Placing This Unit on a Stand

Carefully place the instrument on a stand, avoiding pinching fingers. When using the KS-10Z, ensure the unit height is 1 meter or lower.

If You're Using the FANTOM-06/FANTOM-07

Use Roland KS-12, KS-10Z, or KS-20X stands. Illustrations show FANTOM-06.

KS-10Z Stand

Align the front of the FANTOM with the front of the stand. Adjust stand width so arms align between the rubber feet of the FANTOM.

KS-12 Stand

Adjust horizontal width so rubber feet fit into provided holes.

KS-20X Stand

Line up the FANTOM to rest on the rubber rings. For FANTOM-06, open stand past the fourth stop (first stop is closed, fifth is fully open). For FANTOM-07, open stand past the fifth stop (first stop is closed, sixth is fully open).

If You're Using the FANTOM-08

Use Roland KS-12, KS-10Z, KS-G8B, or KS-20X stands.

KS-10Z Stand

Align the front of the FANTOM with the front of the stand. Adjust height not to exceed 1 meter. Adjust stand width so arms align between the rubber feet of the FANTOM.

KS-12 Stand

Adjust horizontal width so rubber feet fit into provided holes.

KS-G8B Stand

Align the front of the FANTOM with the stand's upper arm. Align the center of the FANTOM with the center of the stand.

KS-20X Stand

Line up the FANTOM to rest on the rubber rings. Open stand from closed position past the fourth stop (first stop is closed, fifth is fully open).

Top Panel

The top panel features various controls for performance and sound manipulation.

1. Controller Section

WHEEL 1/WHEEL 2
Assign various parameters or functions. Hold [SHIFT] for setting screen.
[S1] [S2] button
Assign various parameters or functions. Hold [SHIFT] to access assignment screen.
Pitch bend/modulation lever
Controls pitch bend or vibrato.

2. Zone Section

[MASTER VOLUME] knob
Adjusts volume for MAIN OUT and PHONES jacks.
[PAN/LEVEL] button
When lit, control knobs [1]-[8] adjust pan of each zone; sliders [1]-[8] adjust volume. Hold [SHIFT] for MIXER screen.
[CTRL] button
When lit, control knobs [1]-[8] control current zone parameters.
[ASSIGN] button
Assigns functions to sliders [1]-[8] and control knobs [1]-[8]. ASSIGN1 for scene parameters, ASSIGN2 for system settings. Hold [SHIFT] to access assignment screen. Switch between ASSIGN1 and ASSIGN2 by pressing [ASSIGN] + [PAN/LEVEL] buttons.
[ZONE 9-16] button
Switches zones (Unlit: 1-8, Lit: 9-16).
[ZONE SELECT] button
Selects the current zone. When on, use ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] buttons to select zone.
Control knobs [1]-[8]
Assign various parameters or functions depending on function select buttons.
ZONE INT/EXT buttons [1]-[8]
Specify if zone sounds internally or externally (sound module). When ZONE SELECT is on, these operate as ZONE SELECT [1]-[8] buttons.
Sliders [1]-[8]
Assign various parameters or functions depending on function select buttons.
[SPLIT] button
Turns split function on/off.
[CHORD MEMORY] button
Turns chord memory function on/off.
[ARPEGGIO] button
Turns arpeggiator on/off.
[TRANSPOSE] button
Hold down to use OCTAVE [DOWN]/[UP] buttons for semitone pitch range adjustment.
OCTAVE [DOWN] [UP] button
Raise or lower pitch range in octave steps.

3. Common Section

[WRITE] button
Displays WRITE screen; saves a scene or tone.

4. Scene Section

[SCENE SELECT] button
Displays SCENE SELECT screen; select a scene.
[SCENE CHAIN] button
Displays SCENE CHAIN screen; recall scenes in order.
[ZONE VIEW] button
Displays ZONE VIEW screen; check zone states. Recalls piano sound to zone 1, others off.
[SINGLE TONE] button
Recalls a piano sound to zone 1. Unsaved scene settings are lost.

5. SYNTH Control Section

[MASTER FX] button
Displays MASTER FX screen. Hold [SHIFT] for MASTER EQ editing screen.
[MOTIONAL PAD] button
Displays MOTIONAL PAD screen.

Uses unit as DAW controller.

Perform assigned functions, edit parameters, scroll lists/tabs. Press to execute operations or confirm values.

Changes values. Hold [SHIFT] for greater changes.

7. Pad Section

[SAMPLING] button
Lets you sample.
[PAD MODE] button
Specifies functions assigned to pads. Hold [SHIFT] to access edit screen for selected pad mode.
[CLIP BOARD] button
Moves or copies samples between pads.
[BANK] button
Switches pad bank.
[HOLD] button
Turns hold on/off (sound continues after release).
Pads [1]-[16]
Play assigned samples. Make pad mode settings to assign functions.

