Important Notes

Power Supply

  • Do not connect the unit to the same power outlet used by an electrical appliance controlled by an inverter or a motor (such as a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, or air conditioner). Depending on how such an electrical appliance is used, power supply noise may cause the unit to malfunction or produce audible noise. If a different power outlet is not available, connect a power supply noise filter between the unit and the power outlet.
  • After many hours of use, the AC adapter will start to generate heat. This is completely normal and no cause for concern.
  • Place the AC adapter so that the side with text faces down.

Placement

  • Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment with large power transformers) may produce hum. To solve this problem, change the orientation of the unit or move it away from the source of interference.
  • This unit may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this unit near such receivers.
  • Using wireless communication devices (e.g., mobile phones) near the unit may cause noise. This type of noise can occur when receiving or making a call, or during conversation. If you experience this type of problem, move the wireless devices away from the unit or turn them off.
  • If the unit is moved to a place with substantially different temperature and/or humidity conditions, condensation may form inside. If you try to use the unit under these circumstances, damage or malfunctions could occur. Therefore, before using the unit, let it rest for several hours to allow the condensation to evaporate completely.
  • Do not leave any objects on the keyboard. This could cause malfunctions, for example, the keys might stop sounding.
  • Depending on the material and temperature of the surface where you place the unit, the rubber feet may stain or damage the surface.
  • Do not place containers or other objects containing liquids on top of this unit. If liquid spills on the surface of this unit, wipe it immediately with a soft, dry cloth.

Maintenance

  • Do not use paint thinner, solvent, alcohol, or any type of solvent to avoid deforming and/or discoloring the unit.

Keyboard Care (FANTOM-08 only)

  • Do not write on the keyboard with a pen or similar object, and do not seal or mark the instrument in any way. Ink could seep through the surface lines and might not be removable.
  • Do not place adhesives on the keyboard. Adhesives that use strong glue might not be removable and could cause discoloration.
  • To remove stubborn dirt, use a common non-abrasive keyboard cleaner. Start by cleaning gently. If you cannot remove the dirt, clean it by applying increasing pressure, being careful not to scratch the keys.

Repairs and Stored Data

  • If the unit needs repair, before sending it, make sure to back up the data stored on it; or you may prefer to write down the information you need. Although Roland will do its best to preserve the data stored on the unit when performing necessary repairs, there are cases where data restoration may be impossible, for example, when the memory section is physically damaged. Roland assumes no responsibility for the restoration of lost stored content.

Additional Precautions

  • Any data stored in the unit may be lost due to equipment failure, malfunction, etc. To prevent irreversible data loss, make sure to regularly back up the data you save in the unit.
  • Roland assumes no responsibility for the restoration of lost stored content.
  • Use the unit's buttons, knobs, jacks, and connectors with care. Incorrect use can lead to malfunctions.
  • Never hit or apply excessive pressure to the screen.

Unit Overview

In general terms, this unit consists of four sections: controller, synthesizer, sequencer, and sampler.

  • Controller: This section includes the keyboard, pads, pitch bend/modulation lever, wheels, panel knobs, sliders, and any pedal connected to the rear panel. When you play and perform an action, such as pressing or releasing a key or pressing the Damper pedal, that action is converted into a MIDI message and transmitted to the sound engine and an external MIDI device.
  • Synthesizer: This section generates and modifies sound. In response to controller performance data, it produces an audio signal that is output through the OUTPUT and PHONE connectors. This section produces sounds ranging from piano to organ, string instruments, lead synthesizers, drums, and much more.
  • Sequencer: This section allows you to create patterns with a 16-track MIDI sequencer (p. 26). Tones from the 16 zones of the scene can be recorded directly to the 16 tracks. It includes real-time recording, step recording, and TR-REC. You can combine patterns to create groups and arrange the groups in the desired order to create a song.
  • Sampler: The Sampler section allows you to record sound (sample) from your keyboard performance or audio input from an audio device or microphone. The recorded sample can be played by pressing a pad. This instrument has an integrated sampler that supports various samples, whose sound can be heard through the sound engine. For more information, consult the "Reference Manual" (PDF). This manual discusses the pad sampler (p. 23).
  • Sample: A part of the sampled sound. For each sample, you can specify loop playback and other settings, and assign it to a pad.

