Installation
Before You Begin
Proper placement of the router is crucial for optimal performance. Avoid placing it in enclosed areas like closets, cabinets, attics, or garages. Ensure the router is configured with the computer that was last connected directly to your internet connection before adding other devices. If your ISP provides a modem/router combo, set it to bridge or router mode as needed. When connecting to a DSL modem, have your DSL service information ready. For extensive networking setups, labeling cables or taking pictures of the existing setup is recommended. If using DSL with PPPoE, disable or uninstall any PPPoE software from your computer.
Wireless Installation Considerations
To maximize wireless range, follow these guidelines:
- Minimize the number of walls and ceilings between the router and network devices.
- Be aware of the direct line of sight; angled walls can significantly reduce signal strength.
- Building materials like metal, brick, and concrete can degrade the wireless signal. Opt for drywall or open doorways when possible.
- Keep the router at least 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) away from electrical devices that generate RF noise.
- Avoid placing 2.4 GHz cordless phones or similar wireless devices near the router, as they can interfere with the wireless connection.