Rear Panel (Connecting the External Equipment)

Always turn down volume and turn off units before making connections.

C USB
Connects to computer (USB flash drive).
D MIC/LINE INPUT
Connects dynamic microphone or audio equipment. LEVEL knob adjusts input level. MIC jack for microphone, R, L/MONO jacks for audio devices/external synthesizers.
E SUB OUT
Output jacks for sub-out audio (stereo). STEREO (PHONES) jack for headphones (adjust volume from MIXER screen).
F MAIN OUT
Balanced output jacks for audio signals to mixer. Pin assignment: TIP: HOT, RING: COLD, SLEEVE: GND.
G PHONES jack
Connects headphones. Audio signal also sent from OUTPUT and BALANCED OUT jacks.
H Ground terminal
Connects to external earth or ground.
I [POWER] switch
Turns power on/off.
J DC IN jack
Connects included AC adaptor.
K Cord hook
Secures AC adaptor cord.

A PEDAL jacks

HOLD jack
Connects pedal switch (DP series) for damper pedal.
CTRL2 jack, CTRL1 jack
Assign various functions to connected pedals. Use only specified expression pedal.

B MIDI connectors

MIDI OUT connector
Transmits MIDI messages to external MIDI device.
MIDI IN connector
Receives MIDI messages from external MIDI device.

C USB port

USB EXT DEVICE jack
Connects to external USB device.
USB COMPUTER port
Connects to computer for performance data and audio signals.
USB MEMORY port
Uses commercially available USB flash drive (compatibility not guaranteed).

Turning the Power On/Off

Turning on the Power

  1. Minimize unit volume and connected external devices.
  2. Press the [POWER] switch.
  3. Turn on connected external devices.
  4. Adjust volume of connected external devices.
  5. Adjust unit volume.

Turning off the Power

  1. Minimize unit volume and connected external devices.
  2. Turn off connected external devices.
  3. Press the [POWER] switch.

Note: Always turn volume down when powering on/off to avoid sound bursts.

Making the Power Automatically Turn off After a Time (Auto Off)

The unit automatically turns off after a predetermined period of inactivity. Unsaved data is lost. To restore power, turn the unit on again.

Changing the Auto Off Setting

  1. Press the [MENU] button.
  2. Touch <SYSTEM>.
  3. Touch <GENERAL>.
  4. Select "Auto Off" and change the setting:
    • Off: Power will not turn off automatically.
    • 30min: Turns off after 30 minutes of no operation.
    • 240min (default): Turns off after 240 minutes (4 hours) of no operation.
  5. To store the auto-off setting, press the [WRITE] button in the System screen.

Introduction

Basic Operation

The unit's display is a touch panel for various operations. Text in [] indicates panel buttons, text in <> indicates screen buttons/knobs.

Note: Use a light touch with your finger. Do not use excessive force or hard objects.

Memo: To return to the SCENE SELECT screen, press [EXIT] several times or [SCENE SELECT].

Editing a Value

Use [INC]/[DEC] buttons to increase/decrease values. Hold for continuous change, or hold one while pressing the other for rapid change. Hold [SHIFT] with [INC]/[DEC] for greater changes.

Use [VALUE] dial to increase/decrease values. Hold [SHIFT] with [VALUE] dial for greater changes.

Display (Touch panel): Directly touch or drag icons to switch settings or edit values.

NUMERIC window: Hold [SHIFT] and press [ENTER] to enter numeric values directly. Not all parameters support numeric input.

Moving the Cursor

Use Cursor [▲][▼][◀][▶] buttons to move the cursor. Hold for continuous movement, or hold one while pressing the opposite for rapid movement.

Display (Touch panel): Directly touch parameter values, knob icons, or slider icons to move the cursor.

Confirming or Canceling the Value

Use [ENTER] to confirm values or execute operations. When a list appears, press [ENTER] to change settings.

Use [EXIT] to return to the previous screen or close windows.

Display (Touch panel): <OK> or <SELECT> function as [ENTER]. <CANCEL> or <EXIT> function as [EXIT].

[SHIFT] Button

Used in conjunction with other buttons to access related edit screens (shortcuts).

Function Knobs [E1]–[E6]

Perform assigned functions, edit parameters, or scroll lists/tabs. Press to edit values with button-like operation.

Knob and Slider Operations

Editing with knobs/sliders shows a popup screen with the parameter and value, which closes automatically. Some parameters do not show a popup.

[MENU] Button

Access detailed function settings or system settings. Also accessible by touching the menu icon on the SCENE SELECT screen.

Operating procedures in this manual: Operations can be performed in multiple ways (button, touch panel, dial). This manual may provide abbreviated explanations, but users can use any convenient method.

