This kit facilitates the conversion of Garland ovens between single-phase and three-phase power. Note: This kit is not intended for voltage conversion.
Important: This procedure must be performed by a qualified electrician.
Procedure Overview
Garland ovens are shipped wired for either single-phase or three-phase power based on the original factory order. If the installation requires a change in power type, follow the steps below.
WIRING THE OVEN
- Disconnect Oven Power: Ensure the oven is completely disconnected from the power supply. ?
- Access Oven Interior: Remove the right-front side cover of the oven.
- Wire Connections: Locate the wires originating from the supply-power terminal block (TB1) that connect to the contactor, heaters, and fuses. Attach these wires according to the applicable wiring diagram provided. Refer to Figure 1 for single-phase wiring and Figure 2 for three-phase wiring.
Figure 1: Single Phase Wiring Example
This diagram illustrates the typical wiring connections for a single-phase configuration at the terminal block (TB1), showing connections for terminals X, Y, and Z, along with ground (GND) and specific wire numbers (e.g., 32, 34, 35, 42).
Figure 2: Three Phase Wiring Example
This diagram shows the typical wiring connections for a three-phase configuration at the terminal block (TB1), indicating connections for terminals X, Y, and Z, along with ground (GND) and specific wire numbers (e.g., 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 40, 41, 42).
APPLYING NEW RATING INFORMATION TO OVEN
After the electrical conversion, the oven's rating plate must be updated to reflect the new configuration.
- Locate Rating Plate: Identify the oven's rating plate, which is typically located on the oven itself. This plate contains the original electrical specifications. Refer to Figure 3 for an example.
- Select Label Set: Locate the provided label set, as shown in Figure 4. This set includes various configuration labels and parameter overlays.
- Choose Correct Overlay: Select the label overlay that accurately matches the new power configuration of the oven. For instance, if converting to 208V three-phase, choose the corresponding overlay. Refer to Figure 5 for an example of a label overlay.
- Apply Label Overlay: Carefully peel the chosen label overlay and apply it over the existing rating plate, covering the old configuration details. Ensure the values on the new label are correctly aligned with the corresponding columns on the original rating plate. Refer to Figure 6 for an example of an updated rating plate.
- Apply Caution Label: Select the appropriate "CAUTION" label that corresponds to the conversion performed (e.g., 1 Phase to 3 Phase) and apply it adjacent to the updated rating plate. Refer to Figure 7 for an example of a caution label.
- Conversion Complete: The conversion process is now complete. ✔️
Figure 3: Rating Plate Example
This figure shows a typical oven rating plate, displaying essential information such as Model Number (e.g., MCO-ES-10S-XXXX), Serial Number (e.g., SAMPLE), Voltage (e.g., 208V), Phase/Wires (e.g., 1 PH 2 WIRES or 3 PH 3 WIRES), Frequency (Hz, e.g., 60Hz), Maximum Full Load Amps, Minimum Supply Wire Gauge (AWG), and safety certifications (e.g., cULus Listed, NSF). It also includes important caution and attention statements in English and French regarding wire gauge suitability (90°C/194°F) and minimum clearance to combustible construction.
Figure 4: Label Set Example
This figure illustrates the set of adhesive labels provided with the conversion kit. It includes configuration labels such as "THIS UNIT HAS BEEN CONVERTED FROM 1 PHASE TO 3 PHASE" (and its French equivalent "CET APPAREIL A ÉTÉ CONVERTI DE 1 PHASE À 3 PHASES") and "THIS UNIT HAS BEEN CONVERTED FROM 3 PHASE TO 1 PHASE" (and its French equivalent "CET APPAREIL A ÉTÉ CONVERTI DE 3 PHASES À 1 PHASE"), along with numerical parameter labels.
Figure 5: Label Overlay Example
This figure displays an example of a label overlay, showing specific electrical parameters like Volts, PH WIRES, Hz, AMPS, and SIZE, designed to be applied over the original rating plate to update the oven's specifications after conversion.
Figure 6: Rating Plate Example
This figure shows an updated rating plate after the label overlay has been applied, demonstrating how the new configuration details (e.g., 3 PH 3 WIRES for 208V) are presented over the original information.
Figure 7: Caution Label Example
This figure shows an example of a caution label, indicating the type of conversion performed on the unit, such as "1 PHASE TO 3 PHASE", intended to be placed next to the rating plate.
Detailed Wiring Diagram Reference
Page 3 of this document contains a comprehensive electrical wiring diagram for 208/240V electric models. This schematic details the internal connections between components including cooling fans, fuses (F1, F2), contactors (K5), various switches (S1, S6, S8, S9, S10), pilot lamps (L1, L4), the thermostat board (PCB3), the terminal block (TB1), and heating elements. It specifies wire routing, color coding, and connections for different circuits, serving as a detailed technical reference for qualified electricians during the conversion process.
