Overview
Campbell Scientific's external cellular modules, including the CELL200 series, enable system integrators, OEMs, and large end users to avoid costly maintenance visits to remote devices. The CELL220 is a 4G LTE cellular device providing serial or CS I/O connectivity to various cellular networks, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Rogers, Bell, Telstra, and Telus. Network and carrier selection is determined by the model and inserted SIM card. The CELL220 offers very low power consumption: 14 mA at idle, 39 mA when active, and 300 µA in low power mode. It is compatible with standard data SIMs and does not require additional services like VPNs or special APNs for remote access, thanks to the complimentary Konect Pakbus Router service. Currently, the CELL220 is an IP-only modem; SMS functionality will be added in a future operating system release and will be field-upgradeable. Cellular network availability is required for field firmware updates.
The CELL220 is part of the CELL200 series, which includes:
- CELL205 for use with AT&T
- CELL210 for use with Verizon
- CELL215 for use in EMEA countries
- CELL220 for use in Australia
- CELL225 for use in Japan

Detailed Description
The CELL220 is an industrial 4G LTE cellular module requiring a micro-SIM 3FF card and a 12 or 24 Vdc power source. It features an RS-232 serial port and a CS I/O port, usable for serial server, serial client, and PPP host services, commonly connecting to a data logger's RS-232 or CS I/O port. Two antenna connectors are provided for primary and diversity antennas, though operation is possible with only the primary antenna connected.
Internet Connectivity
The CELL220 provides Internet connectivity to any Campbell Scientific data logger within a compatible cellular network's range. This enables remote connections to Campbell Scientific software on PCs, mobile devices, and the cloud, and supports protocols such as FTP, DNP3, email, and web (HTTP).
Device Intelligence
The CELL220 offers highly reliable connectivity and remote device management, independent of the connected device. It includes embedded services like IP serial server and client.
Selecting a Data Service
A SIM card and data plan are necessary for telemetry systems. Telstra generally offers the best coverage in Australia, particularly in regional areas. Coverage maps are available on Telstra's and Optus' websites. The CELL220 works with standard data plans, and the complimentary Konect Pakbus Router service simplifies setup.
Configuring the CELL220
Configuration is done via a web-based tool hosted by the module, accessible remotely via cellular WAN (in serial server mode) using Internet Explorer or Firefox, or directly via USB. It can also be configured from a data logger using the Device Configuration Utility or CRBasic instructions when in PPP mode.
Data Logger Connection
Data loggers connect via serial or CS I/O cables. The CS I/O connection powers the modem and allows connection of two peripherals to a single data logger, such as a CELL220 and an RF412 radio.
Powering the CELL220
The CELL220 features extremely low power consumption. At 12 Vdc, average consumption is approximately 14 mA when idle. It can be powered on/off using a data logger's SW12V port or the IPNetPower() instruction (for CR1000X, CR300, CR6). Power can be supplied by a BP12 battery, CH150 charging regulator, and SP10 solar panel.
Antennas
Campbell Scientific offers two antenna options: an enclosure-mounted MIMO antenna (ANT-RV50(X)/CELL220-ENC-0.6M recommended) and an external whip antenna. For discrete antenna needs, a pair of ANT 6.5DB-4GX-N antennas can be used. External antennas may require surge suppression kits; contact Campbell Scientific for details.
SMS Functionality (coming soon)
The CELL220 will initially be released without SMS support. This feature will be added in a future operating system release and will be field-upgradeable. Cellular service and mobile data are required for over-the-air operating system updates.