Operations in the Display

The unit's display is a touch panel. Text in [] indicates panel buttons, text in <> indicates screen buttons/knobs.

TONE EDIT screen

Allows editing of tone parameters. Touch to close window, drag to edit values, touch to turn switches on/off.

ZONE VIEW screen

Touch to move cursor, touch to turn switches on/off, touch to open lists.

SCENE SELECT screen

Opens menu, moves between screens, selects scenes. Icons are arranged in a 4x4 grid. Use <◀> or <▶> icons to navigate 16-scene pages.

MENU screen

Returns to the next-higher level. Provides access to TONE EDIT, EFFECTS EDIT, ZONE EDIT, SCENE EDIT, MIXER, SYSTEM, ARPEGGIO, CHORD MEMORY, FILE UTILITY, UTILITY.

RENAME screen

Allows entering characters to rename items. Includes alphanumeric and symbol keys, Shift, Back, Clear, Space, Cancel, Confirm.

An Overview of This Unit

The FANTOM consists of four sections: controller, synthesizer, sequencer, and sampler.

Controller

Includes keyboard, pads, pitch bend/modulation lever, wheels, panel knobs, sliders, and pedals. Performance data is converted to MIDI messages for the sound engine and external MIDI devices.

Synthesizer

Generates and modifies sound based on controller performance data, outputting audio from OUTPUT and PHONE jacks. Produces sounds from piano to drums.

Sequencer

Creates patterns using a 16-track MIDI sequencer. Supports realtime, step, and TR-REC recording. Combines patterns into groups and songs.

Sampler

Audio-records (samples) keyboard performance or input from audio devices/mics. Recorded samples can be played by pressing a pad. Supports multisamples. Refer to "Reference Manual" for details on multisamples, and p. 23 for pad sampler.

Units of Sound

TONE

Smallest unit of sound, combining sound engine and effects (MFX+EQ). Select tones by category using buttons [1]-[16]. Tones can be edited and saved as user tones. Some tones are "drum kits" with percussion sounds varying by key.

ZONE

Container for playing a tone. Assign a tone to a zone. Specify keyboard connection, key range, volume, pan, and controller reception. 16 zones allow combining multiple tones or controlling external sound modules (EXT ZONE).

SCENE

Contains a favorite performing state, including zone settings (tone, MFX, volume), common settings (Reverb, Chorus, IFX), and sequence data. Store ideas as scenes and manage them by switching. Recall saved scenes from SCENE SELECT. Use SCENE CHAIN to recall scenes in order for live performance.

Memo: Instrument can stay in a scene (Scene Remain). Icon at top of screen shows on/off status (16: OFF, : ON). Refer to "Reference Manual" for details.

Performing

Selecting a Sound (SCENE/TONE)

Selecting a Scene

  1. Press [SCENE SELECT] button. SCENE SELECT screen appears.
  2. Touch a scene icon to select. Selected icon is colored. Sixteen icons arranged in 4x4 grid. Use <◀> or <▶> icons to navigate pages.

Selecting a Tone

  1. Press [ZONE VIEW] button. ZONE VIEW screen appears. Each press switches VIEW number (zones shown simultaneously).
  2. When ZONE SELECT is on, use ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] buttons to select current zone.
  3. Press a ZONE SELECT button [1]-[8] to select the zone to control. For zones 9-16, use [ZONE 9-16] button then ZONE SELECT [1]-[8].
  4. Press a tone category button [1]-[16] to select tone type.
  5. Move cursor to tone name/number, use [VALUE] dial or [INC][DEC] buttons to select tone. Press [ENTER] for "TONE LIST."

Layering Zones (Layer)

  1. Press ZONE INT/EXT button of desired zones to light them red.
  2. Of lit zones, press ZONE SELECT button of one zone to specify as current. Playing keyboard sounds red-lit zones as layers.

Note: Green-lit ZONE INT/EXT buttons control external MIDI modules. To switch to internal sound engine, hold [SHIFT] and press corresponding ZONE INT/EXT button to light red (INT setting).

Dividing the Keyboard into Two Regions (Split)

  1. Press [SPLIT] button to light it. High region plays zone 1 tone, low region plays zone 4 tone.
  2. To cancel, press [SPLIT] button to go dark. High/low regions (KEY RANGE) reset to layer state.

Changing the Keyboard's Split Point

  1. Hold [SPLIT] button, press key for new split point. Split point is shown. Release [SPLIT] to return to previous display. Split-point key is included in ZONE 1.

Memo: To change upper key range tone, press ZONE SELECT [1]; for lower key range, press ZONE SELECT [4]. Use KEY RANGE function for free key range specification. Hold [SHIFT] and press [SPLIT] for KEY RANGE setting screen.

