Models DU5000XL (Undercounter) and DP6880XL (Portable)

Before You Use Your Dishwasher

It is your personal responsibility and obligation to ensure your dishwasher:

  • Is installed by a qualified installer.
  • Has been installed where it is protected from the elements.
  • Has been installed on a floor strong enough to support its weight.
  • Has been properly connected to electricity, water, and drain.
  • Has been properly electrically grounded.
  • Is not used by children or anyone unable to operate it properly.
  • Is properly maintained.

Refer to installation instructions for complete information.

Important Safety Instructions

WARNING - When using your dishwasher, follow basic precautions, including the following:

  1. Read all instructions before using the dishwasher.
  2. DO NOT let children play with or operate your dishwasher.
  3. DO NOT reach into the area below the bottom rack until the Heating Element has cooled for at least 20 minutes.
  4. DO NOT wash plastic items unless marked "Dishwasher Safe" or the equivalent. If not marked, check manufacturer's recommendations.
  5. Store dishwasher detergent in a cool, dry place WHERE CHILDREN CAN'T REACH IT.
  6. Use ONLY detergents and rinse aids recommended for use in a dishwasher.
  7. REMEMBER, use your dishwasher only for the job it was designed to do.
  8. Locate sharp items and knives so that they are not likely to damage the door seal or cut the user.
  9. Properly connect to electricity and water.
  10. DISHWASHER MUST BE ELECTRICALLY GROUNDED. Read the Installation Instructions for details.
  11. DO NOT use your dishwasher unless all enclosure panels are properly in place.
  12. Be sure your dishwasher is installed on a level floor that will hold the weight, and in an area suitable for its size and use.
  13. DO NOT sit or stand on or abuse the dishwasher door or dish racks.
  14. DO NOT tamper with controls.
  15. When discarding an old dishwasher, always remove the door to prevent accidental entrapment.
  16. CAUTION: If hot water has not been used recently (usually two weeks or longer), explosive hydrogen gases may build up in the water heater and the hot water pipes. To prevent injury or damage, before using your dishwasher, turn on all hot water faucets and allow water to run for several minutes. This will allow gases to escape. Do not smoke or use any open flame near the faucet while it is open.
  17. Always disconnect electrical power to the dishwasher before attempting to service.

Power Clean* Washing System

Your dishwasher cleans by spraying a mixture of hot, clean water and detergent against soiled surfaces of dishes. When a cycle starts, the dishwasher fills with water to the level of the heating element. This water is pumped through the rotating spray arms and the Power Clean Module, which removes food particles. Soiled water is pumped out and replaced with clean water during a cycle.

Loading Tip: Load dishes so soiled surfaces face the powerful spray from rotating arms.

The Power Clean Module contains a chopping device that reduces the size of food items. You might hear chopping, grinding, crunching, or buzzing sounds when hard items like fruit seeds, nuts, or egg shells enter the module. These sounds are normal. DO NOT LET METALLIC ITEMS GET INTO THE POWER CLEAN MODULE.

Step-saving preparation for washing

It is not necessary to rinse dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. Simply remove large pieces, bones, and other hard items. The Power Clean Module will remove food particles from the water.

Hot water is a must

Hot water dissolves and activates the dishwashing detergent, dissolves grease, and helps dry glasses spot-free. Ensure loads are washed in hot water (at least 140°F / 60°C).

To ensure a reliable hot water supply:

  1. Maintain 140°F water supply at your central water heater. Check temperature by running hot water at the sink until it's as hot as possible, then measure with a thermometer. If too low, have a qualified person raise the water heater thermostat.
  2. Use the HI-TEMP WASHING Option. This option delays the cycle until the water reaches 145°F (63°C), allowing you to turn down your water heater thermostat without affecting wash performance.

Proper Loading

Always load dishes so soiled surfaces are reached by spray from rotating spray arms. Water must be able to drain off completely for best drying results. Separate items so spray can reach all surfaces.

Top rack loading

The top rack is designed for cups, glasses, and smaller items. Place them with open ends facing down for cleaning and draining. Glasses should only be loaded in the top rack. Load items in the rows between prongs to prevent breakage. Ensure light items are held firmly. Delicate items, like china and crystal, must not touch each other during operation to prevent damage.

