Futaba GYA 553 Software Update Functions
This document outlines the software update procedure for the Futaba GYA 553 6-Axis Flight Control system and details its advanced functions.
GYA553 Software Updating Procedure
GYRO UPDATE (Update mode of GYA553)
This menu is used to adjust the update mode of the GYA553. The mode selected will be determined by the model of the CIU selected and personal preference. For example, when using the CIU-3, the user may select either the high speed or the slow speed modes. If using the CIU-2, only the slow speed mode is available.
Required optional products:
- CIU-2 or CIU-3
- DSC cable for update
- Receiver battery
(1) Download GYA553 update file
Download the GYA553 update file from the Futaba website or your local distributor's website.
Connection diagram
A PC that can connect to the Internet and has CIU-2 or CIU-3 driver software installed is required. The GYA553 should have an open/available slot.
Connection setup:
- Connect the GYA553, GPB-1, CIU-2 or CIU-3 to the PC.
- Refer to the connection diagram showing the PC connected to the CIU-2 or CIU-3 via USB, and the CIU-2 or CIU-3 connected to the GYA553's S.BUS2 port. The P.BOX port of the GYA553 is also shown, along with a battery and switch connected to the P.BOX port.
PC Side Update Process
Start an executable file on the PC. Use Updater(Lowspeed).exe
for CIU-2 or Updater(Highspeed).exe
for CIU-3.
- Double-click the executable file.
- In the update window, click WRITE.
- Confirm the update by clicking OK when prompted.
(3) Selection of CIU (Speed)
Before turning on the power of GYA553, select the writing speed suitable for CIU-2 or CIU-3.
Selection Method:
- CIU-2: Turn on the power while pressing the MODE SW of GYA553. The Mode LED lights Red, then about 4 seconds later, Red and Blue light simultaneously. When the Data LED turns Red, release the MODE SW.
- CIU-3: Turn on the power while pressing the MODE SW of GYA553. The Mode LED lights Red, then Red and Blue light simultaneously after about 4 seconds. Press and hold MODE SW for another 4 seconds when the Data LED turns Red, and release MODE SW when the Data LED turns Green.

(4) Perform update
Click on the update file downloaded to the PC to update the GYA553.
CAUTION: Do not turn off the power or remove the battery while updating, as the GYA553 may be damaged.
Update Status and Troubleshooting

When the update is completed successfully, the Mode LED will turn blue.

Error Handling
- Error: A CIU-2/3 is not connected. Click OK.
- Error: No product is connected. Click OK.
- Error: This connected product does not match the update file. Click OK.
If an error occurs, it may be necessary to restart the process. Please try the update again. If the issue persists, re-download the update file.
Update failed (CIU-2):
Mode LED lights Red, Data LED lights Red.
Update failed (CIU-3):
Mode LED lights Red, Data LED lights Green.

If the cable disconnects or a contact failure occurs during the update, the update stops halfway. In that case, please try updating again from the beginning.
Functions Ver 3.x
Required models for Ver 3.x settings:
- T32MZ: Ver 3.7 or later
- T16IZ SUPER: Ver 1.2 or later
- T16IZ: Ver 3.4 or later
- GPB-1: Ver 4.2 or later
1. SB/R2 port output selection
To support more servos and DLPH-1, S.BUS-STD has been added to the S.BUS output selection, in addition to S.BUS-HS (Same as previous S.BUS).
Parameter Settings:
- 1. Mount direction: Allows setting the orientation of the GYA553 (Face up, Face left, Face down, Face right). The default is Face up (Blue LED). Changes are indicated by Yellow or Red LEDs.
- 2. Servo type: Options include DG:285 Hz [Default] (Green LED) and AN:70Hz (Red LED).
- 3. Wing type: Options include Normal [Default] (Blue LED), Elevon (Green LED), and V-tail (Violet LED).
- 4. SB/R2 port: Options include S.BUS-HS [Default] (Red LED), Rudder 2 (Green LED), CH3 (THR) (Blue LED), and S.BUS-STD (Violet LED).
- 5. Reset: Allows resetting the unit. Default is Waiting (Green LED). Initialization is indicated by Fast flashing Blue LED. Resetting is performed by short pushing the DATA SW.
S.BUS(HS): Connect SV servo.
S.BUS(STD): If S3175HV, DLPH-1, etc., do not work with S.BUS(HS), use S.BUS(STD).
2. Added gyro control function for 3rd aileron (AIL3) and 4th aileron (AIL4)
When "S.BUS(HS)" or "S.BUS(STD)" is selected for the SB/R2 port output, gyro-controlled signals are output to the 3rd AIL (AIL3) and 4th (AIL4).
- Select "S.BUS(HS)" or "S.BUS(STD)" for the SB/R2 port output. The S.BUS basic setting screen will display AIL3 and AIL4 items.
- CH setting items for AIL3 and AIL4 are displayed on the final screen of the S.BUS basic setting screen. By setting the operation CH of AIL3 and AIL4, the gyro-controlled signal is output to the corresponding CH of the S.BUS output.
- If the AIL3 and AIL4 CH settings are INH (Inhibit), the gyro control is not performed, and the data sent from the transmitter is output as is.
- If the SB/R2 port output is set to "S.BUS(HS)" or "S.BUS(STD)", the setting menu will display AIL3 and AIL4 setting items.
Note: AIL3 and AIL4 settings cannot be set with the button settings on the GYA553 main unit.
Servo Limit Settings
The Servo Limit settings for AIL, ELE, RUD, AIL2, ELE2, RUD2, AIL3, and AIL4 are displayed, with default values set to 100%.
Functions Ver 2.x
- The Air-Brake function can be used in NORMAL mode.
- CH3 (THR) can be output to the RUD2 / S.BUS2 port.
- The "Holding power" of AVCS mode has been expanded to 5 types, and it is possible to switch with CH data.

- T32MZ: Ver 3.6 or later
- T16IZ: Ver 3.3 or later