Raising/Lowering the Key Range in Semitones (Transpose)

  1. Hold [TRANSPOSE] button, press OCTAVE [DOWN] or [UP]. Range: -5 to +6 semitones.
  2. To restore original setting, hold [TRANSPOSE] and press OCTAVE [DOWN] and [UP] simultaneously.

Raising/Lowering the Key Range in Octaves (Octave)

  1. Press OCTAVE [DOWN] or [UP]. Maximum ±3 octaves.
  2. To restore original setting, press OCTAVE [DOWN] and [UP] simultaneously.

Playing Arpeggios

Arpeggiator automatically produces arpeggios based on keys pressed.

  1. On ZONE VIEW, turn ARP "ON" for applicable zone.
  2. Press [ARPEGGIO] button to light it.
  3. Play a chord on keyboard. Arpeggio plays according to notes of chord for zones that are on.
  4. Move cursor to "STYLE" and change style.
  5. To turn off, press [ARPEGGIO] button again to go dark.

Memo: Use with chord memory for varied arpeggio sounds with one finger.

Playing Chords (Chord Memory)

Sounds a pre-registered chord form when playing a single note.

  1. Press [CHORD MEMORY] button to light it.
  2. Play keyboard. Chord sounds according to selected form.
  3. Move cursor to "CHORD FORM" and change form.
  4. To turn off, press [CHORD MEMORY] button again to go dark.

Selecting/Playing Rhythm Patterns

Perform while a rhythm pattern plays.

  1. Press [RHYTHM PATTERN] button. RHYTHM PATTERN screen appears.
  2. Move cursor to "RHYTHM GROUP".
  3. Use [VALUE] dial to select rhythm group.
  4. Touch <Intro>–<Ending> to select rhythm pattern. Pattern plays.

Memo: To stop, touch the icon of the playing rhythm pattern.

Changing the Tempo

  1. Press [TEMPO] button. TEMPO screen appears.
  2. Use [VALUE] dial to change tempo.

Memo: Specify tempo by pressing [TEMPO] button at desired timing (tap tempo). Press three or more times at quarter-note intervals.

Using the Sliders and Control Knobs

  1. Switch the zone (ZONE 1-16) you want to use. (Use [ZONE 9-16] button for zones 9-16).
  2. Press a function select button to select parameter to control.
    • [PAN/LEVEL] button: Control knobs adjust pan, sliders adjust volume.
    • [CTRL] button: Control knobs [1]-[8] control current zone parameters (ATTACK, RELEASE, REVERB, CHORUS, LOW GAIN, MID GAIN, HIGH GAIN, EQ ON).
    • [ASSIGN] button: Control knobs/sliders adjust preset parameters. SCENE settings: [ASSIGN]. SYSTEM settings: [ASSIGN] + [PAN/LEVEL].
    • [ZONE SELECT] button: Selects current zone. When on, ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] buttons select current zone.
  3. Move control knobs and sliders. Sound changes according to assigned function.

Memo: Hold [SHIFT] and press [ASSIGN] for parameter assignment edit screen. Refer to "Reference Manual" for details.

Simultaneously Modifying the Volume of Multiple Zones (Motional Pad)

Motional pad function modifies volume of four zones by dragging on screen, producing diverse tonal changes.

  1. Press [MOTIONAL PAD] button. MOTIONAL PAD screen appears. Zone numbers shown at corners. If zone is off, press ZONE INT/EXT button [1]-[8] to turn on.
  2. Drag the circle (pointer) in center to change position. Volume balance of four zones changes, altering sound in real time.

Editing

Editing a Zone

16 zones allow settings for volume (Level), equalizer (EQ), and key range (KBD).

  1. Select a scene.
  2. Press [MENU] button. MENU screen appears.
  3. Touch <ZONE EDIT>. ZONE EDIT screen appears.
  4. Press cursor [▲][▼] buttons to select zone to control. (For zones 9-16, use [ZONE 9-16] button to switch group).
  5. Move cursor to desired parameter and edit value. Use knobs [E1]-[E6] to scroll tabs and edit parameters.

Note: Zone setting changes are temporary. Save scene (p. 22) to keep changes.

Editing a Tone

  1. Select tone to edit (see "Selecting a Tone," p. 17).
  2. Press [MENU] button. MENU screen appears.
  3. Touch <TONE EDIT>. TONE EDIT ZOOM screen appears.
  4. Move cursor to desired parameter and edit value. Use knobs [E1]-[E6] to scroll tabs and edit parameters.

Memo: For detailed editing, use TONE EDIT PRO screen. Refer to "Reference Manual" and "Parameter Guide." [CUTOFF] and [RESONANCE] knobs on panel edit tones. Press [OSC], [AMP], [FX], [LFO] buttons to switch screen to respective section on TONE EDIT ZOOM screen.

