Introduction
The Beurer BF 70 digital body analysis scale is designed for measuring body weight and providing an analysis of your personal fitness data. It is intended for household use only.
In addition to measuring body weight, the scale offers the following functions for up to eight persons:
- Body weight in lb/kg/st
- Body fat percentage (BF) in %
- Body water percentage in %
- Muscle percentage in %
- Bone mass in lb/kg/st
- Basal metabolic rate (BMR) and active metabolic rate (AMR)
The scale also features:
- Unit switching (lb, kg, st)
- Automatic shut-off
- Low battery indicator
- Automatic user recognition
- Storage for the last 30 measurements per user
- Bluetooth® communication with the free ‘beurer HealthCoach’ app
System Requirements for ‘beurer HealthCoach’ app: Bluetooth® ≥ 4.0, iOS from version 8.0, Android™ from version 4.4.
The scale operates on the principle of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which uses a harmless electric current to quickly calculate body composition. By analyzing electrical resistance (impedance) alongside data like age, height, gender, and activity level, body fat percentage and other variables can be estimated. Muscle tissue and water are good conductors (low resistance), while bones and fat tissue have low conductivity (high resistance).
Calculated values are approximations. Consult a doctor for precise body composition analysis.
Tips for Accurate Measurements:
- Weigh yourself at the same time daily (morning), after using the restroom, on an empty stomach, with minimal clothing.
- For body fat percentage, use the scale barefoot. Feet may be slightly damp. Dry or rough skin can reduce conductivity.
- Stand straight and still.
- Wait a few hours after strenuous physical exertion.
- Wait about 15 minutes after waking for body water content to normalize.
- Focus on long-term trends; short-term weight fluctuations are often due to water content changes.
Limitations: Deviating results may occur for children under 10, athletes/bodybuilders, pregnant women, individuals with fever, dialysis patients, edema symptoms, osteoporosis, those taking cardiovascular medication, or those with significant anatomical leg deviations.

If the user is not recognized, only weight is shown, and '---' appears in the User ID area.
Weight Measurement Only (with Shoes/Socks)
- Step on the scale wearing shoes or socks.
- Stand still, weight distributed evenly on both feet.
- Scale displays weight. If a user is recognized, their initials and corresponding BMI, BMR, AMR are shown.
- Scale shuts off automatically after inactivity.

Body Water Content
Normal ranges for body water percentage:
Men

Persons with high body fat may have lower body water percentages. Athletes may have higher percentages due to low fat and high muscle mass. This scale's calculation is not for medical conclusions. Consult a doctor if necessary. Higher body water content is generally desirable.

60-69 | <28% | 28-33% | >33% |
70-100 | <27% | 27-32% | >32% |
Bone Mass
Bone mass follows natural growth, shrinkage, and aging processes, peaking between ages 30-40 and decreasing thereafter. A healthy diet (calcium, Vitamin D) and regular exercise can help combat this. The scale calculates the weight of bone components (organic, inorganic, water), not calcium content. Bone mass is influenced by weight, height, age, and gender, but is difficult to influence directly. There are no recognized guidelines.
IMPORTANT: Do not confuse bone mass with bone density, which requires a medical examination.
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
BMR is the energy your body needs at rest to maintain basic functions, depending on weight, height, and age. It's calculated using the Harris-Benedict equation and represents the energy that must be supplied by food. Insufficient energy intake over time can affect health.
AMR (Active Metabolic Rate)
AMR is the energy consumed by an active body daily, increasing with physical activity level (1-5). To maintain weight, energy intake should match energy expenditure. Insufficient intake leads to fat loss; excess intake leads to fat storage and weight gain.
Interpreting the Results
Note: Focus on long-term trends. Short-term weight changes (days) are usually due to fluid loss.
Interpretation considers changes in total weight, fat, water, and muscle percentages over time. Rapid changes (days) are distinct from medium-term (weeks) and long-term (months) changes. Short-term changes are primarily water; medium/long-term changes may indicate fat/muscle changes.
- Short-term weight loss with stable/increased fat % means water loss.
- Medium-term weight gain with stable/decreased fat % may indicate muscle gain.
- Simultaneous weight and fat % decrease indicates successful fat loss.
- Support diets with physical activity to increase muscle percentage.
- Do not total fat, water, and muscle percentages, as muscle tissue contains water.
Other Functions
User Assignment
Up to eight users can be assigned for weight-only (with shoes) or analysis (barefoot) measurements. The scale assigns a new measurement to the user whose most recent saved measurement is closest (within 4 lb/2 kg and 2% body fat).
Unknown Measurements
Measurements not assigned to a known user are stored as unknown (up to 20). Use the app to assign them.
Saving Measurements
If the app is open and paired via Bluetooth®, measurements are sent to the app and not saved on the scale. If the app is closed, measurements are saved on the scale (up to 30 per user). Saved measurements transfer automatically when the app is opened within Bluetooth® range (syncs within 10 seconds). Data can also transfer when the scale is off.
Deleting Scale Data
To delete all measurements and old user data, turn on the scale and press and hold the reset button for three seconds; 'dEL' will appear on the LCD.
Care and Maintenance
Replacing Batteries
The scale has a low battery indicator. When batteries are low, 'Lo' appears on the LCD, and the scale shuts off. Replace with three new AAA-size alkaline batteries.
Cleaning
Clean the scale periodically with a damp cloth and, if necessary, a small amount of mild detergent.
Disposal
Dispose of the device according to local regulations. Contact local authorities for questions.
Troubleshooting Guide
If the scale displays an error during measurement:
Display | Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
'----' | Unknown measurement (outside user assignment limits or unique assignment not possible). | Assign unknown measurement in app or repeat user assignment. |
'----' across LCD | Fat percentage outside measurable range (less than 3% or greater than 65%). | Repeat barefoot measurement; moisten soles of feet slightly if needed. |
'Err' (capacity) | Maximum load capacity of 400 lb (181.4 kg) exceeded. | Do not exceed 400 lb (181.4 kg). |
'Err' or incorrect weight | Surface not flat or stable. | Place scale on a flat, stable surface. |
'Err' or incorrect weight | Not standing still. | Stand as still as possible. |
Incorrect weight | Scale zero setting is incorrect. | Wait for scale to auto-off. Activate scale, wait for '0.0 lb' to appear, and repeat measurement. |
No Bluetooth® symbol | Device out of range. | Minimum range is approx. 82 ft (25 m) in open field. Walls/ceilings reduce range. Other radio waves (WLAN routers, microwaves, induction hobs) can interfere; do not place scale near them. |
'FULL' | User memory space is full. | Open the app; data transfers automatically (may take up to 1 minute). |
'Lo' | Batteries are empty. | Replace batteries. |