Adjustable Top Rack (Model DP6880XL Only)

The top rack does not have to be level. You can raise or lower one or both sides to accommodate tall items by turning the knob clockwise to raise and counterclockwise to lower.

Utensil Load

Plastic items are best placed in the top rack, especially those marked "Dishwasher Safe." Plastic items can melt in the bottom rack. Small bowls, pans, and other utensils can also be placed in the top rack.

Items with cooked-on or dried-on foods should be loaded in the bottom rack with soiled surfaces facing the spray.

Bottom Rack Loading

Ensure pot handles and other items do not obstruct the rotation of the upper or lower spray arms. Securely place heavily soiled cookware face down in the rack.

Place plates, soup bowls, etc., between the prongs and facing the spray.

Load cookie sheets, cake pans, and other large items at the sides or back. Loading such items in front may block water spray from reaching the detergent dispenser and silverware basket.

NOTE: Do not load glasses, cups, or plastic items in the bottom rack. When the lower rack is removed, replace it with bumpers in front.

Silverware Basket Loading

Load forks and spoons so they do not nest together, as spray cannot reach nested items. Mix items in each section of the basket. Small items like baby bottle caps or jar lids can be placed in any section. Ensure sharp items (knives, forks, skewers) are placed point down.

The silverware basket can be loaded while in place on the door, or removed for loading on the counter or table. It can also be removed for easy unloading. Always unload or remove the basket before unloading the racks to avoid spilling water droplets on the silverware.

To remove the basket, slide it toward the top of the door by the handle and lift it off the holding buttons. Replace in reverse order.

To open the basket, unhook the latch. Ensure the cover is completely latched before pulling out the bottom rack and before closing the dishwasher door.

Adding Detergent

The kind and amount of detergent used is important for clean dishes. Use automatic dishwasher detergent only; other detergents may be too mild or sudsy.

Different brands have varying phosphorus content, which softens water and helps prevent water spots. If your water is hard and phosphorus content is low, you may need more detergent or a brand with higher phosphorus content (12% or higher).

Add detergent just before starting the wash cycle. Fresh, dry detergent is necessary for best results. Store detergent tightly in a cool, dry place.

The detergent dispenser

The dispenser has one section with a cover and one without. Use both sections for cycles with two washes. Use only the covered section for cycles with one wash. Push the cover down until it latches. The cover opens automatically during the main wash. Detergent in the open section falls into the dishwasher when the door is closed.

How much detergent to use

The amount depends on water hardness. Too little detergent leaves dishes unclean; too much in soft water can etch glassware.

Determine your water hardness by contacting your local water department, water softener company, or county extension agent.

  • HARD: Fill 1 or both sections to the top line if water is 8 or more grains of hardness.
  • MEDIUM: Fill 1 or both sections to the middle line if water is 5 to 7 grains of hardness.
  • SOFT: Fill one or both sections to the bottom line if water is 0 to 4 grains of hardness.

Use the covered section for the NORMAL WASH Cycle. Use both sections for the POTS & PANS Cycle or HEAVY WASH Cycle.

Rinse aid dispenser

A rinse aid helps water form fewer droplets, aiding in spot-free drying. Use a rinse aid like Jet-Dry*. A small amount is released automatically during the final rinse. Check the dispenser periodically to see if it needs refilling. Keep the dispenser fill cap tightly closed.

Before Starting Your Dishwasher

  1. Spin the Upper Spray Arm to ensure it turns freely.
  2. Close and latch the door.
  3. Run hot water at the sink nearest the dishwasher until it is hot, then turn it off. (For portable dishwashers, see page 14 for connecting instructions.)

Starting Your Dishwasher

Follow these steps for each cycle:

  • POTS & PANS Cycle: Ensure Cycle Control Knob points to POTS & PANS. Push POTS & PANS Clean Selector Button. Push desired option button. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob to start.
  • NORMAL WASH Cycle: Turn Cycle Control Knob clockwise to NORMAL WASH. Push NORMAL WASH button. Push desired option button. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob to start.
  • HEAVY WASH Cycle: Ensure Cycle Control Knob points to HEAVY WASH. Push HEAVY WASH button. Push desired option button. Pull out the Cycle Control Knob to start.
  • RINSE & HOLD Cycle: Select AIR DRY Option only. Push NORMAL WASH Button. Open door slightly. Pull Cycle Control Knob out. Turn Knob clockwise to RINSE & HOLD. Close and latch the door to start.