Note: Tone setting changes are temporary. Save tone (p. 22) to keep changes.

Editing the Effects

Arrangement and signal paths for effects are shown. Select and edit settings. This section explains editing tone effects (MFX).

Note: For IFX1/2, Chorus, Reverb, Master FX, see "Parameter Guide."

Editing the Tone's Effect (MFX)

  1. Press [MENU] button. MENU screen appears.
  2. Touch <EFFECTS EDIT>. EFFECTS EDIT screen appears.

Turning the MFX on/off

  1. In the screen, touch <MFX> to turn it on/off.

Editing the MFX parameters

  1. In MFX section, touch <EDIT>. EFFECTS EDIT ZOOM screen appears.
  2. In MFX section, touch <EDIT>. MFX EDIT ZOOM screen for MFX appears.
  3. Move cursor to desired parameter and edit value. Use knobs [E1]-[E6] to move cursor or edit parameters directly.
  4. Touch <To PRO>. MFX EDIT PRO screen appears.

Note: Effect setting changes are temporary. Save tone, scene, or system settings (p. 22) to keep changes.

Memo: Edit effect settings using EFFECTS section knobs/buttons on panel (p. 9). Refer to "Parameter Guide" for details.

Saving a Scene or Tone

Edited zone/tone settings and recorded data are temporary. Save to keep changes.

Note: Saving overwrites existing data.

  1. Press [WRITE] button. WRITE MENU screen appears.
  2. Touch item to save (e.g., <SCENE> for SCENE WRITE screen).
  3. To change name, touch <Rename> and edit name. Touch <OK>.
  4. Use [VALUE] dial or [DEC][INC] buttons to select save-destination.
  5. Touch <OK>. Confirmation message appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  6. Touch <OK>. Data is saved.

Recalling Scenes in the Order of Songs (Scene Chain)

Use SCENE CHAIN to recall scenes in desired order for live performance. Chain sets specify scene order and can be saved.

  1. Press [SCENE CHAIN] button. SCENE CHAIN screen appears.
  2. Touch "CHAIN SET" name and switch chain sets. (Also use [▲][▼] buttons while holding [SHIFT]). Chain set registers scene order.
  3. Press tone category button [1]-[16] to select a scene. 16 scenes arranged horizontally correspond to tone category buttons. Also select by touching scene icon. Use <◀> or <▶> icons for previous/next 16 scenes.

Sampler

Audio-records (samples) keyboard performance or input from audio devices/mics. Recorded samples play by pressing a pad. Built-in sampler supports multisamples. Refer to "Reference Manual" for details on multisamples, and p. 23 for pad sampler.

Playing a Sample by Pressing a Pad

Use pads [1]-[16] to play sampled sounds. First, set "SAMPLE PAD" as pad function (see "Assigning Convenient Functions to the Pads (PAD MODE)," p. 24).

  1. Press a pad [1]-[16]. Sample plays. Multiple pads can be pressed simultaneously.

Playing a Sample Continuously (Hold)

  1. While holding a pad, press [HOLD] button. Sample continues playing after pad release. Press pad again to stop.

Switching Banks

Samples are assigned to four banks of 16 samples. Switching banks switches assigned samples.

  1. Press [BANK] button.
  2. Press a pad [1]-[4] to select a bank.

Moving/Copying Samples

Move or copy a sample to another pad.

Moving a Sample

  1. Hold pad of sample to move, press [CLIP BOARD] button.
  2. Hold [CLIP BOARD] button, press move-destination pad. Sample is moved. If destination has sample, "Overwrite OK?" appears. Press [ENTER] to overwrite, [EXIT] to cancel.

Copying a Sample

  1. Hold pad of sample to copy and [SHIFT] button, then press [CLIP BOARD] button.
  2. Hold [CLIP BOARD] button, press copy-destination pad. Sample is copied. If destination has sample, "Overwrite OK?" appears. Press [ENTER] to overwrite, [EXIT] to cancel.

Assigning Convenient Functions to the Pads (PAD MODE)

Assign various functions to 16 pads to select scenes or play samples.

  1. Press [PAD MODE] button.
  2. Press a pad [1]-[16] button to select a function. Setting screen appears.

Memo: Refer to "Reference Manual" for function details.

Sampling

Create samples from keyboard performance, MIC/LINE INPUT jacks (audio device, microphone), or USB COMPUTER port audio input.

  1. Connect device to MIC/LINE INPUT jacks if necessary. (For stereo, connect left to L/MONO, right to R. For mic, connect dynamic mic to MIC jack).
  2. Press [SAMPLING] button to light it. SAMPLING MENU appears.
  3. Touch desired function in SAMPLING. SAMPLING STANDBY screen appears.
  4. Note that <SAMPLE PAD> button shows bank/number of sample pad for sampling.
  5. To change bank/number, touch <SAMPLE PAD>. Specify in SAMPLING DESTINATION (PAD) screen.

