Introduction
The µCache AT-100 facilitates precision environmental measurements using Apogee's analog sensors. Measurements are transmitted wirelessly to a mobile device via Bluetooth®. The Apogee Connect mobile app interfaces with the µCache to collect, display, and export data.
The µCache features an M8 connector for connecting to an analog sensor. For a list of supported sensors, visit: Apogee Instruments MicroCache Bluetooth Memory Module.
The µCache app supports manual and automatic data logging, as well as live data measurements when connected to a mobile device. The app allows users to record, download, and export samples.
Data logging is configured via sampling and logging intervals. A Bluetooth® connection to the mobile app is required for setup and data collection, but the µCache stores measurements independently. It has a large memory capacity of approximately 400,000 entries, or about 9 months of data at a 1-minute logging interval.
The µCache is powered by a 2/3 AA battery. Battery life is influenced by daily connection time over Bluetooth® and the sampling interval.
The µCache housing includes a button and LED for managing Bluetooth® connectivity and providing status feedback.

Logging Instructions
Begin Logging
- Click the “Settings” ⚙️ icon.
- Scroll down and toggle on the “Logging Enabled” button.
- Set the Logging interval (determines data point frequency).
- Set the Sampling interval (determines how many readings are averaged for each data point). Note: Shorter intervals reduce battery life. Faster sampling has the most effect. For example, 15-minute logging with 5-minute sampling is adequate for most greenhouse applications and provides about a year of battery life. One-second sampling can shorten battery life to about one week.
- Click the green Save button.
- Scroll down and hit Match Current Time.
Collect Logs
- If disconnected, reconnect the µCache by pressing the green button for 3 seconds.
- Click the “Collect Logs” icon.
- Select “Append to existing” to add to a dataset on your phone, or “Create New” to start a new dataset.
- Confirm Start and End dates match the desired data range.
- Click “Collect Logs”.
- Once collected, graphs will populate on the dashboard. Data sets can also be exported via email.
Live Data Averaging
Used in live meter mode to smooth out fluctuations in the sensor signal. Particularly useful for sensors like Quantum Light Pollution sensors (SQ-640 series) or others detecting subtle trends.
Dark Threshold
The amount of light accepted before a photoperiod is considered disrupted. Useful for measuring photoperiods, especially with light-sensitive plants.
Included in the µCache packages: All AT-100 units include a µCache unit, a battery, and a complimentary sensor base.

Cable Connectors
The ruggedized M8 connectors are rated IP68, constructed from corrosion-resistant marine-grade stainless-steel, and designed for extended use in harsh environmental conditions.
Instructions
- Pins and Wiring Colors: Apogee connectors have six pins, though not all are used for every sensor. Unused wire colors inside the cable are removed at the logger end to simplify connection. Contact Apogee for replacement cables to ensure proper pigtail configuration.
- Alignment: Arrows on the connector jacket and an aligning notch ensure proper orientation when reconnecting the sensor. A reference notch inside the connector also aids alignment before tightening.
- Disconnection for extended periods: When disconnecting a sensor for an extended time, protect the µCache's connector half from water and dirt using electrical tape or another method.
- For Calibration: When sending sensors for calibration, send only the short end of the cable and half the connector.
- Tightening: Connectors are designed to be firmly finger-tightened only. Over-compression can occur if a wrench is used due to the O-ring. Pay attention to thread alignment to avoid cross-threading. When fully tightened, 1-2 threads may still be visible.
- WARNING: Do not tighten the connector by twisting the black cable or sensor head; only twist the metal connector.
Deployment and Installation
Apogee µCache Bluetooth® Memory Modules (model AT-100) are designed to work with Apogee analog sensors and the Apogee Connect mobile app for spot-check measurements and logging. For accurate incoming radiation measurements, the sensor must be level. Each sensor model comes with a different mounting option for achieving a horizontal plane.
The AL-100 leveling plate is recommended for most sensors. For mounting to a cross arm, the AM-110 mounting bracket is recommended for use with the AL-100.
The AM-320 Saltwater Submersible Sensor Wand accessory features a mounting fixture at the end of a 40-inch segmented fiberglass wand, making it suitable for saltwater use. The wand allows sensor placement in hard-to-reach areas like aquariums. While sensors are fully-potted and submersible, the µCache itself should not be submerged and must be kept in a safe, dry place.
Please Note: Do not let the µCache dangle.
Maintenance and Recalibration
µCache Maintenance
- Ensure the latest version of software is installed for the mobile app and the latest firmware is installed on the µCache. Check the app store for your OS to confirm the latest Apogee Connect version. Firmware version can be checked in the app's Settings page.
- Keep the µCache unit clean and free of debris.
- If the housing is opened, ensure the gasket and seating are clean and the interior remains dry. Tighten screws until firm to create a weather-tight seal.
Steps to Replace the µCache Battery
- Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the screws from the battery cover.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Remove the used battery.
- Place a fresh battery, aligning the positive terminal with the + label on the board.
- Ensure the gasket and seating are clean.
- Replace the battery cover.
- Use a Philips screwdriver to replace the screws.
Sensor Maintenance and Recalibration
Moisture or debris on the diffuser is a common cause of low readings. The sensor's domed diffuser and housing offer improved self-cleaning from rainfall, but dust or salt deposits can accumulate and block the optical path. Dust or organic deposits are best removed with water or window cleaner and a soft cloth or cotton swab. Salt deposits should be dissolved with vinegar and removed with a soft cloth or cotton swab. Never use an abrasive material or cleaner on the diffuser.
Apogee sensors are stable, but nominal accuracy drift is normal for all research-grade sensors. For maximum accuracy, recalibration is recommended every two years, though longer intervals may be acceptable based on specific tolerances.
Refer to individual sensor product manuals for more sensor-specific maintenance and recalibration information.
Troubleshooting and Customer Support
Cable Length
When connected to a measurement device with high input impedance, sensor output signals are not affected by shortening or splicing cables. Tests show negligible calibration effect even with up to 100 m of cable. Apogee sensors use shielded, twisted-pair cable to minimize electromagnetic interference. For best measurements, the shield wire must be connected to an earth ground, especially in electromagnetically noisy environments or with long lead lengths.
Modifying Cable Length
See the Apogee webpage for details on extending sensor cable length: How to Make a Weatherproof Cable Splice.