Changing a setting

You can change a setting anytime during a cycle. Unlatch the door to stop the cycle. With the Cycle Control Knob pulled out, turn it clockwise to the desired cycle. Ensure dispensers are filled. Latch the door to start the new cycle.

To add a dish after starting

  1. Ensure the Cycle Control Knob has not passed NORMAL WASH.
  2. Unlatch the door to stop the cycle, but do not open it until the spray arms stop spinning.
  3. Open the door and add the dish.
  4. Close the door without latching it. Wait 30 seconds for air to warm up, which helps reduce moisture from the vent.
  5. Latch the door; the dishwasher will start from where it stopped.

HI-TEMP WASHING Option

When selected, water for the main wash and final rinse is heated to 145°F (63°C) (except in RINSE & HOLD). Washing and rinsing action will be longer. HI-TEMP washing is automatic in POTS & PANS.

Selecting a Cycle

The control panel features Option Selector Buttons and a Cycle Control Knob.

  • POTS & PANS Cycle: For maximum cleaning of cooked- or baked-on foods. Automatically heats water to 145°F (63°C) in both washes and the last rinse. Cycle time is about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on water heating time.
  • HEAVY WASH Cycle: A double wash for heavily soiled loads. Cycle time is about 70 minutes.
  • NORMAL WASH Cycle: For normal, everyday soiled loads. Cycle time is about 60 minutes.
  • RINSE & HOLD Cycle: For rinsing items to be washed later. Cycle time is about 10 minutes. Use AIR DRY only; do not use HI-TEMP WASHING Option.

The AIR DRY Option

Air in the dishwasher is automatically heated during the "dry" part of all cycles. If the AIR DRY Option is selected, the air is not heated. This saves energy but takes longer for dishes to dry (overnight) and may result in some water spotting. Some items, like plastics, may need towel drying.

To allow steam to escape, open the door long enough before closing it to complete the cycle.

The RESET OPTIONS Button

Use this button to change a selected option. Re-select an option if desired.

Energy Saving Tips

You can help save energy by:

  1. Washing full loads. A half-filled dishwasher uses the same electricity and hot water as a full load.
  2. Using the NORMAL WASH Cycle for normally soiled loads, as it uses less hot water and energy than other cycles.
  3. Air drying dishes when a rapid drying cycle isn't needed. Allow longer drying times (overnight).
  4. Loading correctly for best washing results. Incorrect loading can lead to poor washing and the need to rewash items.
  5. Not pre-rinsing normally soiled dishes. Select the correct cycle and use the recommended detergent amount for good results without hand rinsing.
  6. Using your dishwasher during off-peak hours, as recommended by local utilities to avoid heavy energy usage at certain times of the day.

Special Tips on Dishwasher Use

Remember to use your dishwasher only for its intended purpose. Some items are not dishwasher safe or require special care.

  • Aluminum: May lose its bright, shiny appearance and darken due to minerals and detergent alkalinity. Avoid placing directly in front of the detergent dispenser to prevent spotting, pitting, and discoloration.
  • Colored Aluminum: May fade. Follow utensil manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
  • China: Load carefully, ensuring pieces do not touch. Use the shortest washing cycle. Hand-painted, metal-trimmed, or antique china may fade due to hot water and detergent; test one piece over several weeks. Delicate items should be hand washed.
  • Crystal and Glasses: Load carefully in the top rack only, between prongs to prevent bumping. Use the shortest washing cycle. Delicate items should be hand washed.
  • Flatware: Salty and acidic foods can tarnish silver and stainless flatware. Rinse flatware as soon as possible. Tarnished items can be cleaned with silver polish. A film may form on sterling silver due to reaction with chlorine in detergent, which can be removed with silver polish. Gold flatware is not dishwasher safe.
  • Cast Iron Utensils: The seasoned finish will be removed, leading to rusting. Hand wash and re-season by coating with unsalted fat and heating in a slow oven.
  • Plastics: Place in the upper rack only. Check for "Dishwasher Safe" marking.
  • Non-stick Finish Utensils: Most can be washed in the dishwasher; follow manufacturer suggestions.
  • Wood: Many wooden items will warp or lose their finish. Do not wash cutting boards, wooden salad bowls, or knives with wooden handles.
  • Pewter or Pewter-like Materials: May streak, discolor, and pit. Hand wash with mild detergent.