Sound Units

Tone

A "tone" is the smallest sound unit of this unit. A tone is formed by the combination of a sound engine and effects (MFX+EQ). Use the tone category buttons [1]-[16] to select tones by category.

  • PRESET TONE: Sound engine + MFX + EQ.
  • USER TONE: Sound engine + MFX + EQ.

You can edit a tone and then save it as a user tone. Some tones are "percussion kits" that provide a collection of percussion instrument sounds. In a percussion kit, different percussion instrument sounds are heard depending on the key (note number) played.

Zone

A zone is a container for playing a tone. To play a tone, you must assign it to a zone. For each zone, you can specify whether it is connected to the keyboard and make settings such as key range, volume, stereo position, and controller reception. There are 16 zones; by combining zones, you can create sounds consisting of multiple tones, or create basic performance settings (sound) for each song. You can also use specific zones to control an external sound module (EXT ZONE) instead of the internal sound engine.

  • ZONE 16 Diagram: Shows ZONE1 (EXT: MIDI, USB) and ZONE16 (INT: TONE) with parameters like Level, stereo position, Key Range, etc.

Effects

This instrument includes a variety of effects.

Tone Effect (MFX, COMP)

These effects are configured per tone. The COMP effect can be used for tones configured as percussion kits.

Zone Effect (EQ)

These effects are configured per zone.

Scene Effect (IFX 1, IFX 2, Chorus, Reverb)

These effects are configured per scene.

Master FX (M. COMP, M. EQ, TFX)

These effects are applied to the system in general. Use these effects in the final stage of sound output. The TFX can be controlled in real time.

Setting Synchronization for Sounds to Play at Each Step (TR-REC)

What is TR-REC?

TR-REC is the method of using the TONE CATEGORY [1]-[16] buttons to specify when each instrument will sound. TR-REC is available at any time, whether the phrase is playing or stopped. You can use it while listening to a rhythm you created yourself. For example, to create the percussion pattern shown in Figure 1, you would make the settings in Figure 2.

  • Figure 1: Shows a percussion pattern with notes on steps 01, 05, 09, 13 for Charles Closed, 03, 07, 11, 15 for Snare, and 01, 05, 09, 13 for Bass Drum.
  • Figure 2: Shows the corresponding button states for each step (lit for sound, unlit for no sound).

For the percussion part, when you play an instrument on the keyboard, the TONE CATEGORY [1]-[16] buttons light up or turn off to indicate the steps where the instrument will sound. By pressing one of the TONE CATEGORY [1]-[16] buttons, the button in question switches between lit and unlit, which determines whether the instrument sounds or not at that specific step.

  1. Press the [REC] button. The REC STANDBY screen appears.
  2. In <TRACK/PATTERN>, note the track you are going to record.

Controlling an External MIDI Device (EXT MIDI OUT)

Operations of this unit's knobs and keyboard performance can be transmitted as MIDI messages from its MIDI OUT connector and USB MIDI OUT. By defining a specific zone for "EXT", you can use that zone to control an external MIDI device.

  1. Turn off the ZONE SELECT button and then press the ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] buttons corresponding to the zone you want to output via MIDI. To select zones 9-16, use the [ZONE 9-16] button to change the group, then press a ZONE NT/EXT [1]-[8] button.
  2. Press the ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] button of the selected zone so it lights up green.

If it is not green, hold down the [SHIFT] button and press the corresponding ZONE INT/EXT button to make it light up green (EXT setting). If it is lit green (EXT setting), MIDI messages are output. If the ZONE INT/EXT buttons of multiple zones are lit, these settings, in combination with the zones specified by the ZONE SELECT button (current zone), determine whether MIDI is sent to an external sound module (p. 17).

You can also access advanced settings by configuring the ZONE INT/EXT control to "Advanced."
