Introduction
This document provides instructions for programming and operating the Rain Bird 1ZEHTMR Digital Hose-End Timer. It is designed for simple, automatic watering of gardens and lawns using a standard garden hose.
Installing Batteries
The timer requires 2 AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries, which are not included.
Note: To protect the timer, remove old batteries at the end of the watering season and dispose of them properly. Install fresh batteries at the start of the season and whenever the "Low Battery" icon flashes.
Battery Status
Battery is full: The battery is fully charged.
Battery is low, change soon: The battery charge is low and should be replaced soon.
Flashing Empty - unit is non-functional due to low battery: The battery is critically low, and the unit will not operate.
Programming Your Timer
The timer allows you to set watering schedules. The main display shows the current day and time, watering status, and programming information.
Interface Overview
- Buttons: SET CLOCK, SET START TIME, SET RUN DAYS, SET DURATION, CANCEL WATERING, WATER NOW, AUTO, OFF.
- Display: Shows current day, time, AM/PM, watering status (e.g., "2x" for watering twice a day, "Valve is open", "Rain Delay on", "Timer is programmed", "Water Now on").
- Dial: Used to select modes like AUTO, OFF, and programming steps.
Setting the Clock
To set the current time and date:
- Turn the dial to the SET CLOCK position.
- Press the OK button to confirm the current time setting.
- Press the OK button to confirm the current date setting.
- The display will show the selected day (e.g., MON, TUE, WED, THU, FRI, SAT, SUN) and time.
Setting the Start Time
To set the watering start time:
- Turn the dial to the SET START TIME position.
- Press the OK button to confirm the start time.
- You can choose to water once or twice per day. If watering twice per day, you will set a second start time.
- Use the up [up-arrow] and down [down-arrow] buttons to adjust the time, then press OK.
Setting Run Days
To select the days you want the timer to water:
- Turn the dial to the SET RUN DAYS position.
- Use the up [up-arrow] and down [down-arrow] buttons to navigate through the days of the week.
- Press OK to select or deselect a day. Selected days will be highlighted.
Setting Duration
To set how long the watering cycle should last:
- Turn the dial to the SET DURATION position.
- Use the up [up-arrow] and down [down-arrow] buttons to adjust the watering duration in minutes. Press and hold to increase/decrease time rapidly.
- The duration can be set up to 6 hours per cycle.
Automatic Watering
To enable automatic watering based on your programmed schedule:
- Turn the dial to the AUTO position.
- When watering: The display shows the time remaining on the current watering cycle.
- When not watering: The display shows the next scheduled start time and duration.
- If set for 2x per day, the display shows the first start time, followed by the second start time, and then the duration.
Turning Unit Off
To turn off the timer completely:
- Turn the dial to the OFF position.
- Note: Your programmed settings are saved when the unit is turned off.
Manual Override (Water Now)
You can manually start watering at any time for a set duration (up to 72 hours).
- Press the WATER NOW button once. Watering will begin within a few seconds.
- To increase or decrease the manual watering duration (in minutes), use the up [up-arrow] and down [down-arrow] buttons.
- The display will show the selected duration and then the time remaining.
- To cancel manual watering, press the CANCEL WATERING button.
Rain Delay
Use the Rain Delay feature to skip watering cycles for a specified period.
- Press the CANCEL WATERING button once to cancel the current watering cycle only. Watering will stop in a few seconds.
- Press the CANCEL WATERING button again to set a specific rain delay duration, up to 96 hours. Use the up [up-arrow] and down [down-arrow] buttons to adjust the delay time, then press OK.
Recommended Use
This timer is intended for outdoor use with cold water only.
- Working Water Pressure: 15 psi (minimum) - 90 psi (maximum).
- Working Temperature: Keep from freezing; maximum 110° F (43° C).

If using a pressure regulator and/or vacuum breaker, install them on the outlet side (bottom) of this timer.