Dishwasher Care & Cleaning:

Regular use of a soft damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent is usually sufficient for the exterior. If a white film builds up on the inside surfaces due to hard water, clean the inside with dishwasher detergent and water.

Connecting Your Portable Dishwasher

A special adapter must be installed on the faucet before connecting the dishwasher. Complete instructions and the adapter are packed with your dishwasher.

When moving the dishwasher, ensure the door is latched. Use the built-in pull bar or hold it at the top front corners.

Before starting:

  1. Run water at the faucet until it is hot, then turn it off.
  2. Pull hoses out of their storage compartment on the back.
  3. Pull down on the locking collar while lifting the hose connector onto the faucet adapter. When the connector snaps into place, release the locking collar.
  4. Turn the hot water on slowly until it is fully on.
  5. Plug in the power supply cord.
  6. Refer to pages 8 and 9 to start the dishwasher.

While dishwasher is running:

You can draw water from the faucet while the dishwasher is connected. However, DO NOT draw water while the dishwasher is filling or while water is being pumped out, as this can cause a low fill or mix drain water with fresh water.

  1. Press the red button on the hose connector to get the desired water. Adjust the faucet for the water you want (it's set to hot).
  2. Ensure cold water is turned off and hot water is fully on.

When cycle is finished:

  1. Turn hot water off (after the last rinse).
  2. Press the red button on the connector to release water pressure.
  3. Lift slightly on the hose connector while pulling down the locking collar. Pull down on the connector.
  4. Empty any remaining water from the connector.
  5. Unplug the power supply cord and return it to its storage compartment.
  6. Return hoses to their storage compartment.

Electrical Connection

A power supply of 120 volts, 60Hz AC only, 15 amps is required. For personal safety, this appliance must be grounded. It is equipped with a 3-prong grounding plug. To minimize shock hazard, plug it into a mating 3-prong grounding-type wall receptacle, grounded according to the National Electrical Code and local ordinances. If a proper receptacle is not available, the customer must have one installed by a qualified electrician. DO NOT use an extension cord. Ensure the power supply cord's ground prong is never removed.

Converting to built-in

Your Whirlpool Portable Dishwasher can be converted to a built-in (undercounter) model using conversion kit No. 569056, available from your Whirlpool dealer or authorized TECH-CARE Service Company.

Caring for simulated wood top

The simulated wood top can be used as a utility work surface for kitchen jobs. It is strong and easy to clean. Knife marks may be visible but will not seriously damage the top. Hot items from the oven can be placed on it. Clean with warm, soapy water; use a scouring pad for dried-on foods.

If You Need Service or Assistance

Follow these steps:

1. Before calling for assistance...

Performance problems often result from simple issues you can fix yourself:

  • If dishwasher won't run, or stops during cycle: Check if the door is tightly closed and latched, the cycle is correctly set and the Control Knob is pulled out, water is turned on, the house fuse is not blown or circuit breaker tripped, the power cord is plugged in (if equipped), and electrical power is not interrupted. If the motor stops due to overload, it will reset automatically. If it doesn't start, call for service. Check if using POTS & PANS or HI-TEMP WASHING Option and if the dishwasher is waiting for water to heat.
  • If water remains in the dishwasher: Check if the cycle has completed or if the drain air gap (DU5000XL only) is clogged.
  • If detergent remains in the covered detergent cup: Ensure the bottom rack is not in backwards (bumpers should be at the front), the detergent is fresh and dry, and the cycle has completed.
  • If you hear grinding, grating, crunching, or buzzing sounds: A hard object has likely entered the POWERCLEAN Module. The sound should stop when the object is ground up.
