after careful consideration of the physical layout and contents of the area to be protected. Refer to NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. For smooth ceilings, smoke sensor spacing of 30 ft (9.1 m) can be used as a guide.

For detailed application information, including sensitivity selection, refer to the 4098 Detectors, Sensors, and Bases Application Manual (574-709).