Memo: If destination pad has sample, "Overwrite OK?" appears. Press [ENTER] to overwrite, [EXIT] to cancel.

  1. Touch <Sampling Mode> to select mode:
    • KBD+INPUT: Keyboard performance + MIC/LINE INPUT + USB COMPUTER audio sampled.
    • KBD: Keyboard performance sampled.
    • INPUT: MIC/LINE INPUT + USB COMPUTER audio sampled. (AUDIO IN must be enabled in INPUT SETTING).
  2. Adjust sampling volume as high as possible without clipping.
  3. Make settings for sampling:
    • Format: MONO (single mic, stereo mixed) or STEREO (L and R as two waveforms).
    • AUTO TRIGGER LEVEL (0-15): If ON, sampling starts when signal exceeds setting.
    • AUTO TRIGGER OFF, ON: If ON, sampling starts when signal exceeds AUTO TRIGGER LEVEL. If OFF, sampling starts immediately when <START> is touched.
  4. Produce sound on device, touch <START> to begin sampling. "NOW SAMPLING!" appears. (If AUTO TRIGGER is OFF, sampling starts when <START> is touched).
  5. To stop sampling, touch <STOP>. Sample is saved to destination pad.

Memo: Sampled data saved in unit's sample memory. Audio data from computer can be loaded. Refer to "Reference Manual."

Deleting a Sample (Delete)

  1. Hold [SHIFT] button, press [PAD MODE] button. SAMPLE PAD screen appears.
  2. Press a pad to select sample to delete.
  3. Touch <SAMPLE UTILITY>.
  4. Touch <DELETE>. Confirmation message appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  5. Touch <OK>. Sample is deleted.

Setting the Input Volume (Input Setting)

Specify input volume for MIC/LINE INPUT jacks.

  1. In SAMPLING STANDBY screen (p. 24), touch <INPUT SETTING>.
  2. Move cursor to desired parameter and edit value.

Sequencer

How the Sequencer Is Structured

Records and plays back using 16 tracks corresponding to zones. Each track has up to eight patterns, with variations during playback. Patterns can be up to 32 measures long and loop.

Pattern

A box with a recorded phrase is colored. Long-touching a recorded pattern box highlights it for play-standby mode. Only one pattern box per track can be in play-standby.

Group

Combination of patterns for each track. Create groups like "Intro," "Verse," "Fill."

Song

Arranges created groups in order. Specify looping for individual groups and entire song.

Memo: Patterns, groups, and songs are saved for each scene.

Playing the Sequencer

Playing Pattern

  1. Select a scene.
  2. Press [PATTERN] button. PATTERN screen appears.
  3. Press [PLAY] button. Each track's pattern in play-standby mode plays. Touching a non-playing pattern box plays it. Touching a colored pattern box switches patterns.
  4. Press [■STOP] button to stop all pattern playback. Touching a playing pattern box stops only that pattern. Pattern stop/start behavior depends on Change Timing parameter settings.

Playing Group

  1. Select a scene.
  2. Press [GROUP] button. GROUP screen appears. Selected group indicated by cursor. Pattern length for each track shown. Knob [E5] specifies group measures.
  3. Press [PLAY] button. Current group plays.
  4. Press [■STOP] button to stop playback.
  5. To select different group, touch group name or use [E2] knob.

Playing Song

  1. Select a scene.
  2. Press [SONG] button. SONG screen appears. Group boxes show playback order.
  3. Press [PLAY] button. Song plays, groups play in order. Currently playing group indicated by green box.

Recording a Pattern

Three ways to record: Realtime recording, Step recording, TR-REC.

Before recording, delete existing pattern:

  1. Select a scene.
  2. Press [PATTERN] button.
  3. Touch <PTN UTILITY>.
  4. Touch <DELETE>.
  5. Touch <DELETE ALL>. Confirmation appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  6. To execute, touch <OK>. All patterns deleted.

Note: Unsaved data is lost if scene is switched or power turned off.

Note: Deleted patterns cannot be recovered.

Realtime Recording (Realtime REC)

  1. Press [REC] button. REC STANDBY screen appears.
  2. Make settings for recording:
    • Count In: Adds count-in before recording.
    • Time Signature: Specifies time signature (when all patterns empty).
    • Input Quantize: Specifies quantization during recording.
    • RHY SYNC: If ON, selected rhythm pattern plays and records. If OFF, not recorded.
    • LOOP REC SW: ON: Continues recording after specified Length. OFF: Transitions to playback after specified Length.
    • REC EVENT: Selects performance data to record.
    • CLICK: Turns metronome on/off.
    • Tempo: Specifies tempo.
    • Length: Specifies pattern length.
    • NEW/MIX: New recording or overdub-record.
  3. Press [PLAY] button to start recording. (Also touch <START>).
  4. Play keyboard. Knob and controller operations also recorded.
  5. Press [■STOP] button to stop recording. Repeat steps to record variations or other tracks.

