DMP Troubleshooting Guide

Model: LT-1866

Introduction

This guide was created to assist DMP Technical Service Technicians help DMP dealers troubleshoot and fix any problems they may have with DMP equipment. Any text in this guide within a paragraph or step that is CAPATILIZED indicates keypad display text.

The Art of Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting a system is often more art than science. It's easy to overlook the obvious. Whatever your problem is, the cause is usually something simple, perhaps something overlooked in programming, or something physically incorrect, like a panel-jumper in the wrong position or an unplugged transformer. When troubleshooting at an installation site or on a service-call, the goal is to get the equipment working properly as quickly and efficiently as possible. Knowing what questions to ask first is key.

For example, for a 'dead' keypad (no display, no response):

  1. DC voltage at the keypad harness?
  2. DC output on panel terminals 7 & 10?
  3. Wire connections at panel terminals 7 & 10?
  4. AC input on panel terminals 1 & 2?

The order of these steps may vary depending on system layout.

Troubleshooting Tools

Digital Multimeter

A basic digital multimeter capable of measuring AC voltage, DC voltage, Ohms (Ω), and continuity is essential for basic troubleshooting. Always keep a spare battery for your multimeter.

DMP Tech App

The DMP Tech App (Automated Panel Programming) is a mobile tool for alarm industry technicians to add, edit, and view customers, systems, and app users. It allows for quick system programming adjustments and access to full programming and reporting options. A valid account username and password from a Dealer Admin administrator are required.

System Analytics

Each value is an average of data from the last two minutes. Tapping 'Refresh' updates the data. If a system has been online for over 24 hours, analytics show the most recent statistics.

Maximum Auxiliary Power Outputs

DMP panels provide 12 VDC auxiliary power for accessories like keypads, zone expanders, supervision modules, and intrusion detectors.

If the total auxiliary power demand is too high, the panel shuts down the auxiliary power circuit. An auxiliary power supply can be used to reduce the load on the panel.

Wiring an Auxiliary Power Supply

An auxiliary power supply can power devices on the keypad bus or LX-Bus™™.

Diagram showing LX Bus Card or Keypad Bus connected to a 12 VDC Power Supply with Sensor Reset Output (optional) and connections to devices via Red, Yellow, Green, and Black wires.

The Sensor Reset Output can reset 2-wire smoke detectors by dropping power to the bus for five seconds. If not needed, positive voltage can go directly from the power supply to the devices.

TECH NOTE: ALWAYS BE SURE THAT THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF THE AUXILIARY POWER SUPPLY IS CONNECTED TO THE BLACK WIRE OF THE KEYPAD OR LX-BUS!

Resistor Values

DMP panels use resistors of different values to control system voltages. Common resistor values include:

How to Determine Resistor Value

Resistor values are determined by color code. With the Gold or Silver band to the right, read the color bands from left to right.

Troubleshooting the 866 Style W Notification Module

The 866 uses the panel's bell circuit to switch power from an external source to sirens and other notification devices, and supervises the connection to the external power source.

How the 866 Works

Diagram showing 866 module connections for Bell Silence, Auxiliary Power, Alarm In, Bell Power In, Bell Out, and Trouble Contacts.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Metering 1&2: Should show +12v (or +24v). If no voltage, ensure ground and power are from the same source.
  2. Metering 2&3: Should show 0-1.2v when normal, +12v when tripped. Steady voltage on terminal 3 is required for Horn Strobes.
  3. Metering 2&4: Should show +12v (or +24v). If 0-1.2v from panel bell, it means the bell hasn't tripped. Ensure ground and power are from the same source.
  4. Metering 5&6: Should show negative volts (-6v or -12v) when normal, and +12v (or +24v) when triggered. If bell doesn't trip, strap out 5&6 with a 10k resistor and meter 5&6 while tripped. For delayed sounding, ensure bell silence switch is normal and a 10k resistor is on 5&6.
  5. Metering 7&8: Should show continuity when normal. If no 10k resistor on 5&6, this contact will show open. Ensure silence switch is normal and a 10k resistor is on 5&6.

Clearing System Messages

Common system messages and troubleshooting tips:

Phone Line 1 Trouble

Indicates a problem with the telephone line. Differences in DMP residential and commercial models may affect the meaning.

Phone Line 1 Trouble XT30 and XT50 panels

RJ supervision is achieved by a jumper wire across pins 2 & 7 of the RJ-31X, connected to a zone named PHONE LINE 1. When the telephone cable is removed, a zone trouble and steady tone are displayed.

To correct:

Diagram of RJ-31X pin-out.

Phone Line 1 Trouble- XR150, XR550 Panels

Panels monitor telephone line voltage; a PHONE LINE 1 TRBL is generated if voltage drops below 3 VDC.

For Model 893-A Dual Phone Line Module:

TECH NOTE: Initializing EVENTS erases ALL EVENTS in the Event Buffer.

4-Wire Bus Trouble

Indicates a problem communicating with keypad bus devices. Not related to LX-Bus issues.

Causes:

  1. All keypad bus devices set to Unsupervised. Ensure at least one keypad bus device is set as Supervised.
  2. Multiple keypad bus devices set to the same Supervised address. Ensure all devices sharing an address are set as Unsupervised.
  3. Low or no voltage on the panel's Yellow (receive) wire (terminal 8). Check DC voltage across terminals 8 & 10, and 7-10 to ground. Reset panel if needed.

TECH NOTE: Multiple UNSUPERVISED devices can share an address if: 1) all are set for UNSUPERVISED operation, 2) none are used for zone expansion, and 3) sufficient auxiliary power is available.

Transmit Fail

The panel made 10 unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the receiver. The panel retries hourly. The message appears when a user disarms the system or initiates a SYSTEM TEST.

What to Do:

  1. Arm the system, let Exit Delay count down, then disarm. This may clear the message if communication is restored.
  2. Send a test-signal.

XR SERIES PANELS:

XT SERIES PANELS, ICOM, CELLCOM:

To test phone line communication:

  1. Enter User Menu; press Command key until SYSTEM TEST? displays.
  2. Press any Select key. Panel dials the 1st Phone Number. 'TRANSMIT OKAY' indicates success.

Verify phone numbers by calling from a butt-set at the RJ-31. Check if it's a working number and not a fax machine. If NO, program the correct number. If YES, verify with the central station that it's the correct receiver for the programmed communication format (DD, NET, CID, CELL).

Transmit Trouble

The panel made at least three unsuccessful attempts to communicate. Clear by achieving communication on the first or second attempt.

XR SERIES PANELS:

XT SERIES PANELS, ICOM, CELLCOM:

If the panel is NOT communicating within two attempts:

  1. Check RJ-31X wiring for proper line seizure.
  2. Use a butt-set to call the receiver phone number programmed in COMMUNICATION > RECEIVER 1 PROG. Verify it's a working number.
  3. Send another System Test to verify communication.

System Trouble

  1. Low or no (open) voltage on the Green wire of the keypad bus.
  2. Reset jumper shorting both pins of the RESET header.
  3. Processor failure.

System Busy

The panel is busy with other communication. Try resetting the panel. If the display doesn't clear, the processor might be 'locked-up'.

To check:

If the display still doesn't clear:

  1. Check DC voltage across terminals 8 & 10, and 9 & 10. If both measure 5 VDC, reset the panel and recheck.
  2. If voltages remain 5 VDC, remove panel ground and all wiring from terminals 7, 8, 9 & 10.
  3. Reset the panel. Check data voltages. If still 5 VDC, replace the panel. If voltages are correct, replace wiring for terminals 7, 8, 9 & 10, checking data voltages after each wire replacement.