Step Recording (Step REC)

  1. Press [REC] button. REC STANDBY screen appears.
  2. In <TRACK/PATTERN>, note track to record. (Touching <TRACK/PATTERN> goes to PATTERN screen to select track/pattern. Zone played by track moves in tandem. Press [REC] again after selecting).
  3. Touch <STEP REC>. STEP RECORDING screen appears.
  4. Specify note settings:
    • Note Type: Rhythmic value of notes.
    • Gate Time: Specifies gate time.
    • Velocity: Specifies velocity.
  5. Play a key once. Note recorded, step position advances.
  6. Record chord by playing multiple notes.
  7. Repeat step 6 to record each step.
  8. Press [EXIT] button to end recording.

Memo: To enter rest, touch <REST>. To delete data, touch <STEP BACK>. To enter tie, touch <TIE>. To cancel tie, touch <UNTIE>. Use knob [E6] for measure position. Keyboard scroll bar moves display range up/down. Piano roll scroll bar moves display area through measures.

Setting the Timing at Which Sounds Play for Each Step (TR-REC)

TR-REC uses TONE CATEGORY buttons [1]-[16] to specify timing for each instrument. Available anytime phrase is playing or stopped. Use while listening to a created rhythm.

  1. Press [REC] button. REC STANDBY screen appears.
  2. In <TRACK/PATTERN>, note track to record. (Touching <TRACK/PATTERN> goes to PATTERN screen to select track/pattern. Press [REC] again after selecting).
  3. Touch <TR-REC>. TR-REC screen appears. [TR-REC] button lights, tone category buttons [1]-[16] become TR-REC step buttons.

Memo: Also select TR-REC by pressing [TR-REC] button instead of [REC].

  1. Make TR-REC settings:
    • Scale: Length of one step.
    • Gate: Gate time.
    • Velocity: Velocity.
  2. Use keyboard to specify instrument (drum kit only). Instrument changes with pitch. For non-drum kits, use keyboard to specify pitch.
  3. Press tone category buttons [1]-[16] to illuminate steps for note playback. Notes entered at corresponding step locations. To delete, press lit button. Also press [PLAY] to enter notes while pattern plays.
  4. Press lit [TR-REC] button to stop recording.

Memo: Cannot select TR-REC during realtime/step recording. Hold [SHIFT] and press tone category button [1]-[4] to change measure/beat location (depending on scale, use [1]-[8]). Scroll keyboard (instrument) area to move display up/down. Use piano-roll type scroll bar to move display area through measures.

About the Edit Screen

Piano Roll Screen (Piano Roll Edit)

Shows pitches, lengths, and timings of sounds on a keyboard display. Refer to "Reference Manual."

Microscope

Edits single points of performance data recorded in a pattern. Refer to "Reference Manual."

Creating a Group

  1. Press [PATTERN] button. PATTERN screen appears.
  2. Select patterns for each track to specify combination.
  3. Touch <GROUPING>. GROUP LIST appears.
  4. Move cursor to number to specify.
  5. Touch <SET>. Confirmation appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  6. To execute, touch <OK>. Current pattern combination registered as group.
  7. Repeat steps 2-6 to create more groups. Touch <RENAME> to name group.

Creating a Song

  1. Press [GROUP] button. GROUP screen appears.
  2. Touch <MAKE SONG>. MAKE SONG screen appears.
  3. In GROUP LIST, touch <ADD> for group to play first. Group added to SONG field, input position advances.

Memo: <ADD/REPLACE> replaces group at input position. Max 32 groups. <BACK DEL> deletes group, returns input position.

  1. Repeat step 3 to create song.

Note: Unsaved data is lost if scene is switched or power turned off.

Control

Performing Live with a Plug-in Synthesizer

Use FANTOM to play plug-in synthesizers installed on computer. Performance data for external zones (USB MIDI) and audio from computer (USB audio) are used.

Memo: Install USB driver from Roland website (roland.com/support).

USB Driver Settings

Specify USB driver for computer connection.

  1. Press [MENU] button.
  2. Touch <SYSTEM>.
  3. Touch <GENERAL> tab.
  4. Set "USB Driver" parameter to "VENDOR" (for Roland driver) or "GENERIC" (standard USB driver, MIDI only).
  5. Press [WRITE] button to save SYSTEM settings.
  6. Turn unit power off, then on again.

Controlling an External MIDI Device (EXT MIDI OUT)

Knob operations and keyboard performance transmit as MIDI messages from MIDI OUT connector and USB MIDI OUT. Set specific zone to "EXT" to control external MIDI device.

  1. Make ZONE SELECT button dark, then press ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] buttons for zone to output via MIDI. (For zones 9-16, use [ZONE 9-16] button then ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8]).
  2. Press ZONE INT/EXT [1]-[8] button of selected zone to light green. (If not green, hold [SHIFT] and press button to light green (EXT setting)). If lit green, MIDI messages output. If multiple ZONE INT/EXT buttons lit, settings with ZONE SELECT button determine MIDI output to external sound module (p. 17).

Memo: Access expanded settings by setting ZONE INT/EXT Control to "Advanced." See "Setting the ZONE INT/EXT Button (Zone Int/Ext Control)" (p. 33) and "Reference Manual."

Button status and zone behavior:

Unlit (COMMON)
Current zone: BASIC (internal and external sound), ADVANCED (internal and external sound only when ZONE INT/EXT buttons for all zones are off). Not current zone: Neither internal nor external sound. Internal sequencer or external MIDI data can play internal sound engine.
Lit red (INT)
Current zone: BASIC (external sound), ADVANCED (internal sound). Not current zone: Only if another current zone's ZONE INT/EXT button is on, internal sound engine produces sound.
Lit green (EXT)
Current zone: BASIC (external sound), ADVANCED (external sound). Not current zone: Only if another current zone's ZONE INT/EXT button is on, external sound module produces sound.
Lit yellow (BOTH) ADVANCED only
Internal and external sound engines both produce sound.
Lit orange (MUTE)
Sound engine muted. Internal sound engine does not produce sound. If previous state was lit green, external sound module produces sound.
  1. As desired, press [PAN/LEVEL], [CTRL], or [ASSIGN] button.
  2. When operating control knobs [1]-[8] and sliders [1]-[8], MIDI messages output according to buttons pressed in step 3.

Memo: Detailed settings in ZONE EDIT (p. 20). Save settings as scene settings (p. 22).

Using USB Audio

Inputting USB Audio

Adjust audio input level from computer connected via USB.

  1. Press [MENU] button.
  2. Touch <SYSTEM>.
  3. Touch <USB> tab. USB AUDIO menu appears.
  4. Use cursor to select "USB Audio Input Switch," use [VALUE] dial to turn "ON." Audio input turns on.
  5. Use cursor to select "USB Audio Input Volume," use [VALUE] dial to adjust input level.

Outputting USB Audio

Adjust audio output level to output USB audio to computer or device connected via USB.

  1. Press [MENU] button.
  2. Touch <SYSTEM>.
  3. Touch <USB> tab. USB AUDIO menu appears.
  4. Use cursor to select "USB Audio Output Switch," use [VALUE] dial to turn "ON." Audio output turns on.
  5. Use cursor to select "USB Audio Output Volume," use [VALUE] dial to adjust output level.

Setting the ZONE INT/EXT Button (Zone Int/Ext Control)

How ZONE INT/EXT button works.

  1. Press [MENU] button.
  2. Touch <SYSTEM>.
  3. Select Zone Int/Ext Control parameter and edit setting:
    • BASIC: Each ZONE INT/EXT button works as before.
    • ADVANCED: New states available for each ZONE INT/EXT button: unlit, red (INT), green (EXT), orange (MUTE), yellow (BOTH). For yellow (BOTH), both internal and external sound engines play.

Backing up User Data (Backup/Restore)

Save all settings to USB flash drive (backup) or write back to internal memory (restore).

Saving Data to USB Flash Drive (BACKUP)

Note: Backing up with same file name overwrites existing data. Assign new name for new backup.

  1. Press [MENU] button. MENU screen appears.
  2. Touch <UTILITY>. UTILITY screen appears.
  3. Touch <BACKUP>.
  4. To rename backup file, touch <RENAME> and assign name (p. 14). Touch <OK>.
  5. Touch <OK>. Confirmation appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  6. To execute, touch <OK>.

Note: Do not turn off or pull out external media during loading/saving.

Restoring Saved Data from USB Flash Drive (RESTORE)

Note: All current settings lost. Backup current settings if needed.

  1. In UTILITY screen, touch <RESTORE>.
  2. Touch file to restore, then touch <RESTORE>. Confirmation appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  3. To execute, touch <OK>.

Note: Do not turn off or pull out external media during loading/saving.

  1. Turn power off, then on again (p. 12).

Returning to the Factory Settings (Factory Reset)

Restore unit settings to factory-set condition.

Note: All data lost. Backup data if needed.

  1. In MENU screen, touch <UTILITY>.
  2. Touch <FACTORY RESET>. Confirmation appears. To cancel, touch <CANCEL>.
  3. To execute, touch <OK>.

Note: Do not turn off power during factory reset.
